bring_v any_o peace_n to_o his_o conscience_n if_o he_o rest_v upon_o the_o bare_a performance_n of_o they_o i_o speak_v of_o a_o break_a heart_a sinner_n for_o the_o conscience_n be_v now_o eagle_n eye_v it_o be_v full_a of_o film_n and_o scale_n before_o but_o now_o it_o be_v open_a and_o eagle_n eye_v and_o can_v spy_v all_o his_o weakness_n and_o pick_v matter_n of_o disquiet_n even_o in_o the_o best_a of_o all_o his_o duty_n that_o be_v do_v the_o soul_n think_v they_o very_o good_a payment_n yet_o now_o the_o heart_n be_v touch_v and_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v and_o tell_v he_o of_o his_o barrenness_n and_o deadness_n and_o rove_a thought_n when_o he_o do_v pray_v and_o how_o insufficient_a he_o be_v to_o pray_v and_o therefore_o he_o dare_v not_o pray_v with_o his_o family_n and_o conscience_n say_v to_o he_o you_o have_v former_o contemn_v prayer_n and_o now_o you_o can_v pray_v and_o when_o the_o soul_n come_v into_o the_o congregation_n there_o conscience_n note_v he_o and_o when_o he_o go_v home_o conscience_n say_v thus_o unto_o he_o how_o dead_a be_v you_o and_o how_o unreverent_o do_v you_o attend_v to_o the_o word_n and_o how_o unwilling_a be_v your_o heart_n raise_v he_o up_o again_o but_o he_o will_v not_o put_v the_o stock_n into_o his_o own_o hand_n again_o but_o he_o put_v it_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n as_o a_o man_n that_o give_v his_o child_n a_o portion_n and_o he_o spend_v it_o all_o now_o his_o father_n will_v raise_v he_o again_o but_o will_v not_o put_v it_o into_o his_o own_o hand_n but_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o some_o friend_n and_o will_v have_v his_o son_n go_v to_o that_o man_n for_o his_o allowance_n every_o day_n and_o for_o every_o meal_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o lord_n our_o heavenly_a father_n because_o themselves_o and_o that_o our_o soul_n may_v be_v able_a to_o say_v it_o be_v true_a these_o be_v the_o holy_a ordinance_n of_o god_n but_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o expect_v any_o salvation_n or_o justification_n from_o they_o alone_o i_o say_v the_o mean_n be_v main_o four_o and_o i_o will_v handle_v they_o something_o large_o because_o if_o i_o be_v not_o deceive_v here_o be_v the_o main_a wretched_a heart_n now_o brethren_n think_v of_o all_o these_o and_o search_v serious_o it_o be_v better_a to_o know_v this_o now_o then_o to_o know_v it_o when_o there_o be_v no_o remedy_n i_o say_v no_o more_o for_o pity_n be_v it_o so_o with_o thou_o and_o i_o and_o all_o of_o we_o by_o nature_n then_o judge_v the_o case_n clear_o and_o pass_v the_o verdict_n do_v thou_o think_v that_o a_o few_o faint_a cold_a prayer_n and_o lazy_a wish_n and_o a_o little_a horror_n of_o heart_n can_v pluck_v a_o dead_a man_n from_o the_o grave_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o a_o damn_a soul_n from_o the_o pit_n of_o hell_n and_o change_v the_o nature_n of_o a_o devil_n to_o be_v a_o saint_n no_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a and_o know_v that_o the_o work_n of_o renovation_n be_v great_a than_o the_o work_n of_o thy_o creation_n and_o there_o be_v no_o help_n in_o earth_n either_o go_v to_o christ_n or_o there_o be_v no_o succour_n for_o thou_o we_o can_v pity_v poor_a drunkard_n and_o sorrow_n for_o they_o but_o we_o be_v as_o able_a to_o make_v world_n and_o to_o pull_v hell_n in_o piece_n as_o to_o pull_v a_o poor_a soul_n from_o the_o paw_n of_o the_o devil_n nay_o he_o be_v a_o devil_n and_o a_o damn_a devil_n as_o you_o have_v hear_v if_o this_o be_v well_o consider_v it_o will_v dash_v in_o piece_n all_o those_o carnal_a conceit_n of_o a_o great_a many_o which_o make_v nothing_o of_o turn_v a_o devil_n to_o be_v a_o saint_n second_o consider_v serious_o the_o infirmity_n mean_n the_o second_o mean_n and_o feebleness_n and_o the_o emptiness_n of_o all_o mean_n that_o