that_o they_o may_v help_v you_o against_o a_o ill_a day_n it_o may_v there_o be_v may_v be_v a_o time_n a_o come_n that_o you_o may_v be_v in_o spiritual_a desertion_n and_o that_o may_v be_v grievous_a to_o you_o but_o if_o you_o have_v keep_v the_o experience_n you_o have_v of_o god_n when_o your_o heart_n keep_v close_o to_o god_n it_o will_v much_o help_v you_o &_o sweeten_v your_o be_v rise_v up_o in_o the_o boat_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o tumble_v down_o all_o through_o their_o passionate_a carriage_n in_o the_o boat_n whereas_o those_o that_o have_v skill_n will_v sit_v still_o and_o be_v quiet_a and_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o the_o stream_n and_o that_o be_v the_o best_a way_n to_o come_v with_o the_o great_a ease_n you_o make_v the_o boatmans_n labour_n so_o much_o the_o more_o difficult_a by_o your_o unquietness_n in_o the_o boat_n so_o certain_o you_o make_v the_o work_n of_o god_n more_o difficult_a when_o your_o heart_n be_v unquiet_a let_v the_o thing_n be_v what_o it_o will_v you_o will_v say_v oh_o no_o body_n condition_n be_v so_o as_o i_o certain_o your_o unquietness_n will_v not_o help_v you_o you_o will_v not_o come_v the_o soon_o to_o your_o land_a place_n if_o people_n toss_v from_o one_o side_n of_o the_o boat_n to_o the_o other_o and_o be_v unruly_a in_o their_o carriage_n they_o will_v not_o come_v the_o soon_o to_o their_o land_a place_n the_o quiet_a they_o sit_v in_o the_o boat_n the_o soon_o they_o will_v come_v to_o land_n so_o it_o be_v in_o a_o christian_n course_n he_o must_v not_o think_v to_o come_v to_o have_v his_o desire_n satisfy_v by_o his_o froward_a carriage_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o god_n or_o man_n or_o the_o mean_n that_o they_o do_v not_o work_v as_o they_o will_v have_v they_o but_o the_o quiet_a they_o sit_v and_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o god_n the_o soon_o they_o come_v to_o their_o desire_n 12._o another_o rule_n be_v this_o communion_n with_o the_o saint_n spiritual_a christ_n require_v in_o the_o word_n mortification_n of_o thy_o lust_n and_o the_o keep_n of_o thy_o thought_n and_o of_o thy_o heart_n holy_a and_o spiritual_a he_o require_v that_o thou_o shall_v be_v somewhat_o indeed_o for_o one_o that_o have_v learn_v a_o prayer_n to_o go_v and_o say_v it_o over_o and_o read_v it_o in_o a_o book_n what_o a_o easy_a matter_n be_v that_o part_n of_o religion_n for_o a_o man_n in_o the_o morning_n and_o evening_n to_o go_v and_o turn_v over_o two_o or_o three_o leave_n and_o shake_v himself_o and_o go_v away_o and_o then_o there_o be_v religion_n for_o all_o that_o day_n but_o now_o if_o you_o will_v set_v yourselves_o to_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o prayer_n that_o be_v when_o you_o come_v to_o prayer_n to_o meditate_v what_o a_o infinite_a and_o glorious_a and_o eternal_a god_n you_o have_v to_o deal_v withal_o in_o prayer_n i_o be_o now_o come_v to_o tender_v up_o that_o high_a respect_n that_o i_o owe_v to_o the_o infinite_a god_n that_o which_o the_o creature_n owe_v to_o a_o infinite_a creator_n now_o i_o be_o come_v to_o open_v my_o soul_n to_o god_n to_o search_v out_o all_o the_o corruption_n of_o my_o get_v they_o and_o come_v in_o the_o morning_n and_o speak_v they_o and_o perhaps_o get_v into_o his_o closet_n and_o bare_o speak_v they_o over_o now_o if_o it_o be_v one_o that_o have_v true_a grace_n alas_o he_o be_v in_o a_o troublesome_a condition_n all_o the_o day_n after_o if_o he_o find_v not_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o it_o such_o a_o one_o have_v no_o quiet_a in_o his_o spirit_n all_o the_o day_n after_o why_o because_o there_o have_v not_o be_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o his_o duty_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v trouble_v all_o the_o day_n long_o but_o now_o let_v such_o a_o one_o come_v to_o prayer_n to_o purpose_n in_o the_o morning_n and_o stir_v up_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o prayer_n worship_v god_n as_o a_o god_n oh_o the_o ease_n and_o quiet_a that_o such_o a_o one_o have_v all_o the_o day_n he_o can_v go_v on_o in_o his_o work_n and_o can_v sing_v at_o his_o work_n so_o that_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n come_v from_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o a_o duty_n and_o from_o the_o spiritualness_n that_o be_v in_o a_o duty_n