conscience_n because_o conscience_n tell_v i_o i_o must_v do_v it_o and_o to_o work_v in_o my_o own_o strength_n though_o it_o be_v that_o that_o god_n give_v yet_o but_o a_o natural_a strength_n and_o to_o make_v account_n of_o this_o to_o be_v as_o my_o righteousness_n and_o to_o tender_v it_o up_o unto_o god_n for_o righteousness_n unto_o life_n here_o be_v a_o legal_a performance_n and_o this_o be_v to_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o mere_a legal_a way_n and_o those_o that_o do_v thus_o will_v find_v that_o this_o will_v be_v a_o very_a great_a burden_n to_o their_o spirit_n it_o be_v a_o burden_n unto_o the_o spirit_n of_o those_o that_o do_v thus_o unto_o the_o spirit_n of_o such_o as_o be_v conscientious_a indeed_o for_o we_o look_v not_o now_o upon_o man_n and_o woman_n as_o perform_v duty_n out_o of_o hypocrisy_n to_o be_v see_v of_o man_n to_o make_v a_o show_n of_o what_o they_o have_v not_o in_o their_o heart_n we_o do_v not_o speak_v of_o such_o but_o we_o speak_v of_o those_o that_o have_v get_v into_o a_o high_a form_n beyond_o such_o kind_n of_o hypocrite_n such_o as_o perform_v duty_n out_o of_o conscience_n and_o yet_o rise_v no_o high_a than_o look_v at_o the_o law_n that_o bind_v they_o to_o those_o duty_n and_o so_o tender_v they_o up_o to_o god_n as_o their_o righteousness_n and_o do_v they_o for_o life_n make_v account_n that_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o must_v bring_v they_o to_o life_n such_o as_o do_v this_o and_o be_v not_o acquaint_v any_o further_a with_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o do_v go_v under_o a_o most_o a_o legal_a way_n and_o his_o performance_n may_v be_v rather_o a_o burden_n than_o that_o which_o shall_v do_v he_o good_a in_o the_o conclusion_n and_o bring_v he_o to_o life_n and_o except_o he_o do_v come_v to_o know_v furhe_a than_o yet_o he_o do_v to_o know_v the_o evangelical_a performance_n of_o duty_n he_o can_v have_v true_a rest_n in_o his_o soul_n now_o this_o as_o the_o other_o be_v a_o point_n of_o great_a consequence_n to_o many_o it_o may_v be_v divers_a that_o read_v this_o book_n may_v not_o so_o clear_o understand_v what_o this_o be_v they_o may_v not_o feel_v any_o such_o thing_n in_o their_o one_o experience_n but_o i_o suppose_v i_o shall_v speak_v to_o some_o even_o to_o their_o heart_n and_o open_v their_o condition_n to_o they_o whereby_o they_o shall_v say_v the_o law_n require_v yet_o i_o may_v do_v some_o outward_a performance_n now_o for_o i_o to_o go_v about_o such_o a_o work_n to_o endeavour_v and_o strive_v to_o do_v all_o the_o work_n that_o the_o law_n require_v not_o only_o the_o outward_a part_n but_o the_o will_v work_v and_o to_o be_v put_v upon_o to_o struggle_v and_o strive_v to_o do_v that_o which_o i_o have_v no_o inward_a principle_n to_o do_v that_o must_v needs_o be_v burdensome_a all_o motion_n of_o nature_n that_o be_v from_o a_o external_a principle_n be_v violent_a and_o so_o tedious_a heavy_a and_o troublesome_a so_o this_o motion_n to_o duty_n that_o come_v not_o from_o a_o inward_a principle_n of_o heart_n but_o be_v mere_o legal_a conscience_n stand_v to_o put_v the_o soul_n upon_o duty_n but_o do_v not_o put_v any_o principle_n into_o the_o soul_n to_o do_v it_o this_o be_v a_o violent_a motion_n and_o those_o that_o have_v the_o experience_n of_o this_o find_v it_o tedious_a heavy_a and_o troublesome_a now_o here_o lie_v the_o burden_n for_o it_o be_v not_o according_a to_o those_o vain_a conceit_n of_o man_n that_o the_o duty_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v do_v because_o they_o have_v no_o inward_a they_o come_v to_o be_v more_o strengthen_v and_o then_o perhaps_o christ_n will_v have_v they_o live_v rather_o by_o faith_n than_o by_o sense_n it_o be_v in_o the_o new_a birth_n as_o in_o the_o birth_n of_o nature_n child_n when_o they_o be_v first_o bear_v they_o shoot_v up_o mighty_o take_v a_o child_n that_o come_v very_o little_a out_o of_o the_o womb_n come_v to_o it_o a_o quarter_n of_o a_o year_n after_o the_o child_n be_v shoot_v up_o a_o great_a deal_n you_o may_v see_v it_o a_o great_a deal_n tall_a and_o big_a every_o limb_n increase_v but_o take_v it_o at_o ten_o year_n old_a and_o it_o grow_v not_o so_o much_o then_o as_o at_o the_o first_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o it_o come_v out_o of_o the_o worm_n womb_n it_o can_v not_o subsist_v if_o nature_n do_v not_o hasten_v to_o strengthen_v itself_o at_o first_o so_o man_n when_o they_o come_v to_o christ_n at_o first_o they_o shoot_v up_o and_o grow_v to_o such_o enlargement_n of_o spirit_n and_o they_o do_v so_o sensible_o perceive_v yea_o and_o other_o do_v so_o sensible_o perceive_v a_o great_a growth_n at_o their_o first_o come_v than_o afterward_o because_o when_o they_o first_o come_v christ_n will_v strengthen_v they_o against_o all_o discouragement_n christ_n will_v use_v you_o tender_o christ_n will_v not_o upbraid_v you_o for_o your_o former_a sin_n and_o say_v what!_o you_o that_o have_v live_v a_o profane_a life_n a_o profaner_n of_o my_o ordinance_n a_o scorner_n at_o my_o way_n and_o at_o my_o people_n christ_n will_v not_o upbraid_v the_o soul_n but_o he_o will_v be_v in_o their_o conscience_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n come_v unto_o they_o except_o you_o do_v this_o you_o may_v fear_v that_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n will_v pursue_v and_o follow_v you_o in_o the_o night_n season_n when_o they_o be_v in_o the_o dark_a they_o be_v fill_v with_o terror_n and_o when_o this_o terror_n come_v upon_o they_o than_o they_o must_v go_v very_o tedious_a so_o it_o be_v with_o those_o that_o be_v mere_o legal_a in_o their_o performance_n they_o find_v little_a or_o nothing_o come_v of_o all_o their_o performance_n and_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v very_o burdensome_a you_o that_o have_v be_v thus_o burden_v know_v this_o very_a text_n concern_v you_o and_o christ_n have_v thought_n of_o you_o and_o call_v you_o to_o himself_o and_o say_v come_v to_o i_o as_o if_o christ_n shall_v say_v certain_o there_o be_v another_o way_n for_o you_o to_o have_v ease_n and_o rest_n to_o your_o soul_n it_o be_v true_a you_o must_v go_v on_o their_o end_n what_o be_v that_o you_o will_v say_v their_o end_n be_v that_o they_o may_v have_v peace_n with_o god_n live_v and_o have_v eternal_a life_n it_o be_v true_a base_a hypocrite_n look_v at_o profit_n many_o will_v make_v a_o show_n of_o religion_n get_v into_o house_n and_o talk_v of_o good_a thing_n that_o they_o may_v get_v good_a cheer_n meat_n and_o drink_n and_o a_o little_a gain_n be_v of_o a_o poor_a and_o unworthy_a spirit_n but_o i_o speak_v of_o those_o that_o be_v grow_v high_a than_o thuâ—_n those_o that_o perform_v duty_n out_o of_o conscience_n and_o yet_o never_o attain_v to_o their_o end_n nor_o never_o will_v attain_v to_o their_o end_n in_o this_o way_n till_o they_o come_v to_o know_v more_o of_o christ_n i_o speak_v of_o such_o as_o desire_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n yet_o in_o this_o way_n of_o legal_a performance_n never_o gain_v this_o rest_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v burdensome_a unto_o they_o the_o 9_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n 9_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o mere_a legal_a way_n they_o go_v on_o and_o perform_v duty_n but_o whether_o god_n accept_v of_o they_o yea_o or_o no_o they_o can_v tell_v do_v they_o they_o must_v but_o whether_o god_n be_v their_o enemy_n or_o their_o friend_n they_o can_v tell_v tender_v up_o duty_n to_o god_n they_o do_v every_o day_n but_o whether_o they_o tender_v they_o up_o to_o a_o enemy_n or_o a_o friend_n they_o do_v not_o know_v sometime_o they_o have_v perhaps_o some_o good_a hope_n that_o god_n accept_v they_o but_o never_o come_v to_o any_o knowledge_n of_o god_n acceptance_n they_o go_v up_o and_o down_o continual_o with_o jealous_a thought_n of_o god_n fear_v leaâ—â—od_a will_v take_v advantage_n of_o they_o at_o the_o last_o this_o musâ—â—e_o burdensome_a many_o poor_a soul_n have_v go_v on_o in_o tâ—â—tion_n one_o seven_o year_n after_o another_o and_o all_o for_o thâ—_n of_o come_v to_o of_o such_o a_o thing_n at_o such_o a_o time_n will_v hinder_v the_o do_v of_o other_o duty_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o but_o yet_o do_v it_o they_o must_v i_o do_v not_o say_v duty_n be_v not_o to_o be_v do_v at_o this_o time_n but_o such_o thing_n as_o conscience_n tell_v they_o be_v good_a they_o be_v hurry_v on_o to_o do_v they_o present_o though_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o weakness_n the_o do_v of_o they_o now_o do_v hinder_v they_o from_o do_v other_o thing_n of_o more_o consequence_n as_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n many_o that_o be_v weak_a yet_o under_o the_o command_n of_o conscience_n and_o be_v in_o a_o legal_a way_n sudden_o there_o come_v such_o a_o thing_n into_o their_o
