and_o power_n of_o it_o to_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n wherefore_o then_o if_o it_o be_v to_o the_o honour_n of_o the_o death_n and_o resurrection_n and_o life_n of_o christ_n it_o may_v be_v encouragement_n to_o thou_o to_o go_v to_o he_o for_o help_v against_o thy_o corruption_n and_o this_o remember_v when_o thou_o be_v upon_o duty_n and_o beg_v for_o help_v against_o thy_o have_v communion_n with_o christ_n to_o help_v i_o against_o my_o corruption_n oh_o act_n thy_o faith_n in_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n through_o the_o bless_a covenant_n and_o thou_o shall_v find_v abundance_n of_o strength_n against_o thy_o corruption_n and_o rest_v unto_o thy_o soul_n chap._n xliii_o contain_v the_o conclusion_n of_o the_o former_a doctrine_n of_o sanctification_n before_o but_o now_o they_o come_v to_o do_v they_o in_o another_o manner_n than_o they_o do_v before_o and_o they_o come_v to_o be_v easy_a to_o they_o over_o that_o they_o be_v before_o and_o they_o come_v to_o have_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n notwithstanding_o their_o imperfection_n in_o duty_n when_o you_o go_v to_o prayer_n indeed_o sometime_o when_o your_o heart_n be_v much_o enlarge_v in_o prayer_n and_o your_o thought_n be_v take_v up_o whole_o with_o the_o duty_n that_o you_o be_v perform_v than_o you_o think_v you_o have_v some_o comfort_n but_o when_o you_o have_v any_o wander_a thought_n and_o distraction_n in_o prayer_n than_o you_o rise_v up_o with_o a_o mighty_a trouble_a spirit_n and_o can_v have_v no_o rest_n all_o the_o day_n long_o now_o when_o you_o come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o mystery_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n though_o there_o be_v many_o imperfection_n in_o your_o duty_n yet_o than_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n notwithstanding_o all_o your_o imperfection_n but_o that_o will_v come_v to_o be_v more_o clear_o open_v when_o we_o come_v to_o that_o an_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v those_o that_o have_v burden_n of_o sin_n it_o work_v to_o purpose_n it_o labour_v then_o indeed_o the_o thought_n they_o gather_v together_o and_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v make_v a_o great_a disturbance_n and_o cause_v fear_n and_o tremble_n in_o the_o soul_n the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o be_v before_o slugish_a dull_a heavy_a and_o dead_a when_o god_n come_v to_o make_v it_o to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n than_o it_o be_v quicken_v enliven_v and_o work_v you_o that_o labour_n and_o be_v heavy_a lade_v you_o that_o feel_v the_o weight_n of_o sin_n upon_o your_o soul_n and_o know_v not_o what_o in_o the_o world_n to_o do_v come_v you_o to_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n three_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o the_o power_n of_o any_o corruption_n not_o only_o under_o the_o gild_n of_o your_o sin_n but_o under_o the_o power_n of_o corruption_n that_o feel_v your_o sin_n strong_a in_o you_o and_o you_o will_v fain_o get_v the_o mastery_n of_o they_o you_o that_o carry_v about_o with_o you_o such_o a_o weight_n as_o make_v you_o to_o cry_v out_o with_o st._n paul_n oh_o wretched_a man_n or_o woman_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n you_o that_o will_v fain_o overcome_v those_o strong_a corruption_n that_o be_v in_o you_o and_o it_o be_v the_o great_a burden_n of_o your_o soul_n that_o you_o can_v overcome_v they_o come_v to_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n from_o they_o also_o first_o you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o duty_n and_o find_v they_o toilsome_a second_o you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n and_o find_v your_o soul_n perplex_v by_o it_o three_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o the_o power_n of_o any_o corruption_n and_o can_v overcome_v it_o come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v and_o then_o the_o burden_n of_o affliction_n four_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o any_o outward_a trouble_n or_o affliction_n in_o this_o world_n all_o you_o that_o be_v in_o any_o sad_a condition_n that_o have_v any_o burden_n upon_o you_o outward_o if_o you_o come_v to_o christ_n he_o will_v ease_v you_o of_o they_o though_o perhaps_o he_o will_v not_o take_v they_o from_o you_o though_o you_o may_v be_v under_o the_o affliction_n as_o before_o yet_o you_o shall_v have_v rest_n and_o ease_v in_o they_o have_v you_o any_o burden_n of_o poverty_n have_v you_o