VIII 1 The waters asswaye 4 The ark resteth on Ararat 7 The Raven and the Dove 15 Noah being commanded 18 goeth forth of the ark 20 He builâ—eth an altar and offereth sacrifice 21 which God accepteth and promiseth to curse the earth no more ANd God remembred Noah and every living thing and all the cattel that was with him in the ark and God made a wind to pass over the earth and the waters asswaged 2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped and the rain from heaven was restrained 3 And the waters returned from off the earth †Heb. in going and returning continually and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated 4 ¶ And the ark rested in the seventh moneth on the seventeenth day of the moneth upon the mountains of Ararat 5 And the waters †Heb. were in going and decreasing decreased continually until the tenth moneth in the tenth moneth on the first day of the moneth were the tops of the mountains seen 6 ¶ And it came to pass at the end of fourty days that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made 7 And he sent forth a raven which went forth †Heb. in going forth and returning to and fro until the waters were dried up from off the earth 8 Also he sent forth a dove from him to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground 9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot and she returned unto him into the ark for the waters were on the face of the whole earth Then he put forth his hand and took her and †Heb. caused her to come pulled her in unto him into the ark 10 And he stayed yet other seven days and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark 11 And the dove came in to him in the evening and â—o in her mouth was as olive leaf pluckt off So Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth 12 And he stayed yet other seven days and sent forth the dove which returned not again unto him any more 13 ¶ And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year in the firâ—t moneth the first day of the moneth the waters were dried up from off the earth and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked and behold the face of the ground was dry 14 And in the second moneth on the seven and twentieth day of the moneth was the earth dried 15 ¶ And God spake unto Noah saying 16 Go forth of the ark thou and thy wife and thy sons and thy sons wives with thee 17 Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee of all flesh both of fowl and of cattel and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth that they may breed abundantly in the earth and be fruitful and multiply upon the earth 18 And Noah went forth and his sons and his wife and his sons wives with him 19 Every beast every creeping thing and every fowl and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth after their †Heb. families kinds went forth out of the ark 20 ¶ And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD and took of every clean beast of every clean fowl offered burnt-offerings on the altar 21 And the LORD smelled †Heb. a savour of rest a sweet savour and the LORD said in his heart I will not again curse the ground any more for mans sake for the * Chap. 6.5 Matth. 15.19 imagination of mans heart is evil from his youth neither will I again smite any more every thing living as I have done 22 †Heb. as yet all the days of the earth While the earth remaineth feed-time and harvest and cold and heat and summer and winter and day and night shall not cease CHAP. IX 1 God blesseth Noah 4 Bloud and murder are forbidden 8 Gods covenant 13 siâ—nified by the rainbowe 18 Noah replenisheth the world 20 planteth a vineyard 21 is drunken and mocked of his son 25 curseth Canaan 26 blesseth Shem 27 prayeth for Japheth 2â—
neither did he hearken unto them as the LORD had said 23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house neither did he set his heart to this also 24 And all the Egyptians digged round about the river for water to drink for they could not drink of the water of the river 25 And seven dayes were fulfilled after that the LORD had smitten the river CHAP. VIII 1 Frogs are sent 8 Pharaoh sueth to Moses 12 and Moses by prayer removeth them away 16 The dust is turned into lice which the magicians could not do 20 The swarms of flies 25 Pharaoh inclineth to let the people go 32 but yet is hardened ANd the LORD spake unto Moses Go unto Pharaoh and say unto him Thus saith the LORD Let my people go that they may serve me 2 And if thou refuse to let them go behold I will smite all thy borders with frogs 3 And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly which shall go up and come into thine house and into thy bed-chamber and upon thy bed and into the house of thy servants and upon thy people and into thine ovens and into thy ‖ Or dough kneading-troughâ— 4 And the frogs shall come up both on thee and upon thy people and upon all thy servants 5 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses Say unto Aaron Stretch forth thine haâ—d with thy rod over the streams over the rivers and over the ponds and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt 6 And Aaâ—on stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt 7 * Wiâ—â— 17.7 And the Magicians did so with their inchantments and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt 8 ¶ Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said Intreat the LORD that he may take away the frogs from me and from my people and I will let the people go that they may do sacrifice unto the LORD 9 And Moses said unto Pharaoh ‖ Or have this bonour over me c. Glory over me ‖ Or arainst when when shall I intreat for thee and for thy servants and for thy people †Heb. to cut off to destroy the frogs from thee and thy houses that they may remain in the river onely 10 And he said ‖ Or against to morrow To morrow And he said Be it according to thy word that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the LORD our God 11 And the frogs shall depart from thee and from thy houses and from thy servants and from thy people they shall remain in the river onely 12 And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh and Moses cried unto the LORD because of the frogs which he had brought against Pharaoh 13 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses and the frogs died out of the houses out of the villages and out of the fields 14 And they gathered them together upon heaps and the land stank 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite he hardned his heart and hearkned not unto them as the LORD had said 16 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Say unto Aaron Stretch out thy rod and smite the dust of the land that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt 17 And they did so for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod and smote the dust of the earth and it became lice in man and in beaâ—t all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt 18 And the magicians did so with their inchantmentâ— to bring forth lice but they could not so there were lice upon man and upon beast 19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh This is the finger of God and Pharaohâ— heart was hardned and he hearkned not unto them as the LORD had said 20 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh â—o he cometh forth to the water and say unto him Thus saith the LORD Let my people go that they may serve me 21 Else if thou wilt not let my people go behold I will send ‖ Or a mixture of noysome câ—asts c. swarms of flies upon thee and upon thy servants and upon thy people and into thy houses and the houses of the Egyptians shall be â—ull of swarms of flies and also the ground whereon they are 22 And I will sever in that day the laâ—d of Goshen in which my people dwell that no swarms of flies shall be there to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midâ—t of the earth 23 And I will put †Heb. a redemption a division between my people and thy people ‖ Or by to morrow to morrow shall this signe be 24 And the LORD did soâ—and * Wisd 16. â— there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh and into his servants houses and into all the land of Egypt the land was ‖ Or destroyed corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies 25 ¶ And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron and said Go ye sacriâ—ice to your God in the land 26 And Moses said It is not meet so to do for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God Lo shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes and will they not stone us 27 We will go three dayes journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as * Ch. 3. â—8 he shall command us 28 And Pharaoh said I will let you go that ye may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness onely you shall not go very far away intreat for me 29 And Moses said Behold I go out from thee and I will intreat the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh from hiâ— servants and from his people to morrow but let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD 30 And Moses went out from Pharaoh and intreated the LORD 31 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses and he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh from his servants and from his people there remained not one 32 And Pharaoh hardned his heart at this time also neither would he let the people go CHAP. IX 1 The murrain of beasts 8 The plague of boyls and blains 12 The message about the hail 22 The plague of hail 27 Pharaoh sueth to Moses 35 but yet is hardned THen the LORD said unto Moses Go in unto Pharaoh and tell him Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews Let my people go that they may serve me 2 For if thou refuse to let them go and wilt hold them still 3 Behold the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattel which is in the field upon the horses upon the asses upon the camels upon the oxen and upon the sheep there shall be
whole house of Israel bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled 7 And ye shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of the congregation lest you die for the anointing oyl of the LORD is upon you And they did according to the word of Moses 8 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Aaron saying 9 Do not drink wine nor strong drink thou nor thy sons with thee when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation lest ye die It shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations 10 And that ye may put difference between hoâ—y and unholy and between unclean and clean 11 And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses 12 ¶ And Moses spake unto Aaron and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamâ—r his sons that were left Take the meat-offering that remaineth of the offerings of the LORD made by fire and eat it without leaven beside the altar for it is most holy 13 And ye shall eat it in the holy place because it is thy due and thy sonâ— due of the sacrifices of the LORD made by fire for so I am commandâ—d 14 And * Exod. â—9 24 the wave-breast and heave-shoulder shall ye eat in a clean place thou and thy sons and thy daughters with thee for they be thy due and thy sons due which are given out of the sacrifices of peace-offerings of the children of Israel 15 The heave-shoulder and the wave-breast shall they bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat to wave it for a wave-offering before the LORD and it shall be thine and thy sons with thee by a statute for ever as the LORD hath commanded 16 ¶ And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin-offering and behold it was burnt and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar the sons of Aaron which were left alive saying 17 Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin-offering in the holy place seeing it is most holy and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation to make atonement for them before the LORD 18 Behold the bloud of it was not brought in within the holy place ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy place * Chap. 6.26 as I commanded 19 And Aaron said unto Moses Behold this day have they offered their sin-offering and their burnt-offering before the LORD and such things have befallen me and if I had eaten the sin-offering to day should it have been accepted in the sight of the LORD 20 And when Moses heard that he was content CHAP. XI 1 What beasts may 4 and what may not be eaten 9 What fishes 13 What fowls 29 The creeping things which are unclean ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron saying unto them 2 Speak unto the children of Israel saying * Deu. 14.4 Act. 10 1â— These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth 3 Whatsoever parteth the hoof and is cloven-footed and cheweth the cud among the beasts that shall ye eat 4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud or of them that divide the hoof as the camel because he cheweth the cud but divideth not the hoof he is unclean to you 5 And the coney because he cheweth the cud but divideth not the hoof he is unclean unto you 6 And the hare because he cheweth the cud but divideth not the hoof he is unclean unto you 7 And * 2 Maâ— 6.18 the swine though he divide the hoof and be cloven-footed yet he cheweth not the cud he is unclean to you 8 Of their flesh shall ye not eat and their carcase shall ye not touch they are unclean to you 9 ¶ These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters whatsoever hath fins scales in the waters in the seas in the rivers them shall ye eat 10 And all that have not fins nor scales in the seas and in the rivers of all that move in the waters and of any living thing which is in the waters they shall be an abomination unto you 11 They shall be even an abomination unto you ye shall not eat of their flesh but you shall have their carcases in abomination 12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters that shall be an abomination unto you 13 ¶ And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls they shall not be eaten they are an abomination the eagle and the ossifrage and the ospray 14 And the vulture and the kite after his kinde 15 Every raven after his kinde 16 And the owl and the night-hauk and the cuckow and the hauk after his kinde 17 And the little owl and the cormorant and the great owl 18 And the swan and the pelican and the gier-eagle 19 And the stork and the heron after her kinde and the lapwing and the bat 20 All fowls that creep going upon all four shall be an abomination unto you 21 Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four which have legs above their feet to leap withal upon the earth 22 Even these of them ye may eat the locust after his kinde and the bald locust after his kinde and the beetle after his kinde and the grashopper after his kinde 23 But all other flying creeping things which have four feet shall be an abomination unto you 24 And for these ye shall be unclean whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even 25 And whosoever beareth ought of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the even 26 The carcases of every beast which divideth the hoof and is not cloven-footed nor cheweth the cud are unclean unto you every one that toucheth them shall be unclean 27 And whatsoever goeth upon his paws among all manner of beasts that go on all four those are unclean unto you whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even 28 And he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the even they are unclean unto you 29 ¶ These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth the weasel and the mouse and the tortoise after his kinde 30 And the ferret and the chameleon and the lyzard and the snail and the mole 31 These are unclean to you among all that creep whosoever doth touch them when they be dead shall be unclean until the even 32 And upon whatsoever any of them when they are dead doth fall it shall be unclean whether it be any vessel of wood or raiment or skin or sack whatsoever vessel it be wherein any work is done it must be put into water and it shall be unclean until the even so it shall be cleansed 33 And every earthen vessel whereinto any of them falleth whatsoever is in it shall