mind_n i_o must_v spend_v so_o much_o time_n in_o prayer_n say_v conscience_n you_o can_v do_v too_o much_o for_o god_n and_o why_o shall_v you_o not_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n for_o god_n now_o by_o this_o mean_v they_o be_v hurry_v on_o to_o do_v the_o duty_n though_o by_o the_o do_n of_o it_o at_o that_o time_n they_o shall_v hinder_v themselves_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o many_o other_o duty_n afterward_o and_o i_o have_v know_v by_o experience_n many_o that_o have_v be_v greivous_o burden_v this_o way_n what_o they_o present_o apprehend_v to_o have_v any_o good_a in_o it_o that_o they_o think_v they_o must_v do_v although_o they_o by_o that_o be_v hinder_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o many_o other_o duty_n afterward_o whereas_o now_o if_o we_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o liberty_n we_o have_v in_o christ_n we_o will_v be_v able_a to_o satisfy_v ourselves_o this_o way_n though_o i_o be_o weak_a now_o yet_o i_o can_v appeal_v to_o god_n that_o my_o heart_n be_v upright_o and_o though_o i_o do_v forbear_v the_o do_v of_o such_o a_o thing_n that_o in_o its_o own_o nature_n be_v good_a yet_o my_o conscience_n tell_v i_o it_o be_v not_o through_o a_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o what_o may_v glorify_v god_n nor_o because_o i_o will_v neglect_v any_o duty_n that_o god_n will_v have_v i_o do_v but_o because_o i_o know_v through_o my_o weakness_n the_o do_v of_o this_o at_o this_o time_n will_v hinder_v i_o in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n otherways_o therefore_o i_o believe_v that_o god_n will_v accept_v of_o i_o in_o christ_n and_o pardon_v my_o infirmity_n thus_o the_o soul_n can_v do_v that_o be_v in_o christ_n but_o those_o that_o be_v legal_a conscience_n put_v they_o upon_o duty_n without_o regard_v their_o strength_n and_o so_o put_v they_o upon_o strong_a duty_n when_o they_o be_v in_o the_o weak_a capacity_n when_o they_o be_v weak_a conscience_n will_v put_v they_o upon_o the_o strong_a duty_n now_o this_o be_v for_o the_o want_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o their_o liberty_n in_o jesus_n christ_n for_o they_o have_v this_o liberty_n in_o christ_n that_o christ_n accept_v of_o they_o according_a to_o what_o they_o be_v able_a to_o do_v the_o gospel_n hold_v forth_o this_o acceptance_n that_o let_v they_o go_v on_o to_o do_v what_o they_o be_v command_v in_o uprightness_n and_o though_o they_o can_v do_v such_o duty_n because_o god_n know_v i_o do_v not_o know_v whether_o i_o shall_v hold_v out_o or_o no_o i_o be_o afraid_a that_o when_o i_o have_v do_v all_o labour_v and_o toil_v what_o i_o can_v that_o i_o shall_v prove_v a_o apostate_n a_o backslider_n at_o last_o thus_o they_o have_v many_o such_o jealousy_n of_o themselves_o as_o they_o be_v full_a of_o jealousy_n of_o god_n so_o of_o themselves_o they_o be_v afraid_a of_o themselves_o well_o if_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n come_v i_o shall_v fall_v off_o and_o turn_v and_o manifest_a that_o i_o be_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o always_o unsound_a now_o these_o very_a thought_n make_v their_o life_n and_o duty_n burdensome_a unto_o they_o whenas_o one_o that_o have_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o freedom_n of_o the_o gospel_n one_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n he_o can_v go_v on_o well_o though_o i_o be_o but_o weak_a yet_o i_o have_v a_o everlasting_a principle_n that_o will_v hold_v for_o i_o do_v it_o by_o the_o strength_n that_o be_v everlasting_a though_o i_o be_v weak_a yet_o i_o be_o fasten_v to_o that_o that_o be_v everlasting_a i_o be_o carry_v on_o by_o such_o a_o principle_n that_o will_v hold_v on_o to_o everlasting_a life_n and_o oh_o what_o a_o rest_n be_v this_o here_o be_v rest_n indeed_o for_o the_o soul_n to_o know_v that_o though_o i_o be_o weak_a yet_o i_o shall_v hold_v on_o to_o everlasting_a life_n whenas_o one_o that_o be_v legal_a he_o be_v ever_o jealous_a and_o he_o think_v what_o do_v i_o this_o for_o i_o shall_v fall_v off_o at_o last_o and_o so_o go_v on_o heavy_o and_o be_v trouble_v in_o his_o thought_n and_o this_o make_v both_o his_o duty_n and_o his_o life_n burdensome_a still_o i_o say_v christ_n call_v upon_o all_o these_o to_o come_v unto_o he_o still_o there_o be_v a_o rest_n in_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v impossible_a we_o shall_v speak_v of_o all_o these_o thing_n at_o once_o but_o now_o i_o will_v only_o find_v out_o those_o that_o christ_n call_v you_o that_o not_o do_v my_o duty_n that_o do_v hinder_v i_o from_o do_v my_o duty_n whereas_o those_o that_o have_v evangelical_n humiliation_n it_o make_v they_o more_o fit_a to_o do_v duty_n the_o other_o it_o make_v they_o more_o unfit_a their_o heart_n be_v more_o sullen_a fretful_a and_o untoward_a and_o this_o be_v a_o sad_a condition_n that_o not_o only_o they_o fail_v in_o other_o duty_n but_o when_o they_o be_v trouble_v for_o this_o they_o fail_v moâ—e_n first_o they_o fail_v of_o their_o duty_n and_o their_o heart_n be_v harden_v a_o great_a while_n and_o then_o they_o complain_v that_o their_o heart_n be_v harden_v and_o that_o they_o can_v be_v humble_v for_o their_o sin_n after_o this_o complaint_n they_o begin_v to_o be_v trouble_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n when_o they_o be_v trouble_v after_o such_o away_o as_o they_o grow_v sullen_a and_o discontent_a vex_v and_o fret_v of_o themselves_o and_o by_o this_o they_o come_v to_o be_v hinder_v as_o much_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o their_o duty_n as_o by_o the_o hardness_n of_o their_o heart_n before_o some_o be_v hinder_v by_o their_o hardness_n of_o heart_n from_o perform_v of_o duty_n and_o other_o by_o their_o humility_n now_o this_o be_v a_o very_a great_a burden_n you_o may_v some_o of_o you_o find_v it_o in_o your_o own_o experience_n that_o the_o trouble_n of_o your_o heart_n have_v rather_o hinder_v you_o then_o further_v you_o in_o duty_n as_o in_o exodus_fw-la when_o moses_n come_v to_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n the_o text_n say_v they_o do_v not_o harken_v unto_o their_o duty_n only_a conscience_n hale_v they_o to_o it_o and_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o must_v do_v it_o and_o if_o they_o do_v neglect_v it_o conscience_n fly_v in_o their_o face_n and_o tell_v they_o they_o must_v perish_v eternal_o and_o they_o seek_v therefore_o to_o pacify_v their_o conscience_n only_o by_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o by_o their_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n once_o give_v strength_n to_o perform_v duty_n but_o certain_o now_o the_o law_n of_o god_n command_v duty_n but_o give_v no_o strength_n to_o perform_v they_o there_o be_v no_o strength_n enable_v we_o to_o perform_v duty_n until_o the_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n do_v come_v into_o the_o soul_n we_o may_v perform_v the_o outward_a part_n of_o they_o but_o not_o perform_v duty_n in_o such_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v suitable_a to_o our_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o bring_v ease_n and_o quiet_a unto_o our_o soul_n and_o though_o the_o soul_n do_v seek_v to_o get_v denounce_v a_o curse_n against_o he_o that_o do_v not_o continue_v in_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v write_v in_o the_o law_n to_o do_v it_o now_o when_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v seek_v to_o get_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n they_o can_v perform_v duty_n as_o they_o ought_v and_o therefore_o they_o have_v no_o rest_n but_o they_o see_v the_o law_n to_o condemn_v they_o because_o they_o do_v not_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o perfect_a manner_n and_o yet_o they_o think_v they_o must_v go_v on_o and_o do_v as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v i_o but_o still_o conscience_n have_v matter_n to_o accuse_v they_o of_o you_o have_v not_o do_v enough_o you_o still_o come_v short_a and_o though_o you_o do_v some_o duty_n you_o neglect_v other_o duty_n so_o that_o conscience_n have_v they_o at_o advantage_n every_o day_n and_o they_o be_v continual_o under_o the_o bondage_n of_o a_o accuse_v and_o