to_o condemn_v they_o yet_o the_o policy_n of_o satan_n herein_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v undervalue_v they_o and_o so_o not_o answer_v our_o god_n in_o that_o just_a honour_n and_o deep_a astonishment_n as_o be_v fit_a herein_o 3_o yea_o generally_n if_o we_o will_v believe_v devil_n the_o there_o be_v noâ—â—â—y_o evil_o think_v but_o mutinee_v foist_v upon_o melancholy_n that_o so_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n quicken_v nature_n dulness_n and_o fit_v this_o drowsy_a humour_n to_o more_o heavenly_a medication_n as_o withdraw_v from_o the_o love_n and_o delight_n in_o earthly_a of_o divine_a worship_n they_o be_v full_a of_o uncertainty_n and_o wander_n full_a of_o fear_n distraction_n and_o inconstancy_n the_o effect_n of_o these_o kind_n of_o thought_n be_v at_o the_o best_a they_o interrupt_v the_o intention_n of_o the_o heart_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o so_o hinder_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o power_n thereof_o and_o deprive_v the_o conscience_n of_o much_o comfort_n of_o the_o same_o but_o if_o they_o be_v in_o any_o sort_n give_v way_n unto_o they_o may_v prove_v occasion_n of_o prophanesse_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o secret_a atheism_n and_o also_o of_o hypocrisy_n and_o carnal_a worship_n yea_o if_o they_o be_v not_o speedy_o qualify_v &_o suppress_v they_o may_v be_v occasion_n by_o it_o ckle_v the_o affection_n and_o procure_v consent_n thereto_o to_o break_v out_o into_o gross_a evil_n to_o the_o reproach_n of_o profession_n and_o wound_v of_o the_o conscience_n nay_o do_v it_o not_o fall_v out_o that_o when_o as_o these_o vain_a and_o wander_a thought_n accompany_v we_o in_o divine_a worship_n occasion_v from_o our_o want_n of_o preparation_n thereto_o and_o conscience_n thereof_o to_o make_v we_o more_o fall_v to_o plain_a formality_n and_o customaâ—inesse_n therein_o or_o else_o on_o the_o other_o side_n conceive_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n to_o be_v so_o heavenly_a and_o ourselves_o so_o carnal_a god_n and_o be_v we_o frequent_v in_o the_o meditation_n of_o heavenly_a thing_n draw_v we_o ourselves_o apart_o often_o into_o god_n presence_n to_o have_v private_a familiarity_n with_o his_o holiness_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v more_o ready_a and_o spiritual_a when_o we_o come_v to_o set_v duty_n especial_o labour_n we_o daily_o to_o renew_v our_o repentance_n daily_o for_o all_o know_a sin_n that_o so_o we_o may_v more_o bold_o appear_v before_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o worship_n and_o may_v more_o free_o and_o entire_o converse_v with_o he_o therein_o because_o sin_v unrepented_a of_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o haunt_v and_o interrupt_v we_o when_o we_o be_v about_o to_o do_v most_o good_a as_o to_o defile_v the_o same_o so_o in_o the_o wise_a mercy_n of_o god_n to_o provoke_v we_o to_o the_o clear_n of_o the_o score_n lest_o if_o we_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o our_o heart_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o hear_v our_o prayer_n psal_n 66.18_o and_o therefore_o as_o we_o be_v to_o begin_v all_o holy_a exercise_n with_o confession_n and_o deprecation_n for_o our_o sin_n especial_o such_o particular_a as_o lie_v upon_o we_o that_o so_o they_o may_v not_o fly_v in_o our_o face_n satan_n policy_n that_o while_o we_o labour_v the_o conformity_n of_o our_o outward_a man_n to_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n we_o grow_v not_o curious_a or_o superstitious_a therein_o tie_v ourselves_o to_o such_o gesture_n of_o the_o body_n which_o in_o private_a be_v indifferent_a or_o else_o more_o tamper_n upon_o the_o one_o than_o the_o other_o namely_o the_o invention_n of_o the_o mind_n lest_o this_o prove_v a_o occasion_n to_o draw_v the_o mind_n to_o the_o sense_n and_o so_o to_o offer_v up_o no_o better_a than_o a_o carnal_a worship_n and_o for_o