we_o enjoy_v and_o all_o duty_n that_o we_o do_v it_o be_v argument_n enough_o to_o persuade_v a_o poor_a brokenhearted_a sinner_n not_o to_o rely_v upon_o a_o poor_a break_a reed_n that_o will_v deceive_v he_o when_o he_o have_v most_o need_n therefore_o since_o they_o can_v succour_v we_o let_v we_o draw_v our_o heart_n from_o rest_v on_o they_o this_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a weight_n also_o for_o the_o soul_n be_v thus_o break_v for_o sin_n set_v a_o great_a matter_n of_o excellency_n and_o sufficiency_n in_o holy_a duty_n nay_o people_n hang_v all_o their_o hope_n of_o eternal_a life_n the_o flesh_n so_o that_o these_o two_o be_v contrary_a the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o there_o be_v so_o much_o corruption_n in_o thou_o so_o that_o when_o thou_o will_v do_v good_a thou_o can_v not_o do_v it_o with_o that_o readiness_n that_o thou_o ought_v thou_o can_v not_o do_v it_o with_o all_o the_o whole_a stream_n of_o thy_o heart_n the_o law_n require_v that_o we_o shall_v love_v the_o lord_n with_o all_o our_o heart_n and_o with_o all_o our_o strength_n so_o that_o we_o have_v no_o hang_n back_o in_o our_o duty_n but_o in_o all_o our_o prayer_n and_o hear_n and_o reading_n there_o be_v flesh_n that_o oppose_v the_o spirit_n and_o corruption_n that_o cross_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n so_o that_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o perform_v any_o service_n as_o god_n do_v require_v of_o we_o how_o backward_o be_v we_o to_o duty_n and_o how_o weary_a in_o duty_n what_o wander_a thought_n what_o privy_a pride_n and_o what_o seek_v of_o ourselves_o have_v we_o in_o they_o you_o know_v nothing_o if_o you_o know_v not_o this_o but_o whether_o you_o know_v it_o or_o no_o it_o be_v so_o there_o be_v much_o corruption_n oppose_v and_o thwart_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o you_o have_v need_n pray_v for_o the_o repentance_n of_o your_o repentance_n and_o to_o beg_v the_o pardon_n of_o all_o your_o prayer_n and_o whereas_o you_o think_v that_o you_o will_v repent_v and_o amend_v and_o hear_v and_o pray_v and_o the_o like_a i_o tell_v you_o that_o though_o it_o be_v commendable_a to_o pray_v and_o hear_v yet_o there_o be_v so_o much_o sin_n in_o your_o amendment_n and_o repentance_n and_o duty_n that_o in_o exact_a justice_n god_n may_v curse_v all_o that_o you_o do_v and_o execute_v his_o judgement_n upon_o you_o for_o the_o same_o therefore_o these_o can_v save_v you_o he_o that_o heretofore_o have_v profane_v the_o will_n now_o sanctify_v it_o and_o so_o he_o think_v all_o be_v quit_v but_o i_o tell_v thou_o that_o in_o all_o thy_o sanctification_n of_o the_o same_o thou_o have_v need_n of_o a_o saviour_n four_o be_v it_o grant_v and_o let_v it_o be_v suppose_v which_o i_o confess_v will_v not_o nay_o can_v never_o be_v but_o imagine_v it_o be_v so_o that_o after_o god_n have_v open_v a_o man_n eye_n and_o break_a his_o heart_n he_o shall_v never_o commit_v the_o least_o sin_n in_o all_o the_o world_n and_o never_o have_v any_o fail_n in_o holy_a duty_n nor_o any_o distemper_n in_o his_o soul_n though_o this_o can_v be_v but_o imagine_v it_o be_v so_o that_o he_o do_v never_o sin_n after_o his_o repentance_n yet_o even_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o nature_n which_o he_o bring_v into_o the_o world_n with_o he_o be_v enough_o to_o make_v the_o lord_n take_v the_o advantage_n of_o he_o for_o ever_o and_o to_o cast_v away_o all_o that_o ever_o he_o do_v as_o abominable_a from_o his_o presence_n our_o repentance_n and_o our_o exact_a performance_n of_o duty_n though_o we_o can_v do_v they_o even_o to_o the_o uttermost_a it_o be_v a_o duty_n that_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v and_o the_o do_v of_o that_o which_o we_o owe_v can_v never_o satisfy_v for_o that_o which_o have_v be_v do_v amiss_o by_o we_o but_o our_o