but_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o carnal_a heart_n come_v from_o the_o formality_n of_o a_o duty_n as_o because_o the_o duty_n be_v formal_a and_o he_o think_v that_o it_o be_v the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n and_o this_o be_v pretty_a well_o it_o be_v easy_a indeed_o to_o have_v no_o other_o yoke_n than_o this_o to_o worship_n god_n in_o a_o few_o word_n and_o not_o to_o have_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o the_o duty_n and_o so_o we_o may_v instance_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n you_o come_v to_o the_o word_n bare_o you_o rise_v out_o of_o your_o bed_n and_o come_v and_o sit_v here_o a_o hour_n that_o be_v easy_a enough_o but_o now_o if_o you_o come_v to_o the_o word_n with_o preparation_n and_o think_v now_o i_o be_o go_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n to_o hear_v what_o god_n have_v to_o say_v to_o my_o soul_n this_o morning_n oh_o my_o soul_n
perform_v holy_a duty_n and_o keep_v their_o sin_n both_o together_o and_o this_o now_o they_o find_v very_o easy_a there_o be_v nothing_o in_o holy_a duty_n that_o be_v against_o their_o sin_n yea_o there_o be_v something_o in_o holy_a duty_n that_o make_v for_o their_o sin_n i_o do_v not_o say_v holy_a duty_n in_o their_o own_o nature_n make_v for_o their_o sin_n but_o their_o perform_n of_o they_o make_v for_o their_o sin_n make_v they_o the_o more_o quiet_a in_o their_o sin_n as_o thus_o it_o make_v more_o for_o their_o sin_n and_o they_o have_v more_o quiet_a in_o they_o upon_o two_o peason_n as_o first_o by_o this_o mean_n sometime_o their_o corruption_n and_o sin_n be_v hide_v as_o you_o that_o have_v many_o servant_n that_o be_v naught_o and_o vile_a they_o will_v be_v very_o forward_o in_o good_a thing_n and_o go_v to_o sermon_n and_o prayer_n and_o the_o like_a that_o they_o may_v hide_v much_o of_o their_o sin_n that_o they_o may_v not_o be_v uspect_v to_o be_v such_o and_o such_o therefore_o they_o perform_v duty_n of_o religion_n and_o now_o these_o duty_n must_v needs_o be_v very_o easy_a to_o they_o and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o hypocrite_n that_o go_v beyond_o civil_a man_n and_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n that_o that_o they_o perform_v be_v more_o than_o civil_a man_n do_v they_o will_v not_o only_o come_v to_o church_n but_o seem_v to_o be_v affect_v not_o only_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o ordinary_a duty_n but_o in_o extraordinary_a fast_v and_o prayer_n not_o only_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n but_o repeat_v it_o in_o their_o family_n afterward_o not_o only_o pray_v here_o but_o pray_v in_o their_o family_n and_o closet_n yet_o so_o as_o to_o cover_v their_o corruption_n to_o cover_v their_o very_a filthiness_n now_o these_o duty_n be_v very_o easy_a or_o second_o which_o be_v a_o amore_fw-la close_a way_n because_o it_o satisfy_v their_o conscience_n their_o conscience_n will_v not_o be_v at_o quiet_a except_o they_o do_v something_o a_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o walk_v in_o a_o carnal_a way_n that_o have_v a_o vile_a spirit_n a_o sensual_a spirit_n in_o his_o constant_a way_n and_o course_n if_o such_o a_o one_o shall_v not_o do_v some_o good_a thing_n have_v some_o enlighten_v of_o mind_n his_o conscience_n be_v somewhat_o awaken_v and_o stir_v he_o can_v not_o be_v at_o quiet_a if_o he_o do_v not_o now_o and_o then_o pray_v and_o now_o and_o then_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o desire_v sacrament_n his_o conscience_n will_v fly_v in_o his_o face_n and_o will_v not_o be_v at_o quiet_a now_o have_v many_o secret_a corruption_n that_o he_o be_v loath_a to_o part_v with_o he_o be_v content_a to_o do_v something_o to_o take_v a_o book_n and_o read_v a_o chapter_n and_o go_v into_o his_o closet_n and_o pray_v in_o his_o family_n and_o will_v not_o neglect_v the_o word_n but_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n all_o the_o lord_n day_n come_v twice_o and_o thrice_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n now_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v very_o good_a and_o they_o be_v to_o be_v encourage_v in_o they_o but_o now_o examine_v i_o beseech_v you_o whether_o all_o the_o good_a and_o corruption_n but_o a_o ease_n to_o your_o corruption_n make_v you_o to_o go_v on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n