say_v and_o life_n he_o make_v all_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n vile_a and_o all_o the_o work_n of_o god_n contemptible_a his_o household_n sleep_v one_o snort_n it_o may_v be_v another_o be_v infinite_o profane_v it_o may_v be_v and_o though_o there_o be_v divers_a that_o will_v fain_o be_v quicken_v and_o waken_v yet_o his_o prayer_n be_v so_o cold_a there_o be_v no_o life_n or_o heat_n be_v as_o confident_a as_o stately_a when_o they_o do_v pray_v and_o fast_o they_o can_v rest_v upon_o their_o duty_n as_o in_o the_o three_o verse_n wherefore_o have_v we_o fast_v and_o thou_o see_v it_o not_o we_o have_v punish_v ourselves_o and_o thou_o regard_v it_o not_o god_n give_v they_o a_o account_n for_o that_o and_o discover_v their_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o and_o slight_a hypocrite_n they_o will_v be_v content_a to_o be_v frequent_a in_o fast_v and_o prayer_n the_o three_o be_v this_o that_o fast_v right_o improve_v will_v put_v a_o edge_n upon_o our_o prayer_n i_o shall_v only_o speak_v a_o word_n of_o each_o of_o these_o for_o the_o first_o and_o i_o name_v it_o again_o i_o say_v hypocrisy_n in_o duty_n of_o this_o nature_n do_v take_v away_o the_o life_n of_o the_o duty_n it_o rise_v plain_o out_o of_o the_o text_n hypocrisy_n in_o duty_n take_v away_o the_o life_n of_o the_o duty_n say_v the_o lord_n i_o have_v not_o choose_v this_o fast_a but_o this_o be_v the_o fast_a that_o i_o have_v choose_v to_o loose_v the_o bond_n of_o wickedness_n to_o take_v off_o the_o heavy_a burden_n and_o to_o let_v the_o oppress_v go_v free_a to_o deal_v thy_o bread_n to_o the_o hungry_a to_o bring_v the_o poor_a unto_o thy_o house_n this_o be_v the_o fast_a that_o i_o look_v at_o i_o do_v not_o look_v that_o a_o son_n of_o god_n shall_v come_v to_o guild_v over_o a_o day_n of_o fast_v to_o weep_v and_o howl_v it_o out_o but_o the_o thing_n the_o lord_n require_v be_v to_o ease_v the_o burden_n of_o the_o afflict_a to_o help_v the_o poor_a and_o oppress_a one_o this_o day_n of_o fast_v and_o prayer_n will_v be_v the_o sad_a that_o ever_o england_n have_v if_o it_o do_v not_o end_v in_o the_o reformation_n of_o the_o nation_n a_o hypocrite_n will_v perform_v as_o glorious_a duty_n it_o may_v be_v better_o than_o you_o but_o there_o he_o rest_v and_o spare_v all_o cost_n he_o join_v not_o charity_n with_o his_o pretend_a sanctity_n second_o false_a and_o slight_a hypocrite_n will_v be_v frequent_o in_o fast_v and_o prayer_n this_o arise_v from_o the_o other_o part_n hypocrite_n will_v be_v very_o forward_o they_o can_v say_v we_o have_v fast_v and_o pray_v we_o have_v do_v this_o they_o can_v take_v delight_n in_o approach_v to_o god_n they_o will_v come_v never_o the_o business_n and_o say_v when_o will_v there_o be_v a_o reform_v of_o what_o be_v amiss_o both_o in_o church_n and_o state_n they_o make_v a_o great_a stir_n and_o in_o mean_a time_n suffer_v many_o poor_a servant_n of_o god_n to_o perish_v for_o want_v of_o sustenance_n about_o they_o in_o this_o i_o do_v not_o mean_v mistake_v i_o not_o that_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n shall_v not_o do_v these_o duty_n but_o all_o that_o i_o say_v be_v to_o prove_v that_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v do_v these_o duty_n and_o this_o consider_v you_o will_v find_v that_o there_o be_v not_o a_o few_o such_o among_o we_o because_o all_o we_o do_v if_o right_o do_v must_v spring_v from_o other_o principle_n if_o you_o shall_v fast_v every_o day_n in_o the_o week_n it_o will_v not_o do_v unless_o the_o other_o duty_n before_o name_v be_v reach_v the_o mark_n and_o so_o you_o lose_v the_o game_n a_o cannon_n may_v make_v a_o great_a noise_n and_o yet_o come_v a_o mile_n short_a of_o the_o mark_n for_o hypocricie_n take_v away_o the_o life_n of_o the_o duty_n your_o cannon_n boar_n be_v warp_a so_o your_o bullet_n go_v beside_o the_o mark_n it_o must_v be_v a_o prayer_n right_o and_o understand_o make_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v hear_v there_o be_v a_o phrase_n to_o this_o purpose_n deut._n 5._o 28._o and_o the_o lord_n say_v i_o have_v hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o word_n of_o this_o people_n which_o they_o have_v speak_v face_n like_o spittle_n against_o the_o wind_n and_o never_o come_v to_o god_n presence_n mark_v i_o say_v hypocricle_n take_v away_o the_o vigour_n and_o life_n of_o the_o duty_n say_v the_o lord_n this_o be_v not_o the_o fast_o that_o i_o have_v choose_v not_o the_o prayer_n that_o i_o will_v have_v make_v these_o prayer_n be_v but_o arrow_n shoot_v out_o of_o a_o weak_a bow_n that_o come_v not_o half_a way_n to_o the_o mark_n now_o we_o proceed_v to_o open_v it_o in_o the_o
