be_v make_v sad_a because_o unregenerate_a person_n join_v with_o they_o in_o duty_n of_o homage_n and_o worship_n and_o be_v willing_a to_o join_v with_o they_o in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n as_o well_o as_o the_o sacrament_n as_o mean_n of_o a_o blessing_n why_o shall_v any_o be_v grieve_v that_o wicked_a man_n and_o sinner_n be_v object_n of_o redemption_n covenant_n and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o his_o deprive_v many_o soul_n of_o the_o benefit_n and_o spiritual_a good_a of_o so_o bless_a a_o ordinance_n but_o in_o his_o detract_n also_o from_o the_o goodness_n grace_n and_o power_n of_o god_n in_o that_o ordinance_n as_o if_o christ_n have_v appoint_v it_o in_o the_o church_n rather_o for_o the_o hurt_n then_o for_o the_o spiritual_a good_a of_o his_o visible_a subject_n they_o partake_v thereof_o conform_o according_a to_o their_o present_a capacity_n object_n but_o then_o say_v the_o doctor_n if_o it_o be_v a_o conver_a ordinance_n we_o may_v administer_v the_o sacrament_n to_o the_o heathen_a to_o convert_v they_o to_o christianity_n for_o if_o it_o will_v convert_v those_o in_o the_o church_n that_o have_v but_o the_o form_n to_o the_o power_n of_o religion_n than_o it_o will_v sure_o convert_v the_o heathen_a at_o least_o to_o the_o form_n if_o it_o will_v do_v the_o great_a much_o more_o the_o lesser_a to_o this_o i_o answer_v solution_n that_o a_o argument_n draw_v from_o the_o great_a to_o the_o lesser_a must_v be_v of_o thing_n of_o the_o same_o kind_n and_o so_o of_o man_n under_o a_o equal_a capacity_n else_o it_o will_v not_o hold_v i_o can_v throw_v a_o stone_n over_o a_o house_n can_v i_o therefore_o throw_v a_o feather_n this_o be_v less_o than_o the_o other_o and_o yet_o though_o the_o same_o arm_n and_o strength_n be_v put_v forth_o it_o will_v not_o do_v it_o the_o fallacy_n of_o the_o argument_n lie_v in_o this_o that_o there_o be_v not_o the_o same_o capacity_n of_o receive_v good_a by_o the_o sacrament_n in_o both_o the_o formal_a profess_v christian_n be_v not_o in_o such_o a_o incapacity_n of_o receive_v good_a by_o that_o ordinance_n as_o the_o heathen_a be_v we_o know_v that_o to_o heathen_n that_o never_o hear_v of_o christ_n or_o at_o least_o do_v not_o acknowledge_v he_o their_o redeem_n lord_n so_o as_o to_o come_v under_o his_o law_n no_o not_o so_o much_o as_o baptism_n the_o outward_a element_n be_v but_o mere_a civil_a thing_n and_o they_o may_v be_v easy_o persuade_v to_o take_v and_o eat_v of_o those_o element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o order_n to_o the_o good_a of_o their_o body_n but_o not_o for_o the_o good_a of_o their_o soul_n before_o they_o own_o christ_n to_o be_v their_o lord_n redeemer_n and_o saviour_n till_o than_o they_o know_v not_o what_o these_o thing_n mean_v but_o those_o among_o we_o educate_v in_o the_o true_a religion_n do_v acknowledge_v christ_n their_o redeem_n lord_n and_o they_o do_v know_v in_o some_o measure_n what_o these_o thing_n of_o god_n mean_v so_o that_o the_o sacrament_n in_o a_o ordinary_a way_n may_v work_v some_o proper_a effect_n upon_o the_o one_o but_o can_v have_v none_o upon_o the_o other_o without_o a_o miracle_n beside_o it_o be_v clear_a enough_o that_o as_o no_o uncircumcised_a person_n be_v to_o enter_v into_o the_o sanctuary_n or_o to_o eat_v of_o the_o passeover_n so_o no_o unbaptised_a person_n be_v to_o partake_v of_o the_o holy_a supper_n in_o that_o communion_n be_v there_o the_o like_a ground_n of_o deny_v the_o sacrament_n to_o the_o ignorant_a and_o scandalous_a person_n under_o church_n indulgence_n that_o there_o be_v of_o deny_v it_o to_o infidel_n this_o controversy_n have_v