more_o quiet_o what_o a_o horrid_a sin_n be_v this_o for_o a_o man_n &_o woman_n to_o make_v no_o other_o use_n of_o the_o ordinance_n of_o jesus_n christ_n than_o this_o to_o this_o end_n that_o he_o may_v go_v on_o more_o quiet_o in_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n now_o this_o be_v a_o and_o the_o like_a but_o now_o a_o gracious_a heart_n find_v the_o great_a ease_n when_o it_o can_v be_v constant_a in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n when_o i_o can_v bring_v my_o heart_n to_o this_o that_o proportion_n that_o there_o be_v between_o one_o thing_n and_o another_o be_v that_o that_o make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n easy_a unto_o the_o saint_n as_o in_o go_v in_o any_o way_n or_o common_a contrary_a put_v now_o a_o carnal_a heart_n to_o this_o to_o a_o constancy_n in_o any_o duty_n or_o work_n for_o god_n o_o it_o will_v cry_v out_o of_o weariness_n in_o god_n way_n perhaps_o he_o will_v be_v content_a to_o be_v a_o while_n in_o holy_a duty_n to_o hear_v a_o short_a sermon_n and_o go_v away_o again_o but_o to_o spend_v the_o whole_a sabbath_n that_o be_v wearisome_a to_o he_o nay_o perhaps_o he_o can_v be_v content_a to_o keep_v one_o sabbath_n but_o to_o keep_v sabbath_n after_o sabbath_n that_o be_v burdensome_a to_o he_o and_o perhaps_o he_o can_v be_v content_a to_o pray_v one_o morning_n in_o his_o family_n but_o to_o pray_v every_o morning_n and_o every_o night_n and_o to_o go_v on_o from_o morning_n to_o morning_n and_o from_o day_n to_o day_n and_o from_o heart_n thus_o have_v i_o this_o lowly_a heart_n christ_n will_v have_v i_o of_o a_o lowly_a heart_n thus_o if_o you_o can_v find_v these_o charge_v yourselves_o with_o the_o want_n of_o they_o and_o take_v a_o advantage_n even_o from_o the_o want_n of_o they_o to_o humble_v your_o heart_n before_o the_o lord_n because_o you_o have_v not_o these_o thing_n that_o be_v the_o genuine_a and_o natural_a working_n of_o a_o humble_a spirit_n for_o so_o they_o be_v if_o you_o can_v find_v your_o heart_n come_v off_o in_o in_o these_o particular_n in_o a_o natural_a way_n from_o a_o renew_a nature_n you_o may_v have_v abundance_n of_o comfort_n that_o this_o grace_n of_o humility_n of_o lowliness_n that_o christ_n will_v have_v you_o learn_v be_v wrought_v in_o your_o soul_n you_o have_v be_v a_o proficient_a in_o christ_n school_n but_o many_o may_v have_v cause_n upon_o the_o hear_n of_o this_o to_o charge_v themselves_o with_o this_o that_o they_o scarce_o have_v begin_v to_o be_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o a_o christian_n life_n but_o that_o that_o be_v external_a to_o perform_v some_o outward_a duty_n to_o come_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o speak_v good_a thing_n and_o pray_v and_o make_v a_o outward_a profession_n the_o life_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o easy_a but_o from_o this_o that_o you_o hear_v from_o the_o work_n of_o this_o one_o grace_n of_o humility_n you_o may_v see_v that_o the_o work_n of_o a_o christian_a lie_n much_o within_o door_n that_o christian_n shall_v be_v very_o busy_a within_o their_o heart_n there_o be_v many_o working_n within_o rather_o then_o without_o and_o therefore_o if_o you_o will_v profess_v yourselves_o to_o be_v christian_n and_o will_v indeed_o have_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o the_o safety_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o eternal_a life_n be_v in_o another_o way_n and_o all_o that_o which_o we_o do_v be_v rather_o in_o way_n of_o thankfulness_n unto_o god_n for_o the_o mercy_n you_o the_o often_o renew_v of_o repentance_n will_v make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n easy_a 6._o labour_n by_o wisdom_n to_o order_v the_o duty_n of_o your_o condition_n that_o be_v thus_o labour_n for_o wisdom_n to_o know_v what_o be_v suitable_a to_o your_o condition_n and_o order_v the_o duty_n about_o that_o condition_n many_o think_v oh_o if_o i_o be_v in_o such_o a_o place_n as_o such_o now_o but_o to_o think_v of_o what_o you_o have_v hear_v heretofore_o the_o duty_n of_o your_o condition_n now_o be_v not_o to_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n in_o your_o closet_n in_o prayer_n as_o when_o you_o be_v in_o health_n and_o you_o be_v trouble_v for_o the_o want_n of_o this_o we_o often_o trouble_v ourselves_o about_o those_o duty_n that_o be_v not_o the_o duty_n of_o our_o present_a