particular_n i_o will_v bring_v two_o or_o three_o argument_n to_o prove_v it_o that_o it_o be_v so_o 1._o you_o shall_v find_v that_o hypocrisy_n in_o these_o ordinance_n do_v spoil_v all_o upon_o these_o two_o or_o three_o ground_n the_o first_o be_v this_o because_o all_o this_o falseness_n and_o hypocrisy_n be_v direct_o against_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n you_o have_v a_o strange_a passage_n to_o this_o purpose_n mat._n 6._o 5._o and_o when_o thou_o pray_v be_v not_o as_o the_o hypocrite_n for_o they_o love_v to_o stand_v and_o pray_v in_o the_o sinagove_n etc._n etc._n very_o i_o say_v they_o have_v their_o reward_n what_o be_v that_o what_o be_v the_o reward_n of_o a_o false_a hypocritical_a prayer_n he_o have_v his_o prayer_n that_o be_v all_o his_o work_n for_o his_o work_n a_o day_n of_o fast_v for_o a_o day_n of_o fast_v that_o be_v all_o a_o poor_a reward_n it_o too_o often_o fall_v out_o that_o among_o your_o child_n you_o have_v one_o that_o be_v a_o spend-all_a a_o riotous_a person_n now_o when_o the_o father_n come_v to_o make_v his_o will_n he_o give_v to_o each_o of_o his_o obedient_a child_n such_o a_o portion_n as_o he_o be_v able_a but_o when_o this_o his_o lewd_a son_n come_v to_o be_v name_v what_o say_v he_o to_o he_o i_o have_v give_v thou_o so_o much_o and_o so_o much_o time_n after_o time_n thou_o have_v spend_v all_o i_o have_v now_o only_o a_o shilling_n for_o thou_o and_o that_o not_o out_o of_o any_o love_n neither_o but_o to_o stop_v thy_o mouth_n from_o trouble_v thy_o brethren_n for_o any_o more_o so_o we_o come_v to_o fast_v and_o prayer_n well_o say_v god_n you_o shall_v have_v your_o reward_n i_o will_v give_v you_o twelve_o penny_n you_o have_v be_v false_a and_o vile_a with_o that_o mercy_n that_o you_o have_v have_v therefore_o look_v for_o no_o more_o and_o thus_o when_o the_o hypocrite_n come_v to_o see_v what_o he_o have_v get_v by_o all_o his_o duty_n it_o will_v be_v just_a nothing_o this_o be_v the_o point_n that_o i_o mean_v i_o will_v prove_v it_o in_o three_o particular_n that_o falseness_n and_o hypocrisy_n in_o duty_n take_v away_o the_o life_n of_o the_o duty_n first_o because_o hypocrisy_n here_o be_v direct_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o the_o lord_n can_v possible_o accept_v of_o it_o i_o do_v not_o care_n for_o they_o say_v the_o lord_n i_o will_v none_o of_o their_o service_n they_o be_v direct_o against_o my_o name_n jehovah_n be_v god_n nature_n which_o have_v a_o be_v hypocrisy_n have_v no_o be_v nothing_o in_o it_o therefore_o no_o be_v in_o your_o prayer_n you_o tell_v god_n you_o sin_n you_o mean_v not_o to_o leave_v it_o and_o what_o tell_v you_o i_o of_o such_o a_o kind_n of_o prayer_n it_o be_v a_o picture_n of_o a_o nothing_o see_v a_o passage_n mat._n 15._o 8._o say_v god_n this_o people_n draw_v near_o to_o i_o with_o their_o lip_n but_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o i_o therefore_o he_o say_v 9_o verse_n but_o in_o vain_a they_o worship_v i_o it_o be_v all_o to_o no_o purpose_n there_o be_v a_o emptiness_n in_o all_o this_o a_o poor_a ignorant_a creature_n may_v run_v to_o church_n with_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n hence_o nothing_o so_o all_o idol_n worship_n be_v nothing_o god_n be_v a_o be_v jehovah_n idol_n worship_n have_v no_o be_v therefore_o nothing_o you_o shall_v not_o see_v more_o cost_n and_o bodily_a labour_n more_o ceremony_n and_o specious_a show_n in_o any_o religion_n under_o the_o sun_n then_o in_o rome_n yet_o all_o this_o nothing_o because_o outside_n service_n a_o little_a fire_n will_v quick_o consume_v all_o this_o now_o if_o you_o come_v before_o god_n this_o day_n and_o do_v not_o bring_v your_o heart_n in_o a_o fit_a temper_n according_a to_o the_o rule_n pass_v that_o ordinance_n use_v or_o rather_o abuse_v give_v occasion_n to_o the_o enemy_n of_o god_n to_o open_v their_o mouth_n and_o speak_v base_o of_o these_o ordinance_n as_o if_o they_o have_v nothing_o in_o they_o the_o ordinance_n themselves_o suffer_v much_o in_o this_o they_o can_v say_v they_o be_v frequent_a in_o these_o duty_n such_o and_o such_o keep_v whole_a day_n of_o fast_v and_o prayer_n day_n after_o day_n and_o yet_o return_v again_o to_o their_o sinful_a course_n as_o bad_a drunkard_n and_o thief_n the_o next_o day_n as_o ever_o hence_o say_v the_o papist_n and_o profane_a person_n these_o be_v the_o faster_n what_o amendment_n see_v you_o in_o they_o and_o hence_o they_o conclude_v what_o shall_v weep_a fast_a and_o prayer_n do_v god_n regard_v they_o not_o they_o have_v nothing_o in_o they_o no_o benefit_n come_v by_o they_o people_n be_v not_o convert_v that_o use_n they_o they_o be_v as_o ignorant_a as_o they_o be_v no_o change_n wrought_v upon_o