repentance_n of_o sin_n and_o our_o reformation_n be_v a_o duty_n which_o the_o gospel_n require_v and_o therefore_o will_v not_o satisfy_v for_o that_o which_o be_v do_v amiss_o before_o our_o conversion_n as_o a_o tenant_n that_o be_v run_v behind_o hand_n with_o his_o landlord_n so_o many_o hundreth_n and_o at_o last_o he_o begin_v to_o consider_v with_o himself_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o he_o bring_v the_o rent_n of_o the_o last_o half_a year_n when_o his_o lease_n be_v out_o will_v this_o man_n think_v that_o he_o have_v now_o satisfy_v his_o landlord_n if_o he_o shall_v say_v now_o landlord_n i_o hope_v you_o be_v content_v and_o all_o be_v answer_v and_o have_v full_o pay_v all_o that_o be_v between_o you_o and_o i_o you_o landlord_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o reply_v thus_o and_o say_v this_o satisfy_v i_o for_o the_o last_o half_a year_n past_a but_o who_o pay_v for_o the_o odd_a hundreth_n so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o poor_a soul_n be_v it_o so_o that_o after_o those_o arrearage_n that_o thou_o have_v run_v upon_o the_o score_n with_o god_n after_o
beyond_o all_o that_o you_o can_v do_v and_o labour_n so_o to_o approve_v your_o heart_n to_o god_n that_o you_o may_v see_v great_a mercy_n in_o god_n then_o in_o all_o that_o you_o can_v do_v now_o there_o be_v two_o cavil_n which_o carnal_a person_n slander_v this_o truth_n of_o god_n withal_o and_o these_o must_v be_v answer_v before_o i_o can_v come_v to_o the_o trial_n cavil_v the_o first_o cavil_v the_o first_o cavil_n with_o which_o wretch_n be_v content_a upon_o this_o truth_n it_o be_v this_o oh_o say_v they_o what_o be_v it_o so_o that_o all_o our_o prayer_n and_o hear_n all_o our_o care_n and_o desire_n and_o all_o our_o improvement_n of_o mean_n be_v nothing_o worth_a will_v not_o all_o these_o justify_v we_o nor_o make_v we_o acceptable_a to_o god_n then_o let_v we_o cast_v shall_v be_v indict_v for_o a_o drunkard_n and_o a_o scorner_n and_o a_o profane_a person_n and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o haste_v toss_v the_o people_n of_o god_n with_o scorn_n upon_o thy_o alebench_n you_o it_o be_v that_o which_o we_o want_v and_o it_o be_v all_o that_o we_o desire_v in_o this_o world_n come_v then_o say_v prayer_n and_o the_o word_n we_o will_v go_v to_o christ_n with_o you_o humiliation_n for_o as_o i_o conceive_v all_o the_o difficulty_n of_o a_o man_n course_n lie_v here_o and_o the_o cause_n why_o a_o man_n receive_v not_o the_o assurance_n of_o mercy_n from_o god_n that_o he_o desire_v or_o that_o comfort_n that_o he_o may_v it_o be_v all_o from_o hence_o i_o say_v because_o he_o be_v not_o empty_a for_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v prepare_v christ_n come_v take_v a_o mighty_a castle_n though_o it_o be_v batter_v down_o yet_o there_o remain_v many_o heap_n of_o rubbish_n and_o happy_o some_o of_o the_o pillar_n stand_v many_o winter_n after_o so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o frame_n of_o spirit_n in_o a_o high_a imagination_n 10.5_o 2_o cor._n 10.5_o in_o these_o tower_n of_o loftiness_n though_o this_o dagon_n of_o a_o man_n self_n be_v fall_v down_o yet_o still_o the_o stump_n remain_v and_o will_v do_v many_o year_n and_o it_o will_v cost_v much_o horror_n of_o heart_n and_o much_o trouble_n before_o this_o haughtiness_n of_o heart_n will_v be_v every_o way_n pull_v down_o and_o make_v agreeable_a to_o the_o good_a will_n of_o god_n though_o this_o distemper_n be_v marvelous_a secret_n yet_o a_o man_n may_v take_v a_o measure_n and_o scantling_n of_o it_o trial_n how_o to_o try_v the_o measure_n of_o humiliation_n the_o first_o particular_a trial_n and_o he_o may_v know_v how_o much_o of_o this_o curse_a rubbish_n remain_v in_o his_o heart_n by_o these_o four_o particular_a rule_n first_o look_v what_o measure_n there_o be_v of_o carnal_a