the_o same_o just_o to_o be_v buffet_v with_o such_o like_a imagination_n and_o therefore_o as_o here_o we_o must_v be_v careful_a in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n to_o avoid_v such_o vain_a pomp_n and_o ceremony_n which_o may_v matter_n so_o in_o the_o manner_n or_o else_o we_o deface_v the_o communion_n pretend_v therein_o and_o make_v a_o jar_n in_o such_o a_o sweet_a consort_n and_o thereby_o be_v give_v up_o to_o incurable_a take_v we_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n these_o direction_n 1_o know_v we_o that_o our_o heart_n natural_o be_v full_a of_o darkness_n we_o neither_o have_v any_o light_n of_o grace_n of_o ourselves_o neither_o indeed_o know_v that_o we_o want_v it_o but_o rather_o esteem_v the_o darkness_n to_o be_v light_n our_o own_o ability_n and_o free_a will_n to_o be_v guide_n enough_o to_o happiness_n and_o therefore_o be_v it_o any_o marvel_n if_o we_o lie_v open_a to_o a_o world_n of_o error_n to_o deceive_v we_o herein_o be_v there_o any_o hope_n that_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n we_o shall_v walk_v one_o step_n to_o happiness_n be_v it_o not_o necessary_a that_o if_o we_o follow_v nature_n light_n we_o must_v run_v headlong_o to_o destruction_n and_o therefore_o first_o renounce_v we_o nature_n as_o a_o guide_n to_o grace_n and_o acknowledge_v we_o that_o all_o our_o direction_n must_v come_v else_o where_o and_o therefore_o second_o see_v the_o word_n be_v the_o true_a light_n to_o bring_v we_o to_o happiness_n as_o discover_v we_o to_o be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n and_o show_v the_o true_a way_n wherein_o we_o must_v walk_v yea_o lead_v and_o enable_v we_o to_o take_v that_o holy_a path_n renounce_v we_o our_o own_o wisdom_n and_o become_v we_o fool_n in_o embrace_v this_o foolishness_n of_o preach_v that_o so_o thereby_o we_o may_v be_v make_v wise_a to_o salvation_n 3_o srive_v as_o we_o have_v receive_v the_o knowledge_n hereof_o so_o to_o receive_v also_o the_o love_n of_o the_o same_o that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v bring_v in_o due_a time_n banish_v these_o fog_n and_o cloud_n of_o nature_n distemper_n that_o so_o we_o may_v discern_v more_o clear_o the_o power_n of_o this_o light_n &_o be_v recover_v by_o the_o same_o from_o all_o our_o misconceipt_n know_v that_o as_o it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o power_n of_o any_o melancholy_a distemper_n where_o grace_n have_v take_v root_n whole_o to_o pervert_v the_o truth_n of_o judgement_n to_o call_v light_a darkness_n so_o when_o the_o light_n be_v altogether_o measure_v by_o the_o darkness_n of_o melancholy_n and_o reject_v as_o a_o fruit_n thereuf_fw-fr it_o be_v a_o suspicion_n that_o there_o grace_n have_v not_o yet_o take_v possession_n but_o of_o this_o sufficient_o heretofore_o chap._n xii_o tentation_n concern_v good_a thought_n on_o the_o right_a hand_n tend_v to_o overrate_v the_o wurth_o of_o they_o to_o imagine_v all_o good_a thought_n and_o motion_n to_o proceed_v from_o the_o sanctlfy_a spirit_n whereas_o even_o the_o wicked_a may_v have_v some_o good_a motion_n arise_v either_o outward_o from_o some_o power_n of_o the_o word_n some_o present_a blessing_n delight_v and_o provoke_a joy_n or_o some_o grievous_a judgement_n occasion_v some_o remorse_n or_o occasion_n of_o some_o good_a company_n etc._n etc._n or_o else_o satan_n may_v cast_v in_o thought_n into_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o wicked_a to_o deceive_v they_o withal_o in_o their_o estate_n or_o else_o good_a thought_n may_v arise_v from_o within_o either_o from_o those_o remnant_n of_o nature_n in_o the_o mind_n and_o conscience_n strive_v against_o sin_n or_o move_v to_o some_o present_a good_a or_o the_o spirit_n of_o illumination_n may_v be_v a_o occasion_n hereof_o illightning_n the_o mind_n with_o divine_a knowledge_n and_o so_o move_v thereby_o to_o affect_v the_o same_o or_o the_o spirit_n restrain_v evil_a and_o so_o