just_a sense_n of_o the_o sacredness_n of_o that_o service_n and_o the_o greatness_n of_o that_o god_n that_o it_o be_v do_v unto_o and_o therefore_o to_o perform_v any_o such_o service_n of_o apostle_n explain_v it_o by_o afterward_o in_o this_o text_n and_o we_o need_v but_o let_v he_o expound_v his_o own_o meaning_n in_o order_n to_o our_o right_a understanding_n of_o it_o now_o that_o he_o do_v in_o the_o last_o clause_n of_o it_o not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n this_o be_v add_v by_o the_o apostle_n both_o as_o a_o explanation_n of_o the_o precedent_a phrase_n eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o and_o a_o reason_n too_o of_o that_o punishment_n that_o be_v due_a to_o he_o that_o do_v so_o he_o that_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o do_v not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n and_o he_o that_o do_v not_o so_o eat_v and_o drink_v damnation_n to_o himself_o this_o expression_n i_o shall_v choose_v to_o explain_v in_o the_o second_o place_n as_o be_v indeed_o the_o true_a key_n to_o this_o text_n and_o what_o the_o import_n of_o it_o be_v we_o may_v easy_o learn_v both_o from_o the_o phrase_n and_o that_o particular_a error_n and_o miscarriage_n of_o these_o corinthian_n which_o the_o apostle_n do_v here_o perstringe_n and_o which_o this_o whole_a discourse_n have_v a_o direct_a regard_n unto_o the_o greek_a word_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d signify_v not_o difference_v or_o distinguish_v the_o lord_n body_n and_o be_v the_o word_n common_o use_v to_o signify_v the_o difference_v of_o meat_n and_o other_o thing_n under_o the_o law_n and_o be_v apply_v here_o to_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n it_o signify_v plain_o the_o eat_n and_o drink_v the_o holy_a symbol_n of_o it_o as_o common_a thing_n the_o eat_v that_o bread_n as_o common_a bread_n and_o drink_v that_o cup_n as_o common_a wine_n the_o put_v no_o difference_n between_o that_o
worthy_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o yet_o it_o be_v too_o notorious_a that_o this_o fear_n of_o damnation_n do_v not_o restrain_v they_o from_o they_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a say_n but_o it_o be_v too_o true_a those_o very_a man_n that_o be_v so_o very_o scrupulous_a and_o so_o very_o fearful_a of_o damnation_n in_o this_o yet_o appear_v open_o regardless_o and_o proof_n against_o all_o fear_n of_o it_o in_o other_o thing_n wherein_o it_o be_v as_o reasonable_a and_o necessary_a to_o be_v fear_v there_o be_v too_o many_o man_n on_o one_o hand_n that_o can_v live_v and_o persist_v obstinate_o in_o plain_a schism_n allow_v themselves_o in_o rebellion_n and_o the_o most_o factious_a course_n oppose_v government_n speak_v evil_a of_o dignity_n pride_n and_o uncharitableness_n judge_v and_o in_o these_o thing_n who_o yet_o when_o invite_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n or_o reprove_v for_o the_o neglect_n of_o it_o seem_v wonderful_a scrupulous_a and_o fearful_a of_o damnation_n if_o do_v this_o for_o damnation_n be_v still_o the_o same_o thing_n and_o equal_o to_o be_v dread_v but_o if_o it_o do_v not_o it_o be_v plain_a you_o use_v it_o as_o subterfuge_n and_o artifice_v you_o proclaim_v your_o own_o insincerity_n and_o hypocrisy_n in_o it_o and_o the_o excuse_n itself_o not_o only_o aggravate_v but_o become_v part_n of_o the_o crime_n i_o have_v add_v this_o consideration_n only_a ex_fw-la abundanti_fw-la and_o to_o argue_v with_o some_o man_n even_o upon_o their_o own_o pretence_n and_o if_o they_o will_v honest_o reflect_v upon_o it_o it_o will_v hardly_o fail_v of_o some_o effect_n on_o they_o but_o to_o other_o that_o be_v real_o scrupulous_a and_o fearful_a of_o damnation_n upon_o every_o failure_n to_o receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n so_o well_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o argue_v their_o fear_n upon_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o text_n to_o these_o i_o say_v the_o former_a consideration_n will_v be_v sufficient_a since_o it_o be_v not_o this_o eternal_a damnation_n that_o the_o apostle_n mean_v in_o this_o place_n and_o let_v i_o add_v that_o if_o eternal_a damnation_n be_v not_o threaten_v to_o the_o corinthian_n here_o who_o so_o shameful_o and_o gross_o profane_v this_o holy_a service_n much_o less_o be_v it_o present_o to_o be_v fear_v by_o those_o who_o receive_v it_o as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v though_o not_o so_o well_o as_o they_o shall_v if_o so_o extreme_a gross_a and_o scandalous_a a_o profanation_n be_v not_o threaten_v with_o it_o sure_o every_o small_a failure_n need_v not_o fear_v it_o chap._n vii_o i_o advance_v now_o to_o the_o four_o consideration_n which_o i_o propose_v for_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o present_a collection_n viz._n that_o whatever_o sin_n or_o guilt_n there_o be_v in_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o there_o be_v the_o same_o yea_o there_o be_v great_a in_o not_o eat_v and_o drink_v at_o all_o the_o truth_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o this_o rely_v upon_o a_o reason_n that_o i_o have_v make_v good_a already_o and_o that_o be_v that_o eat_v and_o drink_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v a_o necessary_a indispensible_a duty_n tie_v immediate_o upon_o all_o christian_n by_o the_o command_n of_o their_o lord_n and_o that_o upon_o a_o reason_n which_o will_v ever_o have_v effect_n upon_o all_o those_o that_o have_v any_o love_n and_o respect_n to_o he_o obligation_n to_o come_v many_o book_n write_v to_o instruct_v man_n in_o the_o method_n of_o due_a preparation_n but_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n of_o insist_v upon_o that_o which_o be_v our_o obligation_n and_o duty_n to_o do_v what_o he_o have_v command_v though_o he_o do_v not_o do_v it_o so_o well_o as_o he_o shall_v and_o perhaps_o may_v but_o it_o be_v next_o to_o