condemn_v conscience_n that_o they_o can_v have_v no_o rest_n to_o their_o soul_n they_o perform_v duty_n but_o question_n with_o themselves_o how_o can_v i_o know_v that_o the_o infinite_a holy_a god_n will_v accept_v of_o what_o i_o do_v and_o although_o they_o may_v get_v quiet_a for_o a_o little_a while_n yet_o conscience_n come_v upon_o they_o again_o and_o disquiet_v they_o and_o cast_v fear_n and_o doubt_n â—to_z their_o soul_n insomuch_o that_o many_o poor_a creature_n have_v go_v seven_o or_o perhaps_o twice_o seven_o year_n under_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n and_o never_o have_v any_o rest_n or_o peace_n and_o yet_o still_o have_v go_v on_o make_v conscience_n of_o their_o way_n but_o withal_o full_a of_o fear_n and_o doubt_n lest_o all_o shall_v not_o be_v well_o with_o they_o at_o last_o the_o three_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n and_o beside_o while_o the_o soul_n go_v on_o to_o seek_v quiet_a and_o rest_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v a_o unsuitableness_n between_o the_o duty_n that_o be_v perform_v and_o the_o heart_n of_o such_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n so_o that_o the_o very_a work_n that_o they_o do_v and_o duty_n they_o perform_v be_v grievous_a and_o tedious_a unto_o they_o ay_o but_o now_o say_v christ_n o_o come_v to_o i_o such_o as_o these_o be_v be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o that_o have_v have_v your_o conscience_n trouble_v and_o have_v desire_v o_o that_o there_o may_v be_v peace_n between_o god_n and_o my_o soul_n that_o i_o may_v have_v assurance_n of_o god_n love_n what_o course_n have_v you_o take_v to_o get_v it_o have_v you_o not_o seek_v to_o bring_v it_o about_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o have_v think_v to_o get_v rest_n and_o peace_n to_o your_o soul_n that_o way_n indeed_o it_o be_v better_a to_o go_v on_o that_o way_n than_o in_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n but_o to_o think_v to_o have_v rest_n and_o peace_n that_o way_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o evil_a in_o it_o than_o you_o be_v aware_a of_o if_o man_n shall_v think_v to_o quiet_v themselves_o that_o way_n and_o thereby_o put_v off_o the_o righteousness_n that_o come_v by_o faith_n they_o may_v come_v to_o be_v harden_v before_o they_o be_v aware_a but_o be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o that_o be_v seek_v rest_n and_o peace_n unto_o your_o soul_n in_o such_o a_o way_n by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n say_v christ_n know_v that_o this_o be_v not_o the_o way_n for_o you_o to_o have_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n it_o be_v true_a you_o must_v abstain_v from_o sin_n and_o perform_v duty_n o_o but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n you_o must_v come_v and_o in_o their_o duty_n but_o mere_o according_a to_o the_o stir_v of_o conscience_n if_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v &_o stir_v then_o they_o be_v careful_a to_o perform_v duty_n but_o if_o conscience_n do_v not_o stir_v they_o they_o be_v careless_a again_o &_o therefore_o those_o that_o do_v perform_v duty_n in_o this_o manner_n you_o shall_v not_o observe_v a_o evenness_n in_o their_o way_n but_o sometime_o they_o be_v very_o strict_a and_o dare_v not_o for_o their_o life_n omit_v any_o duty_n but_o at_o other_o time_n they_o be_v loose_v again_o for_o it_o be_v according_a to_o come_v to_o perform_v duty_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o their_o way_n be_v make_v even_o for_o they_o not_o but_o that_o god_n people_n may_v sometime_o be_v better_a than_o they_o be_v at_o other_o time_n yet_o there_o be_v general_o a_o evenness_n and_o proportion_n between_o their_o action_n the_o six_o misery_n six_o there_o be_v this_o evil_n in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o if_o so_o be_v that_o by_o these_o duty_n their_o conscience_n come_v to_o be_v quiet_v than_o they_o be_v keep_v of_o from_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v no_o people_n more_o keep_v of_o from_o jesus_n christ_n than_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a manner_n and_o have_v quiet_a of_o conscience_n that_o way_n yeâ—_n not_o only_o keep_v from_o christ_n but_o further_o they_o set_v up_o their_o duty_n in_o the_o place_n of_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o to_o be_v their_o very_a justification_n what_o be_v it_o that_o many_o people_n will_v present_v before_o the_o lord_n for_o their_o righteousness_n and_o hope_n of_o heaven_n but_o performance_n of_o such_o and_o such_o duty_n that_o the_o law_n require_v now_o here_o be_v a_o mighty_a mistake_n though_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o obey_v god_n law_n yet_o for_o we_o to_o come_v and_o make_v this_o our_o righteousness_n before_o god_n and_o set_v it_o up_o before_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v our_o interest_n for_o eternal_a life_n this_o be_v to_o put_v jesus_n christ_n out_o of_o his_o office_n and_o make_v our_o own_o duty_n to_o be_v our_o savior_n this_o now_o be_v exceed_o dangerous_a and_o yet_o how_o many_o people_n be_v there_o that_o do_v thus_o and_o therefore_o i_o have_v be_v willing_a to_o be_v the_o large_a in_o this_o point_n because_o it_o be_v not_o a_o argument_n that_o we_o do_v every_o day_n meet_v withal_o and_o also_o because_o i_o will_v have_v many_o who_o conscience_n begin_v to_o be_v enlighten_v and_o much_o trouble_v to_o know_v where_o they_o be_v what_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o their_o trouble_n and_o where_o the_o bottom_n of_o their_o trouble_n lie_v there_o be_v many_o people_n that_o be_v so_o far_o to_o be_v belove_v that_o they_o be_v very_o conscientious_a of_o duty_n and_o abstain_v from_o those_o sin_n that_o other_o live_v in_o and_o perform_v duty_n that_o other_o neglect_v but_o they_o go_v on_o very_o heavy_o and_o sad_o for_o many_o year_n together_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o know_v not_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o trouble_n from_o whence_o their_o trouble_n come_v now_o by_o that_o that_o i_o have_v open_v to_o you_o in_o this_o point_n you_o may_v come_v to_o know_v whence_o all_o your_o trouble_n come_v whence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o you_o have_v go_v on_o in_o that_o sadness_n and_o heaviness_n as_o you_o have_v do_v you_o have_v do_v your_o duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n you_o have_v not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v that_o way_n how_o shall_v we_o be_v ease_v of_o this_o burden_n when_o i_o come_v to_o that_o there_o i_o shall_v show_v in_o some_o measure_n the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n from_o all_o those_o burden_n that_o i_o have_v open_v christ_n will_v not_o have_v we_o omit_v duty_n every_o a_o whit_n the_o more_o but_o in_o christ_n we_o shall_v see_v how_o they_o be_v perform_v but_o i_o have_v go_v on_o just_a in_o this_o legal_a way_n as_o have_v be_v show_v in_o this_o point_n if_o this_o be_v your_o condition_n so_o far_o be_v comfort_n to_o you_o and_o know_v that_o jesus_n christ_n call_v you_o it_o be_v true_a your_o condition_n be_v for_o the_o present_a sad_a yet_o there_o be_v help_v hope_v and_o remedy_n in_o christ_n come_v to_o he_o and_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o give_v you_o rest_v and_o teach_v you_o to_o honour_n god_n that_o shall_v be_v more_o comfort_n to_o your_o soul_n than_o this_o way_n you_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o safe_a way_n and_o a_o speedy_a way_n for_o comfort_n and_o it_o be_v as_o holy_a a_o way_n too_o therefore_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v not_o call_v to_o you_o to_o make_v less_o conscience_n of_o your_o duty_n than_o you_o do_v no_o but_o it_o be_v as_o holy_a a_o way_n and_o a_o more_o safe_a and_o speedy_a way_n than_o that_o now_o you_o be_v in_o christ_n call_v you_o quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v do_v christ_n call_v to_o these_o to_o come_v to_o he_o for_o rest_n as_o if_o he_o do_v approve_v of_o their_o condition_n and_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o ought_v to_o be_v that_o people_n ought_v to_o be_v burden_v by_o these_o legal_a performance_n answ_n there_o be_v some_o of_o the_o burden_n here_o that_o it_o be_v true_a aught_o to_o be_v and_o christ_n approve_v of_o they_o that_o be_v to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o guilt_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o corruption_n etc._n etc._n and_o christ_n