suppress_v wicked_a thought_n may_v be_v a_o occasion_n that_o because_o they_o be_v not_o so_o ordinary_a because_o it_o be_v better_a with_o we_o than_o it_o have_v be_v because_o we_o have_v good_a thought_n to_o disclaim_v sin_n therefore_o they_o be_v absolute_o holy_a a_o second_o tentation_n concern_v good_a thought_n be_v to_o imagine_v that_o to_o think_v well_o only_o to_o have_v good_a motion_n be_v enough_o though_o we_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o practice_n though_o they_o die_v in_o the_o conception_n and_o vanish_v utter_o a_o three_o tentation_n concern_v they_o be_v that_o when_o they_o be_v offer_v unto_o we_o unreasonable_o that_o be_v when_o we_o be_v intend_v some_o other_o holy_a duty_n though_o they_o be_v inject_v usual_o at_o this_o time_n by_o satan_n to_o distract_v we_o in_o the_o seasonable_a and_o present_a occasion_n to_o hinder_v the_o power_n &_o intention_n thereof_o yet_o to_o do_v not_o allow_v such_o as_o be_v the_o thought_n proceed_v from_o preposterous_a and_o ignorant_a zeal_n move_v to_o some_o good_a and_o glorious_a end_n as_o to_o teforme_v the_o church_n punish_v sin_n as_o phinehas_n which_o be_v not_o in_o our_o power_n neither_o belong_v to_o our_o call_n but_o to_o the_o magistrate_n a_o five_o tentation_n herein_o be_v when_o we_o only_a rest_n in_o occasion_n or_o our_o calling_n and_o so_o retain_v with_o wisdom_n to_o be_v put_v in_o execution_n for_o as_o good_a thought_n be_v tender_v to_o the_o wicked_a to_o make_v they_o inexcusable_a so_o the_o godly_a be_v furnish_v with_o good_a thought_n and_o motion_n thereby_o to_o be_v further_v in_o sanctification_n and_o as_o it_o be_v a_o property_n of_o grace_n though_o it_o be_v molest_v with_o evil_a thought_n yet_o not_o to_o let_v they_o rest_v quiet_o with_o we_o but_o to_o use_v all_o diligence_n to_o quench_v or_o convert_v they_o to_o good_a so_o it_o be_v the_o property_n of_o the_o wicked_a to_o entertain_v good_a thought_n as_o stranger_n and_o either_o to_o reject_v they_o speedy_o or_o to_o give_v they_o lodging_n for_o a_o night_n they_o

seasonable_a follow_v rather_o the_o action_n perform_v then_o entermingle_v therewith_o we_o be_v to_o suspect_v they_o especial_o if_o we_o find_v they_o to_o prove_v a_o hindrance_n to_o the_o constancy_n of_o the_o work_n as_o tickle_v the_o heart_n with_o sudden_a flash_n of_o joy_n and_o so_o puff_v up_o therewith_o and_o thereby_o cause_v slackness_n and_o let_v down_o of_o our_o affection_n therein_o now_o we_o be_v to_o disclaim_v they_o as_o tentation_n and_o that_o by_o be_v more_o humble_v for_o they_o &_o so_o search_v our_o heart_n and_o abase_v they_o before_o the_o so_o just_o confound_v we_o therein_o and_o therefore_o for_o remedy_n hereof_o as_o we_o must_v be_v faithful_a in_o the_o little_a we_o have_v receive_v so_o we_o must_v stick_v close_o to_o the_o pattern_n of_o wholesome_a doctrine_n for_o our_o further_a perfection_n as_o be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v the_o man_n of_o god_n absolute_a account_v that_o if_o a_o angel_n from_o heaven_n preach_v answer_n hereunto_o consist_v first_o in_o a_o wise_a consideration_n how_o we_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o heart_n by_o our_o thought_n namely_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o to_o approve_v only_o hereby_o our_o particular_a integrity_n in_o such_o seasonable_a action_n as_o we_o be_v employ_v in_o where_o the_o holy_a thought_n lead_v we_o into_o and_o through_o the_o same_o this_o rule_n we_o may_v further_o determine_v of_o the_o uprightness_n of_o our_o heart_n in_o our_o general_a course_n by_o our_o very_a thought_n namely_o by_o the_o entertainment_n or_o disclaim_v of_o they_o but_o still_o it_o will_v be_v reply_v that_o we_o can_v judge_v of_o ourselves_o by_o our_o thought_n because_o we_o can_v discern_v they_o 2_o therefore_o we_o must_v answer_v hereunto_o by_o a_o distinction_n of_o our_o thought_n that_o if_o we_o