extremity_n of_o profaneness_n to_o neglect_v his_o duty_n altogether_o under_o a_o pretence_n that_o he_o can_v do_v it_o so_o well_o as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v do_v and_o certain_o god_n will_v bear_v rather_o with_o a_o bungler_n in_o his_o service_n than_o a_o neglecter_n of_o it_o and_o pardon_v a_o honest_a endeavour_n though_o attend_v with_o many_o fail_n much_o easy_a than_o he_o who_o never_o try_v nor_o endeavour_n at_o all_o it_o be_v our_o happiness_n and_o comfort_n that_o god_n have_v assure_v we_o he_o will_v deal_v with_o we_o by_o these_o measure_n and_o accept_v or_o reject_v man_n performance_n by_o these_o rule_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n for_o so_o he_o have_v assure_v we_o in_o the_o old_a testament_n that_o he_o will_v not_o break_v the_o bruise_a reed_n nor_o quench_v the_o smoke_a flax_n and_o so_o the_o apostle_n have_v let_v we_o know_v in_o the_o new_a that_o if_o there_o be_v first_o a_o willing_a heart_n a_o honest_a endeavour_n to_o do_v as_o well_o as_o a_o man_n can_v it_o shall_v be_v accept_v according_a to_o what_o a_o man_n have_v and_o not_o according_a to_o what_o he_o have_v not_o now_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o mighty_a encouragement_n and_o comfort_n to_o we_o and_o sufficient_a to_o set_v we_o right_o in_o this_o matter_n to_o make_v we_o think_v it_o much_o better_a and_o safe_a to_o do_v our_o duty_n as_o well_o as_o we_o can_v though_o we_o be_v too_o sensible_a that_o many_o error_n attend_v our_o do_v it_o than_o to_o sit_v down_o in_o a_o total_a disregard_n of_o it_o sect_n iii_o 4._o our_o own_o confession_n and_o practice_n be_v evidence_n also_o in_o this_o case_n as_o we_o do_v not_o count_v this_o a_o good_a reason_n to_o abstain_v from_o the_o service_n of_o religion_n upon_o so_o we_o do_v act_v contrary_a to_o it_o whatever_o error_n and_o fail_n attend_v man_n holy_a thing_n yet_o general_o they_o keep_v up_o the_o practice_n of_o they_o the_o sense_n of_o sin_n or_o guilt_n in_o do_v they_o seldom_o prevail_v upon_o they_o to_o that_o degree_n as_o to_o cause_v they_o whole_o to_o intermit_v and_o lay_v aside_o the_o care_n of_o they_o those_o man_n that_o be_v most_o conscious_a to_o themselves_o of_o their_o error_n in_o hear_v god_n word_n or_o in_o pray_v to_o he_o yet_o think_v it_o their_o duty_n to_o come_v to_o church_n and_o join_v in_o the_o public_a service_n of_o it_o esteem_v it_o much_o better_a to_o do_v something_o of_o their_o duty_n than_o nothing_o at_o all_o and_o judge_v it_o a_o lesser_a guilt_n to_o err_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v their_o duty_n than_o whole_o to_o neglect_v all_o do_n of_o it_o i_o appeal_v to_o our_o common_a practice_n these_o be_v the_o measure_n that_o we_o act_n and_o judge_v by_o in_o all_o other_o instance_n we_o do_v not_o think_v we_o may_v safe_o neglect_v our_o duty_n because_o we_o fear_v we_o shall_v do_v it_o amiss_o nor_o do_v we_o think_v ourselves_o discharge_v from_o the_o service_n of_o religion_n upon_o a_o fear_n of_o sin_v and_o offend_v god_n in_o the_o do_n of_o they_o sect_n vi_o now_o from_o all_o these_o premise_n the_o conclusion_n methinks_v shall_v follow_v very_o plain_o viz._n that_o since_o this_o equal_a sense_n of_o danger_n and_o guilt_n in_o do_v other_o service_n of_o our_o religion_n amiss_o do_v not_o detain_v we_o from_o do_v of_o they_o that_o therefore_o it_o ought_v not_o to_o do_v it_o in_o this_o in_o the_o do_v other_o duty_n and_o service_n of_o religion_n man_n do_v so_o far_o surmount_v the_o fear_n and_o danger_n of_o sin_v in_o they_o as_o to_o keep_v up_o the_o regular_a and_o unconstant_a practice_n of_o they_o they_o do_v not_o suffer_v these_o fear_n so_o far_o to_o prevail_v upon_o they_o as_o to_o cause_v they_o whole_o to_o cast_v off_o the_o care_n of_o they_o but_o they_o judge_v it_o much_o better_a to_o do_v something_o of_o their_o duty_n than_o nothing_o at_o all_o and_o a_o much_o less_o degree_n of_o guilt_n to_o do_v their_o duty_n though_o they_o fail_v in_o it_o and_o fall_v short_a of_o that_o exactness_n and_o care_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v do_v with_o than_o to_o sit_v down_o in_o the_o total_a omission_n of_o it_o to_o live_v and_o die_v in_o the_o neglect_n of_o it_o as_o i_o fear_v a_o great_a many_o of_o man_n do_v in_o this_o now_o in_o these_o case_n man_n judge_v aright_o and_o have_v both_o the_o universal_a reason_n of_o mankind_n and_o their_o own_o mind_n to_o acquit_v they_o therein_o and_o certain_o they_o do_v choose_v the_o much_o safe_a side_n of_o the_o question_n i_o ask_v then_o why_o they_o shall_v not_o proceed_v by_o the_o same_o measure_n in_o our_o present_a case_n why_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o be_v so_o evident_a to_o we_o and_o so_o effectual_a upon_o we_o in_o all_o other_o case_n shall_v not_o be_v equal_o so_o in_o this_o i_o wish_v man_n will_v sober_o consider_v thing_n and_o judge_v righteous_a judgement_n and_o not_o make_v difference_n where_o there_o be_v real_o none_o i_o tell_v you_o before_o it_o be_v a_o ill_a sign_n when_o man_n be_v scrupulous_a only_o on_o one_o side_n and_o when_o that_o reason_n which_o prevail_v so_o easy_o upon_o they_o in_o one_o case_n shall_v not_o at_o all_o affect_v they_o in_o another_o in_o such_o a_o case_n it_o be_v plain_a man_n will_n and_o passion_n make_v the_o difference_n and_o not_o their_o judgement_n and_o to_o deal_v plain_o i_o be_o afraid_a it_o be_v just_a so_o in_o our_o present_a case_n man_n have_v no_o mind_n to_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o therefore_o let_v every_o little_a shadow_n of_o a_o reason_n keep_v they_o from_o it_o it_o be_v not_o because_o they_o have_v any_o true_a argument_n against_o it_o but_o because_o they_o have_v no_o inclination_n to_o the_o thing_n itself_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o main_a reason_n why_o all_o