that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v beast_n be_v not_o subject_a to_o half_a those_o in_o firmity_n of_o body_n which_o man_n be_v sickness_n weakness_n weariness_n etc._n etc._n and_o for_o those_o of_o last_o beast_n have_v no_o thought_n of_o any_o future_a life_n nor_o of_o the_o immortality_n of_o soul_n about_o which_o man_n be_v extreme_o perplex_v almost_o in_o continual_a dread_n and_o that_o by_o these_o external_a action_n visible_o do_v that_o other_o invisible_a motion_n which_o cause_v they_o be_v reciprocal_o increase_v and_o by_o this_o mean_v that_o affection_n of_o mind_n which_o precede_v those_o action_n as_o the_o cause_n of_o they_o be_v itself_o also_o increase_v because_o they_o be_v do_v and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o when_o it_o happen_v that_o a_o man_n be_v suppose_v perhaps_o will_v be_v much_o for_o his_o profit_n yet_o i_o think_v it_o do_v he_o no_o harm_n when_o a_o other_o man_n right_o inform_v he_o how_o to_o do_v as_o well_o without_o it_o chap._n xviii_o to_o conclude_v therefore_o thing_n stand_v thus_o as_o have_v be_v say_v we_o be_v not_o to_o imagine_v that_o any_o thing_n we_o do_v for_o the_o dead_a do_v profit_v they_o save_o such_o good_a office_n shall_v profit_v they_o after_o death_n but_o because_o we_o ourselves_o discern_v not_o certain_o among_o the_o dead_a who_o be_v such_o and_o who_o be_v not_o such_o it_o be_v there_o be_v any_o sense_n in_o dead_a body_n but_o only_o see_v that_o such_o office_n of_o piety_n be_v please_v to_o god_n they_o signify_v unto_o we_o that_o even_o the_o dead_a body_n do_v pertain_v unto_o the_o divine_a providence_n and_o this_o the_o rather_o to_o confirm_v our_o faith_n in_o the_o resurrection_n and_o hence_o also_o we_o may_v learn_v not_o unprofitable_o how_o great_a reward_n there_o may_v be_v for_o such_o alm_n as_o we_o give_v unto_o live_a people_n when_o even_o that_o which_o be_v bestow_v upon_o the_o dead_a and_o liveless_a member_n be_v not_o lose_v with_o god_n there_o be_v indeed_o some_o other_o particular_n which_o the_o holy_a patriarch_n who_o speak_v they_o will_v have_v to_o be_v understand_v concern_v the_o burial_n and_o translate_n of_o their_o body_n after_o death_n as_o speak_v by_o a_o prophetical_a spirit_n but_o this_o be_v no_o place_n to_o treat_v of_o they_o see_v that_o which_o we_o have_v deliver_v already_o may_v suffice_v for_o if_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o sustenance_n of_o the_o live_n and_o can_v be_v want_v but_o with_o great_a difficulty_n as_o victual_n apparel_n etc._n etc._n yet_o do_v never_o when_o they_o be_v want_v violate_v or_o overthrow_v the_o virtue_n of_o patience_n in_o good_a people_n nor_o extirpate_v piety_n quite_o out_o of_o the_o mind_n but_o rather_o exercise_v and_o revive_v it_o much_o less_o doubtless_o can_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v usual_o expend_v in_o funeral_n &_o exequy_n upon_o decease_a person_n when_o they_o happen_v to_o be_v want_v make_v those_o person_n miserable_a who_o be_v already_o settle_v and_o at_o rest_n in_o those_o secret_a tabernacle_n of_o the_o just_a and_o therefore_o when_o it_o so_o fall_v out_o in_o the_o devastation_n of_o that_o great_a city_n and_o of_o the_o adjacent_a town_n that_o the_o body_n of_o good_a christian_n have_v not_o burial_n we_o may_v not_o present_o charge_v either_o the_o live_n with_o any_o crime_n thereabouts_o who_o can_v not_o help_v it_o nor_o yet_o the_o dead_a with_o any_o great_a misfortune_n who_o be_v as_o little_a sensible_a of_o it_o this_o be_v my_o opinion_n concern_v the_o matter_n of_o sepulture_n in_o general_a which_o i_o have_v therefore_o translate_v into_o this_o book_n out_o of_o that_o other_o of_o