the_o two_o spiritual_a power_n of_o our_o soul_n by_o the_o one_o whereof_o we_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o grace_n holiness_n and_o obedience_n in_o this_o life_n and_o by_o the_o other_o of_o eternal_a blessedness_n and_o glory_n both_o these_o namely_o faith_n and_o sight_n the_o one_o in_o this_o life_n the_o other_o in_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v have_v the_o same_o immediate_a object_n for_o they_o be_v the_o ability_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o go_v forth_o unto_o and_o to_o embrace_v their_o object_n now_o this_o object_n of_o they_o both_o be_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n learned_a christ_n jesus_n chap._n xiii_o the_o second_o difference_n between_o our_o behold_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n by_o faith_n in_o this_o world_n and_o by_o sight_n in_o heaven_n faith_n any_o thing_n at_o a_o great_a distance_n see_v it_o imperfect_o and_o the_o least_o interposition_n or_o motion_n take_v it_o quite_o out_o of_o his_o sight_n so_o be_v it_o with_o our_o faith_n in_o this_o matter_n whence_o sometime_o we_o can_v have_v little_a sometime_o no_o sight_n at_o all_o of_o the_o glory_n of_o christ_n by_o it_o and_o this_o give_v we_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v another_o difference_n between_o faith_n and_o sight_n now_o although_o the_o consideration_n hereof_o may_v seem_v a_o kind_n of_o diversion_n from_o our_o present_a argument_n yet_o i_o choose_v to_o insist_v upon_o it_o that_o i_o may_v evidence_n the_o reason_n whence_o it_o be_v that_o many_o have_v so_o little_a experience_n of_o the_o thing_n whereof_o we_o have_v treat_v that_o they_o find_v so_o little_a of_o reality_n or_o power_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o this_o grace_n or_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o duty_n for_o it_o will_v appear_v in_o the_o issue_n that_o the_o whole_a defect_n be_v admire_v in_o his_o patience_n that_o on_o the_o account_n of_o our_o unkindness_n and_o woeful_a negligence_n herein_o he_o have_v not_o only_o withdraw_v himself_o at_o season_n but_o that_o he_o have_v not_o utter_o depart_v from_o we_o now_o he_o know_v that_o those_o with_o who_o he_o have_v be_v gracious_o present_a who_o have_v have_v view_v of_o his_o glory_n although_o they_o have_v not_o value_v the_o mercy_n and_o privilege_n of_o it_o as_o they_o ought_v yet_o can_v they_o not_o bear_v a_o sense_n of_o his_o absence_n and_o his_o hide_v himself_o from_o they_o by_o this_o therefore_o will_v he_o awake_v they_o unto_o a_o diligent_a enquiry_n after_o he_o upon_o the_o discovery_n of_o his_o absence_n and_o such_o a_o distance_n of_o his_o glory_n from_o they_o as_o their_o faith_n can_v reach_v unto_o it_o they_o become_v like_o the_o dove_n of_o the_o valley_n all_o of_o they_o mourn_v every_o one_o for_o his_o iniquity_n and_o do_v stir_v up_o 7_o 8._o and_o in_o these_o inquiry_n there_o be_v such_o a_o exercise_n of_o faith_n and_o love_n though_o it_o may_v be_v act_v themselves_o most_o in_o sigh_n and_o groan_n as_o be_v acceptable_a and_o well_o please_v to_o he_o we_o be_v like_o he_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o prophet_n that_o speak_v unto_o ahab_n who_o have_v one_o commit_v unto_o he_o to_o keep_v affirm_v that_o whilst_o he_o be_v busy_a here_o and_o there_o he_o be_v go_v christ_n commit_v himself_o unto_o we_o and_o we_o ought_v careful_o to_o keep_v his_o presence_n i_o hold_v he_o say_v