reason_n against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n when_o it_o be_v make_v know_v what_o measure_n there_o be_v of_o it_o either_o subtle_o come_v in_o upon_o the_o heart_n or_o else_o that_o do_v violent_o transport_v the_o spirit_n against_o the_o spirit_n so_o much_o need_v thou_o have_v of_o humiliation_n and_o so_o much_o thou_o want_v of_o it_o this_o be_v a_o clear_a case_n every_o saint_n of_o god_n be_v willing_a to_o know_v the_o truth_n that_o he_o shall_v doubt_v of_o and_o be_v content_a to_o yield_v himself_o to_o the_o truth_n that_o shall_v be_v reveal_v and_o of_o which_o he_o shall_v be_v convince_v yet_o there_o remain_v much_o carnal_a reason_n against_o the_o truth_n as_o the_o apostle_n say_v let_v no_o man_n deceive_v you_o intrude_a into_o those_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v not_o see_v 2.18_o coloss_n 2.18_o vain_o puff_v up_o in_o his_o fleshly_a mind_n the_o ground_n and_o root_n of_o this_o carnal_a reason_n or_o the_o measure_n of_o it_o may_v appear_v in_o two_o cause_n first_o there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o perverse_a darkness_n in_o the_o heart_n still_o stick_v in_o the_o mind_n and_o understanding_n even_o of_o a_o gracious_a godly_a man_n and_o from_o hence_o namely_o out_o of_o this_o mistake_n of_o the_o mind_n follow_v all_o that_o carnal_a reason_n that_o howsoever_o the_o soul_n be_v satisfy_v yet_o it_o will_v not_o sit_v down_o but_o still_o it_o stick_v in_o this_o carnal_a reason_n and_o the_o sinner_n can_v conceive_v the_o truth_n nor_o fathom_v the_o compass_n of_o it_o by_o reason_n of_o his_o own_o weakness_n therefore_o it_o be_v long_o before_o he_o will_v be_v persuade_v that_o it_o be_v truth_n and_o that_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o yield_v to_o it_o when_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o truth_n be_v so_o plain_a and_o evident_a that_o he_o can_v resist_v the_o clearness_n of_o it_o yet_o because_o he_o can_v conceive_v of_o it_o he_o think_v that_o he_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o yield_v thereunto_o object_n but_o some_o will_v say_v shall_v a_o man_n yield_v to_o that_o which_o he_o can_v conceive_v answ_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v when_o the_o mind_n be_v so_o far_o enlighten_v that_o he_o can_v gainsay_v any_o thing_n in_o reason_n though_o he_o can_v compass_v the_o depth_n and_o bottom_n of_o the_o truth_n yet_o he_o shall_v yield_v to_o it_o and_o rather_o go_v with_o reason_n then_o follow_v his_o own_o imagination_n when_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n for_o it_o just_o so_o it_o be_v with_o nicodemus_n when_o christ_n speak_v of_o the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n 3.9_o joh._n 3.9_o he_o say_v can_v a_o man_n be_v bear_v
abreast_n against_o their_o own_o comfort_n and_o will_v not_o receive_v the_o word_n that_o may_v convey_v what_o comfort_n be_v needful_a for_o they_o i_o charge_v every_o poor_a soul_n to_o make_v conscience_n of_o resist_v the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o you_o desire_v to_o make_v conscience_n of_o lie_v and_o steal_v this_o be_v a_o sin_n though_o not_o so_o great_a as_o the_o other_o make_v conscience_n of_o this_o carnal_a cavil_v pull_v down_o those_o proud_a heart_n lay_v down_o all_o those_o carnal_a reason_n and_o let_v the_o word_n of_o god_n rule_v you_o &_o then_o comfort_n will_v come_v amain_o i_o take_v this_o for_o a_o truth_n that_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v true_o humble_v and_o prepare_v for_o mercy_n and_o right_o inform_v and_o convict_v of_o the_o way_n to_o salvation_n the_o cause_n why_o the_o heart_n can_v receive_v comfort_n it_o be_v mere_a pride_n of_o a_o man_n spirit_n one_o way_n or_o other_o it_o be_v not_o because_o he_o will_v not_o nor_o because_o god_n will_v not_o but_o because_o