our_o reason_n with_o man_n in_o this_o matter_n be_v so_o insuccessful_a they_o encounter_v prejudices_fw-la and_o contrary_a passion_n which_o too_o common_o be_v obstinate_a and_o blind_a and_o man_n will_v not_o be_v persuade_v to_o quit_v they_o no_o not_o when_o their_o reason_n be_v convince_v and_o all_o their_o exception_n and_o argument_n satisfy_v it_o be_v not_o in_o this_o case_n only_o that_o man_n believe_v with_o their_o will_n and_o affection_n more_o than_o with_o their_o judgement_n and_o choose_v or_o refuse_v thing_n not_o as_o they_o have_v true_a reason_n and_o argument_n for_o they_o but_o as_o they_o have_v inclination_n to_o or_o prejudices_fw-la against_o they_o the_o main_a fault_n of_o man_n being_n more_o careless_a to_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n than_o to_o other_o ministry_n of_o religion_n lie_v in_o their_o will_n more_o than_o real_a judgement_n otherwise_o the_o same_o measure_n will_v be_v observe_v in_o both_o and_o the_o argument_n that_o prevail_v with_o they_o to_o act_v regular_o in_o one_o case_n
tell_v i_o if_o it_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v reform_v and_o amend_v one_o will_v think_v there_o be_v no_o need_n to_o ask_v this_o question_n nor_o to_o doubt_v whether_o man_n shall_v amend_v their_o fault_n or_o not_o this_o be_v a_o thing_n not_o to_o be_v so_o much_o as_o deliberate_v about_o by_o any_o that_o consider_v what_o a_o evil_a sin_n be_v in_o itself_o what_o a_o train_n of_o mischief_n it_o draw_v after_o it_o and_o what_o a_o dreadful_a thing_n it_o be_v to_o live_v in_o that_o which_o expose_v a_o man_n to_o the_o wrath_n of_o a_o almighty_a god_n and_o such_o a_o thing_n unfitness_n for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v if_o it_o be_v a_o sin._n i_o will_v therefore_o have_v man_n as_o sensible_a and_o fearful_a of_o sin_n in_o this_o as_o they_o appear_v to_o be_v of_o it_o on_o the_o other_o side_n and_o then_o they_o will_v no_o more_o dare_v to_o continue_v in_o this_o than_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o other_o we_o see_v some_o man_n mighty_a sensible_a of_o the_o sin_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o and_o very_o fearful_a of_o be_v guilty_a of_o it_o now_o i_o will_v fain_o have_v they_o as_o sensible_a of_o the_o sin_n of_o be_v unworthy_a and_o unfit_a to_o eat_v and_o as_o much_o afraid_a to_o continue_v in_o it_o the_o guilt_n be_v the_o same_o in_o both_o case_n and_o therefore_o if_o they_o be_v afraid_a of_o sin_n upon_o a_o true_a reason_n in_o one_o they_o will_v be_v so_o in_o the_o other_o also_o i_o have_v often_o say_v and_o some_o man_n can_v be_v tell_v it_o too_o often_o that_o it_o be_v a_o bad_a sign_n to_o see_v man_n scrupulous_a and_o tender_a only_o on_o one_o side_n and_o it_o be_v a_o unaccountable_a thing_n to_o see_v man_n so_o fearful_a of_o sin_v in_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n but_o never_o to_o scruple_n or_o be_v afraid_a of_o sin_v in_o stay_v from_o it_o and_o be_v unfit_a to_o come_v start_n and_o tremble_v at_o the_o thought_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o one_o but_o be_v regardless_o and_o insensible_a of_o it_o in_o the_o other_o 3._o if_o it_o be_v then_o a_o sin_n and_o what_o man_n ought_v to_o amend_v i_o ask_v in_o the_o three_o place_n when_o man_n intend_v to_o set_v about_o it_o and_o endeavour_v to_o become_v fit_a must_v it_o be_v postpone_v and_o put_v off_o as_o many_o other_o good_a and_o necessary_a thing_n be_v to_o hereafter_o and_o to_o a_o time_n to_o come_v no_o body_n know_v when_o this_o be_v that_o unaccountable_a folly_n that_o man_n be_v so_o ready_a to_o condemn_v all_o other_o for_o in_o other_o case_n and_o therefore_o shall_v not_o allow_v in_o themselves_o here_o all_o the_o great_a argument_n that_o combine_v against_o the_o folly_n and_o danger_n of_o procrastinate_v in_o repentance_n and_o put_v off_o good_a purpose_n to_o hereafter_o unite_v against_o this_o and_o man_n that_o can_v urge_v they_o so_o ready_o to_o other_o in_o those_o case_n shall_v not_o resist_v they_o themselves_o in_o this_o beside_o all_o which_o there_o be_v one_o consideration_n which_o seem_v peculiar_a in_o this_o case_n and_o aught_o to_o be_v of_o effect_n in_o it_o and_o that_o be_v that_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v one_o good_a mean_n to_o become_v fit_a and_o to_o redress_v the_o unworthiness_n that_o man_n complain_v of_o i_o say_v once_o before_o in_o this_o discourse_n that_o few_o man_n become_v more_o fit_a by_o stay_v from_o it_o but_o many_o have_v by_o come_v to_o it_o the_o long_a man_n stay_v away_o the_o more_o unfit_a in_o all_o probability_n they_o will_v be_v and_o one_o good_a way_n of_o come_v fit_o be_v to_o come_v as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v so_o that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o here_o as_o it_o be_v in_o some_o other_o case_n the_o soon_o man_n set_v about_o redress_v the_o unfitness_n the_o easy_a the_o do_v it_o will_v be_v but_o the_o very_a set_n about_o it_o be_v a_o good_a part_n of_o it_o and_o i_o not_o only_o say_v that_o the_o long_a man_n continue_v unfit_a the_o more_o guilt_n they_o contract_v and_o the_o heavy_a will_v the_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n be_v the_o great_a hazard_n they_o run_v and_o put_v their_o duty_n upon_o the_o great_a uncertainty_n and_o chance_n but_o they_o aggravate_v their_o unfitness_n enhanse_v their_o indisposition_n and_o contribute_v to_o the_o difficulty_n of_o remove_v the_o same_o 4._o have_v get_v thus_o far_o then_o that_o this_o be_v a_o evil_a that_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v reform_v and_o the_o soon_o the_o better_a in_o all_o respect_n it_o will_v easy_o be_v consider_v that_o if_o man_n do_v sit_v down_o under_o their_o unfitness_n it_o be_v plain_o wilful_a and_o affect_a man_n that_o know_v their_o fault_n and_o how_o great_o they_o