those that were numbred of them were threescore and four thousand and four hundred 44 ¶ Of the children of Asher after their families of Jimna the family of the Jimnites of Jesui the family of the Jesuites of Beriah the family of the Beriites 45 Of the sons of Beriah of Heber the family of the Heberites of Malchiel the family of the Malchielites 46 And the name of the daughter of Asher was Sarah 47 These are the families of the sons of Asher according to those that were numbred of them who were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 48 Of the sons of Naphtali after their families of Jahzeel the family of the Jahzeelites of Guni the family of the Gunites 49 Of Jezer the family of the Jezerites of Shillem the family of the Shillemites 50 These are the families of Naphtali according to their families and they that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and four hundred 51 These were the numbred of the children of Israel six hundred thousand and a thousand seven hundred and thirty 52 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 53 Unto these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names 54 * Ch. 33.54 To many thou shalt †Heb. multiply his inheritance give the more inheritance and to few thou shalt †Heb. diminish his inheritance give the less inheritance to every one shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbred of him 55 Notwithstanding the land shall be * Ch. 33.54 Josh 11.23 and 14.2 divided by lot according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit 56 According to the lot shall the possession thereof be divided between manâ— and few 57 ¶ * Ex. 6.16 17 18 19. thou goest in to possess it is not as the land of Egypt from whence ye came out where thou sowedst thy seed and wateredst it with thy foot as a garden of herbs 11 But the land whither ye go to possess it is a land of hills and valleys and drinketh water of the rain of heaven 12 A land which the LORD thy God †Heb. â—â—â—â—eth careth for the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year 13 ¶ And it shall come to pass if you shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day to love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul 14 That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season the first rain and the latter rain that thou mayest gather in thy corn and thy wine and thine oyl 15 And I will †Heb. give send grass in thy fields for thy cattel that thou mayest eat and be full 16 Take heed to your selves that your heart be not deceived and ye turn aside and serve other gods and worship them 17 And then the LORDS wrath be kindled against you and he shut up the heaven that there be no rain and that the land yeeld not her fruit and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you 18 ¶ Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul and * Chap. 6.8 hinde them for a signe upon your hand that they may be as frontlets between your eyes 19 * Ch. 4.10 6.7 And ye shall teach them your children speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house and when thou walkest by the way when thou liest down and when thou risest up 20 And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thine house and upon thy gates 21 That your days may be multiplyed and the days of your children in the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers to give them as the days of heaven upon the earth 22 ¶ For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you to do them to love the LORD your God to walk in all his ways and to cleave unto him 23 Then will the LORD drive out all these nations from before you and ye shall possess greater nations and mightier then your selves 24 * Josh 1.3 Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours from the wilderness and Lebanon from the river the river Euphrates even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be 25 There shall no man be able to stand before you for the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon as he hath said unto you 26 ¶ Behold I set before you this day a blessing and a curse 27 †Chap. 28. â— A blessing if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you this day 28 And a * Chap. 28.15 curse if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day to go after other gods which ye have not known 29 And it shall come to pass when the LORD thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest to possess it that thou shalt put * Chap. 27.12 13 Josh 8.33 the blessing upon mount Gerizim and the curse upon mount Ebal 30 Are they not on the other side Jordan by the way where the sun goeth down in the land of the Canaanites which dwell in the champian over against Gilgâ—l beside the plains of Moreh 31 For ye shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God giveth you and ye shall possess it and dwell therein 32 And ye shall observe * Chap. â— 32 to do all the statutes and judgements which I set before you this day CHAP. XLVII 1 The nations are exhorted chearfully to entertain the kingdom of Christ ¶ To the chief musician A psalm ‖ Or of for the sons of Korah O Clap your hands all ye people shout unto God with the voice of triumph 2 For the LORD most High is terrible he is a great King over all the earth 3 He shall subdue the people under us and the nations under our feet 4 He shall choose our inheritance for us the excellency of Jacob whom he loved Selah 5 God is gone up with a shout the LORD with the sound of a trumpet 6 Sing praises to God sing praises sing praises unto our King sing praises 7 For God is the King of all the earth sing ye praises ‖ Or every one that hath understanding with understanding 8 God reigneth over the heathen God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness 9 ‖ Or the voluntary of the people are gathered unto the people of the God of Abraham The princes of the people are gathered together even the people of the God of Abraham for the shields of the earth belong unto God he is greatly exalted PSAL. XLVIII The ornaments and priviledges of the church ¶ A long and psalm ‖ Or of for the sons of Korah GReat is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our God in the mountain of his holiness 2 Beautiful for situation the joy of the whole earth is mount Zion on the sides of the north the city of the great king 3 God is known in her palaces for a refuge 4 For lo the kings were assembled they passed by together 5 They saw it and so they marvelled they were troubled and hasted away 6 Fear took hold upon them there and pain as of a woman in travail 7 Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind 8 As we have heard so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts in the city of our God God will establish it for ever Selah 9 We have thought of thy loving kindness O God in the midst of thy temple 10 According to thy name O God so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth thy right hand is full of righteousness 11 Let mount Zion rejoyce let the daughters of Judah be glad because of thy judgements 12 Walk about Zion and go round about her tell the towers thereof 13 †Heb. set your heart to her bulwarks Mark ye well her bulwarks ‖ Or raise up consider her palaces that ye may tell it to the generation following 14 For this God is our God for ever and ever he will be our guide even unto death PSAL. XLIX 1 An earnest perswasion to build the faith of resurrection not on worldly power but on God 16 Worldly prosperity is not to be admired ¶ To the chief musician A psalm ‖ Or of for the sons of Korah HEar this all ye people give ear all ye inhabitants of the world 2 Both low and high rich and poor together 3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding 4 * Ps â—8 2 Mat. 13.35 I will incline mine ear to a parable I will open my dark saying upon the harp 5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about 6 They that trust in their wealth and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches 7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother nor give to God a ransom for him 8 For the redemption of their soul is precious and it ceaseth for ever 9 That he should still live for ever end not see corruption 10 For he seeth that wise men die likewise the fool and the brutish person perish and leave their wealth to others 11 Their inward thought is that their houses shall continue for ever and their dwelling places †Heb. to generation and generation to all generations they call their lands after their own names 12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not he is like the beasts that perish 13 This their way is their folly yet their posterity †Heb. delight in their mouth approve their sayings Selah 14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave death shall seed on them and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning and their ‖ Or strength beauty shall consume ‖ Or the grave being an habitation to every one of them in the grave from their dwelling 15 But God will redeem my soul †Heb. from the hand of the grave from the power of ‖ Or hell the grave for he shall receive me Selah 16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich when the glory of his house is increased 17 * Job 27.19 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away his glory shall not descend after him 18 Though †Heb. in his life whiles he lived he blessed his soul and men will praise thee when thou doest well to thy self 19

LXIII 1 Davids thirst for God 4 His manner of Hessing God 9 His confidence of his enemies destruction and his own safety ¶ A psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah O God thou art my God early will I seek thee my soul thirsteth for thee my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and †Heb. weary thirsty land †Heb. without water where no water is 2 To see thy power and thy glory so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary 3 Because thy loving kindness is better then life my lips shall praise thee 4 Thus will I bless thee while I live I will lift up my hands in thy name 5 My soul shall be satisfied as with †Heb. fatness marrow and fatness and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips 6 When I remember thee upon my bed and meditate on thee in the night-watches 7 Because thou hast been my help therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoyce 8 My soul followeth hard after thee thy right hand upholdeth me 9 But those that seek my soul to destroy it shall go into the lower parts of the earth 10 †Heb. they shall make him run cut like water by the hands of the sword They shall fall by the sword they shall be a portion for foxes 11 But the king shall rejoyce in God every one that sweareth by him shall glory but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped PSAL. LXIV 1 David prayeth for deliverance complaining of his enemies 7 He promiseth himself to see such an evident destruction of his enemies as the righteous shall rejoyce at it ¶ To the chief musician A psalm of David HEar my voice O God in my prayer preserve my life from fear of the enemy 2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity 3 * Psal 11.2 Who whet their tongue like a sword and bend their bows to shoot their arrows even bitter words 4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect suddenly do they shoot at him and fear not 5 They encourage themselves in an evil ‖ Or speeth matter they commune †Heb to hide snares of laying snares privily they say Who shall see them 6 They search out iniquities ‖ Or we are consumed by that which they have throughly searched they accomplish †Heb. a searth searched a diligent search both the inward thought of every one of them and the heart is deep 7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow suddenly †Heb. their wound shall be shall they be wounded 8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves all that see them shall flee away 9 And all men shall fear and shall declare the work of God for they shall wisely consider of his doing 10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD and shall trust in him and all the upright in heart shall glory PSAL. LXV 1