be_v at_o a_o end_n before_o this_o time_n it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o excommunication_n be_v appoint_v in_o the_o church_n to_o convert_v and_o reduce_v the_o obstinate_a and_o wilful_a sinner_n therein_o do_v it_o therefore_o follow_v that_o we_o may_v exercise_v to_o scripture_n precedent_n we_o have_v run_v upon_o false_a conclusion_n to_o instance_n in_o some_o 1._o because_o we_o find_v in_o scripture_n the_o distinction_n of_o believer_n and_o unbeliever_n use_v to_o distinguish_v the_o church_n from_o the_o world_n how_o common_o be_v the_o same_o use_v to_o make_v a_o distinction_n in_o the_o church_n among_o we_o who_o in_o scripture_n sense_n be_v all_o believer_n for_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o a_o unbeliever_n in_o the_o scripture_n sense_n be_v either_o a_o pagan_a infidel_n or_o a_o unbelieved_a jew_n that_o absolute_o renounce_v christ_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o false_a christ_n a_o deceiver_n a_o devil_n etc._n etc._n refuse_v to_o obey_v his_o law_n or_o to_o expect_v salvation_n by_o he_o 2._o because_o we_o find_v that_o these_o unbeliever_n be_v under_o wrath_n alien_n from_o the_o commonwealth_n of_o israel_n stranger_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o promise_n without_o hope_n and_o without_o god_n in_o the_o world_n ephes_n 2.12_o which_o be_v true_a of_o the_o ephesian_n before_o they_o receive_v the_o gospel_n that_o therefore_o the_o unregenerate_a in_o the_o church_n be_v under_o the_o same_o condition_n though_o they_o believe_v in_o a_o true_a sense_n though_o not_o sincere_o and_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n and_o person_n to_o who_o the_o adoption_n and_o the_o give_v of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o service_n of_o god_n pertain_v as_o once_o to_o the_o jew_n rom._n 9.4_o 34._o find_v warrant_n in_o the_o word_n to_o separate_v from_o the_o infidel_n and_o idolatrous_a world_n especial_o in_o matter_n of_o worship_n therefore_o they_o conclude_v we_o must_v separate_v ourselves_o from_o the_o unregenerate_a in_o the_o church_n 4._o because_o we_o find_v that_o some_o believer_n have_v by_o their_o unworthy_a and_o undecent_a behaviour_n in_o time_n of_o administration_n profane_v the_o sacrament_n to_o their_o own_o peril_n and_o judgement_n therefore_o we_o conclude_v first_o that_o those_o who_o person_n be_v unworthy_a as_o not_o be_v regenerate_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o second_o that_o some_o other_o unworthy_a action_n of_o christian_n commit_v before_o their_o come_n to_o the_o sacrament_n render_v they_o uncapable_a of_o worthy_a receive_n and_o consequent_o render_v they_o liable_a to_o judgement_n therein_o 5._o because_o we_o find_v in_o the_o scripture_n some_o excommunicate_v for_o foul_a and_o scandalous_a sin_n and_o blasphemous_a opinion_n therefore_o we_o conclude_v we_o may_v exercise_v church_n censure_n for_o any_o sin_n even_o for_o omission_n of_o such_o duty_n as_o be_v dubious_a whether_o enjoin_v in_o the_o word_n or_o no_o but_o i_o have_v do_v with_o these_o false_a conclusion_n there_o be_v one_o objection_n more_o which_o the_o doctor_n make_v against_o mr._n h._n free_a admission_n to_o which_o i_o desire_v to_o speak_v something_o the_o objection_n be_v this_o object_n that_o mr._n h._n free_a admission_n strengthen_v the_o hand_n of_o the_o wicked_a by_o promise_v they_o lie_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o make_v sad_a the_o heart_n of_o the_o righteous_a who_o god_n will_v not_o have_v make_v sad_a by_o their_o profane_v the_o ordinance_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o he_o