any_o burden_n in_o your_o child_n have_v you_o any_o burden_n in_o your_o yoke_n fellow_n or_o burden_n by_o reason_n of_o weakness_n in_o body_n if_o you_o will_v have_v rest_n you_o must_v go_v for_o it_o to_o chirst_n many_o when_o they_o be_v under_o any_o outward_a affliction_n they_o go_v no_o further_o than_o the_o creature_n for_o rest_n oh_o if_o i_o have_v but_o good_a friend_n i_o shall_v be_v happy_a or_o if_o i_o have_v but_o a_o estate_n i_o shall_v be_v well_o but_o if_o thy_o poverty_n do_v work_v upon_o thy_o heart_n kind_o it_o will_v drive_v thou_o to_o chest_n and_o make_v thou_o to_o say_v true_a i_o be_o poor_a in_o this_o world_n but_o there_o be_v enough_o in_o christ_n to_o make_v i_o rich_a there_o be_v mercy_n enough_o in_o christ_n to_o make_v my_o life_n comfortable_a to_o make_v i_o who_o be_o for_o the_o present_a in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n happy_a for_o ever_o those_o that_o be_v poor_a outward_o they_o shall_v go_v to_o christ_n if_o their_o poverty_n do_v drive_v they_o to_o christ_n it_o be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o the_o lord_n do_v sanctify_v their_o poverty_n unto_o they_o now_o because_o all_o these_o burden_n if_o they_o be_v handle_v distinct_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n the_o burden_n of_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n the_o burden_n of_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o burden_n of_o outward_a affliction_n in_o this_o world_n to_o open_v these_o full_o and_o to_o show_v how_o christ_n call_v those_o that_o be_v under_o these_o to_o himself_o will_v take_v up_o much_o time_n therefore_o i_o will_v pitch_v upon_o the_o second_o at_o present_a and_o handle_v that_o more_o thorough_o and_o that_o be_v the_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v i_o will_v not_o here_o stand_v to_o open_v unto_o you_o what_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n be_v then_o i_o shall_v soon_o slip_v into_o a_o christ_n and_o make_v he_o sweat_v drop_n of_o blood_n and_o it_o be_v that_o that_o have_v be_v a_o great_a weight_n and_o burden_n upon_o many_o thousand_o of_o god_n saint_n it_o be_v that_o that_o the_o damn_a in_o hell_n lie_v under_o now_o and_o must_v do_v so_o eternal_o curse_v blaspheme_v of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o that_o make_v the_o whole_a creation_n to_o groan_v and_o travel_v in_o pain_n however_o many_o people_n think_v slight_o and_o mean_o of_o it_o yet_o when_o the_o lord_n do_v lay_v it_o upon_o any_o soul_n such_o a_o soul_n do_v find_v it_o to_o be_v a_o burden_n indeed_o chap._n iii_o the_o burden_n under_o sin_n lay_v open_a in_o nine_o particular_n 1._o when_o the_o soul_n not_o only_o apprehend_v but_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n in_o the_o reality_n of_o it_o 2._o find_v all_o the_o comfort_n that_o do_v attend_v sin_n before_o to_o vanish_v and_o come_v to_o nothing_o 3._o look_v upon_o itself_o as_o loathsome_a and_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n bow_v to_o god_n 4._o tremble_v at_o the_o least_o thought_n and_o temptation_n to_o sin_n 5._o feel_v sin_n heavy_a
evil_a report_n upon_o the_o way_n of_o god_n 5._o they_o keep_v no_o proportion_n therein_o 6._o they_o be_v keep_v off_o from_o christ_n now_o that_o which_o remain_v be_v to_o show_v you_o the_o sad_a condition_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o be_v under_o this_o legal_a performance_n that_o be_v in_o this_o condition_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o condition_n be_v very_o sad_a and_o insupportable_a to_o many_o and_o this_o text_n will_v appear_v to_o be_v a_o text_n of_o wonderful_a mercy_n if_o we_o do_v set_v out_o before_o you_o the_o sadness_n and_o grievousness_n of_o those_o that_o be_v under_o this_o burden_n the_o first_o misery_n first_o be_v not_o this_o a_o sad_a thing_n that_o that_o thing_n which_o shall_v be_v the_o chief_n joy_n of_o one_o heart_n in_o this_o world_n which_o we_o shall_v account_v our_o privilege_n happiness_n and_o the_o beginning_n of_o eternal_a life_n that_o we_o shall_v account_v that_o a_o misery_n to_o we_o as_o thus_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n to_o do_v that_o which_o god_n call_v for_o we_o shall_v account_v it_o our_o privilege_n happiness_n and_o the_o beginning_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o indeed_o it_o be_v so_o if_o we_o do_v it_o in_o the_o way_n that_o god_n require_v but_o now_o one_o that_o be_v under_o this_o burden_n do_v the_o thing_n in_o the_o mere_a