as long as the sun and men shall be blessed in him all nations shall 〈◊〉 him blessed 18 Blessed 〈◊〉 the LORD God the God of Israel who onely doth wondrous things 19 And blessed be his glorious name for ever and let the whole earth be filled with his glory Amen and amen 20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended PSAL. LXXIII 1 The prophet prevailing in a temptation 2 sheweth the occasion thereof the prosperity of the wicked 13 the wound given thereby diffidenâ—â— 15 the victory over it knowledge of Gods purpose in destroying of the wicked and sustaining the righteous ¶ ‖ Or A psalm for Asaph A psalm of Asaph ‖ Or. yet TRuly God is good to Israel even to such as are †Heb. clean of heart of a clean heart 2 But as for me my feet were almost gone my steps had well-nigh slipt 3 * Job 21. â— Psal 3â— 1 Jer. 12.1 For I was envious at the foolish when I saw the prosperity of the wicked 4 For there are no bands in their death but their strength is †Heb. fat firm 5 They are not †Heb. in the trouble of other men in trouble as other men neither are they plagued †Heb. with like other men 6 Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain violence covereth them as a garment 7 Their eyes stand out with fatness †Heb. they pass the thoughts of the heart they have more then heart could wish 8 They are corrupt and speak wickedly concerning oppression they speak loftily 9 They set their mouth against the heavens and their tongue walketh through the earth 10 Therefore his people return hither and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them 11 And they say How doth God know and is there knowledge in the most High 12 Behold these are the ungodly who prosper in the world they increase in riches 13 Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain and washed my hands in innocency 14 For all the day long have I been plagued and †Heb. my chastisement was chastned every morning 15 If I say I will speak thus behold I should offend against the generation of thy children 16 When I thought to know this †Heb. it was labour in mine eyes it was too painful for me 17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God then understood I their end 18 Surely thou didst set them in slippery places thou castedst them down into destruction 19 How are they brought into desolation as in a moment they are utterly consumed with terrours 20 As a dream when one awaketh so O Lord when thou awakest thou shalt despise their image 21 Thus my heart was grieved and I was pricked in my reins 22 So foolish was I and †Heb. I knew not ignorant I was as a beast †Heb. with thee before thee 23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee thou hast holden me by my right hand 24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel and afterward receive me to glory 25 Whom have I in heaven but thee and there is none upon earth that I desire besides thee 26 My flesh and my heart faileth but God is the †Heb. rock strength of my heart and my portion for ever 27 For lo they that are far from thee shall perish thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee 28 But it is good for me to draw near to God I have put my trust in the Lord GOD that I may declare all thy works PSAL. LXXV 1 The prophet praiseth God 2 He promiseth to judge uprightly 4. LXXVI 1 A declaration of Gods majesty in the church 11 An exhortation to serve him reverently ¶ To the chief musician on Neginoth A psalm or song ‖ Or for Asaph of Asaph IN Judah is God known his name is great in Israel 2 In Solem also is his tabernacle and his dwelling-place in Zion 3 There brake he the arrows of the bowe the shield and the sword and the battel Selah 4 Thou art more glorious and excellent then the mountains of prey 5 The stout-hearted are spoiled they have slept their sleep and none of the men of might have found their hands 6 At thy rebuke O God of Jacob both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep 7 Thou even thou art to be feared and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry 8 Thou didst cause judgement to be heard from heaven the earth feared and was still 9 When God arose to judgement to save all the meek of the earth Selah 10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain 11 Vow and pay unto the LORD your God let all that be round about him bring presents †Heb. to fear unto him that ought to be feared 12 He shall cut off the spirit of princes he is terrible to the kings of the earth PSAL. LXXVII 1 The psalmist sheweth what fierce combat he had with diffidence 10 The victory which he had consideration of Gods great and gracious works ¶ To the chief musician to Jeduthun A psalm ‖ Or for Asaph of Asaph I Cried unto God with my voice even unto God with my voice and he gave ear unto me 2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord †Heb. my hand my sore ran in the night and ceased not my soul refused to be comforted 3 I remembred God and was troubled I complained and my spirit was over-whelmed Selah 4 Thou holdest mine eyes waking I am so troubled that I cannot speak 5 I have considered the days of old the years of ancient times 6 I call to remembrance my song in the night I commune with mine own heart and my spirit made diligent search 7 Will the Lord cast off for ever and will he be favourable no more 8 Is his mercy clean gone for ever doth his promise fail †Heb. to ceâ—â—ration and generation for evermore 9 Hath God forgotten to be gracious hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies Selah 10 And I said This is my infirmity but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High 11 I will remember the works of the LORD surely I will remember thy wonders of old 12 I will meditate also of all thy work and talk of thy doings 13 Thy way O God is in the sanctuary who is so great a God as our God 14 Thou art the God that doest wonders thou hast declared thy strength among the people 15 Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people the sons of Jacob and Joseph Selah 16 The waters saw thee O God the waters saw thee they were afraid the depths also were troubled 17 †Heb. the clouds were poured forth with water The clouds poured out water the skies sent out a sound thine arrows also went abroad 18 The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven the lightnings lightned the world the earth trembled and shook 19 Thy way is in the sea and thy path in the great waters and thy foot-steps are not known 20 * Exod. 14.19 Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron PSAL. LXXVIII 1 An exhortation both to learn and to preach the law of God 9 The story of Gods wrath against the incredulous and disobedient 67 The Israelites being rejected God chose Judah Zion and David ¶ ‖ Or A psalm for Asaph to give instruction Maschil of Asaph GIve ear O my people to my law incline your ears to the words of my mouth 2 * Ps 49.4 Mat. 13.35 I will open my mouth in a parable I will utter dark sayings of old 3 Which we have heard and known and our fathers have told us 4 We will not hide them from their children shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD and his strength and his wonderful works that he hath done 5 For he established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel which he commanded our fathers * Deu. 4.9 6.7 that they should make them known to their children 6 That the generation to come might know them even the children which should be born who should arise and declare them to their children 7 That they might sâ—t their hope in God and not forget the works of God but keep his commandments 8 And might not be as their fathers a stubborn and rebellious generation a generation †Heb. that prepared not their heart that set not their heart aright and whose spirit was not stedfast with God 9 The children of Ephraim being armed and †Heb. throwing forth carrying bowes turned back in the day of battel 10 They kept not the covenant of God and refused to walk in his law 11 And forgat his works and his wonders that he had shewed them 12 Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt in the field of Zoan 13 * Exod. 14.21 He divided the sea and caused them to pass through and he made the waters to stand as an heap 14 * Ex. 13.25 14.24 In the day-time also he led them with a cloud and all the night with a light of fire 15 * Ex. 17.6 Numb 20.11 Ps 105 4â— 1 Cor. 20. 4. LXXX 1 The psalmist in his praver complaineth of the miseries of the church 8 Gods former favours are turned into judgements 14 He prayeth for deliverance ¶ To the chief musician upon Shoshannim Eduth A psalm ‖ Or for Asaph of Asaph GIve ear O shepherd of Israel thou that leadest Joseph like a flock thou that dwellest between the cherubims shine forth 2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength and †Heb. come for salvation to us come and save us 3 Turn us again O God and cause thy face to shine and we shall be saved 4 O LORD God of hosts how long †Heb. wilt thou smoke wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people 5 Thou feedest them with the bread of tears and givest them tears to drink in great measure 6 Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours and our enemies laugh among themselves 7 Turn us again O God of hosts and cause thy face to shine and we shall be saved 8 Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt thou hast cast out the heathen and planted it 9 Thou preparedst room before it and didst cause it to take deep root and it filled the land 10 The hills were covered with the shadow of it and the boughs thereof were like †Heb. the cedars of God the goodly cedars 11 She sent out her boughs unto the sea her branches unto the river 12 Why hast thou then broken down her bedges so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her 13 The boar out of the wood doth waste it and the wilde beast of the field doth devour it 14 Return we beseech thee O God of hosts look down from heaven and behold and visit this vine 15 And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted and the branch that thou madest strong for thy self 16 It is burnt with fire it is cut down they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance 17 Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thy self 18 So will not we go back from thee quicken us and we will call upon thy name 19 Turn us again O LORD God of hosts cause thy face to shine and we shall be saved PSAL. backwardness 20 He powerfully delivereth his out of Babylon HEar ye this O house of Jacob which are called by the name of Israel and are come forth out of the waters of Judah which swear by the name of the LORD and make mention of the God of Israel but not in truth nor in righteousness 2 For they call themselves of the holy city and stay themselves upon the God of Israel the LORD of hosts is his name 3 I have declared the former things from the beginning and they went forth out of my mouth and I shewed them I did them suddenly and they came to pass 4 Because I knew that thou art †Heb. bard obstinate and thy neck is an iron sinew and thy brow brass 5 I have even from the beginning declared it to thee before it came to pass I shewed it thee lest thou shouldest say Mine idol hath done them and my graven imgage and my molten image hath commanded them 6 Thou hast heard see all this and will not ye declare it I have shewed thee new things from this time even hidden things and thou didst not know them 7 They are created now and not from the beginning even before the day when thou heardest them not lest thou shouldest say Behold I knew them 8 Yea thou heardest not yea thou knewest not yea from that time that thine ear was not opened for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously and wast called a transgressour from the womb 9 ¶ For my names sake will I defer mine anger and for my praise will I refrain for thee that I cut thee not off 10 Behold I have refined thee but not ‖ Or for silver with silver I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction 11 For mine own sake even for mine own sake will I do it for how should my name be polluted and * Ch. 42.8 I will not give my glory unto another 12 ¶ Hearken unto me O Jacob and Israel my called I am he I am the * Ch. 41.4 and 44.6 Rev. 1.17 and 22.13 first I also am the last 13 Mine hand also hath said the foundation of the earth and ‖ Or the palm of my right hand hath spread out my right hand hath spanned the heavens when I call unto them they stand up together 14 All ye assemble your selves and hear which among them hath declared these things the LORD hath loved him he will do his pleasure on Babylon and his arm shall be on the Caldeans 15 I even I have spoken yea I have called him I have brought him and he shall make his way prosperous 16 ¶ Come ye near unto me hear ye this I have not spoken in secret from the beginning from the time that it was there am I and now the Lord GOD and his spirit hath sent me 17 Thus saith the LORD thy redeemer the holy One of Israel I am the LORD thy God which reacheth thee to profit which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go 18 O that thou hadst hearkned to my commandments then had thy peace been as a river and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea 19 Thy seed also had been as the sand and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me 20 ¶ Go ye forth of Babylon flee ye from the Caldeans with a voice of singing declare ye tell this utter it even to the end of the earth say ye the LORD hath * Ex. 19.4.5 6. redeemed his servant Jacob. 21 And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts he * Ex. 17.6 Nu. 20.11 caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them he clave the rock also and the waters gushed out 22 * Ch. 57.21 There is no peace saith the LORD unto the wicked CHAP. LVI 1 The prophet exhorteth to sanctification 3 He promiseth it shall be general without respect of persons 9 He inveigheth against blinde watchmen THus saith the LORD Keep ye ‖ Or equity judgement and do justice for my salvation is near to come and my righteousness to be revealed 2 Blessed is the man that doeth this and the son of man that layeth hold on it that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it and keepeth his hand from doing any evil 3 ¶ Neither let the son of the stranger that hath joyned himself to the LORD speak saying The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people neither let the eunuch say Behold I am a drie tree 4 For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths and choose the things that please me and take hold of my covenant 5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better then of sons and of daughters I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off 6 Also the sons of the stranger that joyn themselves to the LORD to serve him and to love the name of the LORD to be his servants every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it and taketh hold of my covenant 7 Even them will I * Ch. 2.2 bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar for * Mat. 21.13 Mar. 11.17 Lu. 19.46 mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people 8 The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith Yet will I gather others to him †Heb. to his gathered besides those that are gathered unto him 9 ¶ All ye beasts of the field come to devour yea all ye beasts in the forest 10 His watchmen are blinde they are all ignorant they are all dumb dogs they cannot bark ‖ Or dreaming or talking in their sleep sleeping lying down loving to slumber 11 Yea they are †Heb. strong of appetite greedy dogs which †Heb. know not to be satisfied can never have enough and they are shepherds that cannot understand they all look to their own way every one for his gain from his quarter 12 Come ye say they I will fetch wine and we will fill our selves with strong drink and to morrow shall be as this day and much more abundant CHAP. XIII 1 In the â—â—pe of a lineâ— girdle kidden at Euphrates God prefigureth the destruction of his people 12Vnder the parable of the bottles filled with wine he foretelleth their drunkenness in misery 15 He exhorteth to prevent their future judgements 22 He sheweth their abominations are the cause thereof THus saith the LORD unto me Go and get thee a linen girdle and put it upon thy loyns and put it not in water 2 So I got a girdle according to the word of the LORD and put it on my loyns 3 And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time saying 4 Take the girdle that thou hast got which is upon thy loyns and arise go to Euphrates and hide it there in a hole of the rock 5 So I went and hid it by Euphrates as the LORD commanded me 6 And it came to pass after many days that the LORD said unto me Arise go to Euphrates and take the girdle from thence which I commanded thee to hide there 7 Then I went to Euphrates and digged and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it and behold the girdle was marred it was profitable for nothing 8 Then the word of the LORD came unto me saying 9 Thus saith the LORD After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem 10 This evil people which refuse to hear my words which walk in the ‖ Or stubb â—nness imagination of their heart and walk after other gods to serve them and to worship them shall even be as this girdle which is good for nothing 11 For as the girdle