call_v these_o as_o approve_v of_o they_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v good_a though_o not_o true_o good_a but_o there_o be_v other_o burden_n that_o be_v upon_o sinner_n that_o christ_n call_v to_o come_v to_o he_o to_o be_v ease_v of_o not_o as_o they_o be_v approve_v of_o by_o christ_n but_o christ_n pity_v they_o and_o have_v compassion_n upon_o those_o that_o be_v under_o those_o burden_n as_o be_v under_o a_o great_a misery_n as_o now_o when_o a_o man_n shall_v make_v conscience_n of_o his_o way_n when_o christ_n shall_v see_v a_o poor_a soul_n to_o make_v conscience_n of_o his_o way_n to_o have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o his_o eternal_a estate_n upon_o he_o to_o labour_n and_o do_v what_o he_o can_v and_o all_o this_o while_n not_o in_o the_o right_a way_n but_o think_v by_o this_o to_o make_v up_o his_o righteousness_n with_o god_n and_o eternal_a life_n christ_n see_v that_o all_o his_o labour_n will_v come_v to_o nothing_o if_o he_o go_v on_o in_o this_o way_n he_o will_v loose_v all_o his_o duty_n and_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o conscience_n he_o make_v of_o holy_a duty_n he_o will_v perish_v at_o last_o except_o he_o come_v to_o understand_v the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o upon_o that_o the_o good_a man_n begin_v to_o weep_v just_o so_o say_v he_o it_o be_v with_o i_o i_o will_v fain_o get_v up_o to_o god_n fain_o will_v have_v communion_n with_o god_n and_o sometime_o i_o be_o get_v up_o to_o god_n but_o straightway_o there_o be_v a_o weight_n that_o pull_v i_o down_o do_v not_o you_o find_v it_o thus_o you_o that_o be_v conversant_a with_o god_n you_o that_o get_v sometime_o alone_o in_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o you_o will_v fain_o have_v your_o heart_n raise_v to_o god_n but_o how_o be_v your_o heart_n bring_v down_o again_o and_o not_o only_o in_o these_o private_a duty_n but_o after_o public_a duty_n a_o day_n of_o fast_v and_o humiliation_n sometime_o oh_o at_o night_n your_o heart_n be_v up_o and_o now_o you_o resolve_v you_o will_v live_v above_o the_o world_n and_o above_o all_o these_o thing_n here_o below_o and_o you_o will_v live_v more_o to_o god_n glory_n but_o how_o be_v your_o heart_n bring_v down_o again_o by_o this_o corrupt_a nature_n that_o be_v in_o you_o iii_o three_o corrupt_a nature_n be_v a_o burden_n because_o it_o afford_v matter_n for_o any_o temptation_n in_o the_o world_n there_o be_v no_o temptation_n to_o any_o kind_n of_o sin_n but_o our_o nature_n afford_v matter_n for_o all_o kind_n of_o temptation_n what_o a_o burden_n be_v this_o if_o a_o ship_n be_v on_o fire_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o other_o ship_n and_o we_o know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o gunpowder_n in_o the_o ship_n that_o be_v on_o fire_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o rest_n will_v not_o he_o that_o owe_v the_o ship_n be_v afraid_a and_o will_v he_o not_o toil_n and_o use_v all_o mean_n he_o can_v that_o the_o fire_n may_v not_o take_v hold_n of_o the_o gunpowder_n i_o compare_v all_o the_o temptation_n to_o sin_n about_o we_o unto_o the_o fire_n now_o we_o be_v compass_v about_o with_o the_o fire_n and_o what_o be_v our_o heart_n in_o they_o there_o be_v matter_n for_o the_o temptation_n to_o take_v upon_o as_o the_o gunpowder_n be_v matter_n for_o the_o fire_n to_o take_v hold_n of_o so_o our_o sinful_a heart_n be_v as_o ready_a to_o take_v upon_o every_o temptation_n as_o that_o be_v now_o be_v not_o this_o a_o great_a burden_n that_o i_o shall_v carry_v about_o i_o in_o my_o heart_n matter_n enough_o to_o entertain_v all_o sin_n any_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n yea_o the_o sin_n of_o blasphemy_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n if_o i_o have_v not_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n to_o restrain_v i_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o the_o sinful_a nature_n of_o man_n steam_n shall_v come_v from_o the_o body_n itself_o one_o may_v have_v some_o unsavoury_a thing_n cast_v upon_o he_o and_o so_o be_v unsavoury_a but_o when_o the_o body_n be_v rot_v and_o that_o cast_v upon_o one_o that_o will_v be_v more_o unsavoury_a so_o it_o be_v here_o may_v be_v the_o devil_n may_v bring_v some_o temptation_n upon_o we_o and_o make_v some_o disturbance_n in_o our_o heart_n i_o but_o there_o be_v that_o in_o our_o heart_n that_o will_v make_v as_o great_a a_o disturbance_n in_o our_o soul_n as_o the_o devil_n can_v v._o last_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o our_o nature_n be_v a_o burden_n in_o this_o respect_n that_o it_o will_v damp_n all_o the_o activity_n of_o our_o grace_n the_o livelyness_n of_o our_o grace_n now_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n make_v it_o distress_n in_o our_o nation_n and_o what_o will_v be_v more_o acceptable_a unto_o we_o than_o this_o to_o hear_v of_o rest_n this_o be_v that_o that_o christ_n do_v promise_n to_o all_o they_o that_o come_v to_o he_o that_o believe_v in_o he_o he_o say_v he_o will_v give_v they_o rest_n before_o i_o come_v to_o open_v this_o gracious_a promise_n which_o be_v exceed_o full_a of_o marrow_n and_o fatness_n as_o we_o shall_v find_v when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o open_n of_o it_o i_o shall_v first_o give_v you_o one_o note_n brief_o from_o the_o connexion_n of_o these_o word_n with_o the_o that_o be_v the_o note_n clear_o from_o the_o connexion_n of_o the_o word_n before_o we_o open_v the_o promise_n i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v say_v he_o if_o you_o come_v to_o i_o in_o that_o christ_n do_v propound_v that_o which_o he_o know_v will_v take_v the_o heart_n of_o sinner_n as_o a_o great_a good_a unto_o they_o to_o draw_v they_o to_o himself_o hence_o i_o say_v the_o note_n it_o clear_v that_o in_o our_o come_n to_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v lawful_a for_o we_o to_o have_v some_o aim_n at_o our_o own_o good_a yea_o not_o only_o lawful_a for_o we_o but_o we_o ought_v so_o to_o do_v for_o we_o be_v to_o look_v upon_o christ_n so_o as_o christ_n propound_v himself_o unto_o we_o not_o only_o lawful_a i_o say_v to_o look_v upon_o christ_n so_o as_o he_o propound_v himself_o to_o we_o but_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n so_o to_o look_v upon_o he_o now_o when_o christ_n propound_v himself_o unto_o we_o as_o a_o object_n to_o draw_v our_o heart_n to_o he_o he_o do_v propound_v himself_o as_o one_o wherein_o our_o soul_n shall_v gain_v abundance_n of_o good_a one_o that_o we_o shall_v get_v much_o by_o now_o though_o it_o be_v true_a we_o shall_v labour_n to_o be_v above_o ourselves_o as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v we_o shall_v labour_n to_o deny_v ourselves_o in_o some_o sense_n yet_o not_o so_o but_o that_o we_o be_v to_o look_v at_o our_o own_o good_a now_o this_o i_o may_v show_v you_o in_o abundance_n of_o scripture_n in_o the_o very_a first_o commission_n that_o jesus_n christ_n give_v unto_o his_o apostle_n after_o his_o resurrection_n to_o go_v and_o preach_v throughout_o the_o world_n he_o say_v unto_o they_o in_o mark_n 16.15_o verse_n go_v you_o into_o all_o the_o world_n and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o every_o creature_n he_o that_o believe_v and_o be_v baptise_a shall_v be_v save_v this_o be_v clear_a that_o christ_n will_v have_v we_o in_o our_o first_o believe_v to_o have_v a_o aim_n at_o our_o own_o good_a and_o so_o soul_n so_o that_o you_o see_v god_n propound_v duty_n together_o with_o promise_n the_o lord_n know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o and_o what_o will_v work_v most_o upon_o we_o and_o therefore_o for_o we_o to_o think_v that_o we_o must_v have_v no_o aim_n at_o all_o of_o any_o good_a to_o ourselves_o in_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o that_o it_o be_v no_o grace_n but_o self-love_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n for_o our_o own_o good_a this_o be_v a_o temptation_n i_o speak_v the_o rather_o this_o point_n because_o i_o know_v how_o useful_a it_o be_v unto_o many_o poor_a soul_n who_o the_o lord_n be_v draw_v unto_o jesus_n christ_n the_o lord_n have_v take_v off_o their_o heart_n from_o sinful_a self_n they_o will_v not_o enjoy_v themselves_o in_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o former_o the_o lord_n have_v make_v they_o willing_a to_o deny_v their_o own_o opinion_n their_o own_o will_n their_o own_o affection_n their_o former_a way_n to_o deny_v themselves_o in_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n so_o as_o to_o