outward_a act_n but_o do_v they_o as_o necessary_a evil_n account_v they_o as_o evil_a thing_n only_o he_o cannoâ—_n avoid_v they_o this_o man_n and_o woman_n condition_n be_v very_o sad_a that_o that_o which_o other_o account_v their_o happiness_n life_n and_o glory_n he_o account_v as_o his_o misery_n the_o second_o misery_n second_o there_o be_v this_o evil_a also_o in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o this_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o cause_v hard_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o if_o god_n go_v no_o further_o with_o they_o then_o this_o that_o they_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n this_o will_v occasion_v many_o hard_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o way_n and_o they_o may_v find_v that_o they_o have_v so_o many_o time_n when_o their_o heart_n be_v pinch_v with_o this_o burden_n they_o have_v many_o hard_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o hard_a thought_n of_o his_o law_n and_o hard_a thought_n of_o his_o way_n this_o be_v very_o grievous_a when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o find_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n to_o be_v grievous_a and_o so_o to_o murmur_v and_o repine_v against_o god_n as_o many_o do_v that_o be_v in_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n they_o go_v on_o in_o duty_n but_o because_o they_o get_v no_o peace_n nor_o comfort_n nor_o mastery_n over_o their_o corruption_n they_o begin_v to_o repine_v and_o murmur_v at_o god_n say_v they_o i_o have_v do_v thus_o and_o thus_o and_o i_o have_v perform_v duty_n and_o nothing_o come_v of_o they_o and_o there_o upon_o they_o begin_v to_o leave_v and_o hate_v they_o the_o three_o misery_n three_o there_o be_v this_o evil_a also_o in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o it_o cause_v a_o sink_a discouragement_n their_o heart_n do_v sink_v in_o exceed_a discouragement_n after_o a_o while_o they_o go_v on_o in_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o find_v nothing_o come_v of_o it_o and_o they_o sink_v under_o it_o in_o discouragement_n they_o think_v it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o go_v any_o further_a and_o they_o be_v desirous_a to_o cast_v it_o off_o whole_o and_o think_v it_o be_v the_o only_a way_n for_o their_o ease_n and_o rest_n hence_o follow_v that_o therefore_o there_o be_v a_o way_n open_a to_o temptation_n for_o the_o devil_n to_o come_v and_o tempt_v they_o either_o to_o looseness_n or_o to_o despair_v it_o be_v many_o time_n the_o end_n of_o such_o poor_a creature_n except_o god_n be_v please_v to_o come_v in_o and_o reveal_v christ_n unto_o they_o one_o of_o these_o two_o be_v the_o conclusion_n either_o they_o cast_v off_o the_o duty_n that_o before_o they_o make_v conscience_n of_o and_o so_o grow_v to_o be_v loose_a and_o profane_a or_o otherwise_o if_o conscience_n pursue_v they_o more_o and_o more_o they_o grow_v to_o despair_v and_o sometime_o upon_o their_o sick_a bed_n and_o death_n bed_n come_v into_o a_o rave_a and_o rage_a distemper_n as_o by_o experience_n we_o find_v that_o many_o after_o they_o have_v be_v a_o long_a time_n under_o a_o trouble_a conscience_n and_o go_v on_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o have_v grow_v very_o profane_a there_o be_v a_o time_n that_o they_o dare_v not_o neglect_v duty_n in_o their_o family_n and_o closet_n but_o they_o come_v afterward_o to_o think_v that_o this_o be_v but_o legal_a and_o now_o they_o cast_v they_o off_o and_o give_v themselves_o to_o looseness_n and_o then_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o plead_v for_o themselves_o but_o this_o that_o they_o be_v under_o legal_a performance_n and_o they_o leave_v they_o off_o and_o thus_o they_o go_v this_o way_n to_o rest_n but_o oh_o woeful_a this_o be_v to_o go_v to_o the_o devil_n for_o rest_n if_o you_o have_v come_v to_o christ_n you_o may_v have_v have_v rest_n but_o these_o give_v up_o their_o soul_n to_o the_o devil_n rest_v and_o grow_v to_o looseness_n and_o be_v notorious_o scandalous_a in_o in_o their_o life_n i_o suppose_v if_o you_o will_v observe_v it_o you_o need_v not_o go_v far_o to_o find_v example_n in_o this_o kind_n but_o other_o that_o can_v get_v the_o mastery_n of_o their_o conscience_n they_o grow_v to_o despair_v when_o they_o come_v upon_o their_o sick_a bed_n their_o heart_n be_v overwhelm_v with_o despair_n and_o so_o they_o die_v now_o oh_o what_o pity_v it_o be_v to_o loose_v such_o soul_n as_o have_v go_v thus_o far_o in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n