cleaveth to the loyns of a man so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah saith the LORD that they might be unto me for a people for a name and for a praise for a glory but they would not hear 12 ¶ Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Every bottle shall be filled with wine and they shall say unto thee Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine 13 Then shalt thou say unto them Thus saith the LORD Behold I will fill all the inhabitants of this land even the kings that sit upon Davids throne and the priests and the prophets and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with drunkenness 14 And I will dash them †Heb. a man against his brother one against another even the fathers and the sons together saith the LORD I will not pity nor spare not have mercy †Heb. from destroying them but destroy them 15 ¶ Hear ye and give ear be not proud for the LORD hath spoken 16 Give glory to the LORD your God before he cause * If. 8.22 darkness and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains and while ye look for light he turn it into the shadow of death and make it gross darkness 17 But if ye will not hear it my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride and * La. 1.2 16 and 2.18 mine eye shall weep sore and run down with tears because the LORDs flock is carried away captive 18 Say unto the king and to the queen Humble your selves sit down for your ‖ Or head-tires principalities shall come down even the crown of your glory 19 The cities of the south shall be shut up and none shall open them Judah shall be carried away captive all of it it shall be wholly carried away captive 20 Lift up your eyes and behold them that come from the north where is the flock that was given thee thy beautiful flock 21 What wilt thou say when he shall †Heb. visit upon punish thee for thou hast taught them to be captains and as chief over thee shall not sorrows take thee as a woman in travail 22 ¶ And it thou say in thine heart * Ch 5.19 and 16.10 Wherefore come these things upon me for the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered and thy heels ‖ Or shall be violently taken away made bare 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots then may ye also do good that are †Heb. caught accustomed to do evil 24 Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness 25 This is thy lot the portion of thy measures from me saith the LORD because thou hast forgotten me and trusted in falshood 26 Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face that thy shame may appear 27 I have seen thine adulteries and thy neighings the lewdness of thy whoredom and thine abominations on the hills in the fields wo unto thee O Jerusalem wilt thou not be made clean †Heb. after when â—et when shall it once be CHAP. XIV 1 The grievous famine 7 causeth Jeremiah to pray 10 The Lord will not be intreated for the people 13 Lying prophets are no excuse for them 17 Jeremiah is moved to complain for them THe word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning †Heb. the words of the dearths or restraints the dearth 2 Judah mourneth and the gates thereof languish they are black unto the ground and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up 3 And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters they came to the pits and found no water they returned with their vessels empty they were ashamed and confounded and covered their heads 4 Because the ground is chapt for there was no rain in the earth the plowmen were ashamed they covered their heads 5 Yea the hind also calved in the field and forsook it because there was no grass 6 And the wilde asses did stand in the high places they snuffed up the wind
upon all the inhabitants of the earth saith the LORD of hosts 30 Therefore prophesie thou against them all these words and say unto them The LORD shall * Joel 3.16 Alli 1.2 roar from on high and utter his voice from his holy habitation he shall mightily roar upon his habitation he shall give a shout as they that tread the grapes against all the inhabitants of the earth 31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth for the LORD hath a controversie with the nations he will plead with all flesh he will give them that are wicked to the sword saith the LORD 32 Thus saith the LORD of hosts Behold evil shall go forth from nation to nation and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth 33 And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth they shall not be * Ch. 16.4 lamented neither gathered nor buried they shall be dung upon the ground 34 ¶ * Ch. 4.8 6.25 Howl ye shepherds and cry and wallow your selves in the ashes ye principal of the flock for †Heb. your days for slaughter the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished and ye shall fall like †Heb. a vessil of desire a pleasant vessel 35 And †Heb. flight shall perish from the shepherds and â—scapint from c. the shepherds shall have no way to flee nor the principal of the flock to escape 36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds and an howling of the principal of the flock shall be heard for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture 37 And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD 38 He hath forsaken his covert as the lion for their land is †Heb. 〈◊〉 desolation desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressour and because of his fierce anger CHAP. XXVI 1 Jeremiah by promises and threatnings exhorteth to repentants 8 He is therefore apprehended 10 and arraigned 11 His apology 16 He is quit in judgement by the example of Miâ—ah 20 and of Vrijah 24 and by the care of Ahikans IN the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word from the LORD saying 2 Thus saith the LORD Stand in the court of the LORDS house and speak unto all the cities of Judah which come to worship in the LORDS house all the words that I command thee to speak unto them * Act. â—0 27 diminish not a word 3 If so be they will hearken and turn every man from his evil way that I may * Ch. 18.8 repent me of the evil which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings 4 And thou shalt say unto them Thus saith the LORD If ye will not hearken to me to walk in my law which I have set before you 5 To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets whom I sent unto you both rising up early and sending them but ye have not hearkned 6 Then will I make this house like * 1 Sa. 4.12 Ps 78.60 Ch. 7.12 14 Shiloh and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth 7 So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD 8 ¶ Now it came to pass when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak unto all the people that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him saying Thou shalt surely die 9 Why halt thou prophesied in the name of the LORD saying This house shall be like Shiloh and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant and all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD 10 ¶ When the princes of Judah heard these things then they came up from the kings house unto the house of the LORD and sat down ‖ Or at the door in the entry of the new gate of the LORDS house 11 Then spake the priests and the prophets unto the princes and to all the people saying †Heb. image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up 8 ¶ Wherefore at that time certain Caldeans came â—â—â—r and accused the Jews 9 They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar O king live for ever 10 Thou O king hast made a decree that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet flute harp sackbut psaltery and dulcimer and all kinds of musick shall fall down and worship the golden image 11 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fierâ— furnace 12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego these men O king †Cald. have sâ—t never and upon thâ—s have not regarded thee they serve not thy gods nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up 13 ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego then they brought these men before the king 14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them Is it ‖ Or of purpose at Ex. 21.23 true O Shadrath Meshach and Abed-nego do not ye serve my gods nor worship the golden image which I have set up 15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet flute harp sackbut psaltery and dulcimer and all kinds of musick ye fall down and worship the image which I have made well but if ye worship not ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands 16 Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego answered and said to the king O Nebuchadnezzar we are not careful to answer thee in this matter 17 If it be so our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and he will deliver us out of thine hand O king 18 But if not be it known unto thee O king that we will not serve thy gods nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up 19 ¶ Then was Nebuchadnezzar †Cald. filled full of fury and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego therefore he spake and commanded that they should hear the furnace one seven times more then it was wont to be heat 20 And he commanded the †Cald. mighty of strengh most mighty men that were in his army to binde Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace 21 Then these men were bound in their ‖ Or mantles coats their hosen and their ‖ Or turbants hats and their other garments and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace 22 Therefore because the kings †Cald. word commandment was urgent and the furnace exceeding hot the ‖ Or spark flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego 23 And these three men Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace 24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied and rose up in haste and spake and said unto his ‖ Or governours counsellours Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire They answered and said unto the king True O king 25 He answered and said Lo I see four men loose walking in the midst of the fire and †Cald. â—oâ—re is no â—urt in â—com they have no hurt and the form of the fourth is like the son of God 26 ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the †Cald. 〈◊〉 mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spake and said Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego ye servants of the most high God come forth and come hither Then Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego came forth of the midst of the fire 27 And the princes governours and captains and the kings counsellours being gathered together saw these men upon whose bodies the fire had no power nor was an hair of their head singed neither were their coats changed nor the smell of fire had passed on them 28 Then Nebuchadnezzar spake and said Blessed be the God of Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego who hath sent his angel and delivered his servants that trusted in him and have changed the kings word and yeelded their bodies that they might not serve nor worship any god except their own God 29 Therefore †Gold a decree is made by me I make a decree That every people nation and language which speak †Cald. â—â—our â— any thing amiss against the God of Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego shall be * Ch. 2.5 †Cald. made pieces cut in pieces and their houses shall be made a dunghil because there is no other god that can deliver after this sort 30 Then the king †Cald. made to prosper promoted Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego in the province of Babylon CHAP. IV. 1 Nebuchadnezzar confesseth Gods kingdom 4 maketh relation of his dream which the Magitians could not interpret 8 Daniel beareth the dream 19 He interprets it 28 The story of the event NEbuchadnezzar the king unto all people nations and languages that dwell in all the earth Peace be multiplied unto you 2 †Cald. It was feemly before me I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me 3 How great are his signs and how mighty are his wonders his kingdom is * Ch. 2.44 an everlasting kingdom and his dominion is from generation to generation 4 ¶ I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house and flourishing in my palace 5 I saw a dream which made me afraid and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me 6 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream 7 Then came in the magicians the astrologers the Caldeans and the soothsayers and I told the dream before them but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof 8 ¶ But at the last Daniel came in before me whose name was Belteshazzar according to the name of my God and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods and before him I told the dream saying 9 O Belteshazzar * Ch. 2.48 master of the magicians Because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee and no secret troubleth thee tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen and the interpretation thereof 10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed †Cald. I was seeing I saw and behold a tree in the midst of the earth and the height thereof was great 11 The tree grew and was strong and the height thereof reached unto heaven and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth 12 The leaves thereof were fair and the fruit thereof much and in it was meat for all the beasts