be_v concern_v to_o reform_v they_o and_o yet_o do_v not_o show_v themselves_o to_o be_v great_o in_o love_n with_o they_o or_o enslave_v to_o they_o and_o man_n that_o will_v not_o strive_v against_o their_o disease_n seem_v please_v with_o they_o now_o in_o such_o a_o case_n the_o evil_a of_o the_o indisposition_n double_v and_o whatever_o guilt_n result_v from_o it_o swell_v in_o the_o same_o proportion_n he_o that_o wilful_o indulge_v to_o a_o sin_n enhanse_v the_o guilt_n of_o it_o and_o he_o that_o neglect_v a_o duty_n because_o he_o cherish_v that_o which_o unfit_v he_o for_o it_o have_v a_o double_a guilt_n to_o answer_v for_o involuntary_a unaffected_a indisposition_n that_o come_v upon_o man_n by_o surprise_n by_o the_o violence_n of_o temptation_n or_o upon_o the_o score_n of_o unavoidable_a infirmity_n be_v pitiable_a and_o capable_a of_o mercy_n but_o he_o that_o cherish_v they_o to_o excuse_v he_o from_o duty_n stand_v double_o guilty_a before_o god._n 5._o to_o all_o which_o consideration_n i_o only_o add_v this_o one_o more_o that_o whether_o man_n do_v or_o do_v not_o endeavour_v to_o redress_v their_o present_a unfitness_n for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n they_o must_v be_v let_v know_v and_o they_o ought_v serious_o to_o consider_v that_o continual_a unfitness_n can_v never_o excuse_v they_o from_o it_o the_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n i_o have_v show_v be_v a_o necessary_a indispensible_a christian_a duty_n for_o which_o nothing_o that_o i_o know_v of_o but_o natural_a incapacity_n can_v excuse_v man_n much_o less_o such_o moral_a indisposition_n as_o both_o shall_v and_o easy_o may_v be_v remove_v a_o present_a accidental_a indisposition_n how_o fair_a soever_o it_o may_v bid_v yet_o can_v never_o excuse_v a_o single_a omission_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o if_o so_o than_o i_o be_o sure_a no_o indisposition_n can_v excuse_v the_o total_a continue_a neglect_n of_o it_o and_o of_o all_o thing_n certain_o it_o be_v most_o strange_a if_o man_n shall_v hope_v to_o be_v excuse_v in_o the_o continual_a neglect_n of_o their_o duty_n upon_o pretence_n of_o continual_a unfitness_n to_o do_v it_o this_o be_v so_o abhorrent_n to_o human_a reason_n that_o it_o can_v be_v believe_v no_o man_n live_a will_v allow_v it_o in_o a_o servant_n in_o a_o child_n or_o in_o any_o that_o owe_v duty_n to_o he_o and_o therefore_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o hope_v that_o god_n will_v allow_v it_o in_o himself_o especial_o when_o he_o consider_v that_o that_o unfitness_n have_v come_v upon_o he_o through_o his_o own_o fault_n and_o may_v be_v redress_v by_o some_o competent_a care_n chap._n xi_o we_o be_v now_o come_v to_o the_o three_o and_o last_o collection_n which_o be_v make_v from_o this_o text_n viz._n that_o the_o true_a and_o only_a design_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o these_o word_n and_o in_o this_o form_n of_o speak_v be_v to_o engage_v the_o corinthian_n to_o that_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n that_o become_v so_o solemn_a a_o service_n of_o religion_n as_o that_o be_v i_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o stay_v long_o on_o this_o argument_n for_o i_o design_v but_o two_o thing_n only_o upon_o it_o and_o a_o little_a will_v suffice_v to_o dispatch_v they_o both_o 1._o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o prove_v that_o this_o be_v real_o the_o sense_n of_o these_o word_n and_o the_o apostle_n great_a design_n in_o they_o 2._o i_o shall_v represent_v the_o reasonableness_n of_o the_o thing_n and_o show_v how_o fit_a and_o necessary_a devotion_n and_o reverence_n be_v for_o they_o that_o approach_n to_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n 1._o that_o this_o be_v real_o the_o design_n and_o purport_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o these_o word_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v good_a from_o these_o three_o consideration_n first_o what_o the_o crime_n of_o the_o corinthian_n be_v that_o these_o word_n be_v intend_v to_o reform_v second_o the_o phrase_n of_o the_o text_n in_o which_o he_o endeavour_v that_o reformation_n and_o three_o
love_n of_o god_n to_o poor_a man_n what_o can_v so_o clear_o and_o almost_o beyond_o desire_n assure_v we_o of_o it_o as_o the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n you_o may_v see_v how_o the_o scripture_n triumph_v in_o this_o and_o magnify_v it_o as_o the_o mighty_a instance_n the_o high_a exaltation_n of_o the_o divine_a love_n that_o be_v conceivable_a and_o how_o can_v i_o possible_o question_v this_o when_o i_o see_v he_o part_v with_o his_o own_o son_n his_o only_a son_n the_o son_n of_o his_o bosom_n and_o dear_a love_n yea_o expose_v he_o to_o suffering_n and_o misery_n to_o pain_n and_o shame_n to_o death_n itself_o nay_o to_o that_o ignominious_a and_o curse_a death_n upon_o the_o cross_n rather_o than_o poor_a man_n shall_v perish_v eternal_o and_o there_o shall_v not_o be_v a_o way_n to_o save_v he_o by_o 4._o and_o last_o as_o for_o joy_n in_o this_o love_n of_o god_n as_o for_o praise_n and_o thankfulness_n for_o it_o what_o can_v effect_v these_o in_o my_o soul_n if_o the_o representation_n of_o christ_n death_n in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n can_v have_v i_o see_v he_o hang_v upon_o the_o cross_n bleeding_z faint_a swoon_a die_a and_o with_o expanded_a arm_n ready_a to_o receive_v and_o embrace_v i_o it_o can_v not_o have_v affect_v i_o much_o more_o than_o the_o visible_a representation_n of_o all_o this_o in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n may_v do_v if_o i_o reflect_v upon_o it_o then_o as_o i_o shall_v and_o that_o i_o shall_v do_v if_o i_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n i_o can_v scarce_o entertain_v the_o thought_n of_o it_o with_o less_o than_o rapture_n and_o transport_v but_o i_o be_o certain_o the_o most_o ill_a nature_a