he_o listen_v to_o what_o his_o carnal_a reason_n say_v and_o not_o to_o the_o plain_a will_n and_o word_n of_o god_n i_o say_v make_v conscience_n of_o it_o and_o then_o comfort_n will_v come_v amain_o into_o your_o soul_n humiliation_n the_o second_o trial_n of_o the_o degree_n of_o humiliation_n the_o second_o trial_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o humiliation_n be_v this_o look_v to_o thy_o discouragement_n for_o as_o the_o discouragement_n of_o thy_o course_n be_v so_o be_v the_o pride_n of_o thy_o heart_n if_o the_o stream_n run_v amain_o here_o there_o be_v much_o pride_n if_o little_a discouragement_n than_o there_o be_v little_a pride_n this_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o when_o the_o soul_n out_o of_o the_o fear_n of_o evil_n that_o it_o either_o feel_v or_o expect_v and_o the_o price_n that_o it_o put_v upon_o itself_o and_o that_o it_o look_v for_o from_o itself_o it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o sink_n of_o the_o soul_n below_o itself_o as_o the_o author_n to_o the_o hebrew_n say_v consider_v he_o that_o endure_v such_o contradiction_n of_o sinner_n against_o himself_o 12.3_o heb._n 12.3_o lest_o you_o give_v it_o it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o discourage_v the_o heart_n be_v content_a to_o have_v good_a but_o if_o god_n take_v away_o this_o good_a he_o be_v not_o content_a to_o be_v at_o god_n dispose_n therein_o but_o if_o this_o good_a go_v away_o he_o sink_v and_o be_v discourage_v and_o this_o argue_v pride_n the_o heart_n desire_v to_o have_v riches_n and_o especial_o honour_v in_o the_o world_n happy_o god_n deny_v this_o &_o throw_v filth_n and_o disgrace_n upon_o his_o person_n and_o now_o the_o soul_n be_v desperate_o down_o and_o forlorn_a in_o himself_o so_o much_o as_o thou_o have_v of_o this_o so_o much_o pride_n thou_o have_v why_o be_v thou_o not_o content_a that_o god_n take_v away_o any_o thing_n the_o truth_n be_v thou_o will_v be_v at_o thy_o own_o dispose_n and_o that_o which_o thou_o will_v have_v thou_o be_v not_o able_a to_o want_v now_o because_o this_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o we_o must_v take_v special_a notice_n of_o know_v therefore_o that_o this_o discouragement_n appear_v in_o these_o several_a passage_n and_o pride_n vent_v itself_o in_o they_o all_o first_o this_o keep_v a_o man_n from_o come_v to_o the_o work_n when_o he_o be_v call_v to_o it_o heart_n sign_n of_o a_o discourage_v heart_n though_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v never_o so_o plain_a and_o his_o call_n to_o it_o never_o so_o clear_a yet_o he_o be_v loath_a to_o come_v in_o at_o god_n call_v and_o when_o he_o be_v come_v he_o be_v quick_o weary_a and_o say_v what_o do_v i_o hear_v ask_v god_n that_o because_o he_o think_v he_o shall_v not_o find_v the_o after_o the_o work_n when_o the_o work_n be_v do_v by_o other_o if_o they_o find_v acceptance_n and_o have_v good_a success_n this_o come_v like_o cold_a water_n upon_o the_o soul_n and_o then_o he_o go_v away_o and_o say_v oh_o he_o be_v fit_a for_o nothing_o and_o he_o be_v unable_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n as_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v say_v he_o have_v no_o light_n because_o another_o man_n candle_n burn_v clear_a than_o he_o but_o after_o his_o own_o work_n all_o his_o care_n be_v what_o will_v become_v of_o the_o business_n and_o how_o his_o labour_n and_o how_o his_o sermon_n take_v what_o approvement_n of_o his_o gift_n and_o what_o admiration_n of_o his_o part_n and_o if_o the_o acceptation_n of_o other_o answer_v not_o his_o desire_n than_o his_o soul_n sink_v down_o and_o he_o be_v even_o weary_a of_o himself_o his_o work_n and_o all_o if_o no_o man_n commend_v he_o and_o the_o work_n be_v not_o approve_v than_o he_o complain_v of_o himself_o this_o way_n and_o that_o way_n and_o begin_v to_o disparage_v