†Cald. a prolonging in life was given them their lives were prolonged for a season and time 13 I saw in the night-visions and behold one like the son of man came with the clouds of heaven and came to the Ancient of days and they brought him near before him 14 And there was given him dominion and glory and a kingdom that all people nations and languages should serve him his dominion is * Ch. 2.44 Mic. 4.7 Luk. 1.33 an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed 15 ¶ I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my †Cald. sheath body and the visions of my head troubled me 16 I came near unto one of them that stood by and asked him the truth of all this so he told me and made me know the interpretation of the things 17 These great beasts which are four are four kings which shall arise out of the earth 18 But the saints of the †Cald. bâ—â—â—enes that is saints or places most High shall take the kingdom and possess the kingdom for ever even for ever and ever 19 Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast which was diverse †Cald. from all these from all the others exceeding dreadful whose teeth were of iron and his nails of brass which devoured brake in pieces and stamped the residue with his feet 20 And of the ten horns that were in his head and of the other which came up and before whom three fell even of that horn that had eyes and a mouth that spake very great things whose look was more stout then his fellows 21 I beheld and the same horn made war with the saints and prevailed against them 22 Until the Ancient of days came and judgement was given to the saints of the most High and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom 23 Thus he said The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth which shall be diverse from all kingdoms and shall devour the whole earth and shall tread it down and break it in pieces 24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise and another shall rise after them and he shall be diverse from the first and he shall subdue three kings 25 And he shall speak great words against the most High and shall wear out the saints of the most High and think to change times and laws and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time 26 But the judgement shall sit and they shall take away his dominion to consume and to destroy it unto the end 27 And the * Luk. 1.33 kingdom and dominion and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and all ‖ Or rulers dominions shall serve and obey him 28 Hitherto is the end of the matter As for me Daniel my cogitations much troubled me and my countenance changed in me but I kept the matter in my heart CHAP. VIII 1 Daniels vision of the ram and he-goat 13 The two thousand three hundred days of sacrifice 15 Gabriel comforteth Daniel and interpreteth the vision IN the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me even unto me Daniel after that which appeared unto me at the first 2 And I saw in a vision and it came to pass when I saw that I was at Shushan in the palace which is in the province of Elam and I saw in a vision and I was by the river of Ulai 3 Then I lifted up mine eyes and saw and behold there stood before the river a ram which had two horns and the two horns were high but one was higher then †Heb. the second the other and the higher came up last 4 I saw the ram pushing west-ward and north-ward and southward so that no beasts might stand before him neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand but he did according to his will and became great 5 And as I was considering behold an he-goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth and ‖ Or none touched him in the earth touched not the ground and the goat had †Heb. a horn of sight a notable horn between his eyes 6 And he came to the ram that had two horns which I had seen standing before the river and ran unto him in the fury of his power 7 And I saw him come close unto the ram and he was moved with choler against him and smote the ram and brake his two horns and there was no power in the ram to stand before him but he cast him down to the ground and stamped upon him and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand 8 Therefore the he-goat waxed very great and when he was strong the great horn was broken and for it came up four notable ones * Ch. 23.4 toward the four winds of heaven 9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn which waxed exceeding great toward the south and toward the east and toward the * Ps 48.2 Ezek. 20.2 Ezek. 20. â— pleasant land 10 And it waxed great even ‖ Or against the host to the host of heaven and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground and stamped upon them 11 Yea he magnified himself even ‖ Or against to the prince of the host and ‖ Or from him by him the daily sacrifice was taken away and the place of his sanctuary was cast down 12 And ‖ Or the host was given over for the transgression against the daily sacrifice an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression and it cast down the truth to the ground and it practised and prospered 13 ¶ Then I heard one saint speaking and another saint said unto ‖ The numberer of secrets or the wonderful numberer †Heb. IV. 1 The second declareth the power of a king 14 The third the force of women 33 and of truth 41 The third is judged to be wisest 47 and obtaineth letters of the king to build Jerusalem 58 He praiseth God and sheweth his brethren what he had done THen the second that had spoken of the strength of the king began to say 2 O ye men do not men excel in strength that ‖ Or have the command bear rule over sea and land and all things in them 3 But yet the king is more mighty for he is lord of all these things and hath dominion over them and whatsoever he commandeth them they do 4 If he bid them make war the one against the other they do it if he send them out against the enemies they go and break down mountains walls and towers 5 They slay and are slain and transgress not the kings commandment if they get the victory they bring all to the king as well the spoil as all things else 6 Likewise for those that are no souldiers and have not to do with wars but use husbandry when they have reaped again that which they had sown they bring it to the king and compel one another to pay tribute unto the king 7 And yet he is but one man if he command to kill they kill if he command to spare they spare 8 If he command to smite they smite if he command to make desolate they make desolate if he command to build they build 9 If he command to cut down they cut down if he command to plant they plant 10 So all his people and his armies obey him furthermore he lieth down he eateth and drinketh and taketh his rest 11 And these keep watch round about him neither ‖ Or can may any one depart and do his own business neither disobey they him in any thing 12 O ye men how should not the king be mightiest when in such sort he is obeyed And he held his tongue 13 ¶ Then the third who had spoken of women and of the truth this was Zorobabel began to speak 14 O ye men it is not the great king nor the multitude of men neither is it wine that †Heb. is of force excelleth who is it then that ruleth them or hath the lordship over them are they not women 15 Women have born the king and all the people that bear rule by sea and land 16 Even of them came they and they nourished them up that planted the vineyards from whence the wine cometh 17 These also make garments for men these bring glory unto men and without women cannot men be 18 Yea and if men have gathered together gold and silver or any other goodly thing do they not love a woman which is comely in favour and beauty 19 And letting all those things go do they not gape and even with open mouth fix their eyes fast on her and have not all men more desire unto her then unto silver or gold or any goodly thing whatsoever 20 A man leaveth his own father that brought him up and his own countrey and cleaveth unto his wife 21 He sticks not to spend his life with his wife and remembreth neither father nor mother nor countrey 22 By this also you must know that women have dominion over you do ye not labour and toil and give and bring all to the woman 23 Yea a man taketh his sword and goeth his way to rob and to steal to sail upon the sea and upon rivers 24 And looketh upon a lion and goeth in the darkness and when he hath stoln spoiled and robbed he bringeth it to his love 25 Wherefore a man loveth his wife better then father or mother 26 Yea many there be that have ‖ Or grown desperate run out of their wits for women and become servants for their sakes 27 Many also have perished have erred and sinned for women 28 And now do you not beleeve me is not the king great in his power do not all regions fear to touch him 29 Yet did I see him and Apame the kings concubine the daughter of the admirable ‖ Jos antiq l. 11. c. 4. Rabsaces Themasiu◠Bartacus sitting at the right hand of the king 30 And taking the crown from the kings head and setting it upon her own head she also stroke the king with her left hand 31 And yet ‖ Or hereat for all this the king gaped and gazed upon her with open month if she laughed upon him he laughed also but if she took any displeasure at him the king was fain to flatter that she might ‖ Or be friends with him be reconciled to him again 32 O ye men how can it be but women should be strong seeing they do thus 33 Then the king and the princes looked one upon another so he began to speak of the truth 34 O ye men are not women strong great is the earth high is the heaven swift is the sun in his course for he compasseth the heavens round about and fetcheth his course again to his own place in one day 35 Is he not great that maketh these things therefore great is the truth and stronger then all things 36 All the earth ‖ Or praiseth the truth Athanasius calleth upon the truth and the heaven blesseth it all works shake and tremble at it and with it is no unrighteous thing 37 Wine is wicked the king is wicked women are wicked all the children of men are wicked and such are all their wicked works and there is no truth in them in their unrighteousness also they shall perish 38 As for the truth it endureth and is always strong it liveth and conquereth for evermore 39 With her there is no accepting of persons or rewards but she doeth the things that are just and refraineth from all unjust and wicked things and all men do well like of her works 40 Neither in her judgement is any
from them a wicked heart that thy law might bring forth fruit in them 21 For the first Adam bearing a wicked heart transgressed and was overcome and so be all they that are born of him 22 Thus infirmity was made permanent and the law also in the heart of the people with the malignity of the root so that the good departed away and the evil abode still 23 So the times passed away and the years were brought to an end * 1 Sam. 16.13 then didst thou raise thee up a servant called David 24 * 2 Sam. 5.2 7.5 13. Whom thou commandedst to build a city unto thy name and to offer incense and oblations unto thee therein 25 When this was done many years then they that inhabited the city forsook thee 26 And in all things did even as Adam and all his generations had done for they also had a wicked heart 27 And so thou gavest thy city over into the hands of thine enemies 28 Are their deeds then any better that inhabit Babylon that they should therefore have the dominion over Sion 29 For when I came thither and had seen impieties without number then my soul saw many evil doers in this thirtieth year so that my heart failed me 30 For I have seen how thou sufferest them sinning and hast spared wicked doers and hast destroyed thy people and hast preserved thine enemiâ—â— and hast not signified it 31 ‖ Or I conceive I do not remember how this way may be left Are they then of Babylon better then they of Sion 32 Or is there any other people that knoweth thee besides Israel or what generation hath so beleeved thy covenants as Jacob 33 And yet their reward appeareth not and their labour hath no fruit for I have gone here and there through the heathen and I see that they ‖ Or abound flow in wealth and think not upon thy commandments 34 Weigh thou therefore our wickedness now in the balance and theirs also that dwell in the world and so shall thy name no where be found but in Israel 35 Or when was it that they which dwell upon the earth have not sinned in thy sight or what people hath so kept thy commandments 36 Thou shalt finde that Israel by name hath kept thy precepts but not the heathen CHAP. IV. 1 The angel declareth the ignorance of Esdras in Gods judgements 13 and adviseth him not to meddle with things above his reach 23 Nevertheless Esdras asketh divers questions and receiveth answers to them ANd the angel that was sent unto me whose name was Uriel gave me an answer 2 And said Thy heart hath gone too far in this world and thinkest thou to â—omprehend the way of the most High 3 Then said I Yea my lord and he answered me and said I am sent to shâ—w thee three ways and to set forth three similitudes before thee 4 Whereof if thou canst declare me one I will shew thee also the way that thou desirest to see and I shall shew thee from whence the wicked heart cometh 5 And I said Tell on my lord Then said he unto me Go thy way weigh me the weight of the fire or measure me the blast of the wind or call me again the day that is past 6 Then answered I and said What man is able to do that that thou shouldest ask such things of me 7 And he said unto me If I should ask thee how great dwellings are in the midst of the sea or how many springs are in the beginning of the deep or how many springs are above the firmament or which are the outgoings of paradise 8 Peradventure thou wouldest say unto me I never went down into the deep nor as yet into hell neither did I ever climbe up into heaven 9 Nevertheless now have I asked thee but onely of the fire and wind and of the day where-through thou hast passed and of things from which thou canst not be separated and yet canst thou give me no answer of them 10 He said moreover unto me Thine own things and such as are grown up with thee canst thou not know 11 How should thy vessel then be able to comprehend the way of the Highest and the world being now outwardly corrupted to understand the ‖ Or incorruption corruption that is evident in my sight 12 Then said I unto him It were better that we were not at all then that we should live still in wickedness and to suffer and not to know wherefore 13 He answered me and said I went into a forest into a plain and the * Judg. 9.8 2 Chr. 25.18 trees took counsel 14 And said Come let us go and make war against the sea that it may depart away before us and that we may make us more woods 15 The flouds of the sea also in like manner took counsel and said Come let us go up and subdue the woods of the plain that there also we may make us another countrey 16 The thought of the wood was in vain for the fire came and consumed it 17 The thought of the flouds of the sea came likewise to nought for the sand stood up and stopped them 18 If thou wert judge now betwixt these two whom wouldest thou begin to justifie or whom wouldest thou condemn 19 I answered and said Verily it is a foolish thought that they have both devised for ‖ Or the land the ground is given unto the wood and the sea also hath his place to bear his ‖ Or waves flouds 20 Then answered he me and said Thou hast given a right judgement but thy judgest thou not thyself also 21 For like as ‖ the land the ground is given unto the wood and the sea to his flouds even so * Is 55.8 9. Joh. 3.31 1 Cor. 2.14 they that dwell upon the earth may understand nothing but that which is upon the earth and he that dwelleth above the heavens may onely understand the things that are above the height of the heavens 22 Then answered I and said I beseech thee O Lord let me have understanding 23 For it was not my minde to be curious of the high things but of such as pass by us daily namely wherefore Israel is given up as a reproach to the heathen and for what cause the people whom thou hast loved is given over unto ungodly nations and why the law of our forefathers is brought to nought and the written covenants come ‖ Or no where to none effect 24 And we pass away out of the world as grashoppers and our life is astonishment and fear and we are not worthy to obtain mercy 25 What will he then do unto his name whereby we are called of these things have I asked 26 Then answered he me and said The more thou searchest the more thou shalt marvel for the world hasteth fast to pass away 27 And cannot comprehend the things that are promised to the righteous in time to