prize_v he_o and_o christ_n and_o his_o way_n the_o way_n of_o christ_n more_o than_o they_o prize_v their_o very_a life_n here_o in_o this_o world_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o there_o come_v a_o temptation_n upon_o they_o i_o but_o you_o seek_v christ_n only_o to_o free_v you_o from_o hell_n and_o to_o save_v you_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v but_o self-love_n it_o be_v no_o true_a grace_n because_o that_o you_o aim_v at_o yourselves_o rather_o than_o christ_n the_o devil_n can_v prevail_v with_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v draw_v to_o christ_n thus_o tell_v of_o it_o oh_o but_o you_o prize_v your_o lust_n more_o than_o christ_n or_o you_o prize_v your_o ease_n more_o than_o christ_n or_o you_o prize_v your_o estate_n and_o your_o liberty_n more_o than_o christ_n or_o your_o life_n more_o than_o christ_n if_o so_o be_v that_o the_o devil_n shall_v come_v thus_o and_o tempt_v such_o a_o soul_n can_v in_o some_o measure_n be_v able_a to_o answer_v and_o to_o appeal_v unto_o god_n and_o say_v lord_n thou_o that_o know_v all_o thing_n know_v it_o be_v otherwise_o that_o howsoever_o my_o heart_n heretofore_o go_v after_o my_o lust_n after_o the_o world_n after_o my_o ease_n and_o liberty_n and_o i_o follow_v the_o common_a course_n of_o the_o world_n and_o make_v those_o thing_n to_o be_v my_o great_a good_a and_o comfort_n yet_o lord_n thou_o know_v it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o i_o now_o my_o heart_n be_v set_v for_o christ_n and_o i_o can_v say_v from_o the_o bottom_n of_o my_o soul_n with_o that_o bless_a martyr_n lambert_n none_o but_o christ_n none_o but_o christ_n now_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v get_v thus_o far_o one_o will_v think_v thou_o may_v be_v above_o the_o devil_n and_o come_v to_o get_v assurance_n i_o say_v the_o devil_n though_o you_o be_v take_v off_o thus_o far_o that_o you_o dare_v not_o commit_v any_o know_a sin_n and_o you_o seek_v after_o christ_n more_o than_o your_o estate_n and_o your_o liberty_n yet_o there_o be_v one_o thing_n more_o that_o your_o heart_n be_v not_o take_v off_o from_o you_o do_v not_o prize_n christ_n most_o of_o all_o you_o seek_v christ_n to_o save_v you_o from_o hell_n and_o bring_v you_o to_o heaven_n that_o be_v it_o that_o you_o seek_v christ_n for_o and_o therefore_o i_o know_v your_o heart_n be_v not_o right_a all_o this_o while_n this_o be_v a_o temptation_n that_o seize_v upon_o many_o man_n now_o i_o confess_v it_o be_v a_o temptation_n that_o be_v beyond_o many_o man_n they_o do_v not_o know_v what_o this_o temptation_n be_v that_o i_o prize_v christ_n only_o to_o deliver_v i_o from_o hell_n and_o bring_v i_o to_o heaven_n this_o temptation_n be_v above_o the_o high_a form_n of_o the_o course_n of_o the_o world_n then_o ordinary_a professor_n now_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o text_n thus_o answer_v this_o temptation_n the_o soul_n thus_o answer_v it_o be_v true_a i_o do_v seek_v christ_n to_o save_v i_o from_o hell_n and_o bring_v i_o to_o heaven_n the_o fear_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o the_o great_a god_n under_o which_o i_o see_v myself_o to_o be_v and_o the_o displeasure_n of_o god_n be_v mighty_a upon_o my_o spirit_n the_o lord_n have_v make_v my_o soul_n to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o dreadful_a breach_n that_o sin_n have_v make_v between_o he_o and_o my_o soul_n and_o the_o lord_n have_v cause_v the_o fear_n of_o eternity_n to_o fall_v upon_o my_o soul_n and_o i_o come_v to_o be_v convince_v of_o this_o that_o such_o be_v the_o breach_n between_o god_n and_o as_o the_o mediator_n as_o he_o be_v propound_v in_o the_o word_n in_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v a_o mediator_n between_o god_n and_o mankind_n so_o my_o soul_n make_v after_o he_o and_o close_v with_o he_o and_o what_o can_v the_o devil_n say_v to_o this_o for_o my_o heart_n do_v close_o with_o christ_n in_o the_o way_n that_o christ_n be_v tender_v unto_o i_o in_o the_o gospel_n for_o so_o he_o be_v tender_v god_n himself_o say_v thus_o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o send_v forth_o his_o only_a beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v everlasting_a life_n thus_o god_n set_v forth_o his_o son_n as_o if_o god_n shall_v say_v thus_o be_v it_o know_v unto_o you_o o_o poor_a wretched_a sinful_a creature_n that_o be_v in_o first_o conversion_n do_v ordinary_o make_v use_n of_o the_o creature_n self-love_n but_o it_o be_v of_o self-love_n for_o eternity_n and_o that_o be_v a_o high_a degree_n of_o self-love_n than_o the_o most_o people_n in_o the_o world_n do_v attain_v unto_o some_o people_n in_o the_o world_n they_o love_v themselves_o only_o for_o this_o present_a life_n but_o when_o god_n make_v a_o man_n the_o mediator_n before_o thou_o can_v have_v any_o rest_n even_o in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n itself_o you_o must_v know_v and_o if_o you_o know_v any_o thing_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n you_o must_v know_v this_o that_o though_o god_n be_v a_o infinite_a current_n of_o mercy_n yet_o all_o the_o current_n of_o god_n mercy_n be_v stop_v by_o man_n sin_n so_o as_o it_o can_v only_o be_v open_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o thou_o must_v know_v god_n in_o christ_n and_o you_o must_v know_v how_o you_o come_v unto_o god_n in_o and_o through_o christ_n before_o you_o can_v rest_v upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n this_o be_v that_o which_o do_v undo_v many_o soul_n those_o that_o be_v of_o the_o better_a sort_n they_o think_v to_o rely_v their_o family_n and_o in_o their_o closert_n &_o this_o be_v that_o they_o rest_v in_o but_o the_o rest_n of_o a_o immortal_a soul_n must_v have_v a_o better_a foundation_n than_o this_o than_o all_o the_o duty_n than_o all_o the_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n than_o all_o that_o god_n himself_o work_v in_o they_o it_o must_v be_v somewhat_o without_o they_o that_o must_v be_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o nothing_o wrought_v in_o we_o no_o not_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o we_o can_v be_v rest_n to_o our_o soul_n it_o must_v be_v the_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o a_o mediator_n the_o insufficiency_n of_o the_o rest_n in_o all_o other_o thing_n only_o with_o this_o one_o thing_n know_v this_o that_o that_o heart_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n as_o the_o iron_n be_v with_o the_o loadstone_n can_v never_o be_v quiet_a either_o in_o creature_n comfort_n or_o in_o hope_n of_o mercy_n or_o in_o any_o duty_n or_o performance_n it_o can_v never_o be_v quiet_a till_o it_o get_v union_n with_o jesus_n christ_n just_o as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o needle_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o a_o loadstone_n shake_v it_o which_o way_n you_o will_v it_o will_v never_o be_v at_o rest_n till_o it_o come_v to_o the_o north_n and_o when_o it_o get_v north_n than_o it_o stand_v there_o so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v the_o touch_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n and_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v but_o touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n it_o shake_v be_v full_o of_o fear_n and_o doubt_n and_o offer_v it_o this_o creature_n comfort_n and_o the_o other_o creature_n comfort_n it_o will_v not_o do_v it_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o at_o rest_n but_o now_o when_o there_o this_o hinder_v they_o from_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n because_o they_o find_v quiet_a some_o where_o else_o the_o saint_n they_o be_v trouble_v but_o their_o trouble_n and_o shake_n in_o the_o world_n be_v like_o the_o trouble_n of_o a_o ship_n that_o be_v in_o the_o haven_n at_o shore_n that_o lie_v at_o anchor_n a_o ship_n that_o lie_v at_o anchor_n though_o the_o wave_n toss_v it_o up_o and_o down_o yet_o it_o be_v toss_v up_o and_o down_o at_o anchor_n so_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n for_o all_o the_o world_n between_o all_o the_o trouble_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o the_o trouble_n of_o ungodly_a man_n now_o when_o you_o have_v a_o ship_n at_o sea_n and_o have_v no_o anchor_n and_o the_o storm_n drive_v it_o any_o way_n when_o there_o come_v a_o mighty_a tempest_n christ_n as_o it_o have_v reference_n to_o deliverance_n from_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n consist_v in_o this_o that_o now_o all_o the_o duty_n that_o god_n require_v