himself_o only_o to_o fish_v out_o commendation_n from_o other_o and_o to_o see_v what_o they_o will_v say_v if_o they_o commend_v he_o than_o he_o go_v away_o rejoice_v if_o not_o than_o he_o sink_v special_o if_o he_o have_v not_o grace_v to_o go_v in_o secret_a by_o prayer_n to_o quicken_v up_o himself_o with_o some_o promise_n after_o that_o drunken_a fit_n so_o the_o truth_n be_v plain_a it_o be_v wonderful_a to_o see_v what_o pride_n there_o be_v one_o man_n be_v sick_a of_o the_o sullen_a because_o the_o breath_n of_o man_n depart_v and_o he_o fall_v short_a of_o that_o which_o he_o expect_v though_o i_o shall_v prepare_v myself_o never_o so_o well_o yet_o if_o the_o lord_n do_v stop_v my_o mouth_n now_o in_o the_o pulpit_n let_v i_o be_v the_o difference_n appear_v in_o two_o thing_n the_o soul_n think_v he_o do_v marvellous_a well_o to_o be_v thus_o discourage_v and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o humiliation_n but_o this_o know_v therefore_o this_o double_a difference_n first_o discourage_v the_o difference_n between_o a_o heart_n humble_v and_o a_o heart_n discourage_v this_o humiliation_n leave_v the_o soul_n more_o calm_a and_o better_a able_a to_o undergo_a a_o light_n blow_v when_o it_o have_v bear_v this_o whereas_o after_o discouragement_n the_o soul_n be_v more_o full_a of_o trouble_n and_o more_o unable_a to_o bear_v any_o trouble_n because_o it_o have_v sink_v under_o this_o if_o the_o lord_n deny_v to_o the_o humble_a soul_n that_o which_o he_o will_v have_v it_o make_v he_o more_o able_a to_o bear_v take_v the_o blow_n quiet_o but_o the_o discourage_v soul_n faint_v and_o be_v not_o able_a to_o bear_v the_o hand_n of_o god_n in_o this_o kind_n difference_n the_o second_o difference_n second_o the_o second_o difference_n be_v this_o as_o humiliation_n ever_o leave_v the_o soul_n calm_a and_o quiet_a after_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n have_v be_v upon_o it_o so_o it_o make_v the_o soul_n more_o duty_n and_o the_o success_n of_o they_o see_v it_o have_v find_v god_n go_v out_o with_o he_o heretofore_o and_o he_o say_v the_o truth_n be_v sometime_o the_o lord_n do_v deny_v i_o that_o mercy_n which_o i_o desire_v and_o bless_v be_v god_n for_o it_o for_o by_o this_o mean_v i_o find_v my_o proud_a heart_n humble_v and_o bring_v down_o therefore_o if_o god_n will_v have_v i_o do_v any_o duty_n i_o will_v do_v it_o and_o if_o he_o cast_v shame_n and_o disgrace_n upon_o i_o in_o it_o i_o be_o content_v this_o be_v a_o heart_n true_o humble_v but_o the_o discourage_v soul_n not_o receive_v that_o strength_n and_o assistance_n in_o his_o duty_n that_o he_o will_v have_v he_o be_v marvellous_a untoward_a and_o unwilling_a to_o come_v to_o the_o like_a service_n any_o more_o for_o fear_v he_o want_v success_n and_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v the_o want_n of_o it_o humiliation_n as_o it_o be_v level_v the_o heart_n that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n may_v take_v place_n there_o but_o this_o discouragement_n delve_n the_o heart_n and_o make_v it_o more_o unfit_a for_o christ_n john_n baptist_n be_v send_v to_o prepare_v the_o way_n for_o christ_n that_o every_o valley_n may_v be_v fill_v and_o every_o mountain_n and_o hill_n bring_v low_a the_o high_a way_n wherein_o christ_n go_v be_v the_o heart_n and_o the_o ditch_n or_o valley_n be_v the_o desperate_a discourage_v heart_n and_o this_o faint_a of_o heart_n unfit_v the_o way_n for_o christ_n 3.4_o luke_n 3.4_o as_o well_o as_o the_o mountain_n and_o hill_n as_o humiliation_n level_v the_o heart_n and_o make_v it_o fit_a for_o christ_n so_o this_o discouragement_n delve_n and_o unfit_n the_o soul_n to_o be_v quicken_v and_o to_o give_v way_n to_o a_o saviour_n and_o to_o entertain_v he_o humiliation_n take_v off_o the_o knottinesse_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o make_v it_o run_v