of him come we all and the people also whom thou bast chosen 55 All this have I spoken before thee O Lord because thou madest the world for our sakes 56 As for the other people which also come of Adam thou hast said that they are nothing but be like unto spittle and hast likened the abundance of them unto a drop that falleth from a vessel 57 And now O Lord behold these heathen which have ever been reputed as nothing have begun to be lords over us and to devour us 58 But we thy people whom thou hast called thy first-born thy onely begotten and thy fervent lover are given into their hands 59 If the world now be made for our sakes why do we not possess an inheritance with the world how long shall this endure CHAP. VII 4 The way is narrow 12 When it was made narrow 18 All shall die and rise again 33 Christ shall sit in judgement 46 God hath not made paradise in vain 62 and is merciful ANd when I had made an end of speaking these words there was sent unto me the angel which had been sent unto me the nights afore 2 And he said unto me Up Esdras and hear the words that I am come to tell thee 3 And I said Speak on my God Then said he unto me The sea is set in a wide place that it might be deep and great 4 But put the case the entrance were narrow and like a river 5 Who then could go into the sea to look upon it and to rule it if he went not through the narrow how could he come into the broad 6 There is also another thing A city is builded and set upon a broad field and is full of all good things 7 The entrance thereof is narrow and is set in a ‖ Or steep plain dangerous place to fall like as if there were a fire on the right hand and on the left a deep water 8 And one onely path between them both even between the fire and the water so small that there could but one man go there at once 9 If this city now were given unto a man for an inheritance if he never shall pass the danger set before it how shall he receive this inheritance 10 And I said It is so Lord. Then said he unto me Even so also is Israels portion 11 Because for their sakes I made the world and when Adam transgressed my statutes then was decreed that now is done 12 Then were the entrances of this world made narrow full of sorrow and travel they are but few and evil full of perils and very pain ful 13 For the entrances of the ‖ Or greater elder world were wide and sure and brought immortal fruit 14 If then they that live labour not to enter these strait and vain things they can never receive those that are laid up for them 15 Now therefore why disquietest thou thy self seeing thou art but a corruptible man and why art thou moved whereas thou art but mortal 16 Why hast thou not considered in thy minde this thing that is to come rather then that which is present 17 Then answered I and said O Lord that bearest rule thou hast ordained in thy * Deut 8.1 law that the righteous should inherit these things but that the ungodly should perish 18 Nevertheless the righteous shall suffer strait things and hope for wide for they that have done wickedly have suffered the strait things and yet shall not see the wide 19 And he said unto me There is no Judge above God and none that hath understanding above the Highest 20 For there be many that perish in this life because they despise the law of God that is set before them 21 For God hath given strait commandment to such as came what they should do to live even as they came and what they should observe to avoid punishment 22 Nevertheless they were not obedient unto him but spake against him and imagined vain things 23 And deceived themselves by their wicked deeds and said of the most High that he is not and knew not his ways 24 But his law have they despised and denied his covenants in his statutes have they not been faithful and have not performed his works 25 And therefore Esdras for the empty are empty things and for the full are the full things 26 Behold the time shall come that these tokens which I have told thee shall come to pass and the bride shall appear and she coming forth shall be seen that now is withdrawn from the earth 27 And whosoever is delivered from the aforesaid evils shall see my wonders 28 For my son Jesus shall be revealed with those that be with him and they that remain shall rejoyce within four hundred years 29 After these years shall my sun Christ die and all men that have life 30 And the world shall be turned into the old silence seven days like as in the ‖ Or first beginning former judgements so that no man shall remain 31 And after seven days the world that yet awaketh not shall be raised up and that shall die that is corrupt 32 And the earth shall restore those that are asleep in her and so shall the dust those that dwell in silence and the secret places shall deliver those souls that were committed unto them 33 And the most High shall appear upon the seat of judgement and misery shall pass away and the long-suffering shall have an end 34 But judgement onely shall remain truth shall stand and saith shall wax strong 35 And the work shall follow and the reward shall be shewed and the good deeds shall be of force and wicked deeds shall bear no rule 36 Then said * Gen. 1â— 23 Abraham prayed first for the Sodomites and * Ex. 32.11 Moses for the fathers that sinned in the wilderness 37 And Jesus after him for Israel in the time of ‖ Or Acâ—or Achan 38 And Samuel and * 2 Sam. 24.17 David for the destruction and * 2 Chr. 6.14 Solomon for them that should come to the sanctuary 39 And * 1 Kings 17.21 18.42.45 Helias for those that received rain and for the dead that he might live 40 And * 2 Kings 19.15 Ezechias for the people in the time of Sennacherib and many for many 41 Even so now seeing corruption is grown up and wickedness increased and the righteous have prayed for the ungodly wherefore shall it not be so now also 42 He answered me and said This present life is not the end where much glory doth abide therefore have they prayed for the weak 43 But the day of doom shall be the end of this time and the beginning of the immortality for to come wherein corruption is past 44 Intemperancy is at an end infidelity is cut off righteousness is grown and truth is sprung up 45 Then shall no man be able to save him that is destroyed nor to
last things high things which the most High will do unto them that dwell upon earth in the last days So I slept that night and another like as he commanded me CHAP. XI 1 He seeth in his dream an eagle coming out of the sea 37 and a lion out of a wood talking to the eagle THen saw I a dream and behold there came up from the sea an eagle which had twelve feathered wings and three heads 2 And I saw and behold she spread her wings over all the earth and all the winds of the air blew on her and were gathered together 3 And I beheld and out of her feathers there grew other contrary feathers and they became little feathers and small 4 But her heads were at rest the head in the midst was greater then the other yet rested †Lat. sa it with the residue 5 Moreover I beheld and so the eagle flew with her feathers and reigned upon earth and over them that dwelt therein 6 And I saw that all things under heaven were subject unto her and no man spake against her no not one creature upon earth 7 And I beheld and so the eagle rose upon her talons and spake to her feathers saying 8 Watch not all at once sleep every one in his own place and watch by course 9 But set the heads be preserved for the last 10 And I beheld and so the voice went not out of her heads but from the midst of her body 11 And I numbred her contrary feathers and behold there were eight of them 12 And I looked and behold on the right side there arose one feather and reigned over all the earth 13 And so it was that when it reigned the end of it came and the place thereof appeared no more so the next following stood up and reigned and had a great time 14 And it hapned that when it reigned the end of it came also like as the first so that it appeared no more 15 Then came there a voice unto it and said 16 Hear thou that hast born rule over the earth so long this I say unto thee before thou beginnest to appear no more 17 There shall none after thee attain unto thy time neither unto the half thereof 18 Then arose the third and reigned as the other before and appeared no more also 19 So went it with all the residue one after another as that every one reigned and then appeared no more 20 Then I beheld and so in process of time the feathers that followed stood up upon the right side that they might rule also and some of them ruled but within a whise they appeared no more 21 For some of them were set up but ruled not 22 After this I looked and behold the twelve feathers appeared no more nor the two little feathers 23 And there was no more upon the eagles body but three heads that rested and six little wings 24 Then saw I also that two little feathers divided themselves from the six and remained under the head that was upon the right side for the four continued in their place 25 And I beheld and so the feathers that were under the wing thought to set up themselves and to have the rule 26 And I beheld and so there was one set up but shortly it appeared no more 27 And the second was sooner away then the first 28 And I beheld and so the two that remained thought also in themselves to reign 29 And when they so thought behold there awaked one of the heads that were at rest namely it that was in the midst for that was greater then the two other heads 30 And then I saw that the two other heads were joyned with it 31 And behold the head was turned with them that were with it and did eat up the two feathers under the wing that would have reigned 32 But this head put the whole earth in fear and bare rule in it over all those that dwelt upon the earth with much oppression and it had the governance of the world more then all the wings that had been 33 And after this I beheld and so the head that was in the midst suddenly appeared no more like as the wings 34 But there remained the two heads which also in like sort ruled upon the earth and over those that dwelt therein 35 And I beheld and so the head upon the right side devoured it that was upon the left side 36 Then I heard a voice which said unto me Look before thee and consider the thing that thou seest 37 And I beheld and so as it were a roaring lion chased out of the wood and I saw that he sent out a mans voice unto the eagle and said 38 Hear thou I will talk with thee and the Highest shall say unto thee 39 Art not thou it that remainest of the four beasts whom I made to reign in my world that the end of their times might come through them 40 And the fourth came and over came all the beasts that were past and had power over the world with great fearfulness and over the whole compass of the earth with much wicked oppression and so long time dwelt he upon the earth with deceit 41 For the earth hast thou not judged with truth 42 For thou hast afflicted the meek thou hast hurt the peaceable thou hast loved liars and destroyed the dwellings of them that brought forth fruit and hast cast down the walls of such as did thee no harm 43 Therefore is thy wrongful dealing come up unto the Highest and thy pride unto the Mighty 44 The Highest also hath looked upon the proud times and behold they are ended and his abominations are fulfilled 45 And therefore appear no more thou eagle nor thy horrible wings nor thy wicked feathers nor thy malicious heads nor thy hurtful claws nor all thy vain body 46 That all the earth may be refreshed and may return being delivered from thy violence and that she may hope for the judgment and mercy of him that made her CHAP. XII 1 The eacle which be saw is destroyed 10 The vision is interpreted 37 He is bid to write his visions 39 and to fast that he may see more 46 He doth comfort those that were grieved for his absence ANd it came to pass whiles the lion spake these words unto the eagle I saw 2 And behold the head that remained and the four wings appeared no more and the two went unto it and set themselves up to reign and their kingdom was small and full of uproar 3 And I saw and behold they appeared no more and the whole body of the eagle was burnt so that the earth was in great fear then awaked I out of the trouble and trance of my minde and from great fear and said unto my spirit 4 Lo this hast thou done unto me in that thou searchest out the ways of the Highest 5 Lo yet am I weary in my minde and very weak in
upon the wicked 12 upon Egypt 28 An horrible vision 43 Babylon and Asia are threatned BEhold speak thou in the ears of my people the words of prophesie which I will put in thy mouth saith the Lord. 2 And cause them to be written in paper for they are faithful and true 3 Fear not the imaginations against thee let not the incredulity of them trouble thee that speak against thee 4 For all the unfaithful shall die in their unfaithfulness 5 Behold saith the Lord I will bring plagues upon the world the sword famine death and destruction 6 For wickedness hath exceedingly polluted the whose earth and their hurtful works are fulfilled 7 Therefore faith the Lord 8 I will hold my tongue no more as touching their wickedness which they profanely commit neither will I suffer them in those things in which they wickedly exercise themselves behold the * Rev. 6.10 â— 19.2 innocent and râ—ghteouâ— bloâ—d cryeth unto me and the souls of the just complain continually 9 And therefore faith the Lord. I will surely avenge them and receive unto me all the innocent bloud from among them 10 Behold my people is led as a flock to the slaughter I will not suffer them now to dwell in the land of Egypt 11 But I will bring them with a mighty hand and a stretched out arm and smite Egypt with plagues as before and will destroy all the land thereof 12 Egypt shall mourn and the foundation of it shall be smitten with the plague and punishment that God shall bring upon it 13 They that till the ground shall mourn for their seeds shall fail through the blasting and hail and with a fearful constellation 14 Wo to the world and them that dwell therein 15 For the sword and their destruction draweth nigh and one people shall stand up to fight against another and swords in their hands 16 For there shall be sedition among men and invading one another they shall not regard their kings nor princes and the course of their actions shall stand in their power 17 A man shall desire to go into a city and shall not be able 18 For because of their pride the cities shall be troubled the houses shall be destroyed and men shall be afraid 19 A man shall have no pity upon his neighbour but shall destroy their houses with the sword and spoil their goods because of the lack of bread and for great tribulation 20 Behold saith God I will call together all the kings of the earth to reverence me which are from the rising of the sun from the south from the east and Libanus to turn themselves one against another and repay the things that they have done to them 21 Like as they do yet this day unto my chosen so will I do also and recompense in their bosom Thus saith the Lord God 22 My right hand shall not spare the sinners and my sword shall not cease over them that shed innocent bloud upon the earth 23 The fire is gone forth from his wrath and hath consumed the foundations of the earth and the sinners like the straw that is kindled 24 Wo to them that sin and keep not my commandments saith the Lord 25 I will not spare them go your way ye children from the power defile not my sanctuary 26 For the Lord knoweth all them that sin against him and therefore delivereth he them unto death