person_n live_v and_o for_o ever_o the_o most_o unworthy_a of_o the_o blessing_n of_o it_o if_o i_o fail_v in_o any_o measure_n of_o joy_n and_o thankfulness_n that_o i_o be_o able_a to_o express_v these_o now_o be_v even_o the_o natural_a effect_n of_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n and_o they_o be_v such_o thing_n as_o will_v make_v we_o meet_a partaker_n of_o these_o holy_a mystery_n as_o our_o church_n speak_v they_o will_v set_v we_o far_o above_o that_o unworthiness_n that_o the_o corinthian_n be_v guilty_a of_o yea_o or_o any_o other_o thing_n that_o can_v be_v count_v unworthiness_n in_o preparation_n to_o it_o by_o all_o which_o thing_n my_o four_o proposition_n be_v i_o hope_v make_v good_a and_o bring_v to_o a_o issue_n and_o so_o be_v all_o that_o i_o intend_v to_o say_v on_o this_o first_o general_a collection_n chap._n iii_o i_o advance_v to_o the_o second_o collection_n that_o i_o make_v in_o order_n to_o the_o take_v off_o the_o exception_n that_o man_n make_v against_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o the_o reason_n of_o these_o word_n viz._n that_o the_o possibility_n and_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o man_n to_o abstain_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o i_o add_v this_o collection_n to_o come_v up_o more_o close_o to_o the_o exception_n that_o man_n make_v against_o this_o service_n and_o that_o which_o they_o hope_v to_o excuse_v their_o neglect_n of_o it_o upon_o the_o danger_n they_o tell_v we_o of_o receive_v unworthy_o be_v great_a and_o the_o apostle_n say_v express_o that_o it_o be_v so_o now_o we_o have_v great_a reason_n to_o think_v ourselves_o unworthy_a to_o come_v and_o to_o fear_v we_o shall_v come_v unworthy_o if_o we_o adventure_v to_o come_v and_o therefore_o think_v it_o the_o safe_a course_n not_o to_o come_v at_o all_o than_o run_v so_o great_a a_o danger_n in_o come_v we_o be_v very_o unwilling_a to_o damn_v ourselves_o and_o we_o hold_v it_o the_o safe_a way_n to_o stay_v away_o and_o venture_v it_o to_o god_n mercy_n than_o by_o come_v unworthy_o to_o argue_v great_a modesty_n and_o regard_n to_o a_o man_n eternal_a salvation_n and_o therefore_o deserve_v to_o be_v consider_v by_o we_o now_o though_o what_o i_o have_v already_o say_v be_v intend_v order_n to_o the_o further_a satisfaction_n of_o it_o and_o when_o man_n be_v convince_v in_o this_o point_n also_o that_o if_o they_o be_v in_o any_o likelihood_n or_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o yet_o that_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o they_o to_o abstain_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o than_o it_o may_v reasonable_o be_v hope_v that_o they_o will_v no_o long_o stick_v at_o this_o exception_n nor_o hope_v to_o be_v excuse_v upon_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o this_o therefore_o be_v that_o which_o i_o be_o go_v to_o make_v good_a the_o truth_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o that_o the_o possibility_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o man_n to_o keep_v away_o from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o nor_o fit_a to_o be_v admit_v as_o a_o excuse_n in_o this_o case_n and_o therefore_o how_o honest_a and_o sincere_a how_o conscientious_a and_o tender_a soever_o man_n may_v account_v themselves_o in_o stay_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o this_o exception_n yet_o it_o be_v a_o temptation_n and_o a_o snare_n a_o very_a great_a error_n and_o mistake_n and_o that_o which_o will_v never_o bear_v they_o out_o in_o this_o omission_n and_o this_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v good_a first_o by_o the_o circumstance_n of_o this_o place_n and_o the_o apostle_n discourse_n in_o it_o and_o second_o by_o some_o argument_n found_v upon_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o thing_n 1._o from_o the_o circumstance_n of_o the_o apostle_n discourse_n in_o this_o place_n there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o it_o pertinent_a to_o my_o purpose_n but_o i_o shall_v only_o brief_o observe_v these_o few_o that_o follow_v first_o the_o corinthian_n be_v gross_o guilty_a of_o this_o sin_n they_o do_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o most_o notorious_a and_o scandalous_a manner_n possible_a the_o apostle_n plain_o tell_v they_o so_o instance_n in_o evident_a matter_n of_o fact_n and_o blame_v they_o with_o that_o sharpness_n that_o so_o foul_a a_o matter_n just_o deserve_v yea_o second_o he_o aggravate_v the_o sin_n and_o guilt_n of_o this_o miscarriage_n to_o a_o very_a high_a degree_n and_o threaten_v it_o with_o a_o very_a sharp_a and_o severe_a punishment_n and_o yet_o three_o after_o all_o this_o he_o do_v not_o give_v they_o any_o the_o least_o allowance_n or_o liberty_n to_o stay_v from_o this_o holy_a service_n till_o they_o have_v repent_v of_o and_o reform_v sufficient_o this_o miscarriage_n he_o do_v not_o tell_v they_o that_o their_o unworthiness_n render_v they_o unfit_a to_o come_v to_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n or_o give_v they_o a_o dispensation_n from_o it_o he_o do_v not_o advise_v they_o to_o stay_v away_o for_o the_o future_a till_o they_o have_v better_o fit_v themselves_o for_o fear_v of_o damnation_n by_o come_v unworthy_o you_o do_v not_o read_v one_o word_n speak_v by_o he_o to_o any_o such_o purpose_n but_o rather_o direct_o the_o contrary_a let_v a_o man_n examine_v himself_o and_o so_o let_v he_o eat_v and_o when_o you_o come_v together_o tarry_v one_o for_o another_o and_o if_o any_o man_n hunger_n let_v he_o eat_v at_o home_n that_o you_o come_v not_o together_o to_o condemnation_n in_o all_o which_o the_o apostle_n do_v not_o advise_v they_o to_o intermit_v this_o service_n and_o let_v it_o alone_o till_o they_o have_v better_a consider_v it_o and_o better_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o it_o but_o he_o require_v they_o still_o to_o keep_v up_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o but_o to_o reform_v their_o great_a fault_n and_o error_n in_o it_o to_o come_v still_o together_o to_o eat_v this_o bread_n only_o to_o examine_v themselves_o to_o consider_v what_o they_o be_v go_v about_o what_o they_o be_v do_v that_o they_o may_v eat_v it_o becoming_o as_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v he_o tax_v very_o severe_o and_o sharp_o the_o fault_n in_o do_v the_o duty_n and_o press_v earnest_o the_o reformation_n of_o that_o fault_n but_o he_o do_v not_o make_v