fast_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n commandment_n but_o discouragement_n hang_v a_o back_n bias_n upon_o the_o soul_n that_o as_o a_o back_n bias_n hold_v a_o bowl_n that_o a_o man_n can_v make_v it_o run_v right_a to_o the_o mark_n so_o this_o discouragement_n be_v like_o the_o back_n bias_n and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o a_o discourage_v heart_n come_v so_o awkely_a to_o holy_a duty_n as_o to_o conference_n fast_v and_o the_o like_a if_o a_o man_n go_v to_o fast_v and_o prayer_n private_o if_o god_n give_v he_o not_o that_o success_n that_o he_o will_v and_o he_o can_v do_v it_o as_o he_o desire_v oh_o how_o hardly_o be_v he_o draw_v to_o it_o again_o but_o the_o humble_a soul_n say_v bless_a be_v god_n though_o i_o have_v not_o that_o strength_n and_o that_o success_n that_o i_o desire_v yet_o if_o the_o lord_n shall_v call_v i_o to_o the_o like_a duty_n i_o will_v go_v again_o though_o i_o can_v do_v as_o i_o will_v so_o then_o know_v that_o there_o be_v no_o ground_n for_o discouragement_n that_o be_v a_o sin_n be_v content_v yet_o for_o ever_o humble_v object_n 2_o in_o the_o next_o place_n the_o discontent_a person_n think_v his_o way_n reasonable_a and_o it_o be_v warrantable_a for_o he_o now_o and_o then_o to_o be_v discontent_v and_o therefore_o he_o say_v what_o will_v you_o have_v a_o man_n do_v you_o know_v it_o and_o i_o find_v it_o that_o god_n have_v deny_v i_o many_o ability_n in_o those_o duty_n which_o he_o call_v for_o at_o my_o hand_n other_o have_v gift_n and_o power_n and_o ability_n but_o i_o be_o weak_a and_o feeble_a and_o can_v any_o man_n nay_o shall_v any_o man_n be_v content_v with_o this_o will_v you_o have_v a_o man_n content_a with_o his_o sin_n i_o can_v believe_v it_o thus_o because_o they_o see_v such_o deadness_n and_o untowardness_n of_o heart_n therefore_o they_o
conceive_v that_o they_o do_v well_o to_o be_v discontent_v and_o they_o cast_v all_o the_o fault_n upon_o their_o sin_n answer_n this_o be_v a_o desperate_a hindrance_n to_o all_o good_a duty_n and_o therefore_o i_o answer_v it_o thus_o it_o be_v true_a the_o lord_n allow_v it_o and_o warrant_v it_o that_o thou_o shall_v be_v displease_v with_o thy_o sin_n not_o to_o be_v under_o the_o power_n and_o rule_v of_o it_o and_o the_o humble_a heart_n be_v at_o the_o dispose_n of_o god_n nor_o at_o the_o dispose_n of_o sin_n but_o yet_o be_v wise_a in_o this_o case_n it_o be_v one_o thing_n for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v discontent_v with_o his_o corruption_n and_o its_o a_o other_o thing_n to_o be_v discontent_v with_o that_o condition_n wherein_o he_o be_v thou_o may_v and_o ought_v to_o be_v discontent_v with_o thy_o pride_n and_o corruption_n and_o with_o thy_o unbelief_n but_o take_v heed_n that_o thou_o be_v not_o discontent_v with_o the_o weakness_n of_o thy_o gift_n and_o part_n this_o be_v damnable_a pride_n and_o it_o be_v a_o argument_n that_o thou_o be_v not_o content_a to_o be_v at_o god_n find_v and_o this_o be_v thy_o disease_n twenty_o to_o one_o now_o that_o thou_o may_v know_v whether_o thy_o discontentment_n be_v for_o thy_o corruption_n or_o for_o thy_o estate_n and_o the_o weakness_n of_o thy_o part_n i_o show_v it_o thus_o he_o that_o be_v discontent_v with_o his_o sin_n will_v never_o sin_v in_o his_o discontentednesse_n as_o we_o use_v to_o say_v of_o immoderate_a sorrow_n if_o any_o man_n loose_v a_o friend_n and_o begin_v to_o grieve_v and_o sorrow_n excessive_o we_o use_v to_o say_v take_v heed_n that_o you_o mourn_v not_o out_o of_o measure_n mark_v what_o he_o reply_v may_v not_o a_o man_n sorrow_n for_o his_o his_o sin_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v be_v thou_o sorrowful_a for_o sin_n and_o will_v thou_o sin_v deep_o in_o thy_o sorrow_n and_o resist_v the_o good_a will_n of_o the_o lord_n no_o thou_o have_v lose_v a_o friend_n and_o mean_n and_o