at_o thy_o hand_n be_v require_v in_o a_o sweet_a and_o a_o gentle_a way_n the_o service_n that_o god_n require_v be_v require_v of_o thou_o in_o a_o gentle_a and_o a_o love_a way_n god_n indeed_o come_v and_o require_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o the_o law_n require_v of_o thou_o i_o but_o he_o come_v to_o draw_v thy_o soul_n with_o the_o cord_n of_o love_n we_o beseech_v you_o say_v the_o apostle_n by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n rom._n 12.1_o that_o you_o give_v up_o yourselves_o a_o live_a sacrifice_n holy_a and_o acceptable_a unto_o god_n which_o be_v your_o reasonable_a service_n we_o beseech_v you_o by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n now_o the_o bondslave_n that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n they_o have_v not_o duty_n require_v of_o they_o by_o such_o cord_n and_o bond_n of_o love_n but_o if_o thou_o love_n any_o consolation_n such_o kind_n of_o argument_n be_v use_v to_o they_o and_o be_v it_o that_o we_o preach_v only_o to_o believer_n these_o kind_n of_o argument_n be_v only_o necessary_a and_o it_o become_v those_o that_o be_v draw_v by_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v draw_v by_o such_o argument_n and_o it_o be_v a_o good_a argument_n that_o your_o soul_n be_v draw_v by_o the_o power_n of_o but_o know_v this_o that_o no_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n be_v accept_v but_o such_o as_o be_v join_v with_o the_o presentation_n of_o the_o sorrow_n of_o christ_n unto_o the_o father_n now_o what_o a_o that_o come_v from_o the_o law_n they_o be_v trouble_v but_o yet_o there_o remain_v much_o hardness_n in_o their_o heart_n much_o peevishness_n and_o frowardness_n against_o god_n and_o against_o man_n you_o shall_v find_v in_o many_o people_n who_o have_v trouble_v of_o conscience_n yet_o there_o be_v much_o peevishness_n and_o frowardness_n in_o they_o against_o god_n and_o against_o man_n now_o when_o you_o see_v this_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o people_n manifest_v in_o their_o expression_n way_n and_o conversation_n remember_v the_o stone_n that_o you_o see_v upon_o pavement_n in_o wet_a wether_n they_o give_v and_o may_v be_v water_n trickle_v down_o from_o they_o and_o yet_o they_o remain_v hard_o still_o but_o now_o when_o the_o gospel_n come_v it_o do_v not_o only_o cause_v some_o sorrow_n but_o the_o heart_n melt_v and_o this_o be_v accept_v as_o very_o precious_a before_o god_n and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o we_o have_v in_o scripture_n so_o many_o expression_n of_o god_n high_a esteem_n of_o break_a heart_n and_o contrite_a spirit_n and_o how_o god_n look_v at_o they_o he_o that_o dwell_v on_o high_a yet_o look_v to_o he_o that_o be_v of_o a_o humble_a and_o contrite_a spirit_n and_o that_o tremble_v at_o his_o word_n and_o let_v i_o speak_v this_o one_o word_n for_o the_o ease_n of_o they_o that_o be_v trouble_v and_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n those_o tear_n that_o come_v from_o thy_o melt_a heart_n through_o the_o
now_o this_o be_v a_o special_a thing_n to_o be_v speak_v of_o in_o this_o point_n how_o believer_n shall_v improve_v this_o and_o what_o it_o be_v that_o they_o shall_v learn_v by_o this_o and_o how_o helpful_a this_o will_v be_v to_o they_o and_o something_o for_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o those_o that_o doubt_v that_o they_o be_v not_o believer_n but_o we_o can_v do_v all_o thing_n at_o once_o this_o shall_v suffice_v for_o the_o present_a the_o mere_a present_v to_o your_o soul_n what_o rest_v there_o be_v in_o christ_n from_o the_o load_n of_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n from_o the_o load_n that_o many_o feel_v to_o be_v upon_o their_o soul_n through_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n chap._n xxxi_o contain_v divers_a consequence_n from_o the_o rest_n believer_n have_v from_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n and_o lesson_n they_o be_v teach_v from_o thence_o to_o proceed_v now_o there_o be_v divers_a thing_n that_o follow_v from_o hence_o from_o the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n from_o the_o burden_n and_o load_n of_o the_o law_n i_o shall_v speak_v very_o brief_o of_o they_o and_o so_o pass_v to_o what_o remain_v in_o the_o next_o burden_n and_o rest_n to_o that_o from_o hence_o follow_v exceed_v help_n unto_o believer_n against_o divers_a temptation_n that_o do_v exceed_o trouble_v the_o peace_n and_o rest_n of_o their_o soul_n if_o they_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o law_n in_o those_o several_a respect_n as_o at_o large_a have_v be_v open_v to_o you_o 1._o then_o first_o from_o the_o meditation_n of_o this_o their_o delivery_n they_o may_v have_v rest_n and_o ease_n from_o this_o temptation_n that_o because_o of_o some_o imperfection_n weakness_n and_o distemper_n of_o heart_n and_o sin_n that_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o therefore_o they_o have_v no_o interest_n at_o all_o in_o christ_n they_o have_v no_o interest_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n because_o of_o that_o the_o strength_n of_o this_o temptation_n can_v stand_v with_o the_o right_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n as_o deliver_v from_o the_o law_n if_o christ_n deliver_v from_o the_o law_n than_o a_o interest_n in_o christ_n may_v stand_v though_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o keep_v the_o law_n yea_o and_o further_o we_o know_v this_o that_o it_o be_v usual_a with_o believer_n upon_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n in_o any_o thing_n to_o call_v their_o estate_n into_o question_n all_o into_o question_n certain_o if_o we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n not_o by_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n not_o to_o be_v cast_v by_o the_o law_n we_o will_v never_o be_v so_o ready_a to_o call_v all_o into_o question_n upon_o any_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n that_o our_o conscience_n tell_v we_o we_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o 2._o further_o this_o will_v marvellous_o help_v against_o this_o temptation_n likewise_o that_o god_n accept_v not_o of_o what_o we_o do_v because_o it_o be_v not_o perfect_a because_o it_o be_v not_o complete_a when_o believer_n look_v upon_o their_o duty_n that_o they_o do_v perform_v and_o see_v so_o many_o imperfection_n in_o they_o they_o dare_v not_o tender_v they_o up_o to_o god_n god_n be_v a_o infinite_a holy_a just_a god_n and_o they_o be_v ashamed_a of_o what_o they_o have_v do_v so_o as_o they_o dare_v not_o tender_v they_o up_o to_o god_n now_o the_o right_a knowledge_n of_o our_o deliverance_n member_n thou_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o be_v once_o bring_v into_o the_o covenant_n that_o will_v uphold_v thou_o though_o thou_o be_v weak_a when_o thousand_o of_o other_o that_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o natural_a ability_n and_o common_a gift_n of_o god_n spirit_n yet_o be_v not_o bring_v under_o this_o covenant_n may_v vanish_v yea_o have_v they_o the_o strength_n of_o a_o angel_n yet_o if_o not_o bring_v under_o this_o covenant_n of_o grace_n make_v with_o believer_n in_o christ_n they_o will_v fall_v and_o come_v to_o nothing_o whenas_o the_o weak_a believer_n that_o have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n through_o christ_n and_o not_o through_o the_o law_n such_o a_o one_o shall_v stand_v and_o not_o fall_v now_o the_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o law_n in_o christ_n will_v mighty_o help_v believer_n against_o these_o temptation_n and_o divers_a other_o i_o know_v nothing_o that_o do_v help_v believer_n more_o than_o ill_a use_n in_o hear_v the_o deliverance_n from_o the_o law_n yet_o they_o must_v not_o miss_v their_o portion_n i_o say_v believer_n be_v hereby_o teach_v how_o to_o receive_v the_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n you_o hear_v dreadful_a threat_n of_o the_o law_n out_o of_o god_n word_n against_o sin_n now_o how_o shall_v thou_o entertain_v these_o threat_n the_o way_n be_v this_o when_o thou_o hear_v such_o threat_n know_v that_o god_n by_o this_o will_v have_v thou_o to_o consider_v what_o his_o mercy_n be_v in_o deliver_v of_o thou_o from_o what_o thou_o have_v deserve_v god_n will_v have_v thou_o to_o consider_v what_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n be_v in_o itself_o and_o to_o consider_v what_o christ_n have_v do_v god_n will_v have_v thou_o to_o be_v drive_v to_o christ_n by_o this_o mean_n to_o see_v thy_o need_n of_o christ_n to_o bless_v