as_o because_o we_o count_v they_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n we_o surmount_v all_o the_o objection_n and_o plea_n of_o their_o be_v difficult_a or_o hard_a so_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v in_o this_o case_n also_o especial_o since_o we_o know_v how_o to_o have_v they_o become_v light_n and_o easy_a and_o where_o to_o have_v that_o assistance_n which_o will_v render_v they_o true_o so_o to_o we_o so_o that_o i_o may_v conclude_v safe_o upon_o the_o whole_a matter_n that_o this_o preparation_n that_o be_v necessary_a to_o be_v make_v for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v neither_o such_o a_o mighty_a great_a matter_n in_o itself_o nor_o so_o very_o difficult_a unto_o we_o but_o that_o a_o competent_a endeavour_n and_o care_n may_v suffice_v for_o it_o and_o therefore_o the_o more_o easy_a the_o preparation_n to_o be_v make_v be_v the_o more_o inexcusable_a be_v those_o man_n that_o neglect_v it_o and_o cry_v out_o against_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n because_o of_o the_o difficulty_n of_o it_o and_o i_o may_v make_v use_n of_o the_o reason_n of_o naaman_n servant_n with_o he_o and_o apply_v it_o to_o our_o present_a case_n my_o father_n if_o the_o prophet_n have_v bid_v thou_o do_v some_o great_a thing_n will_v thou_o not_o have_v do_v it_o how_o much_o more_o when_o he_o say_v wash_v and_o be_v clean_a if_o there_o be_v real_o some_o very_a great_a difficulty_n in_o that_o preparation_n that_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o if_o some_o considerable_a portion_n of_o time_n be_v needful_a for_o it_o to_o be_v make_v in_o yet_o since_o god_n have_v make_v it_o our_o necessary_a duty_n and_o necessary_a to_o such_o mighty_a purpose_n of_o gain_n on_o our_o side_n we_o shall_v and_o we_o ought_v in_o duty_n and_o wisdom_n too_o to_o take_v care_n of_o it_o how_o much_o more_o then_o when_o neither_o much_o time_n nor_o great_a pain_n be_v needful_a to_o it_o and_o how_o inexcusable_a be_v those_o that_o plead_v want_v and_o difficulty_n of_o preparation_n to_o excuse_v they_o when_o such_o a_o ordinary_a endeavour_n will_v suffice_v against_o both_o sure_o the_o regard_v such_o a_o necessary_a duty_n permit_v man_n to_o think_v that_o every_o little_a pretence_n will_v be_v dispensation_n from_o it_o in_o such_o case_n man_n pull_v off_o the_o vizard_n and_o through_o all_o the_o thin_a pretence_n the_o true_a reason_n may_v be_v see_v it_o be_v not_o because_o man_n can_v prepare_v themselves_o for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n but_o because_o they_o will_v not_o it_o be_v not_o because_o there_o be_v any_o such_o difficulty_n in_o the_o thing_n but_o because_o man_n have_v no_o mind_n to_o it_o and_o will_v glad_o upon_o any_o pretence_n be_v excuse_v from_o it_o chap._n x._o i_o go_v on_o now_o to_o the_o four_o thing_n that_o be_v propose_v on_o this_o head_n viz_o that_o though_o man_n may_v have_v be_v careless_a and_o indispose_v themselves_o for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n for_o one_o time_n yet_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v more_o careful_a to_o prepare_v themselves_o against_o the_o next_o for_o continual_a indisposition_n can_v excuse_v no_o man_n so_o that_o if_o some_o present_a indisposition_n be_v upon_o a_o man_n now_o yet_o care_v aught_o to_o be_v take_v for_o its_o removal_n that_o he_o may_v be_v fit_v and_o prepare_v to_o communicate_v the_o next_o time_n that_o providence_n call_v he_o to_o it_o before_o i_o proceed_v to_o the_o direct_a purpose_n of_o this_o period_n i_o shall_v take_v occasion_n by_o way_n of_o premisal_n to_o speak_v something_o to_o the_o supposition_n of_o it_o and_o to_o examine_v a_o case_n that_o we_o see_v often_o happen_v upon_o the_o reason_n thereof_o it_o be_v too_o common_a a_o thing_n for_o man_n that_o make_v some_o conscience_n of_o communicate_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n yet_o frequent_o to_o intermit_v it_o and_o to_o stay_v from_o it_o upon_o the_o reason_n of_o some_o present_a accidental_a indisposition_n whether_o real_a or_o pretend_v i_o examine_v not_o i_o will_v suppose_v it_o in_o their_o estimation_n to_o be_v real_a because_o i_o will_v not_o think_v that_o any_o good_a man_n will_v or_o can_v stay_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o any_o but_o what_o he_o think_v to_o be_v so_o i_o will_v fain_o hope_v this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o good_a man_n regular_a steady_a christian_n do_v indulge_v to_o themselves_o the_o liberty_n of_o neglect_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n so_o often_o as_o we_o see_v they_o do_v i_o will_v fain_o hope_v i_o say_v it_o be_v upon_o the_o reason_n of_o some_o fancy_a indisposition_n that_o be_v upon_o they_o and_o not_o either_o out_o of_o any_o disrespect_n to_o it_o or_o opinion_n that_o it_o be_v at_o their_o choice_n when_o to_o observe_v it_o or_o when_o to_o turn_v their_o back_n upon_o it_o the_o practice_n be_v too_o common_a but_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o worse_o and_o such_o man_n must_v be_v let_v know_v that_o it_o be_v not_o leave_v to_o they_o when_o to_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o when_o not_o and_o that_o a_o present_a indisposition_n will_v not_o warrant_v or_o excuse_v their_o stay_n from_o it_o i_o think_v it_o a_o