therefore_o thou_o mourn_v this_o be_v carnal_a sorrow_n and_o in_o this_o thou_o never_o sorrow_v for_o sin_n he_o that_o be_v sorrowful_a for_o his_o sin_n will_v not_o sin_n in_o his_o sorrow_n it_o be_v for_o thy_o condition_n that_o thou_o be_v so_o sorrowful_a and_o discontent_a be_v it_o not_o so_o with_o thy_o soul_n that_o thy_o heart_n be_v toss_v up_o and_o down_o in_o a_o restless_a disquiet_n and_o be_v thou_o not_o out_o of_o the_o command_n of_o thyself_o and_o be_v thou_o not_o hurry_v up_o and_o down_o in_o a_o confuse_a lumber_n in_o thy_o mind_n because_o thou_o be_v not_o fit_a for_o duty_n if_o it_o be_v so_o with_o thou_o than_o thou_o do_v sin_n desperate_o in_o thy_o discontentment_n it_o be_v a_o rule_n in_o war_n if_o a_o army_n be_v once_o scatter_v and_o disperse_v it_o will_v hardly_o come_v on_o again_o because_o it_o be_v put_v out_o of_o rank_n and_o order_n so_o that_o soul_n be_v discontent_v with_o his_o estate_n that_o be_v make_v unfit_a for_o duty_n and_o unwieldy_a in_o they_o that_o discontentment_n which_o unfit_v a_o man_n to_o be_v at_o god_n dispose_n it_o be_v not_o the_o work_n of_o humiliation_n but_o a_o work_n of_o pride_n but_o it_o be_v so_o with_o thou_o thy_o discontentment_n make_v thou_o unable_a to_o bear_v god_n hand_n and_o the_o want_n of_o any_o thing_n and_o make_v thou_o more_o unfit_a for_o duty_n and_o it_o be_v not_o for_o sin_n but_o for_o thy_o weakness_n in_o gift_n and_o for_o thy_o condition_n and_o therefore_o thou_o be_v possess_v with_o this_o pride_n of_o heart_n humiliation_n the_o four_o and_o last_o note_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o humiliation_n the_o four_o and_o last_o note_n and_o trial_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o humiliation_n be_v this_o if_o thou_o will_v know_v how_o much_o pride_n be_v in_o thy_o heart_n then_o consider_v how_o thy_o soul_n stand_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o word_n and_o truth_n of_o god_n that_o cross_v thy_o belove_a lust_n and_o those_o corruption_n to_o which_o thy_o soul_n have_v cleaved_a in_o the_o time_n of_o thy_o wretchedness_n and_o in_o this_o there_o be_v two_o passage_n first_o see_v how_o thy_o heart_n behave_v itself_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o strict_a command_n of_o god_n second_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o keen_a reproof_n and_o the_o sharp_a admonition_n that_o be_v suggest_v into_o thy_o heart_n see_v how_o thy_o heart_n be_v able_a to_o bear_v the_o reproof_n of_o a_o enemy_n or_o the_o admonition_n of_o a_o faithful_a minister_n of_o god_n when_o he_o meet_v with_o thy_o darling_n lust_n when_o thy_o heart_n come_v under_o these_o command_n and_o these_o reproof_n if_o thou_o find_v thy_o heart_n swell_v and_o bubble_v against_o the_o truth_n and_o thy_o heart_n begin_v to_o be_v angry_a with_o the_o word_n and_o minister_n and_o all_o then_o know_v this_o that_o certain_o so_o much_o of_o this_o as_o there_o be_v in_o thy_o heart_n so_o much_o thy_o soul_n want_v of_o humiliation_n be_v not_o this_o pride_n that_o the_o soul_n shall_v lift_v up_o itself_o against_o the_o lord_n of_o heaven_n and_o take_v the_o way_n of_o god_n word_n and_o when_o the_o frothy_a frantic_a heart_n of_o a_o man_n will_v bear_v down_o the_o command_n of_o god_n &_o let_v the_o command_n of_o god_n fall_v to_o the_o ground_n rather_o than_o let_v a_o corruption_n fall_v be_v not_o this_o this_o be_v infinite_a and_o intolerable_a pride_n you_o may_v be_v good_a servant_n and_o good_a woman_n but_o its_o strange_a if_o you_o be_v so_o object_n but_o you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v a_o man_n see_v a_o difference_n in_o all_o these_o answ_n i_o say_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n and_o the_o sinner_n the_o faithful_a and_o the_o faithless_a all_o have_v this_o in_o their_o manner_n and_o