be_v the_o most_o bless_a mean_n of_o exciting_a all_o our_o grace_n spiritualize_v all_o our_o affection_n and_o transform_v our_o mind_n into_o his_o likeness_n and_o if_o we_o have_v not_o another_o and_o that_o a_o more_o excellent_a way_n of_o behold_v he_o than_o they_o have_v who_o behold_v he_o as_o they_o suppose_v in_o image_n and_o crucifix_n they_o will_v seem_v to_o have_v the_o advantage_n of_o we_o for_o their_o mind_n will_v real_o be_v affect_v with_o somewhat_o we_o with_o nothing_o at_o all_o and_o by_o the_o pretence_n thereof_o they_o inveigle_v the_o carnal_a affection_n of_o man_n ignorant_a of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o become_v their_o proselyte_n for_o have_v live_v it_o may_v be_v a_o long_a time_n without_o any_o the_o least_o experience_n of_o a_o sensible_a impression_n on_o their_o mind_n or_o a_o transform_a power_n from_o the_o representation_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o gospel_n upon_o their_o very_a first_o religious_a devout_a application_n unto_o these_o image_n they_o find_v their_o thought_n exercise_v their_o mind_n affect_v and_o some_o present_a change_n make_v upon_o they_o but_o there_o be_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o person_n of_o david_n and_o a_o image_n with_o a_o bolster_n of_o goat_n hair_n though_o the_o one_o be_v lay_v in_o the_o room_n and_o place_n of_o the_o other_o and_o there_o be_v so_o between_o christ_n and_o a_o image_n though_o the_o one_o be_v put_v into_o the_o place_n of_o the_o other_o neither_o do_v these_o thing_n serve_v unto_o any_o other_o end_n but_o to_o divert_v the_o mind_n of_o man_n from_o faith_n and_o love_n to_o christ_n give_v they_o some_o such_o satisfaction_n in_o the_o room_n of_o they_o as_o that_o their_o carnal_a affection_n do_v cleave_v unto_o their_o idol_n and_o indeed_o it_o do_v belong_v unto_o the_o wisdom_n of_o faith_n or_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o spiritual_a light_n to_o discern_v and_o judge_v between_o the_o work_n of_o natural_a affection_n towards_o spiritual_a object_n on_o undue_a motive_n by_o undue_a mean_n with_o indirect_a end_n wherein_o all_o papal_a devotion_n consist_v and_o the_o spiritual_a exercise_n of_o grace_n in_o those_o affection_n due_o fix_v on_o spiritual_a object_n but_o as_o be_v say_v it_o be_v a_o real_a experience_n of_o the_o efficacy_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o wont_a approach_n unto_o we_o and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o with_o our_o heart_n that_o they_o grow_v cold_a freeze_a wither_a lifeless_a in_o and_o unto_o spiritual_a duty_n it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o lord_n christ_n be_v in_o some_o sense_n withdraw_v and_o that_o we_o do_v not_o behold_v his_o glory_n we_o retain_v notion_n of_o truth_n concern_v his_o person_n office_n and_o grace_n but_o faith_n be_v not_o in_o constant_a exercise_n as_o to_o real_a view_n of_o he_o and_o his_o glory_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o certain_a in_o christian_a experience_n than_o this_o be_v declare_v in_o the_o place_n insist_v on_o we_o behold_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n in_o a_o glass_n be_v change_v into_o the_o same_o image_n from_o glory_n to_o glory_n even_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n on_o christ_n in_o the_o way_n before_o describe_v that_o the_o holy_a spirit_n put_v forth_o his_o renew_n transform_a power_n in_o and_o upon_o our_o soul_n this_o therefore_o be_v that_o alone_a which_o will_v retrieve_v christian_n from_o their_o present_a decay_n and_o deadness_n some_z complain_v great_o of_o their_o state_n and_o condition_n none_o so_o dead_a so_o dull_a and_o stupid_a as_o they_o they_o know_v not_o whether_o they_o have_v any_o spark_n of_o heavenly_a life_n leave_v in_o they_o some_o make_v weak_a