as_o thus_o first_o they_o do_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o god_n people_n do_v for_o the_o outward_a act_n they_o do_v the_o same_o thing_n the_o saint_n do_v second_o they_o be_v very_o conscientious_a of_o what_o they_o do_v make_v conscience_n of_o their_o very_a thought_n and_o of_o their_o secret_a way_n nay_o three_o they_o know_v they_o have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n in_o every_o thing_n they_o have_v their_o heart_n so_o wrought_v upon_o that_o they_o set_v themselves_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n always_o nay_o four_o they_o have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n the_o fear_n of_o eternity_n upon_o their_o heart_n continual_o and_o yet_o perish_v at_o last_o and_o all_o for_o the_o want_n of_o knowledge_n of_o the_o gospel_n it_o be_v true_a these_o man_n say_v right_a that_o if_o their_o be_v any_o such_o who_o do_v put_v they_o upon_o duty_n and_o not_o open_a to_o they_o the_o rest_n that_o be_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o in_o christ_n if_o they_o do_v so_o they_o be_v right_o blame_v for_o put_v man_n upon_o duty_n god_n forbid_v that_o any_o that_o take_v upon_o they_o to_o preach_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n unto_o people_n shall_v rest_v here_o in_o mere_o put_v of_o man_n upon_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n for_o we_o know_v to_o be_v under_o the_o law_n and_o to_o do_v duty_n in_o a_o mere_a legal_a way_n be_v a_o most_o fearful_a burden_n but_o now_o this_o be_v our_o work_n to_o invite_v you_o to_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n that_o you_o may_v have_v rest_n if_o there_o be_v any_o that_o know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v burden_v with_o legal_a performance_n the_o main_a thing_n i_o shall_v do_v be_v to_o invite_v they_o to_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n and_o we_o shall_v i_o hope_v bring_v they_o to_o their_o rest_n see_v christ_n do_v invite_v they_o so_o gracious_o to_o come_v unto_o he_o for_o their_o rest_n the_o four_o misery_n four_o there_o be_v this_o evil_n in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o they_o who_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n do_v bring_v a_o evil_a report_n upon_o the_o way_n of_o god_n for_o they_o go_v always_o heavy_o and_o dull_o on_o in_o god_n way_n and_o so_o they_o bring_v a_o ill_a report_n upon_o the_o way_n of_o god_n whereas_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v sanctify_v and_o carry_v on_o by_o a_o divine_a principle_n such_o a_o one_o make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n beautiful_a and_o lovely_a to_o those_o that_o they_o converse_v withal_o but_o they_o that_o perform_v duty_n mere_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o go_v on_o so_o pensive_o sad_o and_o dull_o that_o there_o be_v no_o beauty_n at_o all_o in_o their_o conversation_n and_o they_o make_v other_o afraid_a of_o those_o way_n that_o be_v so_o tedious_a and_o irksome_a to_o they_o the_o five_o misery_n five_o there_o be_v this_o evil_n in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n mere_o in_o a_o legal_a manner_n they_o do_v not_o keep_v any_o proportion_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n
and_o in_o their_o duty_n but_o mere_o according_a to_o the_o stir_v of_o conscience_n if_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v &_o stir_v then_o they_o be_v careful_a to_o perform_v duty_n but_o if_o conscience_n do_v not_o stir_v they_o they_o be_v careless_a again_o &_o therefore_o those_o that_o do_v perform_v duty_n in_o this_o manner_n you_o shall_v not_o observe_v a_o evenness_n in_o their_o way_n but_o sometime_o they_o be_v very_o strict_a and_o dare_v not_o for_o their_o life_n omit_v any_o duty_n but_o at_o other_o time_n they_o be_v loose_v again_o for_o it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o beat_n of_o their_o conscience_n they_o do_v not_o work_v according_a to_o the_o new_a nature_n for_o that_o which_o work_v according_a to_o a_o new_a nature_n work_v in_o a_o even_a way_n wherein_o be_v a_o proportion_n between_o one_o duty_n and_o another_o and_o this_o may_v be_v a_o argument_n of_o trial_n whether_o that_o that_o you_o do_v be_v from_o the_o change_n of_o nature_n or_o from_o other_o principle_n if_o there_o be_v a_o proportion_n between_o one_o duty_n and_o another_o you_o be_v not_o very_o forward_o in_o something_o and_o backward_a in_o another_o that_o be_v and_o another_o down_o so_o