very_a necessary_a thing_n to_o offer_v something_o in_o cure_n of_o this_o opinion_n and_o practice_n and_o to_o that_o end_n beg_v the_o consideration_n of_o these_o follow_a thing_n 1._o it_o be_v great_o questionable_a whether_o the_o supposition_n of_o the_o case_n be_v allowable_a viz._n whether_o any_o thing_n can_v so_o far_o indispose_v a_o regular_a good_a christian_n as_o to_o bring_v he_o into_o any_o guilt_n or_o danger_n in_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n i_o do_v real_o believe_v that_o if_o a_o man_n be_v fit_a for_o other_o service_n of_o religion_n he_o be_v fit_a for_o this_o and_o ought_v no_o more_o to_o stay_v away_o from_o one_o than_o he_o do_v from_o the_o other_o i_o can_v but_o wonder_v upon_o what_o reason_n it_o be_v that_o man_n that_o abstain_v not_o from_o other_o service_n of_o religion_n because_o of_o that_o present_a indisposition_n do_v yet_o abstain_v from_o this_o or_o conclude_v themselves_o unfit_a for_o the_o one_o when_o they_o think_v they_o be_v fit_a for_o the_o other_o i_o be_o sure_a the_o primitive_a church_n think_v otherwise_o and_o by_o canon_n make_v it_o necessary_a for_o those_o that_o join_v in_o the_o other_o public_a service_n of_o the_o church_n to_o communicate_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n too_o but_o second_o if_o we_o shall_v allow_v the_o supposition_n and_o grant_v that_o such_o a_o man_n have_v contract_v some_o indisposition_n that_o do_v render_v he_o unfit_a to_o communicate_v for_o that_o time_n yet_o he_o must_v be_v tell_v that_o that_o indisposition_n whatever_o it_o be_v can_v so_o warrant_v his_o stay_n from_o the_o sacrament_n as_o to_o excuse_v he_o from_o sin_n in_o it_o i_o hope_v i_o need_v not_o tell_v you_o that_o i_o speak_v of_o moral_a indisposition_n now_o and_o not_o of_o natural_a sickness_n and_o disease_n mischance_n and_o hurt_n etc._n etc._n suppose_v they_o not_o to_o be_v cause_v by_o our_o own_o folly_n and_o vice_n do_v not_o come_v into_o our_o present_a account_n or_o fall_v under_o this_o consideration_n they_o be_v our_o misery_n indeed_o but_o not_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o not_o perform_v the_o service_n of_o religion_n because_o of_o they_o be_v not_o our_o guilt_n in_o all_o such_o case_n that_o of_o the_o prophet_n hold_v true_a that_o god_n will_v have_v mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_v but_o i_o speak_v here_o of_o moral_a indisposition_n such_o as_o either_o through_o carlesness_n or_o humane_a infirmity_n or_o the_o surprise_n and_o violence_n of_o temptation_n or_o the_o care_n of_o the_o world_n and_o hurry_v of_o business_n man_n have_v fall_v into_o or_o from_o what_o other_o cause_n soever_o it_o may_v arise_v and_o i_o say_v howsoever_o those_o thing_n may_v indispose_v a_o man_n for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n yet_o they_o do_v not_o excuse_v his_o stay_n from_o it_o so_o that_o man_n shall_v take_v great_a heed_n in_o this_o case_n and_o not_o think_v that_o they_o may_v present_o stay_v away_o from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n as_o often_o as_o they_o find_v themselves_o indispose_v or_o unfit_a for_o it_o no_o man_n needs_o propose_v the_o question_n to_o i_o whether_o it_o be_v better_a to_o come_v in_o that_o condition_n or_o to_o stay_v away_o for_o neither_o be_v so_o much_o as_o good_a and_o it_o be_v impertinent_a to_o inquire_v which_o be_v best_a and_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n of_o either_o in_o the_o present_a case_n there_o be_v a_o
happy_a medium_n between_o these_o two_o which_o always_o be_v open_a and_o shall_v always_o be_v take_v by_o man_n in_o this_o case_n viz._n to_o do_v their_o duty_n and_o do_v all_o they_o can_v to_o remedy_n that_o which_o will_v indispose_v they_o for_o it_o a_o man_n may_v be_v sensible_a of_o his_o indisposition_n and_o sorry_a for_o it_o he_o may_v endeavour_v and_o pray_v against_o it_o implore_v the_o divine_a mercy_n for_o the_o pardon_n and_o grace_n for_o the_o removal_n of_o it_o and_o this_o he_o shall_v do_v but_o by_o no_o mean_n sit_v down_o under_o it_o and_o neglect_v so_o necessary_a a_o service_n of_o religion_n by_o reason_n of_o it_o i_o think_v it_o much_o better_o and_o therefore_o shall_v advise_v a_o man_n rather_o to_o go_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n though_o some_o present_a indisposition_n be_v upon_o he_o than_o so_o far_o to_o yield_v to_o the_o one_o as_o to_o neglect_v the_o other_o i_o be_o sure_a a_o necessary_a duty_n ought_v to_o be_v do_v and_o it_o be_v much_o better_a to_o do_v it_o as_o well_o as_o a_o man_n can_v then_o whole_o neglect_v it_o because_o he_o be_v at_o present_a unfit_a to_o do_v it_o so_o well_o as_o he_o shall_v now_o if_o man_n will_v consider_v this_o and_o remember_v that_o they_o never_o do_v well_o in_o stay_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o this_o reason_n and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o innocent_a in_o it_o do_v they_o believe_v that_o every_o time_n they_o stay_v away_o from_o it_o they_o sin_n in_o do_v so_o it_o will_v perhaps_o give_v some_o check_n to_o that_o liberty_n which_o they_o common_o take_v in_o this_o case_n and_o that_o they_o ought_v thus_o to_o believe_v and_o thus_o to_o consider_v will_v appear_v plain_a upon_o these_o two_o reason_n which_o i_o but_o just_a name_n because_o i_o have_v consider_v they_o already_o first_o that_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v a_o necessary_a service_n of_o religion_n and_o it_o be_v a_o christian_n indispensible_a duty_n to_o partake_v of_o it_o when_o he_o may_v the_o administration_n of_o the_o sacrament_n be_v on_o all_o hand_n grant_v necessary_a to_o the_o be_v of_o a_o christian_a church_n and_o the_o partake_n of_o they_o necessary_a to_o the_o be_v a_o true_a member_n of_o that_o church_n god_n have_v neither_o leave_v it_o to_o our_o liberty_n and_o choice_n whether_o