the_o city_n of_o god_n in_o regard_n it_o be_v something_o more_o easy_a for_o i_o to_o repeat_v it_o in_o this_o then_o to_o deliver_v it_o in_o a_o new_a manner_n chap._n four_o now_o if_o this_o be_v so_o sure_o also_o the_o provision_n of_o place_n for_o the_o burial_n of_o body_n at_o the_o monument_n of_o saint_n must_v have_v something_o in_o it_o it_o must_v be_v at_o least_o a_o argument_n of_o some_o good_a humane_a affection_n towards_o our_o friend_n who_o funeral_n we_o celebrate_v and_o if_o it_o be_v some_o kind_n of_o religion_n to_o bury_v they_o at_o all_o certain_o to_o have_v care_n in_o what_o place_n we_o bury_v they_o can_v but_o be_v of_o like_a merit_n but_o yet_o when_o such_o comfort_n as_o these_o be_v procure_v by_o the_o live_n by_o which_o indeed_o their_o pious_a affection_n towards_o their_o decease_a friend_n be_v sufficient_o declare_v to_o survive_v yet_o i_o say_v i_o perceive_v not_o for_o my_o part_n any_o advantage_n come_v thereby_o unto_o the_o dead_a unless_o it_o be_v in_o this_o only_a respect_n namely_o that_o when_o man_n remember_v where_o the_o body_n of_o their_o decease_a friend_n be_v place_v they_o may_v in_o their_o prayer_n recommend_v they_o unto_o god_n more_o effectual_o by_o the_o intercession_n of_o those_o saint_n unto_o who_o patronage_n they_o may_v seem_v by_o the_o place_n of_o their_o burial_n desire_a patronage_n of_o saint_n profitable_a when_o desire_a to_o be_v receive_v which_o yet_o also_o they_o may_v if_o they_o please_v very_o well_o do_v suppose_v they_o be_v not_o inter_v in_o such_o place_n neither_o be_v those_o more_o eminent_a sepulcher_n of_o the_o dead_a call_v memory_n or_o monument_n for_o any_o other_o reason_n then_o because_o they_o do_v as_o it_o be_v renew_v or_o preserve_v the_o remembrance_n of_o such_o person_n as_o be_v by_o death_n withdraw_v from_o the_o common_a conversation_n of_o man_n and_o so_o hinder_v that_o they_o perish_v not_o altogether_o as_o much_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o their_o friend_n as_o they_o seem_v lose_v to_o their_o eye_n for_o the_o very_a name_n of_o memory_n import_v this_o clear_o and_o a_o monument_n be_v so_o call_v because_o it_o admonish_v or_o as_o it_o be_v prompt_v the_o mind_n to_o something_o which_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v think_v on_o for_o which_o reason_n also_o the_o same_o thing_n which_o we_o call_v a_o memory_n or_o monument_n the_o greek_n call_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d from_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d which_o in_o their_o language_n be_v as_o much_o as_o remembrance_n with_o we_o whensoever_o therefore_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n remember_v where_o the_o body_n of_o some_o dear_a friend_n be_v bury_v if_o the_o place_n which_o come_v to_o mind_n be_v also_o venerable_a and_o renown_v for_o the_o name_n of_o some_o martyr_n instant_o without_o more_o ado_n the_o good_a affection_n of_o he_o that_o remember_v this_o tyr_n soul_n recommen_v unto_o the_o mar._n tyr_n in_o his_o prayer_n recommend_v the_o soul_n it_o love_v unto_o the_o same_o martyr_n which_o affection_n yet_o when_o it_o be_v exhibit_v by_o faithful_a and_o dear_a friend_n unto_o people_n depart_v all_o or_o not_o in_o such_o place_n as_o these_o depart_v prayer_n for_o the_o soul_n depart_v yet_o prayer_n for_o the_o soul_n depart_v be_v never_o pretermit_v which_o the_o church_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v engage_v herself_o to_o perform_v at_o least_o under_o a_o general_a commemoration_n without_o particular_a mention_n of_o name_n in_o behalf_n of_o all_o those_o who_o be_v depart_v in_o the_o christian_n catholic_n communion_n to_o the_o intent_n that_o