for_o a_o man_n to_o perform_v duty_n up_o and_o down_o forward_z and_o backward_o here_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o burden_n in_o that_o way_n whereas_o those_o that_o come_v to_o perform_v duty_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o their_o way_n be_v make_v even_o for_o they_o not_o but_o that_o god_n people_n may_v sometime_o be_v better_a than_o they_o be_v at_o other_o time_n yet_o there_o be_v general_o a_o evenness_n and_o proportion_n between_o their_o action_n the_o six_o misery_n six_o there_o be_v this_o evil_n in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o if_o so_o be_v that_o by_o these_o duty_n their_o conscience_n come_v to_o be_v quiet_v than_o they_o be_v keep_v of_o from_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v no_o people_n more_o keep_v of_o from_o jesus_n christ_n than_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a manner_n and_o have_v quiet_a of_o conscience_n that_o way_n yeâ—_n not_o only_o keep_v from_o christ_n but_o further_o they_o set_v up_o their_o duty_n in_o the_o place_n of_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o to_o be_v their_o very_a justification_n what_o be_v it_o that_o many_o people_n will_v present_v before_o the_o lord_n for_o their_o righteousness_n and_o hope_n of_o heaven_n but_o performance_n of_o such_o and_o such_o duty_n that_o the_o law_n require_v now_o here_o be_v a_o mighty_a mistake_n though_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o obey_v god_n law_n yet_o for_o we_o to_o come_v and_o make_v this_o our_o righteousness_n before_o god_n and_o set_v it_o up_o before_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v our_o interest_n for_o eternal_a life_n this_o be_v to_o put_v jesus_n christ_n out_o of_o his_o office_n and_o make_v our_o own_o duty_n to_o be_v our_o savior_n this_o now_o be_v exceed_o dangerous_a and_o yet_o how_o many_o people_n be_v there_o that_o do_v thus_o and_o therefore_o i_o have_v be_v willing_a to_o be_v the_o large_a in_o this_o point_n because_o it_o be_v not_o a_o argument_n that_o we_o do_v every_o day_n meet_v withal_o and_o also_o because_o i_o will_v have_v many_o who_o conscience_n begin_v to_o be_v enlighten_v and_o much_o trouble_v to_o know_v where_o they_o be_v what_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o their_o trouble_n and_o where_o the_o bottom_n of_o their_o trouble_n lie_v there_o be_v many_o people_n that_o be_v so_o far_o to_o be_v belove_v that_o they_o be_v very_o conscientious_a of_o duty_n and_o abstain_v from_o those_o sin_n that_o other_o live_v in_o and_o perform_v duty_n that_o other_o neglect_v but_o they_o go_v on_o very_o heavy_o and_o sad_o for_o many_o year_n together_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o know_v not_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o trouble_n from_o whence_o their_o trouble_n come_v now_o by_o that_o that_o i_o have_v open_v to_o you_o in_o this_o point_n you_o may_v come_v to_o know_v whence_o all_o your_o trouble_n come_v whence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o you_o have_v go_v on_o in_o that_o sadness_n and_o heaviness_n as_o you_o have_v do_v you_o have_v do_v your_o duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n you_o have_v not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v that_o way_n how_o shall_v we_o be_v ease_v of_o this_o burden_n when_o i_o come_v to_o that_o there_o i_o shall_v show_v in_o some_o measure_n the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n from_o all_o those_o burden_n that_o i_o have_v open_v christ_n will_v not_o have_v we_o omit_v duty_n every_o a_o whit_n the_o more_o but_o in_o christ_n we_o shall_v see_v how_o they_o be_v perform_v but_o i_o have_v go_v on_o just_a in_o this_o legal_a way_n as_o have_v be_v show_v in_o this_o point_n if_o this_o be_v your_o condition_n so_o far_o be_v comfort_n to_o you_o and_o know_v that_o jesus_n christ_n call_v you_o it_o be_v true_a your_o condition_n be_v for_o the_o present_a sad_a yet_o there_o be_v help_v hope_v and_o remedy_n in_o christ_n come_v to_o he_o and_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o give_v you_o rest_v and_o teach_v you_o to_o honour_n god_n that_o shall_v be_v more_o comfort_n to_o your_o soul_n than_o this_o way_n you_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o safe_a way_n and_o a_o speedy_a way_n for_o comfort_n and_o it_o be_v as_o holy_a a_o way_n too_o therefore_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v not_o call_v to_o you_o to_o make_v less_o conscience_n of_o your_o