his_o name_n for_o christ_n and_o to_o prize_n christ_n who_o have_v deliver_v thou_o from_o these_o threaten_n a_o believer_n when_o he_o hear_v the_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n be_v like_o a_o man_n that_o stand_v upon_o the_o shore_n when_o there_o be_v a_o grievous_a tempest_n and_o storm_n he_o see_v the_o wave_n rise_v high_a hear_v christ_n render_v god_n very_o amiable_a and_o loâ—ely_o unto_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o christian_a render_v god_n the_o father_n as_o his_o father_n or_o her_o father_n for_o so_o christ_n say_v i_o go_v to_o my_o father_n and_o your_o father_n to_o look_v upon_o god_n not_o only_o as_o a_o father_n but_o our_o father_n as_o be_v the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n so_o believer_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n look_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o father_n in_o a_o double_a relation_n he_o be_v my_o father_n he_o have_v beget_v i_o a_o new_a to_o himself_o and_o so_o he_o be_v my_o father_n he_o be_v my_o father_n he_o have_v adopt_v i_o to_o be_v his_o child_n but_o he_o be_v the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n too_o and_o christ_n be_v i_o two_o so_o that_o i_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o fatherhood_n as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v as_o the_o father_n of_o christ_n i_o go_v to_o my_o father_n and_o your_o father_n so_o when_o believer_n come_v to_o tender_v up_o any_o service_n to_o god_n as_o a_o duty_n they_o come_v to_o god_n as_o their_o father_n and_o as_o to_o the_o father_n of_o their_o redeemer_n too_o now_o this_o bring_v a_o mighty_a deal_n of_o ease_n unto_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n there_o be_v between_o a_o father_n call_v the_o child_n to_o he_o and_o a_o rigid_a severe_a master_n or_o judge_v call_v of_o one_o to_o he_o when_o the_o child_n hear_v that_o his_o father_n call_v he_o he_o run_v and_o love_v to_o be_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o his_o father_n but_o when_o one_o say_v to_o a_o servant_n your_o master_n call_v you_o he_o know_v not_o whether_o he_o be_v call_v to_o be_v beat_v with_o stripe_n or_o no._n this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o legal_a performance_n and_o evangelical_a those_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n when_o christ_n call_v they_o to_o duty_n you_o must_v go_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o your_o must_v go_v to_o prayer_n what_o be_v that_o but_o come_v you_o must_v go_v before_o your_o father_n and_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o your_o father_n the_o father_n of_o your_o redeemer_n call_v you_o to_o have_v communion_n with_o he_o &_o how_o do_v your_o heart_n spring_n to_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o such_o a_o father_n so_o that_o christ_n render_v they_o lovely_a to_o his_o father_n and_o so_o deliver_v they_o from_o the_o burden_n that_o they_o be_v under_o in_o legal_a performance_n second_o in_o christ_n believer_n when_o they_o perform_v duty_n they_o do_v not_o tender_v they_o up_o unto_o god_n as_o satisfactory_a for_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v past_a but_o mere_o to_o be_v testimony_n of_o their_o love_n and_o thankfulness_n for_o what_o they_o have_v receive_v now_o duty_n be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o easy_o do_v this_o way_n then_o another_o it_o be_v true_a they_o will_v gather_v argument_n from_o their_o former_a neglect_n to_o stir_v they_o up_o to_o do_v the_o more_o i_o but_o now_o they_o be_v not_o call_v upon_o to_o their_o duty_n to_o make_v god_n amends_o and_o satisfy_v for_o what_o be_v pass_v for_o that_o will_v be_v a_o burden_n for_o such_o as_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n and_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o satisfy_v god_n but_o only_o by_o do_v so_o much_o the_o more_o by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o they_o have_v neglect_v heretofore_o i_o have_v neglect_v god_n all_o the_o time_n of_o my_o youth_n and_o now_o conscience_n begin_v to_o be_v awake_v and_o tell_v i_o i_o must_v serve_v god_n and_o perform_v duty_n and_o i_o have_v need_n be_v more_o diligent_a now_o that_o i_o may_v make_v up_o and_o satisfy_v for_o what_o i_o have_v neglect_v before_o now_o when_o we_o perform_v duty_n in_o this_o way_n they_o be_v very_o burdensome_a as_o suppose_v a_o man_n have_v run_v in_o debt_n and_o he_o be_v set_v up_o in_o a_o trade_n i_o but_o whatsoever_o he_o get_v it_o must_v be_v to_o satisfy_v what_o debt_n he_o be_v run_v out_o in_o before_o this_o must_v make_v he_o go_v on_o in_o much_o heaviness_n he_o think_v that_o whatsoever_o he_o get_v must_v go_v to_o satisfy_v what_o he_o have_v run_v into_o before_o but_o now_o take_v another_o man_n that_o have_v run_v into_o arrearage_n and_o have_v a_o friend_n a_o kinsman_n that_o come_v and_o lay_v down_o all_o the_o debt_n that_o he_o owe_v and_o give_v he_o a_o stock_n &_o say_v now_o you_o be_v a_o freeman_n once_o again_o go_v on_o &_o whatever_o you_o get_v shall_v be_v for_o yourself_o this_o man_n go_v on_o a_o great_a dealemore_n lively_a than_o the_o other_o just_o thus_o it_o be_v between_o the_o conscience_n of_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n and_o the_o conscience_n of_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o evangelical_a way_n one_o that_o be_v legal_a conscience_n tell_v he_o of_o such_o arrearage_n that_o he_o have_v run_v into_o with_o god_n and_o whatever_o he_o can_v do_v for_o time_n to_o come_v be_v too_o little_a to_o satisfy_v for_o what_o he_o have_v neglect_v before_o now_o conscience_n put_v he_o upon_o it_o do_v he_o must_v serve_v he_o must_v obey_v he_o must_v i_o but_o he_o do_v it_o with_o no_o heart_n at_o all_o i_o work_v and_o i_o obey_v &_o i_o do_v but_o whether_o this_o will_v make_v up_o the_o arrearage_n for_o what_o be_v past_a i_o do_v not_o know_v now_o a_o believer_n perform_v obedience_n but_o it_o be_v upon_o other_o term_n christ_n come_v and_o lay_v down_o a_o price_n and_o discharge_v he_o of_o all_o former_a arrearage_n and_o put_v a_o stock_n of_o grace_n into_o the_o heart_n and_o say_v unto_o he_o now_o live_v and_o employ_v this_o your_o stock_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o trade_n with_o it_o get_v more_o comfort_n and_o more_o grace_n with_o it_o and_o you_o shall_v have_v the_o benefit_n and_o the_o good_a of_o every_o holy_a duty_n that_o you_o perform_v the_o good_a and_o benefit_n shall_v come_v to_o your_o soul_n now_o such_o a_o soul_n go_v unto_o duty_n in_o a_o cheerful_a way_n and_o they_o be_v no_o burden_n at_o all_o to_o it_o because_o he_o perform_v they_o not_o for_o satisfaction_n of_o any_o arrearage_n behind_o
but_o now_o he_o trade_v for_o himself_o and_o every_o day_n he_o get_v and_o get_v and_o get_v for_o himself_o that_o be_v another_o way_n how_o christ_n give_v rest_n unto_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o can_v have_v little_a heart_n to_o this_o know_v what_o god_n be_v and_o how_o they_o have_v offend_v god_n and_o provoke_v he_o as_o thus_o suppose_v a_o malefactor_n that_o have_v wrong_v the_o king_n he_o must_v go_v into_o his_o presence_n and_o petition_n but_o he_o have_v no_o body_n to_o go_v with_o he_o and_o no_o body_n to_o join_v with_o he_o to_o tender_v up_o his_o petition_n but_o he_o must_v go_v himself_o now_o he_o go_v with_o no_o heart_n in_o the_o world_n with_o no_o encouragement_n indeed_o he_o must_v go_v there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n to_o save_v his_o life_n he_o must_v die_v else_o but_o go_v so_o alone_o and_o have_v none_o to_o help_v he_o he_o go_v very_o heavy_o but_o now_o suppose_v another_o that_o be_v to_o go_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o a_o king_n and_o the_o king_n dear_a and_o only_a son_n shall_v take_v he_o by_o the_o hand_n and_o say_v come_v i_o will_v go_v with_o thou_o and_o what_o have_v thou_o here_o a_o petition_n come_v give_v it_o i_o and_o i_o will_v present_v it_o to_o my_o father_n and_o i_o will_v get_v it_o grant_v o_o how_o merry_o and_o cheerful_o do_v he_o go_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o presence_n alone_o christ_n take_v you_o by_o the_o hand_n and_o carry_v you_o into_o the_o presence_n of_o your_o father_n and_o those_o poor_a petition_n and_o break_a prayer_n that_o you_o and_o it_o do_v not_o go_v on_o before_o he_o and_o he_o spend_v his_o strength_n and_o get_v nothing_o for_o the_o present_a by_o his_o work_n he_o quick_o grow_v weary_a