by_o the_o care_n of_o one_o pious_a &_o common_a mother_n unto_o all_o supply_n may_v be_v make_v of_o such_o good_a office_n wherein_o possible_o our_o friend_n kindred_n child_n or_o parent_n may_v be_v defective_a towards_o we_o so_o that_o indeed_o in_o case_n these_o supplication_n we_o speak_v of_o which_o be_v usual_o do_v in_o right_a faith_n and_o piety_n for_o the_o dead_a shall_v be_v want_v or_o not_o make_v at_o all_o i_o for_o my_o part_n suppose_v it_o will_v not_o much_o profit_n a_o man_n soul_n to_o have_v his_o body_n bury_v in_o a_o holy_a place_n chap._n v._n wherefore_o to_o return_v to_o our_o purpose_n when_o as_o this_o faithful_a mother_n desire_v to_o have_v the_o body_n of_o her_o faithful_a child_n put_v in_o the_o church_n of_o a_o martyr_n this_o desire_n of_o she_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o prayer_n for_o as_o much_o as_o she_o believe_v his_o soul_n may_v receive_v help_n by_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o martyr_n strong_o soul_n receive_v help_n by_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o martyr_n s._n aug._n assure_v we_o that_o prayer_n for_o the_o dead_a be_v very_o profitable_a though_o he_o be_v not_o certain_a whither_o the_o burial_n in_o any_o particular_a place_n be_v so_o available_a yet_o he_o much_o incline_v to_o that_o also_o and_o prove_v it_o very_o strong_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o profit_v if_o any_o thing_n do_v profit_n at_o all_o so_o when_o the_o mother_n afterward_o remember_v the_o same_o sepulchre_n
that_o beast_n his_o soul_n shall_v also_o be_v pluck_v away_o at_o the_o same_o time_n to_o the_o torment_n of_o hell_n no_o we_o see_v the_o lion_n which_o kill_v he_o become_v instant_o his_o guardian_n and_o defend_v his_o body_n from_o the_o raven_a of_o other_o beast_n yea_o the_o very_a ass_n on_o which_o he_o ride_v remain_v untouched_a seem_v to_o assist_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o undaunted_a presence_n at_o the_o funeral_n of_o his_o master_n which_o certain_o be_v not_o without_o miracle_n and_o a_o evident_a sign_n that_o the_o man_n of_o god_n in_o that_o case_n be_v correct_v only_o unto_o a_o temporal_a death_n and_o not_o at_o all_o punish_v afterward_o not_o much_o unlike_a to_o that_o passage_n of_o the_o apostle_n 11.31_o 1_o cor._n 11.31_o where_o have_v commemorate_a the_o infirmity_n yea_o death_n of_o many_o of_o the_o people_n for_o some_o particular_a offence_n among_o they_o he_o conclude_v at_o last_o thus_o if_o we_o will_v judge_v ourselves_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v judge_v by_o our_o lord_n but_o when_o we_o be_v judge_v we_o be_v chastise_v by_o our_o lord_n lest_o we_o shall_v be_v condemn_v with_o the_o world_n and_o true_o he_o who_o have_v deceive_v this_o prophet_n bury_v he_o afterward_o in_o his_o own_o monument_n with_o sufficient_a honour_n yea_o and_o take_v order_v beside_o that_o himself_o may_v be_v afterward_o bury_v as_o near_o as_o may_v be_v unto_o his_o corpse_n hope_v as_o we_o may_v probable_o suppose_v that_o by_o this_o mean_v his_o own_o bone_n may_v be_v spare_v when_o the_o time_n shall_v come_v according_a to_o the_o pprophecy_n of_o this_o very_a man_n of_o god_n that_o the_o good_a king_n josias_n shall_v cause_v the_o bone_n of_o many_o dead_a people_n to_o be_v dis-interred_n and_o those_o idolatrous_a altar_n which_o have_v be_v build_v unto_o strange_a god_n in_o and_o about_o jerusalem_n to_o be_v defile_v therewith_o for_o so_o indeed_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v the_o monument_n wherein_o this_o prophet_n be_v bury_v who_o foretell_v those_o thing_n three_o hundred_o year_n before_o and_o the_o sepulchre_n of_o he_o who_o deceive_v