and destruction 27 For now are the plagues come upon the whole earth and ye shall remain in them for God shall not deliver you because ye have finned against him 28 Behold an horrible vision and the appearance thereof from the east 29 Where the nations of the dragons of Arabia shall come out with many chariots and the multitude of them shall be carried as the wind upon earth that all they which hear them may fear and tremble 30 Also the Carmanians raging in wrath shall go forth as the wilde bores of the wood and with great power shall they come and joyn battel with them and shall waste a portion of the land of the Assyrians 31 And then shall the dragons have the upper hand remembring their nature and if they shall turn themselves conspiring together in great power to persecute them 32 Then these shall be troubled and keep silence through their power and shall flee 33 And from the land of the Assyrians shall the enemy besiege them and consume some of them and in their host shall be fear and dread and strife ‖ Or against among their kings 34 Behold clouds from the east and from the north unto the south and they are very horrible to look upon full of wrath and storm 35 They shall smite one upon another and they shall smite down a great multitude of stars upon the earth even their own star and bloud shall be from the sword unto the belly 36 And dung of men unto the camels ‖ Or pastern or litter hough 37 And there shall be great fearfulness and trembling upon earth and they that see the wrath shall be afraid and trembling shall come upon them 38 And then shall there come great storms from the south and from the north and another part from the west 39 And strong winds shall arise from the east and shall open it and the cloud which he raised up in wrath and the star stirred to cause fear toward the east and west wind shall be destroyed 40 The great and mighty clouds shall be lifted up full of wrath and the star that they may make all the earth afraid and them that dwell therein and they shall pour out over every high and eminent place and horrible star 41 Fire and hail and flying swords and many waters that all fields may be full and all rivers with the abundance of great waters 42 And they shall break down the cities and walls mountains and hills trees of the wood and grass of the medows and their corn 43 And they shall go stedfastly unto Babylon and ‖ Or destroy make her afraid 44 They shall come to her and besiege her the star and all wrath shall they pour out upon her then shall the dust and smoke go up unto the heaven and all they that be about her shall bewail her 45 And they that remain under her shall do service unto them that have put her in fear 46 And thou Asia that art ‖ Or like unto Babylon partaker of the hope of Babylon and art the glory of her person 47 Wo be unto thee thou wretch because thou hast made thy self like unto her and hast deckt thy daughters in wheredom that they might please and glory in thy lovers which have alway desired to commit whoredom with thee 48 Thou hast followed her that is hated in all her works and inventions therefore saith God 49 I will send plagues upon thee widowhood poverty famine sword and pestilence to waste thy houses with destruction and death 50 And the glory of

VII 1 Holofernes besiegeth Bethulia 7 and stoppeth the water from them 22 They faint and murmure against the governours 30 who promise to yeeld within five days THe next day Holofernes commanded all his army and all his people which were come to take his part that they should remove their camp against Bethulia to take afore-hand the ascents of the hill-countrey and to make war against the children of Israel 2 Then their strong men removed their camps in that day and the army of the men of war was an hundred and seventy thousand footmen and twelve thousand hors-men beside the baggage and other men that were afoot amongst them a very great multitude 3 And they camped in the valley near unto Bethulia by the fountain and they spread themselves in breadth ‖ from Dothaim Junius over Dothaim even to Belmaim and in length from Bethulia unto †Gr. bean-field Cyamon which is over against Esdraelom 4 Now the children of Israel when they saw the multitude of them were greatly troubled and said every one to his neighbour Now will these men lick up the face of the earth for neither the high mountains nor the valleys nor the hills are able to bear their weight 5 Then every man took up his weapons of war and when they had kindled fires upon their towres they remained and watched all that night 6 But in the second day Holofernes brought forth all his hors-men in the sight of the children of Israel which were in Bethulia 7 And viewed the passages up to the city and came to the fountains of their waters and took them and set garisons of men of war over them and he himself removed towards his people 8 Then came unto him all the chief of the children of Esau and all the governours of the people of Moab and the captains of the sea-coast and said 9 Let our lord now hear a word that there be not an overthrow in thine army 10 For this people of the children of Israel do not trust in their spears but in the height of the mountains wherein they dwell because it is not easie to come up to the tops of their mountains 11 Now therefore my lord fight not against them in battel-aray and there shall not so much as one man of thy people perish 12 Remain in thy camp and keep all the men of thine army and let thy servants get into their hands the fountain of water which issueth forth of the foot of the mountain 13 For all the inhabitants of Bethulia have their water thence so shall thirst kill them and they shall give up their city and we and our people shall go up to the tops of the mountains that are near and will camp upon them to watch that none go out of the city 14 So they and their wives and their children shall be consumed with famine and before the sword come against them they shall be overthrown in the streets where they dwell 15 Thus shalt thou render them an evil reward because they rebelled and met not thy person peaceably 16 And these words pleased Holofernes and all his servants and he appointed to do as they had spoken 17 So the camp of the children of Ammon departed and with them five thousand of the Assyrians and they pitched in the valley and took the waters and the fountains of the waters of the children of Israel 18 Then the children of Esau went up with the children of Ammon and camped in the hill-countrey over against Dothaim and they sent some of them toward the south and toward the east over against Ekrebel which is near unto Chusi that is upon the brook Mochmur and the rest of the army of the Assyrians camped in the plain and covered the face of the whole land and their tents and carriages were pitched to a very great multitude 19 Then the children of Israel cried unto the Lord their God because their heart failed for all their enemies had compassed them round about and there was no way to escape out from among them 20 Thus all the company of Assur remained about them both their footmen chariots and hori-men four and thirty days so that all their vessels of water failed all the inhabitants of Bethulia 21 And the ‖ Or pitâ— cisterns were emptied and they had not water to drink their fill for one day for they gave them drink by measure 22 Therefore their young children were out of heart and their women and young men fainted for thirst and fell down in the streets of the city and by the passages of the gates and there was no longer any strength in them 23 Then all the people assembled to Ozias and to the chief of the city both young men and women and children and cried with a loud voice and said before all the elders 24 God be * Exod. 5. â—â— judge between us and you for you have done us great injury in that you have not required peace of the children of Assur 25 For now we have no helper but God hath sold us into their hands that we should be thrown down before them with thirst and great destruction 26 Now therefore call them unto you and deliver the whole city for a spoil to the people of Holofernes and to all his army 27 For it is better for us

another nation without both by speaking and writing my grandfather Jesus when he had much given himself to the reading of the law and the prophets and other books of our fathers and had gotten therein good judgement was drawn on also himself to write something pertaining to learning and wisdom to the intent that those which are desirous to learn and are addâ—cted to these things might profit much more in living according to the law Wherefore let me intreat you to read it with favour and attention and to pardon us wherein we may seem to come short of some words which we have laboured to interpret For the same things uttered in Hebrew and translated into another tongue have not the same force in them and not onely these things but the law it self and the †Gr. prophesies prophets and the rest of the books have no small ‖ Or excellency difference when they are spoken in their own language For in the eight and thirtieth year coming into Egypt when Euergetes was king and continuing there some time I found a ‖ Or help of learning book of no small learning therefore I thought it most necessary for me to bestow some diligence and travel to interpret it using great watchfulness and skill in that space to bring the book to an end and set it forth for them also which in a strange countrey are willing to learn being prepared before in manners to live after the law CHAP. I. 1 All wisdom is from God 10 He giveth it to them that love him 12 The sear of God is full of many blessings 28 To fear God without hypocrisy ALl * 1 King 3.9 wisdom cometh from the Lord and is with him for ever 2 Who can number the sand of the sea and the drops of rain and the days of eternity 3 Who can finde out the height of heaven and the breadth of the earth and the deep and wisdom 4 Wisdom hath been created before all things and the understanding of prudence from everlasting 5 The word of God most High is the fountain of wisdom and her ways are everlasting commandments 6 * Rom. 11.34 To whom hath the root of wisdom been revealed or who hath known her wise counsels 7 Unto whom hath the knowledge of wisdom been made manifest and who hath understood her great experience 8 There is one wise and greatly to be feared the Lord sitting upon his throne 9 He created her and saw her and numbred her and poured her out upon all his works 10 She is with all flesh according to his gist and he hath given her to them that love him 11 The fear of the Lord is honour and glory and gladness and a crown of rejoycing 12 The fear of the Lord maketh a merry heart and giveth joy and gladness and a long life 13 Whoso feareth the Lord it shall go well with him at the last and he ‖ Or shall blessed shall finde favour in the day of his death 14 * Prov. 1.7 Ps 111.10 To fear the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and it was created with the faithful in the womb 15 She hath built an everlasting foundation with men and she shall continue * 2 Chr. 20.21 with their seed 16 To fear the Lord is fulness of wisdom and filleth men with her fruits 17 She filleth all their house with things desirable and the garners with her increase 18 The fear of the Lord is a crown of wisdom making peace and perfect health to flourish both which are the gifts of God and it enlargeth their rejoycing that love him 19 Wisdom raineth down skill and knowledge of understanding and exalteth them to honour that hold her fast 20 The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord and the branches thereof are long life 21 The fear of the Lord driveth away sins and where it is present it turneth away wrath 22 A furious man cannot ‖ Or escape punishment be justified for the sway of his fury shall be his destruction 23 A patient man will bear for a time and afterward joy shall spring up unto him 24 He will hide his words for a time and the lips of many shall declare his wisdom 25 The parables of knowledge are in the treasures of wisdom but godliness is an abomination to a sinner 26 If thou desire wisdom keep the commandments and the Lord shall give her unto thee 27 For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and instruction and faith and meekness are his delight 28 ‖ Or be not disobedient to Distrust not the fear of the Lord when thou art poor and come not unto him with a double heart 29 Be nor an hypocrite in the sight of men and take good heed what thou speakest 30 Exalt not thy fell lest thou fall and bring dishonour upon thy soul and so God discover thy secrets and cast thee down in the midst of the congregation because thou camest not in truth to the sear of the Lord but thy heart is full of deceit CHAP. Rom. 2.11 Gal. 2.5 Ephes 6.9 Coloss 3.25 1 Pet. 1.17 no respect of persons 13 He will not accept any person against a poor man but will hear the prayer of the oppressed 14 He will not despise the supplication of the fatherless nor the widow when she poureth out her complaint 15 Do not the tears run down the widows cheeks and is not her cry against him that causeth them to fall 16 He that serveth the Lord shall be accepted with favour and his prayer shall reach unto the clouds 17 The prayer of the humble pierceth the clouds and till it come nigh he will not be comforted and will not depart till the most High shall behold to judge righteously and execute judgement 18 For the Lord will not be slack neither will the Mighty be patient towards them till he have smitten in sunder the loyns of the unmerciful and repayed vengeance to the heathen till he have taken away the multitude of the ‖ Or crued oppressours proud and broken the sceptre of the unrighteous 19 Till he have rendred to every man according to his deeds and to the works of men according to their devices till he have judged the cause of his people and made them to rejoyce in his mercy 20 Mercy is †Gr. fâ—r seasonable in the time of affliction as clouds of rain in the time of drought CHAP. XXXVI 1 A prayer for the church against the enemies thereof 18 A good heart and a froward 21 Of a good wife HAve mercy upon us O Lord God of all and behold us 2 And send thy fear upon all the nations that seek not after thee 3 * Jer. 10.25 Lift up thy hand ‖ Or upon against the strange nations and let them see thy power 4 As thou wast sanctified in us before them so be thou magnified among them before us 5 And let them know thee as we have known thee that there is no God but onely thou O God 6 Shew new signs and make other strange wonders glorify thy hand and thy right arm that they may set forth thy wondrous works 7 Raise up indignation and pour out wrath take away the adversary and destroy the enemy 8 Make the time short remember the †Gr. oath covenant and let them declare thy wonderful works 9 Let him that escapeth be consumed by the rage of the fire and let them perish that oppress the people 10 Smite in sunder the heads of the rulers of the heathen that say There is none other but we 11 Gather all the tribes of Jacob together and inherit thou them as from the beginning 12 O Lord have mercy upon the people that is called by thy name and upon Israel * Exod. 4.22 whom thou hast named thy first-born 13 