we_o will_v receive_v it_o at_o all_o or_o not_o nor_o whether_o we_o will_v receive_v it_o at_o this_o time_n and_o not_o that_o it_o be_v our_o necessary_a duty_n and_o it_o be_v our_o stand_a constant_a duty_n at_o least_o every_o time_n that_o the_o church_n do_v call_v we_o unto_o it_o so_o that_o upon_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o man_n think_v themselves_o oblige_v to_o go_v to_o church_n every_o sunday_n and_o join_v in_o the_o public_a prayer_n and_o service_n of_o it_o and_o do_v not_o count_v every_o little_a indisposition_n upon_o they_o a_o discharge_n from_o it_o upon_o the_o same_o they_o ought_v to_o think_v it_o their_o duty_n to_o go_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n every_o time_n the_o church_n administer_v it_o and_o that_o every_o accidental_a indisposition_n can_v no_o more_o excuse_v they_o from_o the_o one_o than_o the_o other_o for_o the_o neglect_v it_o at_o any_o time_n be_v neglect_v a_o duty_n and_o neglect_v a_o duty_n be_v a_o sin_n and_o whatever_o any_o present_a indisposition_n may_v do_v towards_o the_o extenuate_a of_o it_o yet_o it_o can_v never_o warrant_v or_o justify_v the_o same_o and_o that_o second_o because_o that_o indisposition_n whatever_o it_o be_v be_v our_o own_o only_a fault_n this_o i_o have_v prove_v before_o whatever_o indisposition_n may_v be_v upon_o we_o whatever_o it_o be_v that_o we_o think_v render_v we_o at_o present_a unfit_a to_o communicate_v it_o be_v come_v upon_o we_o by_o our_o own_o only_a carelessness_n and_o neglect_n we_o shall_v and_o with_o the_o help_n of_o god_n grace_n we_o may_v live_v so_o as_o to_o be_v reasonable_o fit_a for_o this_o service_n at_o any_o time_n and_o it_o be_v our_o own_o folly_n and_o fault_n if_o we_o be_v not_o and_o if_o this_o be_v true_a it_o will_v soon_o satisfy_v any_o man_n in_o this_o matter_n unless_o he_o be_v so_o gross_a as_o to_o think_v that_o one_o sin_n can_v excuse_v another_o or_o that_o a_o man_n sin_n not_o in_o neglect_v that_o duty_n which_o his_o own_o folly_n and_o vice_n have_v indispose_v he_o for_o sect_n i._o and_o now_o i_o resume_v the_o purport_n of_o this_o four_o consideration_n which_o be_v this_o suppose_v some_o present_a indisposition_n and_o unfitness_n be_v upon_o a_o man_n and_o suppose_v it_o can_v be_v a_o sufficient_a excuse_n for_o his_o not_o receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n yet_o it_o will_v be_v so_o but_o for_o that_o own_o time_n only_o speedy_a care_n ought_v to_o be_v take_v against_o it_o and_o all_o endeavour_n use_v for_o the_o removal_n of_o it_o against_o the_o next_o time_n for_o continual_a unfitness_n can_v possible_o excuse_v any_o man_n from_o it_o i_o lay_v down_o this_o against_o those_o that_o be_v always_o complain_v of_o their_o unfitness_n for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o upon_o that_o reason_n stay_v always_o from_o it_o hope_v to_o be_v excuse_v in_o so_o do_v few_o thing_n be_v more_o common_a than_o this_o and_o we_o see_v it_o instance_a almost_o every_o day_n there_o be_v some_o careless_a negligent_a person_n on_o one_o hand_n that_o care_v not_o to_o come_v up_o to_o the_o full_a communion_n of_o the_o church_n and_o there_o be_v some_o disaffect_v person_n on_o the_o other_o that_o be_v prejudice_v against_o it_o but_o both_o side_n when_o press_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n have_v the_o same_o plea_n of_o their_o unworthiness_n ready_a to_o make_v and_o think_v to_o be_v excuse_v upon_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o one_o sort_n of_o man_n plead_v it_o honest_o and_o upon_o real_a scruple_n but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v another_o sort_n plead_v it_o upon_o design_n and_o use_v it_o as_o a_o artificial_a excuse_n against_o that_o which_o they_o have_v no_o mind_n unto_o i_o shall_v not_o consider_v these_o sort_n of_o people_n distinct_o and_o separately_z but_o apply_v myself_o to_o the_o removal_n of_o this_o evil_a and_o argue_v the_o unreasonableness_n of_o it_o upon_o such_o consideration_n as_o may_v be_v proper_a for_o the_o cure_n of_o it_o from_o what_o cause_n soever_o it_o may_v arise_v 1._o and_o first_o i_o desire_v to_o know_v whether_o such_o man_n count_v their_o unworthiness_n and_o unfitness_n a_o sin_n or_o not_o and_o i_o ask_v this_o question_n because_o i_o real_o fear_v a_o great_a many_o do_v not_o man_n talk_v of_o their_o unworthiness_n and_o complain_v of_o unfitness_n and_o i_o fear_v count_v it_o a_o piece_n of_o humility_n to_o do_v so_o and_o a_o acceptable_a thing_n to_o confess_v it_o without_o ever_o reflect_v sorrowful_o upon_o it_o as_o their_o great_a guilt_n and_o that_o which_o they_o be_v oblige_v to_o reform_v it_o be_v no_o new_a thing_n to_o hear_v some_o man_n declare_v tragical_o against_o themselves_o and_o to_o seem_v mighty_a exact_a in_o confess_v of_o those_o sin_n which_o they_o be_v far_o enough_o from_o hate_v or_o resolve_v to_o amend_v and_o we_o know_v too_o many_o that_o count_v it_o enough_o to_o confess_v their_o sin_n without_o any_o care_n to_o forsake_v they_o and_o i_o be_o very_o much_o afraid_a it_o be_v so_o with_o too_o many_o in_o our_o present_a case_n they_o call_v themselves_o unfit_a and_o unworthy_a for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n but_o i_o do_v not_o see_v they_o much_o concern_v or_o trouble_v that_o they_o be_v so_o no_o nor_o condemn_v or_o think_v worse_o of_o themselves_o because_o of_o it_o and_o therefore_o to_o any_o that_o plead_v this_o in_o bar_n of_o his_o come_n to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n i_o will_v make_v this_o inquiry_n in_o the_o first_o place_n whether_o they_o look_v upon_o this_o unfitness_n as_o a_o crime_n as_o a_o sin_n in_o they_o or_o not_o and_o one_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o think_v that_o man_n can_v never_o impose_v so_o far_o upon_o themselves_o as_o not_o to_o think_v so_o and_o