he_o be_v spare_v and_o so_o we_o see_v out_o of_o that_o natural_a affection_n by_o which_o every_o man_n love_v his_o own_o flesh_n 23.12_o 4_o reg._n 23.12_o this_o prophet_n be_v careful_a to_o provide_v for_o the_o temporal_a security_n of_o his_o body_n even_o after_o death_n who_o yet_o by_o a_o lie_n so_o much_o as_o in_o he_o lay_v care_v not_o to_o hazard_v his_o soul_n for_o ever_o in_o this_o respect_n therefore_o that_o every_o one_o natural_o love_v his_o own_o flesh_n it_o be_v some_o kind_n of_o punishment_n for_o the_o one_o to_o know_v that_o he_o shall_v not_o come_v to_o be_v bury_v in_o the_o sepulchre_n of_o his_o father_n and_o in_o the_o other_o if_o that_o have_v be_v all_o a_o providence_n not_o unworthy_a of_o commendation_n viz._n to_o lay_v his_o bone_n in_o a_o sepulchre_n which_o he_o be_v sure_a none_o will_v violate_v chap._n viii_o the_o martyr_n indeed_o while_o they_o fight_v for_o the_o truth_n vanquish_v this_o affection_n and_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n they_o shall_v for_o they_o who_o can_v not_o be_v overcome_v with_o any_o torment_n they_o suffer_v alive_a it_o have_v be_v very_o strange_a shall_v they_o have_v shrink_v at_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v after_o death_n whereof_o they_o shall_v have_v no_o sense_n doubtless_o god_n almighty_a who_o suffer_v not_o the_o lion_n so_o much_o as_o to_o touch_v the_o prophet_n after_o he_o be_v dead_a but_o as_o it_o be_v command_v he_o to_o guard_v that_o body_n which_o he_o have_v slay_v can_v as_o easy_o if_o he_o have_v so_o please_v have_v keep_v off_o those_o dog_n from_o the_o body_n of_o his_o servant_n he_o can_v have_v terrify_v by_o a_o hundred_o way_n the_o cruel_a mind_n of_o those_o people_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o have_v dare_v either_o to_o burn_v their_o body_n or_o to_o throw_v about_o their_o ash_n but_o this_o be_v a_o trial_n of_o those_o saint_n not_o fit_a to_o be_v want_v to_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o suffering_n that_o the_o fortitude_n of_o their_o confession_n which_o be_v already_o well_o see_v in_o not_o yield_v to_o any_o torture_n to_o save_v their_o life_n may_v yet_o be_v consummate_v as_o it_o be_v and_o perfect_v in_o this_o that_o for_o christ_n sake_n they_o regard_v as_o little_a the_o honour_n of_o sepulture_n remain_v through_o their_o faith_n in_o the_o resurrection_n as_o secure_v of_o their_o body_n as_o they_o be_v of_o their_o soul_n and_o for_o this_o reason_n also_o it_o be_v fit_a that_o such_o thing_n shall_v be_v permit_v to_o be_v do_v that_o the_o martyr_n themselves_o by_o such_o glorious_a combat_n shall_v become_v fervent_a witness_n of_o that_o truth_n which_o from_o our_o saviour_n they_o have_v learn_v namely_o that_o they_o which_o thus_o cruel_o tyrannize_v over_o their_o body_n after_o death_n have_v no_o more_o to_o do_v see_v that_o whatsoever_o they_o shall_v attempt_v upon_o the_o body_n once_o dead_a will_v be_v nothing_o nothing_o i_o say_v either_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o only_o have_v sense_n and_o be_v already_o depart_v or_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n the_o creator_n who_o providence_n be_v such_o as_o nothing_o can_v be_v lose_v which_o he_o have_v make_v the_o extreme_a vigilance_n of_o their_o persecutor_n they_o can_v not_o perform_v the_o honour_n of_o their_o funeral_n no_o not_o so_o much_o as_o to_o procure_v private_o the_o least_o relic_n of_o they_o saint_n christian_n in_o old_a time_n use_v diligence_n to_o get_v any_o small_a relic_n of_o saint_n as_o the_o same_o history_n show_v so_o as_o when_o no_o evil_a at_o all_o touch_v they_o who_o be_v kill_v either_o that_o their_o body_n be_v tear_v in_o