duty_n than_o you_o do_v no_o but_o it_o be_v as_o holy_a a_o way_n and_o a_o more_o safe_a and_o speedy_a way_n than_o that_o now_o you_o be_v in_o christ_n call_v you_o quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v do_v christ_n call_v to_o these_o to_o come_v to_o he_o for_o rest_n as_o if_o he_o do_v approve_v of_o their_o condition_n and_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o ought_v to_o be_v that_o people_n ought_v to_o be_v burden_v by_o these_o legal_a performance_n answ_n there_o be_v some_o of_o the_o burden_n here_o that_o it_o be_v true_a aught_o to_o be_v and_o christ_n approve_v of_o they_o that_o be_v to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o guilt_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o corruption_n etc._n etc._n and_o christ_n call_v these_o as_o approve_v of_o they_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v good_a though_o not_o true_o good_a but_o there_o be_v other_o burden_n that_o be_v upon_o sinner_n that_o christ_n call_v to_o come_v to_o he_o to_o be_v ease_v of_o not_o as_o they_o be_v approve_v of_o by_o christ_n but_o christ_n pity_v they_o and_o have_v compassion_n upon_o those_o that_o be_v under_o those_o burden_n as_o be_v under_o a_o great_a misery_n as_o now_o when_o a_o man_n shall_v make_v conscience_n of_o his_o way_n when_o christ_n shall_v see_v a_o poor_a soul_n to_o make_v conscience_n of_o his_o way_n to_o have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o his_o eternal_a estate_n upon_o he_o to_o labour_n and_o do_v what_o he_o can_v and_o all_o this_o while_n not_o in_o the_o right_a way_n but_o think_v by_o this_o to_o make_v sadness_n you_o have_v as_o much_o cause_n to_o be_v sad_a as_o they_o the_o burden_n be_v not_o because_o they_o be_v religious_a but_o because_o they_o be_v no_o more_o religious_a not_o because_o now_o they_o do_v more_o duty_n than_o they_o do_v before_o but_o because_o they_o can_v find_v their_o heart_n come_v up_o to_o their_o duty_n as_o they_o will_v do_v not_o attribute_n their_o grief_n to_o their_o godliness_n but_o rather_o say_v to_o thyself_o thus_o if_o they_o that_o do_v so_o much_o for_o god_n be_v yet_o so_o much_o trouble_v and_o grieve_v because_o they_o do_v no_o more_o for_o god_n how_o much_o cause_n of_o trouble_n and_o grief_n have_v i_o then_o that_o do_v nothing_o at_o all_o for_o god_n the_o second_o burden_n of_o corruption_n second_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n it_o be_v a_o burden_n of_o shame_n grief_n be_v a_o burden_n and_o shame_n be_v a_o burden_n many_o that_o can_v bear_v great_a burden_n that_o can_v bear_v the_o burden_n of_o poverty_n yet_o be_v not_o able_a to_o bear_v the_o burden_n of_o disgrace_n especial_o to_o those_o that_o be_v most_o ingenious_a it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o great_a burden_n in_o the_o world_n now_o the_o saint_n they_o be_v ashamed_a of_o the_o corruption_n that_o remain_v in_o they_o they_o account_v it_o a_o shame_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o before_o his_o bless_a angel_n and_o in_o regard_n of_o themselves_o what_o they_o know_v of_o themselves_o that_o the_o world_n know_v not_o of_o they_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o ashame_n that_o they_o do_v even_o loath_a and_o abhor_v themselves_o as_o the_o scripture_n speak_v it_o may_v be_v their_o life_n be_v such_o as_o other_o do_v honour_n and_o have_v high_a thought_n of_o they_o but_o they_o be_v acquaint_v with_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o look_v into_o the_o secret_a work_n of_o their_o own_o spirit_n they_o see_v so_o much_o evil_n there_o as_o they_o see_v much_o cause_n to_o abhor_v and_o loathe_v themselves_o and_o to_o lie_v down_o in_o their_o shame_n before_o the_o lord_n who_o they_o know_v do_v see_v into_o their_o heart_n a_o great_a deal_n more_o than_o they_o can_v see_v themselves_o i_o will_v appeal_v to_o any_o one_o that_o know_v his_o own_o heart_n if_o god_n shall_v open_v your_o heart_n and_o make_v it_o know_v to_o your_o friend_n and_o acquaintance_n so_o much_o evil_a as_o be_v in_o your_o heart_n in_o the_o perform_n of_o one_o duty_n if_o all_o man_n shall_v know_v so_o much_o evil_a as_o be_v in_o your_o heart_n at_o one_o time_n in_o prayer_n or_o hear_v a_o sermon_n will_v you_o not_o be_v ashamed_a now_o god_n know_v and_o see_v all_o the_o baseness_n and_o vildness_n of_o your_o spirit_n and_o the_o godly_a know_v this_o they_o can_v but_o be_v ashamed_a and_o go_v under_o this_o burden_n of_o shame_n with_o heavy_a heart_n