while_o person_n have_v only_o so_o confuse_a and_o cloudy_a apprehension_n concern_v it_o they_o can_v neither_o be_v satisfy_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o their_o duty_n nor_o in_o their_o performance_n of_o they_o and_o there_o be_v danger_n as_o well_o in_o set_v they_o so_o high_a as_o to_o make_v they_o impracticable_a as_o in_o sink_v they_o so_o low_a as_o to_o make_v not_o only_a themselves_o but_o their_o profession_n contemptible_a for_o the_o world_n let_v we_o say_v what_o we_o will_v will_v always_o esteem_v man_n not_o mere_o for_o a_o name_n and_o profession_n but_o for_o the_o work_n and_o service_n which_o they_o do_v there_o be_v no_o doubt_n a_o reverence_n and_o respect_n due_a to_o a_o sacred_a function_n on_o its_o own_o account_n but_o the_o high_a profession_n can_v never_o maintain_v its_o character_n among_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n unless_o they_o who_o be_v of_o it_o do_v promote_v the_o general_n good_a by_o act_v suitable_o to_o it_o and_o the_o great_a the_o character_n be_v which_o any_o bear_n the_o high_a will_v the_o expectation_n of_o other_o be_v concern_v they_o and_o if_o they_o fail_v in_o the_o great_a and_o most_o useful_a duty_n of_o their_o function_n it_o will_v be_v impossible_a to_o keep_v up_o the_o regard_n which_o ought_v to_o be_v show_v unto_o it_o we_o may_v complain_v as_o long_o as_o we_o please_v of_o the_o unreasonableness_n of_o the_o contempt_n of_o the_o clergy_n in_o our_o day_n which_o be_v too_o general_a and_o too_o far_o spread_v but_o the_o most_o effectual_a mean_n to_o prevent_v or_o remove_v it_o be_v for_o the_o clergy_n to_o apply_v themselves_o to_o the_o most_o necessary_a duty_n with_o respect_n to_o the_o charge_n and_o trust_v commit_v to_o they_o but_o here_o arise_v a_o considerable_a difficulty_n which_o deserve_v to_o be_v clear_v viz._n concern_v the_o just_a measure_n of_o that_o diligence_n which_o be_v require_v for_o there_o be_v some_o who_o will_v never_o be_v satisfy_v that_o the_o clergy_n do_v enough_o let_v they_o do_v what_o they_o can_v and_o it_o be_v to_o no_o purpose_n to_o think_v to_o satisfy_v they_o who_o be_v resolve_v not_o to_o be_v satisfy_v but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n some_o care_v not_o how_o little_o they_o do_v and_o the_o less_o the_o better_a they_o be_v please_v with_o they_o and_o other_o again_o have_v raise_v their_o duty_n so_o high_a that_o scarce_o any_o man_n can_v satisfy_v himself_o that_o he_o have_v do_v his_o duty_n it_o be_v a_o matter_n therefore_o of_o the_o high_a consequence_n to_o we_o to_o understand_v what_o rule_n and_o measure_n be_v to_o be_v observe_v so_o as_o we_o may_v neither_o wilful_o neglect_v our_o duty_n nor_o despair_n of_o do_v it_o here_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v two_o thing_n 1._o how_o far_o the_o scripture_n have_v determine_v it_o 2._o what_o influence_n the_o constitution_n of_o our_o church_n be_v to_o have_v upon_o we_o concern_v it_o 1._o the_o scripture_n do_v speak_v something_o relate_v to_o it_o both_o in_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n we_o have_v the_o duty_n enjoin_v to_o the_o levitical_a priesthood_n and_o the_o extraordinary_a commission_n give_v to_o the_o prophet_n as_o to_o the_o levitical_a priesthood_n we_o can_v only_o draw_v some_o general_a instruction_n which_o may_v be_v of_o use_n although_o that_o priesthood_n have_v be_v long_o since_o at_o a_o end_n christ_n be_v our_o highpriest_n after_o another_o order_n viz._n of_o melchisedeck_v and_o our_o duty_n now_o be_v to_o observe_v his_o law_n and_o to_o offer_v that_o reasonable_a service_n which_o he_o require_v but_o even_o from_o the_o levitical_a priesthood_n we_o may_v observe_v these_o thing_n 1._o that_o although_o the_o main_a of_o their_o duty_n of_o attendance_n respect_v the_o temple_n and_o sacrifice_n yet_o at_o other_o time_n they_o be_v bind_v to_o instruct_v the_o people_n in_o the_o law_n for_o so_o moses_n leave_v it_o as_o a_o special_a