favour_n the_o first_o be_v that_o the_o dead_a know_v not_o any_o thing_n to_o wit_n of_o the_o estate_n of_o affair_n here_o as_o for_o example_n how_o it_o fare_v with_o their_o relation_n and_o the_o purchase_n they_o make_v in_o the_o world_n and_o so_o he_o do_v not_o deny_v the_o be_v of_o the_o soul_n after_o separation_n from_o the_o body_n nor_o consequent_o the_o essential_a property_n of_o it_o such_o as_o the_o exercise_n of_o reason_n and_o the_o like_a 2._o they_o have_v no_o more_o a_o reward_n he_o speak_v not_o of_o the_o future_a reward_n of_o their_o welldoing_a and_o evil-doing_a which_o certain_o abide_v both_o good_a and_o bad_a mat._n 25.46_o but_o of_o the_o temporal_a fruit_n of_o their_o labour_n and_o pain_n which_o they_o have_v take_v in_o this_o retain_v its_o own_o nature_n and_o doubtless_o there_o be_v perfect_a love_n which_o cast_v out_o all_o fear_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o just_a man_n make_v perfect_a and_o there_o be_v also_o in_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o damn_a hatred_n and_o envy_n against_o god_n and_o good_a man_n and_o against_o one_o another_o but_o he_o mean_v that_o these_o passion_n and_o affection_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v at_o death_n go_v as_o to_o the_o exercise_n of_o they_o upon_o thing_n in_o the_o earth_n which_o they_o be_v spend_v upon_o while_n man_n live_v here_o and_o because_o it_o be_v long_o to_o reckon_v out_o all_o particular_n of_o this_o sort_n he_o close_v with_o a_o general_n neither_o have_v they_o any_o more_o a_o portion_n of_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v do_v under_o the_o sun_n which_o also_o explain_v the_o former_a that_o he_o deny_v their_o knowledge_n their_o reward_n their_o memory_n and_o their_o affection_n only_o in_o reference_n to_o thing_n under_o the_o sun_n they_o have_v no_o more_o to_o do_v with_o these_o thing_n all_o which_o consideration_n may_v wean_v man_n heart_n from_o this_o earth_n and_o may_v make_v the_o godly_a content_n with_o a_o small_a measure_n of_o these_o thing_n see_v they_o that_o have_v most_o of_o they_o must_v after_o a_o little_a time_n part_n with_o they_o and_o never_o enjoy_v they_o any_o more_o hence_o learn_v 1._o every_o live_a man_n shall_v associate_v himself_o with_o other_o not_o in_o evil_a but_o to_o receive_v good_a from_o other_o and_o to_o communicate_v good_a to_o they_o for_o thus_o he_o describe_v of_o their_o outward_a comfort_n therefore_o be_v it_o that_o solomon_n after_o a_o general_a intimation_n in_o the_o former_a verse_n that_o death_n and_o trouble_n be_v before_o man_n he_o come_v another_o course_n for_o his_o happiness_n and_o the_o last_o be_v because_o the_o wise_a in_o the_o world_n without_o save_a knowledge_n have_v no_o more_o have_v what_o he_o will_v that_o bring_v he_o any_o near_a to_o true_a happiness_n than_o the_o fool_n who_o have_v not_o that_o wisdom_n but_o lest_o the_o poor_a in_o the_o world_n hear_v so_o much_o speak_v to_o prove_v the_o misery_n whether_o they_o love_v long_o or_o not_o whether_o they_o be_v rich_a or_o poor_a honourable_a or_o despise_a wise_a or_o foolish_a and_o so_o forth_o if_o they_o be_v void_a of_o save_a knowledge_n they_o be_v all_o alike_o far_o distant_a from_o true_a happiness_n and_o satisfaction_n hence_o learn_v 1._o however_o some_o unrenewed_a man_n may_v seem_v to_o have_v more_o pure_a and_o refine_a design_n than_o other_o 2_o king_n 10.16_o and_o to_o be_v much_o take_v up_o about_o thing_n of_o a_o high_a nature_n than_o what_o relate_v to_o their_o body_n luk._n 18.10_o isai_n 58.2_o yet_o worldly_a their_o desire_n will_v be_v then_o satisfy_v till_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n close_o with_o and_o rest_n upon_o that_o infinite_a soul-satisfying_a good_a god_n reconcile_v to_o they_o in_o yet_o he_o that_o have_v most_o of_o that_o sort_n of_o wisdom_n be_v destitute_a of_o that_o which_o be_v from_o above_o remain_v as_o far_o distant_a from_o true_a happiness_n as_o he_o that_o have_v least_o of_o it_o the_o consideration_n whereof_o shall_v make_v man_n long_o