consider_v our_o thought_n in_o general_a of_o all_o sort_n as_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o discern_v they_o so_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a for_o this_o trial_n because_o this_o only_a belong_v unto_o god_n so_o to_o search_v the_o heart_n and_o discern_v this_o infinite_a variety_n of_o the_o thought_n thereof_o and_o our_o god_n will_v require_v no_o more_o at_o our_o hand_n then_o what_o he_o give_v namely_o so_o far_o to_o discern_v our_o heart_n as_o we_o may_v approve_v ourselves_o unto_o he_o which_o we_o shall_v do_v if_o we_o labour_v to_o keep_v a_o holy_a order_n in_o our_o thought_n that_o they_o may_v intend_v what_o we_o be_v employ_v in_o and_o endeavour_v to_o diminish_v the_o multitude_n and_o distraction_n of_o they_o by_o watch_v against_o evil_a thought_n &_o reject_v they_o and_o cherish_v the_o good_a by_o exercise_v the_o general_a calling_n with_o more_o constancy_n and_o humility_n and_o our_o civil_a calling_n with_o more_o heavenly_a mind_n do_v all_o thing_n as_o in_o god_n presence_n to_o his_o glory_n of_o which_o particular_o before_o and_o last_o if_o we_o do_v not_o wilful_o give_v way_n to_o our_o evil_a thought_n as_o if_o they_o be_v free_a or_o seek_v to_o rebel_v against_o the_o good_a reclaim_v we_o from_o evil_n but_o wise_o labour_v to_o observe_v the_o check_n of_o conscience_n snub_v for_o evil_a and_o so_o to_o prevent_v consent_n and_o act_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o conscionable_o entertain_v all_o good_a and_o holy_a motion_n by_o prayer_n and_o diligent_a actuate_a thereof_o which_o if_o we_o do_v we_o shall_v have_v comfort_n of_o sincerity_n that_o so_o far_o as_o we_o know_v we_o labour_v to_o preserve_v this_o holy_a government_n and_o what_o we_o know_v not_o shall_v not_o be_v require_v of_o us._n and_o above_o all_o herein_o be_v our_o comfort_n that_o as_o though_o we_o know_v nothing_o by_o ourselves_o yet_o therein_o we_o be_v and_o conjoin_v all_o these_o sort_n together_o both_o what_o be_v inject_v by_o satan_n and_o what_o arise_v from_o our_o own_o corruption_n it_o may_v not_o be_v deny_v but_o that_o our_o thought_n be_v general_o more_o evil_a than_o good_a more_o upon_o worldly_a then_o heavenly_a thing_n and_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o therefore_o they_o be_v unsanctified_a altogether_o see_v the_o trial_n of_o sanctification_n consist_v not_o in_o the_o multitude_n of_o our_o thought_n either_o way_n incline_v for_o so_o both_o good_a and_o evil_a thought_n be_v sinful_a but_o the_o trial_n arise_v from_o the_o diverse_a entertainment_n of_o they_o that_o though_o as_o they_o arise_v in_o our_o heart_n they_o be_v evil_a without_o consent_n and_o so_o though_o inject_v by_o satan_n yet_o can_v possible_o be_v so_o sever_v from_o corruption_n but_o by_o some_o mixture_n therewith_o they_o will_v prove_v also_o evil_a yet_o if_o we_o shall_v dislike_v of_o they_o and_o by_o prayer_n unsanctified_a so_o also_o even_o evil_a thought_n repel_v and_o resist_v may_v be_v sanctify_v because_o the_o trial_n of_o sanctification_n be_v not_o from_o the_o motion_n themselves_o or_o their_o object_n but_o from_o the_o power_n of_o the_o regenerate_v will_n either_o entertain_v the_o good_a or_o reject_v the_o evil_a &_o so_o a_o evil_a thought_n be_v subdue_v or_o rectify_v may_v prove_v good_a &_o occasion_n more_o good_a &_o a_o good_a thought_n be_v neglect_v &_o pervert_v may_v be_v evil_a and_o a_o occasion_n also_o of_o much_o more_o evil_a the_o satisfaction_n hereof_o consist_v in_o this_o consideration_n that_o as_o all_o our_o thought_n be_v natural_o evil_a so_o even_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n without_o marvelous_a preparation_n and_o watchfulness_n evil_a thought_n will_v either_o go_v along_o with_o or_o else_o begin_v our_o best_a action_n though_o we_o set_v upon_o duty_n which_o in_o themselves_o be_v good_a yet_o usual_o we_o begin_v with_o unprepared_a