piece_n or_o their_o bone_n burn_v or_o their_o ash_n cast_v abroad_o yet_o in_o the_o live_n we_o see_v there_o be_v much_o sorrow_n and_o affliction_n because_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v that_o for_o their_o friend_n which_o this_o natural_a affection_n seem_v to_o require_v that_o be_v there_o be_v in_o they_o a_o according_a unto_o which_o kind_n of_o miserable_a compassion_n as_o it_o may_v be_v call_v we_o read_v those_o man_n be_v high_o commend_v by_o king_n david_n who_o have_v bury_v that_o be_v 2.5_o 2_o reg_n 2.5_o show_v such_o pity_n unto_o the_o dry_a bone_n of_o saul_n and_o jonathan_n but_o can_v any_o pity_n be_v show_v to_o they_o who_o have_v no_o sense_n of_o misery_n or_o shall_v we_o live_n though_o he_o know_v not_o particular_o what_o they_o do_v be_v such_o as_o our_o care_n for_o the_o dead_a be_v who_o know_v not_o certain_o either_o what_o they_o do_v or_o where_o they_o be_v and_o yet_o we_o have_v some_o kind_n of_o care_n of_o they_o for_o if_o we_o have_v not_o certain_o we_o shall_v never_o pray_v for_o they_o neither_o do_v abraham_n send_v lazarus_n unto_o they_o but_o reply_v they_o have_v moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n who_o they_o ought_v to_o follow_v to_o the_o end_n they_o come_v not_o into_o those_o place_n of_o torment_n and_o if_o you_o object_n how_o can_v abraham_n himself_o know_v that_o they_o have_v moses_n &_o the_o prophet_n if_o the_o dead_a know_v nothing_o of_o the_o affair_n of_o the_o world_n after_o death_n for_o moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n be_v all_o after_o abraham_n &_o how_o can_v he_o know_v that_o by_o observe_v the_o precept_n of_o moses_n and_o the_o prophet_n man_n may_v escape_v hell_n yea_o how_o can_v he_o know_v that_o this_o dives_n have_v live_v all_o his_o life_n long_o in_o riot_n and_o pleasure_n and_o poor_a lazarus_n in_o pain_n for_o so_o he_o tell_v he_o plain_o son_n remember_v that_o thou_o do_v receive_v good_a thing_n in_o thy_o life_n and_o lazarus_n likewise_o evil_a if_o i_o say_v you_o conclude_v that_o therefore_o abraham_n though_o dead_a must_v needs_o know_v many_o thing_n do_v among_o the_o live_n i_o shall_v answer_v he_o do_v certain_o know_v they_o yet_o not_o then_o when_o they_o be_v a_o do_v or_o perhaps_o but_o new_o do_v in_o the_o world_n but_o afterward_o as_o he_o may_v by_o sundry_a way_n and_o particular_o the_o state_n of_o dives_n and_o lazarus_n he_o know_v not_o when_o dives_n and_o lazarus_n live_v in_o the_o world_n but_o afterward_o when_o they_o be_v both_o dead_a he_o may_v learn_v it_o of_o lazarus_n lest_o otherwise_o that_o which_o the_o prophet_n say_v may_v seem_v not_o to_o hold_v true_a viz._n that_o abraham_n know_v we_o not_o chap._n xv._o therefore_o indeed_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o the_o dead_a know_v not_o what_o be_v do_v here_o know_v he_o declare_v how_o many_o way_n the_o dead_a may_v come_v to_o know_v what_o be_v do_v in_o this_o world_n &_o what_o thing_n they_o know_v but_o this_o to_o be_v understand_v only_o while_o it_o be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o do_v here_o or_o but_o new_o do_v for_o afterward_o as_o i_o say_v they_o may_v understand_v it_o namely_o by_o those_o who_o die_v depart_n from_o hence_o unto_o they_o but_o yet_o not_o all_o thing_n whatsoever_o but_o those_o only_o which_o they_o be_v permit_v to_o disclose_v yea_o which_o they_o be_v permit_v to_o remember_v and_o may_v be_v necessary_a for_o other_o to_o know_v the_o dead_a also_o may_v understand_v some_o thing_n from_o those_o angel_n who_o office_n be_v to_o attend_v the_o affair_n of_o this_o world_n according_a as_o he_o see_v good_a and_o expedient_a for_o they_o to_o know_v to_o