but_o now_o if_o a_o man_n be_v do_v a_o work_n that_o the_o more_o strength_n he_o spend_v the_o more_o he_o get_v the_o more_o his_o strength_n be_v enlarge_v the_o more_o renew_v and_o never_o get_v more_o strength_n then_o when_o he_o be_v spend_v of_o strength_n and_o that_o when_o he_o be_v at_o work_n he_o receive_v in_o sweetness_n by_o it_o sure_o this_o man_n will_v go_v on_o in_o the_o work_n he_o may_v work_v strength_n by_o reason_n of_o cold_a but_o when_o you_o be_v at_o work_n and_o you_o begin_v to_o be_v warm_a your_o strength_n come_v in_o so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o christian_a when_o he_o begin_v to_o perform_v duty_n it_o may_v be_v he_o be_v dull_a dead_a and_o the_o like_a but_o let_v he_o go_v on_o in_o the_o duty_n and_o then_o strength_n will_v come_v in_o i_o appeal_v to_o many_o of_o you_o that_o have_v perform_v duty_n you_o have_v go_v to_o do_v a_o duty_n and_o you_o have_v be_v dull_a and_o unfit_a for_o it_o and_o you_o have_v be_v ready_a to_o let_v it_o alone_o thereupon_o well_o but_o conscience_n put_v you_o upon_o it_o and_o you_o must_v do_v it_o now_o when_o you_o be_v in_o the_o duty_n have_v not_o christ_n come_v in_o and_o have_v not_o the_o strength_n of_o christ_n come_v in_o to_o enable_v you_o to_o do_v the_o duty_n that_o you_o never_o can_v imagine_v it_o which_o for_o ever_o may_v be_v a_o encouragement_n to_o you_o to_o go_v on_o in_o the_o duty_n and_o to_o avoid_v that_o temptation_n never_o to_o neglect_v the_o duty_n from_o any_o unfitness_n to_o the_o duty_n for_o when_o you_o be_v at_o the_o duty_n then_o come_v in_o strength_n from_o christ_n to_o perform_v the_o duty_n for_o you_o can_v expect_v strength_n to_o come_v in_o before_o you_o come_v to_o the_o duty_n but_o up_o and_o be_v do_v and_o then_o strength_n will_v come_v in_o yea_o and_o the_o more_o duty_n you_o do_v the_o more_o strength_n will_v come_v in_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o a_o godly_a man_n though_o he_o may_v be_v weary_a in_o duty_n yet_o he_o can_v never_o be_v weary_a in_o do_v of_o duty_n he_o may_v see_v a_o difference_n between_o himself_o and_o carnal_a man_n take_v a_o godly_a man_n though_o he_o may_v be_v weary_a in_o duty_n yet_o he_o can_v never_o be_v weary_a of_o duty_n whereas_o it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o the_o strength_n of_o a_o natural_a conscience_n those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o the_o strength_n of_o a_o natural_a conscience_n be_v weary_a in_o work_v as_o some_o tool_n you_o know_v will_v wear_v in_o the_o use_n but_o other_o the_o more_o you_o use_v they_o the_o more_o bright_a and_o better_o they_o will_v grow_v so_o it_o be_v with_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o the_o strength_n of_o a_o natural_a conscience_n they_o will_v wear_v away_o and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o they_o leave_v they_o off_o but_o one_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n the_o more_o he_o do_v the_o more_o he_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o do_v and_o therefore_o christian_n let_v that_o be_v a_o encouragement_n to_o you_o the_o more_o you_o do_v the_o more_o you_o shall_v be_v enable_v to_o do_v he_o that_o have_v five_o talent_n and_o use_v forth_o and_o go_v to_o it_o again_o and_o spend_v half_a a_o day_n or_o a_o whole_a day_n together_o in_o study_v meditate_v &_o write_v and_o see_v if_o you_o do_v not_o find_v it_o more_o tedious_a and_o
tiresome_a to_o the_o flesh_n than_o any_o other_o work_n but_o now_o scholar_n though_o it_o be_v tiresome_a to_o the_o flesh_n they_o can_v go_v on_o and_o make_v it_o easy_a to_o they_o why_o because_o they_o find_v sweetness_n in_o their_o work_n it_o be_v not_o with_o they_o as_o with_o â—ther_a man_n other_o man_n work_v that_o they_o may_v have_v wage_n afterward_o but_o all_o the_o while_o they_o be_v about_o their_o work_n they_o have_v truth_n come_v in_o and_o heavenly_a notion_n come_v in_o to_o they_o while_o they_o be_v about_o it_o and_o so_o make_v the_o work_n easy_a unto_o they_o this_o be_v happiness_n of_o a_o christian_n that_o the_o while_o he_o be_v in_o his_o work_n the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n shine_v upon_o he_o and_o there_o be_v sweetness_n come_v rest_n of_o spirit_n in_o performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n do_v appear_v there_o be_v much_o more_o to_o be_v say_v in_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o chapter_n when_o it_o be_v say_v that_o christ_n yoke_n be_v easy_a and_o his_o burden_n light_n which_o if_o god_n give_v opportunity_n we_o shall_v come_v unto_o applic_n i._o now_o from_o all_o this_o first_o here_o you_o may_v see_v the_o happiness_n of_o a_o christian_a you_o do_v not_o think_v that_o a_o christian_n be_v happy_a here_o but_o he_o shall_v not_o have_v only_a heaven_n hereafter_o but_o his_o way_n to_o world_n and_o of_o 〈◊〉_d can_v disturb_v the_o peace_n and_o rest_n of_o a_o christian_n ii_o hence_o we_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o true_a believer_n do_v persevere_v you_o hear_v oftentimes_o persevere_v yes_o certain_o one_o that_o be_v once_o come_v to_o christ_n will_v not_o go_v from_o he_o again_o why_o because_o there_o be_v so_o much_o rest_n in_o holy_a duty_n it_o be_v true_a those_o that_o be_v draw_v to_o holy_a duty_n they_o will_v not_o abide_v as_o it_o be_v say_v the_o son_n abide_v in_o the_o house_n but_o a_o servant_n abide_v not_o always_o in_o the_o house_n so_o such_o as_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o will_v be_v go_v they_o will_v not_o abide_v but_o now_o one_o that_o be_v come_v into_o christ_n and_o have_v a_o sonlike_a disposition_n he_o continue_v as_o we_o say_v in_o philosophy_n no_o violent_a thing_n or_o motion_n be_v perpetual_a and_o indeed_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n a_o hundred_o to_o one_o but_o they_o will_v prove_v apostate_n at_o last_o but_o one_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n will_v continue_v and_o hold_v out_o unto_o the_o end_n iii_o the_o main_a use_n of_o all_o be_v to_o stir_v up_o the_o heart_n of_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a to_o know_v what_o the_o gospel_n mean_v to_o exercise_v much_o faith_n in_o christ_n that_o they_o may_v have_v much_o make_v it_o more_o spiritual_a more_o plentiful_a and_o more_o acceptable_a and_o those_o duty_n be_v very_o please_v unto_o the_o lord_n chap._n xxxvi_o show_v the_o rest_n from_o the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n to_o be_v sanctification_n and_o that_o to_o be_v a_o great_a rest_n lay_v open_a in_o six_o particular_n 1._o it_o be_v the_o right_a temper_n of_o the_o heart_n 2._o in_o it_o to_o show_v it_o now_o in_o the_o rest_n that_o the_o soul_n have_v in_o sanctification_n because_o it_o turn_v all_o thing_n to_o good_a six_o and_o last_o sanctification_n be_v a_o rest_n to_o the_o soul_n because_o indeed_o it_o be_v the_o begin_n of_o glory_n it_o be_v but_o the_o begin_n of_o heaven_n and_o we_o be_v in_o heaven_n there_o be_v nothing_o but_o rest_n there_o be_v peace_n and_o rest_n in_o heaven_n sanctification_n be_v glorification_n begin_v and_o therefore_o rest_v unto_o the_o soul_n this_o now_o be_v the_o first_o particular_a i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n that_o be_v sanctification_n but_o in_o a_o further_a degree_n efficient_o so_o as_o our_o sanctification_n be_v from_o he_o and_o it_o be_v he_o that_o work_v it_o in_o we_o and_o uphold_v it_o in_o we_o the_o beginning_n and_o the_o progress_n of_o our_o sanctification_n it_o be_v from_o he_o as_o well_o as_o merit_v by_o he_o for_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o christ_n have_v lay_v down_o his_o life_n to_o merit_v of_o god_n the_o father_n as_o well_o sanctification_n as_o justification_n or_o glorification_n christ_n have_v not_o only_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o to_o merit_v the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n to_o purchase_v that_o from_o god_n to_o save_v we_o from_o hell_n but_o it_o be_v a_o special_a end_n of_o christ_n lay_v down_o his_o life_n to_o merit_v our_o be_v set_v at_o liberty_n from_o the_o bondage_n of_o our_o sin_n our_o deliverance_n from_o corruption_n the_o renew_n of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o our_o soul_n for_o the_o present_a which_o be_v that_o indeed_o may_v cause_v we_o to_o prize_v holiness_n somewhat_o more_o than_o we_o have_v do_v we_o must_v not_o look_v upon_o holiness_n as_o a_o duty_n that_o we_o must_v be_v holy_a and_o as_o a_o