or_o unsanctified_a thought_n as_o not_o out_o of_o the_o intention_n of_o the_o heart_n not_o as_o in_o god_n presence_n not_o to_o his_o glory_n but_o careless_o as_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n receyve_v the_o word_n as_o the_o word_n of_o man_n pray_v as_o to_o man_n and_o carnal_o for_o vain_a glory_n and_o by_o respect_n so_o that_o indeed_o ordinary_o our_o best_a thought_n in_o god_n service_n be_v not_o only_o not_o good_a in_o these_o respect_n but_o be_v sufficient_a to_o challenge_v the_o whole_a action_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o therefore_o here_o the_o trial_n be_v not_o so_o much_o how_o we_o begin_v for_o corruption_n likely_a will_v be_v sure_a to_o share_v herein_o and_o so_o to_o serve_v itself_o rather_o then_o god_n but_o let_v we_o consider_v how_o we_o go_v on_o how_o corruption_n be_v master_v and_o grace_n prevayle_v holy_a thought_n grow_v more_o frequent_a and_o seasonable_a enlive_v the_o business_n nay_o principal_o consider_v we_o how_o we_o make_v a_o end_n rather_o be_v humble_v for_o the_o interruption_n and_o exorbitancy_n of_o our_o thought_n and_o so_o acknowledge_v ourselves_o to_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n than_o any_o whit_n stand_v upon_o the_o worth_n of_o what_o we_o have_v do_v or_o can_v do_v for_o thus_o shall_v we_o give_v god_n the_o glory_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o crown_v his_o own_o work_n and_o so_o interess_v ourselves_o in_o christ_n shall_v be_v accept_v in_o he_o above_o any_o worth_n in_o ourselves_o and_o so_o enable_v by_o he_o to_o further_a constancy_n in_o well_o do_v and_o so_o though_o we_o have_v more_o time_n give_v for_o worldly_a occasion_n and_o therefore_o may_v imagine_v that_o we_o now_o have_v ability_n to_o let_v loose_a our_o thought_n upon_o they_o yet_o see_v no_o creature_n of_o god_n be_v good_a unless_o it_o be_v sanctify_v by_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n therefore_o the_o holy_a heart_n labour_v to_o make_v all_o thing_n pure_a and_o holy_a thereto_o by_o sanctify_v the_o same_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o a_o wise_a christian_a labour_n to_o be_v a_o law_n unto_o himself_o even_o in_o his_o outward_a liberty_n use_v the_o world_n as_o if_o he_o use_v it_o not_o and_o though_o his_o mind_n may_v be_v employ_v in_o worldly_a occasion_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o set_v upon_o they_o neither_o do_v he_o begin_v they_o with_o carnal_a occasion_n but_o in_o obedience_n which_o may_v recover_v or_o a_o pervert_v of_o they_o to_o our_o deep_a plunge_v in_o this_o horrible_a pit_n of_o despair_n yet_o herein_o also_o may_v we_o raise_v up_o unto_o ourselves_o many_o evidence_n of_o our_o sincerity_n even_o by_o the_o holy_a temper_n and_o sway_v of_o our_o thought_n and_o that_o first_o by_o return_v our_o thought_n to_o what_o experience_n we_o have_v former_o have_v of_o the_o goodness_n and_o faithfulness_n of_o our_o god_n refresh_v we_o with_o sound_a peace_n of_o heart_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n whereby_o as_o we_o may_v make_v this_o collection_n that_o see_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v without_o repentance_n therefore_o he_o that_o have_v love_v we_o once_o will_v love_v we_o to_o the_o end_n joh._n 13._o so_o hereby_o may_v but_o as_o he_o have_v accept_v we_o in_o his_o son_n more_o than_o conqueror_n so_o we_o shall_v not_o think_v and_o measure_v ourselves_o by_o tentation_n but_o by_o our_o interest_n in_o christ_n evidence_n that_o though_o satan_n seek_v to_o aggravate_v our_o affliction_n and_o press_v we_o down_o therein_o by_o accuse_v we_o of_o these_o thought_n as_o if_o we_o now_o be_v utter_o past_o hope_n etc._n etc._n yet_o in_o that_o they_o be_v not_o we_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v impute_v unto_o we_o but_o rather_o provoke_v the_o lord_n by_o such_o blasphemy_n to_o be_v avenge_v of_o