for_o that_o excellent_a knowledge_n phil._n 3.8_o and_o not_o account_v any_o other_o wisdom_n their_o chief_a wisdom_n to_o walk_v aright_o before_o man_n and_o yet_o to_o put_v he_o off_o the_o opinion_n of_o his_o be_v happy_a without_o the_o save_a knowledge_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n this_o question_n be_v put_v concern_v he_o what_o have_v the_o poor_a that_o know_v how_o to_o walk_v before_o the_o live_n to_o wit_n nothing_o to_o make_v he_o happy_a except_o he_o know_v the_o way_n of_o and_o soon_o evanish_v which_o ought_v to_o be_v often_o consider_v as_o a_o mean_a to_o draw_v man_n heart_n from_o seek_v happiness_n here_o and_o move_v he_o to_o provide_v for_o a_o better_a earthly_a before_o they_o seek_v any_o other_o happiness_n than_o what_o the_o earth_n can_v afford_v they_o will_v place_v it_o in_o provide_v for_o these_o they_o be_v to_o leave_v behind_o they_o every_o man_n be_v post_v as_o the_o last_o word_n in_o the_o verse_n signify_v towards_o that_o state_n therefore_o he_o shall_v improve_v all_o his_o strength_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o this_o life_n for_o encouragement_n in_o his_o duty_n hence_o learn_v 1._o the_o lord_n liberality_n to_o man_n manifest_v in_o the_o variety_n of_o the_o outward_a comfort_n of_o this_o life_n shall_v be_v insufficiency_n of_o these_o pretence_n or_o objection_n which_o man_n often_o make_v the_o ground_n of_o their_o delay_n or_o neglect_v altogether_o that_o duty_n and_o these_o objection_n be_v take_v from_o the_o probability_n which_o man_n imagine_v of_o such_o sad_a accident_n to_o befall_v they_o as_o make_v they_o fear_v want_n and_o misery_n to_o themselves_o if_o they_o give_v of_o their_o substance_n to_o the_o poor_a as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n press_v the_o weakness_n of_o all_o which_o the_o wise_a man_n clear_v and_o prove_v first_o by_o a_o proverbial_a speech_n borrow_v from_o foolish_a husbandman_n the_o force_n whereof_o amount_n to_o this_o that_o as_o he_o who_o upon_o every_o appearance_n of_o rain_n or_o wind_n when_o he_o will_v not_o have_v they_o do_v forbear_v sow_v or_o reap_v will_v never_o it_o be_v propbable_a either_o sow_n or_o reap_v the_o application_n of_o which_o similitude_n be_v not_o express_v but_o may_v be_v easy_o gather_v from_o the_o scope_n thus_o even_o so_o he_o who_o look_v to_o all_o future_a contingency_n which_o may_v discourage_v or_o hinder_v he_o in_o his_o duty_n will_v ready_o never_o set_v about_o it_o and_o particular_o he_o that_o neglect_v charity_n to_o other_o when_o god_n call_v he_o to_o it_o because_o of_o every_o suggestion_n that_o his_o fortune_n may_v soon_o be_v exhaust_v will_v never_o cast_v his_o bread_n upon_o the_o water_n and_o so_o never_o reap_v the_o reward_n promise_v to_o the_o performer_n of_o that_o duty_n next_o he_o show_v the_o weakness_n of_o that_o sort_n of_o reason_v to_o deter_v man_n from_o their_o duty_n and_o prove_v they_o shall_v not_o neglect_v it_o though_o the_o appearance_n of_o success_n be_v never_o to_o small_a by_o a_o argument_n take_v from_o the_o unsearchable_a depth_n of_o god_n wisdom_n manifest_v in_o his_o ordinary_a operation_n and_o that_o man_n may_v be_v convince_v of_o their_o ignorance_n and_o so_o not_o despair_v of_o the_o performance_n of_o what_o god_n have_v promise_v though_o they_o see_v no_o appearance_n thereof_o he_o instance_n two_o thing_n very_o near_o to_o every_o man_n and_o yet_o clear_o understand_v by_o none_o the_o first_o instance_n be_v that_o man_n know_v not_o the_o way_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v they_o be_v ignorant_a how_o their_o own_o soul_n be_v form_v and_o unite_v to_o their_o body_n how_o they_o exist_v and_o act_v while_o they_o be_v in_o the_o body_n and_o when_o they_o be_v separat_fw-la from_o it_o the_o other_o be_v that_o none_o know_v how_o the_o bone_n do_v grow_v in_o the_o womb_n of_o she_o that_o be_v with_o child_n that_o be_v none_o do_v clear_o understand_v that_o wonderful_a work_n the_o form_n of_o his_o own_o body_n in_o the_o womb_n and_o from_o man_n ignorance_n of_o