inward_a part_n be_v a_o narrow_a observer_n and_o searcher_n of_o the_o thought_n be_v please_v when_o his_o throne_n be_v establish_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o his_o dominion_n and_o empire_n over_o all_o its_o thought_n and_o imagination_n and_o abhor_v and_o abandon_v a_o unclean_a wicked_a or_o rebellious_a heart_n to_o he_o all_o the_o pomp_n of_o religion_n and_o splendour_n of_o outward_a performance_n be_v without_o it_o detestable_a 11._o the_o soul_n be_v the_o seat_n of_o religion_n as_o for_o the_o part_n and_o member_n of_o our_o body_n they_o be_v entire_o at_o the_o command_n of_o the_o mind_n the_o understanding_n and_o will_n be_v their_o despotic_a ruler_n and_o as_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o thought_n be_v dispose_v so_o be_v the_o practice_n and_o conversation_n and_o therefore_o they_o the_o almighty_a principal_o regard_v as_o a_o man_n can_v never_o testify_v the_o truth_n of_o his_o love_n to_o god_n or_o evidence_n the_o sincerity_n of_o his_o soul_n without_o have_v a_o special_a regard_n to_o the_o well_o govern_v of_o his_o thought_n so_o without_o it_o damnation_n may_v just_o be_v his_o portion_n though_o the_o plague_n break_v not_o out_o in_o the_o botch_n and_o ulcer_n of_o a_o profligate_n conversation_n though_o the_o pollution_n be_v conceal_v and_o hide_a indeed_o if_o we_o be_v so_o profane_a as_o to_o think_v of_o god_n as_o a_o man_n diligent_a and_o careful_a in_o the_o well-governing_a of_o our_o thought_n but_o three_o that_o which_o will_v serve_v to_o make_v we_o further_o sensible_a of_o the_o great_a advantage_n of_o well-governing_a our_o thought_n be_v this_o viz._n that_o we_o shall_v ever_o be_v in_o a_o preparation_n for_o the_o best_a and_o most_o weighty_a duty_n by_o this_o mean_n we_o shall_v not_o only_o be_v able_a to_o resist_v and_o repel_v the_o fury_n of_o temptation_n but_o be_v ready_a for_o the_o performance_n of_o every_o duty_n these_o man_n that_o have_v not_o inure_v themselves_o to_o a_o they_o to_o bring_v their_o thought_n into_o a_o due_a frame_n again_o which_o do_v at_o first_o so_o that_o they_o will_v thereby_o be_v mighty_o hinder_v in_o their_o advance_n in_o religion_n their_o progress_n in_o holiness_n will_v be_v much_o retard_v they_o labour_v in_o a_o circle_n or_o at_o best_o they_o will_v move_v but_o slow_o on_o in_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n in_o comparison_n of_o these_o that_o keep_v a_o constant_a and_o strict_a government_n over_o their_o thought_n these_o latter_a will_v be_v able_a always_o to_o say_v with_o the_o psalmist_n o_o god_n my_o heart_n be_v ready_a 1._o my_o heart_n be_v ready_a and_o what_o a_o happy_a and_o desirable_a temper_n of_o soul_n be_v this_o what_o spiritual_a comfort_n and_o benefit_n do_v these_o enjoy_v which_o other_o for_o want_n of_o a_o due_a care_n and_o watchfulness_n deprive_v themselves_o of_o these_o only_a want_n
god_n we_o of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v in_o no_o danger_n of_o have_v our_o thought_n thus_o draw_v aside_o because_o these_o few_o ceremony_n which_o be_v observe_v in_o it_o be_v appoint_v in_o great_a wisdom_n and_o discretion_n and_o there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o thing_n in_o all_o our_o liturgy_n that_o be_v apt_a to_o excite_v one_o vain_a or_o wander_a thought_n in_o harmony_n in_o our_o outward_a deportment_n as_o well_o as_o inward_a devotion_n and_o this_o will_v be_v a_o mean_n of_o preserve_v our_o thought_n from_o fly_v off_o whereas_o when_o this_o person_n kneel_v and_o another_o stand_v up_o a_o three_o sit_v down_o a_o four_o lean_v etc._n etc._n this_o be_v apt_a to_o beget_v in_o we_o a_o improper_a variety_n of_o thought_n and_o to_o make_v our_o mind_n wander_v covetousness_n and_o worldly-mindedness_a necessary_o make_v our_o thought_n vain_a and_o wander_a while_o we_o be_v about_o holy_a thing_n in_o this_o case_n especial_o its_o true_a that_o no_o man_n can_v serve_v god_n and_o mammon_n we_o can_v no_o more_o have_v our_o thought_n heavenly_a and_o earthly_a spiritual_a and_o carnal_a at_o the_o same_o time_n than_o we_o can_v look_v upward_o and_o downward_o at_o once_o covetousness_n therefore_o and_o worldly-mindedness_a must_v needs_o be_v avoideed_o if_o we_o will_v escape_v wander_v thought_n for_o how_o can_v such_o mystical_a meaning_n of_o that_o action_n of_o our_o saviour_n viz._n etc._n his_o whip_n the_o buyer_n and_o seller_n out_o of_o the_o temple_n say_v my_o house_n shall_v be_v call_v the_o house_n of_o prayer_n but_o you_o have_v make_v it_o a_o den_n of_o thief_n it_o be_v to_o show_v that_o when_o we_o come_v into_o the_o house_n of_o god_n to_o worship_v the_o eternal_a majesty_n and_o in_o all_o other_o holy_a duty_n we_o shall_v abhor_v all_o such_o