the_o three_o burden_n of_o corruption_n three_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o godly_a it_o carry_v with_o it_o a_o burden_n of_o fear_n fear_v you_o know_v be_v a_o great_a burden_n as_o well_o as_o grief_n and_o shame_n though_o the_o evil_n be_v not_o so_o great_a upon_o they_o yet_o if_o their_o be_v a_o evil_n apprehend_v to_o come_v upon_o they_o it_o be_v a_o great_a burden_n to_o they_o as_o those_o that_o dare_v not_o go_v out_o of_o door_n in_o the_o night_n because_o of_o fear_n or_o dare_v not_o be_v in_o the_o dark_a because_o of_o fear_n when_o they_o be_v deliver_v from_o their_o fear_n do_v they_o not_o account_v that_o it_o be_v a_o great_a but_o yet_o it_o make_v they_o walk_v heavy_o other_o fear_v sometime_o they_o fear_v man_n fear_v those_o that_o will_v come_v and_o take_v away_o their_o estate_n and_o undo_v they_o fear_v their_o enemy_n or_o fear_v the_o devil_n but_o one_o that_o be_v godly_a he_o fear_v more_o his_o own_o heart_n the_o evil_a that_o may_v come_v to_o his_o soul_n by_o that_o than_o all_o the_o hurt_n that_o our_o corrupt_a heart_n rise_v to_o it_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o have_v some_o filthy_a thing_n cast_v upon_o we_o and_o another_o thing_n to_o have_v the_o body_n so_o rot_v that_o a_o stink_a steam_n shall_v come_v from_o the_o body_n itself_o one_o may_v have_v some_o unsavoury_a thing_n cast_v upon_o he_o and_o so_o be_v unsavoury_a but_o when_o the_o body_n be_v rot_v and_o that_o cast_v upon_o one_o that_o will_v be_v more_o unsavoury_a so_o it_o be_v here_o may_v be_v the_o devil_n may_v bring_v some_o temptation_n upon_o we_o and_o make_v some_o disturbance_n in_o our_o heart_n i_o but_o there_o be_v that_o in_o our_o heart_n that_o will_v make_v as_o great_a a_o disturbance_n in_o our_o soul_n as_o the_o devil_n can_v v._o last_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o our_o nature_n be_v a_o burden_n in_o this_o respect_n that_o it_o will_v damp_n all_o the_o activity_n of_o our_o grace_n the_o livelyness_n of_o our_o grace_n now_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n make_v it_o to_o be_v the_o joy_n of_o their_o soul_n to_o be_v active_a and_o stir_v for_o god_n but_o now_o this_o corruption_n that_o we_o carry_v about_o with_o we_o damp_n all_o as_o now_o a_o candle_n if_o it_o be_v in_o a_o coal-pit_n a_o mine_n there_o will_v come_v a_o damp_n that_o will_v make_v the_o candle_n burn_v dim_a so_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o the_o best_a of_o we_o all_o be_v but_o as_o a_o candle_n in_o a_o coal-pit_n thy_o heart_n be_v like_o a_o coal-pit_n and_o god_n have_v set_v up_o a_o candle_n some_o grace_n in_o thy_o heart_n that_o shine_v there_o but_o now_o though_o christ_n take_v care_n that_o all_o the_o damp_n of_o thy_o corruption_n shall_v not_o put_v out_o thy_o candle_n yet_o god_n sometime_o dim_v this_o candle_n that_o it_o do_v not_o shine_v sometime_o take_v away_o the_o beauty_n liveliness_n and_o activity_n of_o thy_o grace_n that_o though_o thou_o have_v some_o life_n and_o burn_n yet_o thou_o burn_v but_o dim_o before_o other_o with_o who_o thou_o do_v converse_v i_o do_v not_o now_o speak_v of_o the_o stir_n of_o sin_n the_o work_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v the_o next_o thing_n that_o i_o shall_v open_v how_o that_o be_v a_o burden_n to_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n as_o for_o

they_o come_v to_o be_v more_o strengthen_v and_o then_o perhaps_o christ_n will_v have_v they_o live_v rather_o by_o faith_n than_o by_o sense_n it_o be_v in_o the_o new_a birth_n as_o in_o the_o birth_n of_o nature_n child_n when_o they_o be_v first_o bear_v they_o shoot_v up_o mighty_o take_v a_o child_n that_o come_v very_o little_a out_o of_o the_o womb_n come_v to_o it_o a_o quarter_n of_o a_o year_n after_o the_o child_n be_v shoot_v up_o a_o great_a deal_n you_o may_v see_v it_o a_o great_a deal_n tall_a and_o big_a every_o limb_n increase_v but_o take_v it_o at_o ten_o year_n old_a and_o it_o grow_v not_o so_o much_o then_o as_o at_o the_o first_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o it_o come_v out_o of_o the_o worm_n womb_n it_o can_v not_o subsist_v if_o nature_n do_v not_o hasten_v to_o strengthen_v itself_o at_o first_o so_o man_n when_o they_o come_v to_o christ_n at_o first_o they_o shoot_v up_o and_o grow_v to_o such_o enlargement_n of_o spirit_n and_o they_o do_v so_o sensible_o perceive_v yea_o and_o other_o do_v so_o sensible_o perceive_v a_o great_a growth_n at_o their_o first_o come_v than_o afterward_o because_o when_o they_o first_o come_v christ_n will_v strengthen_v they_o against_o all_o discouragement_n christ_n will_v use_v you_o tender_o christ_n will_v not_o upbraid_v you_o for_o your_o former_a sin_n and_o say_v what!