charge_n to_o the_o tribe_n of_o levi_n 10._o to_o teach_v jacob_n his_o judgement_n 11._o and_o israel_n his_o law_n and_o to_o encourage_v they_o to_o do_v it_o they_o have_v a_o liberal_a maintenance_n far_o above_o the_o proportion_n of_o the_o other_o tribe_n for_o by_o computation_n it_o will_v be_v find_v that_o they_o be_v not_o much_o above_o the_o sixty_v part_n of_o the_o people_n for_o when_o the_o other_o tribe_n be_v number_v from_o twenty_o year_n old_a 46._o they_o make_v six_o hundred_o thousand_o and_o three_o thousand_o and_o five_o hundred_o and_o fifty_o but_o the_o child_n of_o levi_n be_v reckon_v by_o themselves_o from_o a_o month_n old_a 39_o and_o they_o make_v but_o two_o and_o twenty_o thousand_o so_o that_o if_o the_o male_n of_o the_o other_o tribe_n have_v be_v reckon_v as_o they_o be_v it_o be_v agree_v by_o learned_a man_n 456._o who_o have_v no_o fondness_n for_o the_o clergy_n that_o they_o do_v not_o make_v above_o a_o fifty_o or_o sixty_v part_n and_o yet_o they_o have_v near_o a_o five_o of_o the_o profit_n beside_o accidental_a perquisites_n as_o to_o sacrifice_n and_o ransom_n of_o the_o first-born_a to_o his_o service_n but_o it_o be_v not_o certain_o that_o they_o shall_v spend_v their_o time_n in_o idleness_n and_o luxury_n but_o that_o they_o may_v with_o the_o great_a freedom_n apply_v it_o seem_v the_o priest_n be_v grow_v careless_a and_o negligent_a as_o to_o their_o own_o improvement_n they_o do_v not_o know_v to_o what_o purpose_n they_o shall_v take_v so_o much_o pain_n in_o study_v the_o law_n and_o the_o difficult_a point_n of_o it_o they_o be_v for_o a_o freedom_n of_o conversation_n and_o hope_v to_o keep_v up_o their_o interest_n among_o the_o people_n that_o way_n therefore_o isaiah_n call_v they_o shepherd_n that_o can_v understand_v 11._o but_o be_v very_a intent_n upon_o their_o profit_n they_o all_o look_v to_o their_o own_o way_n every_o one_o for_o his_o abhor_v sottish_a and_o drunken_a priest_n as_o most_o unfit_a to_o approach_v to_o god_n when_o they_o be_v not_o themselves_o or_o to_o offer_v sacrifice_n for_o other_o when_o they_o make_v beast_n of_o themselves_o but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o for_o god_n require_v from_o they_o who_o be_v to_o teach_v other_o the_o law_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v always_o in_o a_o capacity_n of_o understanding_n and_o practise_v it_o themselves_o but_o if_o we_o proceed_v to_o the_o prophet_n nothing_o can_v be_v more_o dreadful_a than_o what_o god_n say_v to_o ezekiel_n that_o if_o he_o do_v not_o warn_v the_o people_n as_o he_o command_v they_o 20._o their_o blood_n will_v i_o require_v at_o thy_o hand_n 7._o be_v this_o charge_n now_o lie_v upon_o every_o one_o of_o you_o as_o to_o every_o person_n under_o your_o care_n who_o will_v not_o rather_o run_v into_o a_o wilderness_n or_o hide_v himself_o in_o a_o cave_n than_o take_v such_o a_o charge_n upon_o he_o but_o we_o must_v distinguish_v what_o be_v peculiar_a to_o the_o prophet_n immediate_a commission_n to_o go_v to_o any_o particular_a person_n in_o god_n name_n from_o a_o general_n charge_v to_o inform_v person_n make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o do_v good_a among_o they_o and_o conduct_v they_o in_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n st._n paul_n in_o his_o charge_n to_o those_o who_o he_o send_v for_o to_o miletus_n tell_v they_o that_o they_o must_v take_v heed_n to_o themselves_o 28._o and_o to_o all_o the_o flock_n over_o which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v make_v they_o overseer_n to_o feed_v the_o likely_a to_o do_v god_n service_n in_o it_o and_o we_o need_v no_o other_o instance_n than_o these_o very_a person_n themselves_o and_o if_o all_o good_a and_o humble_a and_o conscientious_a man_n shall_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o the_o hardness_n of_o the_o work_n decline_v the_o church_n service_n and_o take_v any_o other_o lawful_a employment_n what_o will_v become_v of_o the_o church_n of_o