O be merciful unto Jerusalem thy holy city the place of thy rest 14 Fill Sion ‖ Or. that it may magnify thine oracles with thine unspeakable oracles and thy people with thy glory 15 Give testimony unto those that thou hast possessed from the beginning and raise up ‖ Or. prophesies prophets that have been in thy name 16 Reward them that wait for thee and let thy prophets be found faithful 17 O Lord hear the prayer of thy ‖ Or supplients servants according to the * Num. 6.23 blessing of Aaron over thy people that all they which dwell upon the earth may know that thou art the Lord the eternal God 18 The belly devoureth all meats yet is one meat better then another 19 * Job 34.3 As the palate tasteth divers kinds of venison so doth an heart of understanding false speeches 20 A froward heart causeth heaviness but a man of experience will recompense him 21 A woman will receive every man yet is one daughter better then another 22 The beauty of a woman cheereth the countenance and a man loveth nothing better 23 If there be kindness meekness and comfort in her tongue then is not her husband like ‖ Or common other men 24 He that getteth a wife beginneth ‖ Or to thrive a possession a help like unto himself and a pillar of rest 25 Where no hedge is there the possession is spoiled and he that hath no wife will wander up and down mourning 26 Who will trust a thief well-appointed that skippeth from city to city so who will beleeve a man that hath no house and lodgeth wheresoever the night taketh him CHAP. XXXVII 1 How to know friends and counsellours 12 The discretion and wisdom of a godly man blesseth him 27 Learn to refrain thine appetite EVery friend saith I am his friend also but there is a friend which is onely a friend in name 2 Is it not a grief unto death when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy 3 O wicked imagination whence camest thou in to cover the earth with deceit 4 There is a companion which rejoyceth in the prosperity of a friend but in the time of trouble will be against him 5 There is a companion which helpeth his friend for the belly and taketh up the buckler ‖ Or in presence of the enemy against the enemy 6 Forget not thy friend in thy minde and be not unmindful of him in thy riches 7 Every councellour extolleth counsel but there is some that councelleth for himself 8 Beware of a counsellour and know before ‖ Or what use there is of him what need he hath for he will counsel for himself lest he cast the lot upon thee 9 And say unto thee Thy way is good and afterward he stand on the other side to see what shall be fall thee 10 Consult not with one that suspecteth thee and hide thy counsel from such as envy thee 11 Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous neither with a coward in matters of war nor with a merchant concerning exchange nor with a buyer of selling nor with an envious man of thankfulness nor with an unmerciful man touching kindness nor with the slothful for any work nor with an hireling for a year of finishing work nor with an idle servant of much business hearken not unto these in any mattter of counsel 12 But be continually with a godly man whom thou knowest to keep the commandments of the Lord whose minde is according to thy minde and will sorrow with thee if thou shalt miscarry 13 And let the counsel of thine own heart stand for there is no man more faithful unto thee then it 14 For a mans minde is sometime wont to tell him more then seven watchmen that sit above in an high tower 15 And above all this pray to the most High that he will direct thy way in truth 16 Let reason go before every enterprise and counsel before every action 17 The countenance is a signe of changing of the heart 18

XXIII 1 The miserable overthrow of Tyre 17 Their unhappy return THe burden of Tyre Howl ye ships of Tarshish for it is laid waste so that there is no house no entring in from the land of Chittim it is revealed to them 2 Be †Heb. fâ—eâ—t still ye inhabitants of the isle thou whom the merchants of Zidon that pass over the sea have replenished 3 And by great waters the seed of Sihor the harvest of the river is her revenue and she is a mart of nations 4 Be thou ashamed O Zidon for the sea hath spoken even the strength of the sea saying I travail not nor bring forth children neither do I nourish up young men nor bring up virgins 5 As at the report concerning Egypt so shall they be sorely pained at the report of Tyre 6 Pass ye over to Tarshish howl ye inhabitants of the isle 7 Is this your joyous city whose antiquity is of ancient days her own feet shall carry her †Heb. from afar off afar off to sojourn 8 Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre the crowning city whose merchants are princes whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth 9 The LORD of hosts hath purposed it †Heb. to pollute to stain the pride of all glory and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth 10 Pass through thy land as a river O daughter of Tarshish there is no more †Heb. girdle strength 11 He stretched out his hand over the sea he shook the kingdoms the LORD hath given a commandment ‖ Or concerning a merchant-man against †Heb. Canaan the merchant city to destroy the ‖ Or strengths strong holds thereof 12 And he said Thou shalt no more rejoyce O thou oppressed virgin daughter of Zidon arise pass over to Chittim there also shalt thou have no rest 13 Behold the land of the Caldeans this people was not till the Assyrian founded it for them that dwell in the wilderness they set up the towers thereof they raised up the palaces thereof and he brought it to ruine 14 Howl ye ships of Tarshish for your strength is laid waste 15 And it shall come to pass in that day that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years according to the days of one king after the end of seventy years †Heb. it shall be unto Tyre as the song of an harlot shall Tyre sing as an harlot 16 Take an harp go about the city thou harlot that hast been forgotten make sweet melody sing many songs that thou mayest be remembred 17 ¶ And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years that the LORD will visit Tyre and she shall turn to her hire and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth 18 And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to the LORD it shall not be treasured nor laid up for her merchandise shall be for them that dwell before the LORD to eat sufficiently and for †Heb. old durable clothing CHAP. XXIV 1 The doleful judgements of God upon the land 13 A remnant shall joyfully praise him 16 God in his judgements shall advance his kingdom BEhold the LORD maketh the earth empty and maketh it waste and †Heb. perverseth tâ—e faâ—e thereof turneth it upside down and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof 2 And it shall be as with the people so with the ‖ Or priceâ— * Hos 4.9 priest as with the servant to with his master as with the maid so with her mistress as with the buyer so with the seller as with the lender so with the borrower as with the taker of usury so with the giver of usury to him 3 The land shall be utterly emptied and utterly spoiled for the LORD hath spoken this word 4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away the world languisheth and fadeth away †Heb. the â—â—lect of the people the haughty people of the earth do languish 5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof because they have transgressed the laws changed the ordinance broken the everlasting covenant 6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth and they that dwell therein are desolate therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned and few men left 7 The new wine mourneth the vine languisheth all the merry-hearted do sigh 8 The mirth * Jer. 7.34 and 16.9 and 25.10 Ezek. 26.13 Hos 2.11 of tabrets ceaseth the noise of them that rejoyce endeth the joy of the harp ceaseth 9 They shall not drink wine with a song strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it 10 The city of confusion is broken down every house is shut up that no man may come in 11 There is a crying for wine in the streets all joy is darkned the mirth of the land is gone 12 In the city is left desolation and the gate is smitten with destruction 13 ¶ When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree and as the gleaning-grapes when the vintage is done 14 They shall lift up their voice they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD they shall cry aloud from the sea 15 Wherefore glorifie yâ— the LORD in the ‖ Or valleys fires even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the Isles of the sea 16 ¶ From the †Heb. wing uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs even glory to the righteous but I said †Heb. Leanness to me or My secret to me My leanness my leanness wo unto me the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously yea the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously 17 * Jer. 48.43 44. Fear and the pit and the snare are upon thee O inhabitant of the earth 18 And it shall come to pass that he who fleeth from the noise
of the fear shall fall into the pit and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare for the windows from on high are open and the foundations of the earth do shake 19 The earth is utterly broken down the earth is clean dissolved the earth is moved exceedingly 20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard and shall be removed like a cottage and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it and it shall fall and not rise again 21 And it shall come to pass in that day that the LORD shall †Heb. visit upon punish the host of the high ones that are on high and the kings of the earth upon the earth 22 And they shall be gathered together †Heb. with the gathering of prisoners as prisoners are gathered in the ‖ Or dungeon pit and shall be shut up in the prison and after many days shall they be ‖ Or found wanting visited 23 Then the * Ch. 13.10 Ezek. 32.7 Joel 2.31 and 3.15 moon shall be confounded and the sun ashamed when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion and in Jerusalem and ‖ Or there shall be glory before his ancients before his ancients gloriously CHAP. XXV 1 The prophet praiseth God for his judgements 6 for his saving benefits 9 and for his victorious salvation O LORD thou art my God I will exalt thee I will praise thy name for thou hast done wonderful things thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth 2 For thou hast made of a city an heap of a defenced city a ruine a palace of strangers to be no city it shall never be built 3 Therefore shall the strong people glorifie thee the city of the terrible nations shall fear thee 4 For thou hast been a strength to the poor a strength to the needy in his distress a refuge from the storm a shadow from the heat when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall 5 Thou shalt bring down the noise of strangers as the heat in a dry place even the heat with the shadow of a cloud the branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low 6 ¶ And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things a feast of wines on the lees of fat things full of marrow of wines on the lees well refined 7 And he will †Heb. swallow up destroy in this mountain the face of the covering †Heb. covered cast over all people and the veil that is spread over all nations 8 He will * 1 Cor. 15.54 swallow up death in victory and the Lord GOD will * Rev. 7.17 and 21.4 wipe away tears from off all faces and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth for the LORD hath spoken it 9 ¶ And it shall be said in that day Lo this is our God we have waited for him and he will save us this is the LORD we have waited for him we will be glad and rejoyce in his salvation 10 For in this mountain shall the hand of the LORD rest and Moab shall be ‖ Or threshed troden down under him even as straw is ‖ Or threshed in Madmenah troden down for the dunghil 11 And he shall spread forth his hands in the midst of them as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to swim and he shall bring down their pride together with the sports of their hands 12 And the fortress of the high fort of thy walls shall he bring down lay low and bring to the ground even to the dust CHAP. XXVI 1 A song inciting to confidence in God 5 for his judgements 12 and for his favour to his people 20 An exhortation to wait on God IN that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah We have a strong câ—tâ—â— salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks 2 Open ye the gates that the righteous nation which keepeth the †Heb. truths truth may enter in 3 Thou wilt keep him in †Heb. peace peace perfect peace whose ‖ Or thought or imagination minde is stayed on thee because he trusteth in thee 4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever for in the LORD JEHOVAH is †Heb. the rock of ages everlasting strength 5 ¶ For he bringeth down them that dwell on high the lofty city he layeth it low he layeth it low even to the ground he bringeth it even to the dust 6 The foot shall tread it down even the feet of the poor and the steps of the needy 7 The way of the just is uprightness thou most upright dost weigh the path of the just 8 Yea in the way of thy judgements O LORD have we waited for thee the desire of our soul is to thy name and to the remembrance of thee 9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night yea with my spirit within me will I seek thee early for when thy judgements are in the earth the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness 10 Let favour be shewed to the wicked yet will he not learn righteousness in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly and will not behold the majesty of the LORD 11 LORD when thy hand is lifted up they will not see but they shall see and be ashamed for their envy ‖ Or towards thy people at the people yea the fire of thine enemies shall devour them 12 ¶ LORD thou wilt ordain peace for us for thou also hast wrought all our works ‖ Or for us in us 13 O LORD our God other lords besides thee have had dominion over us but by thee onely will we make mention of thy name 14 They are dead they shall not live they are deceased they shall not rise therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them and made all their memory to perish 15 Thou hast increased the nation O LORD thou hast increased the nation thou art glorified thou hadst removed it far unto all the ends of the earth 16 LORD in trouble have they visited thee they poured out a †Heb. secret speech prayer when thy chastening was upon them 17 Like as a woman with childe that draweth near the time of her delivery is in pain and crieth out in her pangs so have we been in thy sight O LORD 18 We have been with childe we have been in pain we have as it were brought forth wind we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth neither have the inhabitants of the world â—aln 19 Thy dead men shall live together with my dead body shall they arise awake and sing ye that dwell in dust for thy dew is as the dew of herbs and the earth shall cast out the dead 20 ¶ Come my people enter thou into thy chambers and shut thy doors about thee hide thy self as it were