these_o thing_n he_o do_v infer_v that_o they_o can_v distinct_o conceive_v the_o way_n of_o god_n work_v for_o perform_v his_o promise_n to_o they_o that_o venture_v upon_o command_v duty_n when_o there_o be_v no_o probability_n of_o reward_n for_o so_o do_v and_o to_o help_v they_o the_o more_o confidenty_n to_o expect_v the_o promise_a reward_n of_o duty_n though_o there_o be_v no_o appearance_n of_o it_o be_v represent_v the_o lord_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o creator_n who_o give_v a_o be_v to_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o and_o therefore_o man_n may_v cheerful_o follow_v their_o duty_n to_o he_o and_o particular_o give_v of_o their_o substance_n for_o relief_n of_o his_o poor_a people_n though_o they_o see_v no_o probability_n of_o recompense_n for_o so_o do_v hence_o learn_v 1._o a_o faithful_a minister_n must_v not_o only_o press_v duty_n and_o enforce_v the_o same_o by_o reason_n but_o also_o he_o must_v careful_o foresee_v what_o reason_n people_n may_v pretend_v to_o hinder_v they_o from_o duty_n or_o discourage_v they_o in_o it_o and_o demonstrat_fw-la the_o levity_n and_o weakness_n of_o every_o thing_n that_o may_v have_v weight_n with_o they_o to_o make_v they_o delay_v their_o duty_n or_o neglect_v the_o opportunity_n thereof_o for_o so_o do_v this_o heavenly_a preacher_n here_o after_o he_o have_v by_o several_a reason_n press_v the_o duty_n of_o charity_n he_o discover_v the_o hindrance_n thereof_o and_o confute_v these_o objection_n which_o man_n ordinary_o make_v against_o it_o whereupon_o they_o neglect_v or_o delay_v it_o while_o he_o say_v he_o that_o observe_v the_o wind_n shall_v not_o sow_v and_o he_o that_o regard_v the_o cloud_n shall_v not_o reap_v etc._n etc._n 2._o we_o may_v expect_v that_o there_o will_v be_v often_o great_a appearance_n of_o bad_a success_n in_o the_o way_n of_o 〈◊〉_d duty_n and_o but_o small_a of_o the_o performance_n of_o promise_n that_o be_v make_v to_o the_o follow_v of_o it_o that_o so_o the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o respect_n to_o the_o command_n and_o the_o liveliness_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o the_o promise_n of_o reward_n may_v be_v manifest_v while_o notwithstanding_o of_o such_o discouragement_n we_o hold_v on_o
god_n who_o give_v it_o solomon_n have_v at_o length_n describe_v the_o dissolution_n of_o the_o earthly_a house_n of_o our_o tabernacle_n after_o death_n he_o give_v here_o a_o sum_n of_o man_n future_a state_n after_o death_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o two_o principal_a part_n whereof_o he_o be_v make_v up_o and_o first_o for_o his_o body_n which_o he_o call_v dust_n because_o it_o be_v his_o more_o noble_a part_n his_o soul_n call_v here_o the_o spirit_n because_o of_o the_o immaterial_a substance_n thereof_o and_o its_o resemblance_n to_o god_n the_o father_n of_o spirit_n it_o return_v to_o he_o who_o give_v it_o there_o be_v no_o ground_n to_o think_v he_o speak_v only_o of_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o godly_a but_o rather_o of_o the_o common_a state_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o all_o man_n after_o death_n neither_o be_v there_o any_o necessity_n to_o think_v that_o therefore_o every_o soul_n must_v go_v to_o heaven_n see_v the_o scripture_n be_v so_o clear_a to_o the_o contrary_a but_o every_o soul_n be_v say_v to_o return_v to_o god_n because_o in_o the_o very_a moment_n of_o its_o separation_n from_o the_o body_n it_o must_v sist_z itself_o before_o he_o the_o death_n and_o they_o may_v lay_v down_o their_o body_n in_o the_o dust_n in_o hope_n of_o a_o glorious_a resurrection_n and_o this_o be_v the_o reference_n which_o this_o verse_n have_v to_o the_o scope_n express_v in_o the_o first_o word_n of_o the_o chapter_n hence_o learn_v 1._o although_o our_o body_n have_v some_o beauty_n and_o majesty_n imprint_v on_o they_o while_o the_o soul_n reside_v in_o they_o and_o they_o be_v act_v by_o it_o for_o which_o cause_n they_o be_v set_v out_o by_o these_o excellent_a similitude_n former_o mention_v yet_o of_o themselves_o they_o be_v but_o dust_n