profane_a mixture_n as_o covetousness_n and_o worldly-mindedness_a which_o be_v the_o table_n of_o the_o money-changer_n and_o the_o seat_n of_o they_o that_o sell_v dove_n and_o altogether_o unsuitable_a to_o these_o holy_a performance_n we_o be_v about_o we_o must_v therefore_o take_v our_o leave_n of_o all_o worldly_a covetous_a or_o anxious_a thought_n otherwise_o our_o mind_n must_v unavoidable_o wander_v when_o like_o that_o of_o martha_n 40._o they_o be_v cumber_v about_o many_o thing_n all_o the_o care_n of_o the_o world_n must_v be_v banish_v from_o our_o heart_n even_o prudent_a and_o honest_a care_n be_v unseasonable_a here_o and_o nothing_o but_o this_o one_o thing_n necessary_a must_v be_v mind_v as_o for_o all_o worldly_a thought_n or_o terrestrial_a imagination_n we_o must_v shake_v off_o the_o very_a dust_n of_o they_o from_o our_o foot_n we_o must_v in_o our_o devotion_n soar_v so_o high_a as_o to_o be_v out_o of_o reach_n of_o the_o fatal_a magnetism_n of_o earth_n this_o must_v we_o endeavour_v to_o do_v if_o we_o will_v avoid_v this_o kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n viz._n wander_v thought_n in_o holy_a duty_n again_o in_o the_o next_o place_n there_o must_v not_o be_v the_o least_o grain_n of_o ambition_n or_o vainglory_n in_o any_o of_o our_o performance_n for_o that_o will_v carry_v away_o our_o thought_n and_o imagination_n after_o a_o thousand_o vain_a and_o foolish_a object_n the_o approve_v ourselves_o to_o a_o omniscient_a god_n must_v be_v our_o sole_a end_n in_o all_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o only_a reason_n of_o our_o be_v please_v with_o our_o best_a and_o most_o excel_a performance_n if_o such_o sinful_a one_o can_v any_o of_o they_o be_v call_v so_o shall_v be_v that_o they_o the_o more_o tend_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n lest_o we_o lose_v all_o the_o reward_n of_o they_o and_o incur_v that_o just_a opprobrium_fw-la of_o our_o saviour_n woe_n on_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n 5._o when_o thou_o pray_v thou_o shall_v not_o be_v as_o the_o hypocrite_n be_v for_o they_o love_v to_o pray_v stand_v in_o the_o synagogue_n and_o in_o the_o corner_n of_o the_o street_n that_o they_o may_v be_v see_v of_o man_n very_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o they_o have_v their_o reward_n to_o these_o rule_n and_o direction_n in_o order_n to_o the_o avoid_n wander_a thought_n may_v be_v add_v a_o careful_a observance_n of_o all_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o lordsday_n a_o mind_v the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n when_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v mind_v with_o indifference_n and_o a_o trust_n in_o the_o overrule_a providence_n of_o god_n that_o we_o be_v more_o and_o more_o humble_a and_o repent_v that_o there_o remain_v no_o sin_n unmortified_a in_o we_o a_o devout_a and_o earnest_a pray_v to_o be_v deliver_v from_o they_o that_o so_o we_o may_v serve_v god_n without_o distraction_n in_o imitation_n of_o the_o bless_a in_o heaven_n etc._n etc._n these_o be_v the_o principal_a rule_n that_o i_o can_v discover_v in_o order_n to_o the_o avoid_v vain_a and_o wander_a thought_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n which_o be_v oftentimes_o a_o unspeakable_a affliction_n to_o good_a christian_n and_o which_o it_o be_v no_o small_a difficulty_n to_o prevent_v but_o if_o after_o the_o use_n of_o these_o direction_n which_o i_o have_v lay_v down_o and_o all_o that_o we_o can_v do_v we_o can_v be_v rid_v of_o they_o but_o they_o will_v still_o haunt_v and_o disturb_v we_o yet_o we_o must_v persist_v in_o our_o duty_n though_o they_o shall_v come_v very_o thick_a upon_o we_o yet_o we_o must_v not_o be_v discourage_v from_o our_o duty_n for_o leave_v that_o undo_v be_v i_o be_o sure_a far_o from_o be_v a_o remedy_n against_o they_o and_o give_v the_o devil_n a_o great_a advantage_n over_o we_o than_o we_o be_v aware_a we_o must_v therefore_o continue_v in_o our_o duty_n though_o it_o be_v with_o a_o heavy_a heart_n and_o then_o we_o shall_v retain_v the_o virtue_n though_o we_o lose_v the_o present_a satisfaction_n of_o our_o obedience_n god_n see_v the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o will_v assure_o reward_v we_o at_o the_o last_o although_o the_o devil_n who_o have_v a_o great_a hand_n in_o these_o thought_n also_o as_o we_o find_v in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o sour_a do_v continual_o vex_v 13._o and_o trouble_v we_o with_o they_o yet_o let_v we_o wait_v upon_o god_n with_o patience_n and_o a_o humble_a observance_n of_o these_o rule_n lay_v down_o as_o far_o as_o we_o be_v able_a and_o then_o we_o shall_v be_v in_o no_o danger_n by_o reason_n of_o such_o thought_n though_o we_o shall_v be_v grapple_v and_o