_o you_o that_o have_v live_v a_o profane_a life_n a_o profaner_n of_o my_o ordinance_n a_o scorner_n at_o my_o way_n and_o at_o my_o people_n christ_n will_v not_o upbraid_v the_o soul_n but_o he_o will_v be_v threat_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o as_o thou_o have_v make_v use_n of_o thy_o faith_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n to_o get_v rest_n from_o those_o terror_n in_o the_o like_a manner_n put_v forth_o thy_o faith_n when_o thou_o hear_v the_o terror_n of_o wicked_a man_n to_o deliver_v thy_o soul_n from_o they_o let_v there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o rumour_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o thou_o may_v text_n learn_v of_o i_o for_o i_o be_o meek_a and_o lowly_a in_o heart_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n i_o will_v give_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n that_o so_o you_o may_v be_v of_o a_o meek_a and_o quiet_a disposition_n towards_o your_o brethren_n but_o of_o that_o when_o we_o come_v to_o those_o word_n that_o follow_v we_o shall_v then_o speak_v of_o the_o weakness_n and_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o go_v along_o in_o the_o artery_n that_o give_v life_n to_o the_o vein_n so_o now_o they_o that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n they_o know_v many_o duty_n that_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v i_o but_o except_o they_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o go_v along_o with_o they_o they_o have_v little_a life_n little_a activity_n to_o do_v the_o duty_n therefore_o christian_n when_o you_o hear_v any_o duty_n out_o of_o god_n word_n that_o you_o ought_v to_o perform_v consider_v here_o be_v the_o duty_n here_o be_v the_o vein_n i_o but_o where_o be_v the_o artery_n there_o be_v a_o promise_n in_o the_o word_n that_o go_v along_o with_o the_o duty_n to_o enable_v i_o to_o perform_v the_o duty_n now_o if_o i_o take_v both_o together_o i_o may_v go_v on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o ease_n and_o quiet_a and_o no_o duty_n needs_o to_o be_v troublesome_a to_o i_o the_o want_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o one_o thing_n make_v the_o life_n of_o many_o people_n to_o be_v very_o disconsolate_a and_o make_v they_o go_v on_o deadly_a and_o dull_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n whereas_o if_o they_o will_v make_v use_n of_o this_o one_o thing_n when_o they_o be_v put_v upon_o any_o duty_n to_o search_v and_o find_v out_o in_o the_o word_n the_o promise_n wherein_o god_n enable_v we_o to_o do_v the_o duty_n and_o plead_v the_o promise_n and_o say_v lord_n thou_o require_v the_o performance_n of_o this_o duty_n but_o thou_o have_v promise_v to_o enable_v i_o to_o do_v it_o i_o say_v if_o thou_o will_v do_v thus_o thou_o will_v find_v that_o thy_o duty_n will_v not_o be_v burdensome_a to_o thou_o but_o thou_o will_v say_v well_o i_o see_v my_o soul_n have_v rest_n in_o christ_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o all_o those_o service_n that_o heretofore_o have_v be_v very_o grievous_a and_o burdensome_a to_o i_o object_n i_o but_o you_o will_v say_v we_o have_v many_o promise_n in_o the_o gospel_n to_o enable_v we_o but_o the_o promise_n be_v conditional_a and_o i_o may_v forfeit_v the_o promise_n by_o not_o perform_v the_o condition_n answ_n to_o that_o i_o answer_v we_o have_v in_o the_o gospel_n absolute_a promise_n as_o well_o as_o conditional_a promise_n there_o be_v some_o promise_n that_o depend_v upon_o no_o condition_n at_o all_o but_o only_o believe_v as_o that_o promise_n where_o the_o lord_n say_v i_o will_v take_v away_o the_o heart_n of_o stone_n and_o give_v a_o heart_n of_o flesh_n what_o condition_n be_v there_o do_v god_n say_v that_o if_o you_o first_o repent_v and_o perform_v such_o and_o such_o duty_n that_o i_o require_v of_o you_o than_o i_o will_v take_v away_o your_o heart_n of_o stone_n no_o that_o be_v a_o absolute_a promise_n and_o so_o likewise_o that_o promise_n i_o will_v put_v my_o fear_n into_o your_o heart_n that_o you_o shall_v not_o depart_v from_o i_o god_n do_v not_o make_v this_o promise_n with_o condition_n you_o conditional_a promise_n and_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n the_o law_n require_v and_o do_v not_o give_v strength_n to_o enable_v to_o do_v what_o it_o