endeavour_n to_o back_n with_o the_o language_n of_o the_o sacrament_n or_o word_n which_o the_o minister_n use_v in_o the_o deliver_n of_o the_o sacrament_n to_o particular_a person_n by_o his_o word_n and_o action_n give_v and_o tender_v christ_n and_o all_o his_o benefit_n of_o grace_n and_o glory_n to_o the_o wicked_a as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o godly_a the_o which_o grace_n and_o glory_v the_o sacrament_n be_v appoint_v to_o assure_v and_o confirm_v etc._n etc._n when_o as_o in_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o the_o minister_n therein_o not_o dispense_n the_o same_o to_o all_o alike_o but_o preach_v comfort_n to_o who_o comfort_n belong_v and_o terror_n to_o who_o
practice_n of_o the_o greek_a church_n urge_v i_o say_v what_o be_v that_o to_o we_o when_o it_o be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o first_o apostolical_a church_n of_o christ_n for_o upon_o the_o like_a ground_n on_o which_o they_o make_v four_o degree_n of_o excommunication_n they_o may_v have_v bring_v in_o ten_o and_o therefore_o not_o so_o much_o their_o practice_n as_o the_o ground_n thereof_o be_v to_o be_v regard_v in_o this_o point_n but_o then_o the_o doctor_n add_v that_o if_o this_o admit_v of_o the_o excommunicate_v to_o be_v present_a at_o all_o ordinance_n be_v a_o error_n it_o be_v out_o of_o indulgence_n and_o a_o error_n on_o the_o right_a hand_n for_o whereas_o he_o exclude_v from_o one_o ordinance_n he_o may_v exclude_v from_o all_o according_a to_o mr._n h._n tenant_n etc._n etc._n 1._o to_o this_o i_o answer_v right_a hand_n error_n be_v evil_a as_o well_o as_o leave_v and_o to_o be_v take_v heed_n of_o and_o therefore_o not_o to_o be_v plead_v for_o but_o to_o be_v reform_v 2._o suspension_n from_o the_o sacrament_n only_o be_v no_o legal_a censure_n 1._o because_o it_o have_v no_o ground_n nor_o foot_n in_o the_o word_n 2._o of_o mr._n h._n quotation_n of_o scripture_n concern_v which_o i_o say_v let_v he_o but_o allow_v mr._n h._n the_o same_o liberty_n he_o take_v himself_o in_o some_o of_o his_o own_o quotation_n and_o then_o he_o will_v have_v little_a cause_n to_o find_v fault_n for_o his_o impertinent_a allegation_n of_o scripture_n i_o have_v give_v account_n of_o some_o of_o the_o doctor_n already_o i_o shall_v here_o take_v notice_n of_o two_o or_o three_o more_o 1._o he_o urge_v many_o text_n of_o scripture_n to_o prove_v that_o some_o in_o the_o old_a testament_n be_v debar_v the_o privilege_n of_o worship_n for_o moral_a uncleanness_n but_o his_o proof_n in_o that_o fall_n short_a of_o what_o they_o be_v bring_v to_o prove_v be_v in_o case_n that_o will_v not_o serve_v his_o turn_n for_o such_o every_o man_n that_o ask_v you_o a_o reason_n of_o the_o hope_n that_o be_v in_o you_o with_o meekness_n and_o fear_n have_v a_o good_a conscience_n etc._n etc._n the_o scope_n of_o the_o place_n be_v to_o show_v what_o a_o christian_n duty_n be_v when_o they_o be_v apprehend_v and_o under_o the_o terror_n of_o persecute_v adversary_n which_o duty_n be_v to_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v affright_v from_o their_o christian_a profession_n that_o in_o such_o case_n they_o shall_v be_v always_o ready_a to_o give_v a_o reason_n of_o the_o hope_n that_o be_v in_o they_o with_o meekness_n and_o fear_n schismatical_a for_o cause_v division_n and_o separation_n in_o the_o church_n contrary_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o our_o condition_n be_v the_o more_o sad_a in_o that_o discipline_n which_o tend_v so_o much_o to_o the_o well-being_n of_o the_o church_n can_v so_o hardly_o be_v attain_v among_o we_o thus_o i_o have_v give_v you_o my_o judgement_n and_o
