the_o profit_n he_o receive_v from_o his_o son_n labour_n he_o will_v never_o have_v permit_v they_o to_o leave_v his_o family_n nor_o to_o enjoy_v any_o thing_n of_o their_o own_o but_o will_v have_v keep_v they_o like_o slave_n as_o long_o as_o they_o live_v if_o you_o affirm_v that_o he_o may_v have_v do_v so_o if_o he_o have_v please_v and_o that_o the_o son_n have_v no_o lawful_a mean_n to_o help_v themselves_o since_o he_o only_o be_v judge_n whether_o ever_o he_o think_v fit_a to_o set_v they_o free_a or_o not_o you_o yourself_o have_v already_o grant_v the_o contrary_a when_o you_o affirm_v that_o a_o father_n have_v no_o right_a to_o sell_v his_o child_n as_o a_o slave_n and_o then_o sure_o he_o can_v have_v as_o little_a right_n to_o use_v he_o so_o himself_o but_o as_o for_o what_o you_o say_v against_o that_o natural_a equality_n of_o child_n to_o their_o parent_n consider_v as_o man_n you_o may_v easy_o have_v understand_v it_o if_o your_o thought_n be_v not_o so_o whole_o take_v up_o with_o this_o transcendent_a imaginary_a empire_n of_o father_n in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n as_o if_o they_o be_v some_o what_o more_o than_o men._n for_o pray_v tell_v i_o be_v they_o not_o equal_a who_o have_v the_o same_o right_n from_o god_n to_o the_o same_o thing_n for_o if_o father_n have_v a_o right_a to_o live_v and_o be_v preserve_v so_o likewise_o have_v the_o child_n and_o if_o they_o have_v a_o right_n to_o the_o end_n they_o have_v likewise_o the_o same_o to_o the_o mean_n necessary_a thereunto_o such_o as_o be_v food_n raiment_n freedom_n from_o slavery_n etc._n etc._n and_o if_o they_o be_v thus_o equal_a they_o must_v likewise_o when_o they_o attain_v to_o year_n of_o discretion_n be_v endue_v with_o a_o power_n of_o judge_v for_o themselves_o concern_v what_o thing_n be_v necessary_a to_o their_o happiness_n and_o preservation_n and_o what_o tend_v to_o their_o misery_n or_o destruction_n and_o consequent_o may_v very_o well_o judge_v whether_o their_o father_n treat_v they_o kind_o or_o cruel_o for_o if_o the_o father_n in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n in_o the_o sole_a judge_n of_o the_o mean_n that_o conduce_v to_o his_o son_n happiness_n and_o preservation_n without_o his_o consent_n he_o may_v determine_v that_o poverty_n slavery_n and_o torment_n shall_v be_v fit_a mean_n and_o conduce_v to_o this_o end_n which_o be_v against_o sense_n and_o reason_n and_o though_o i_o grant_v that_o son_n may_v sometime_o be_v mistake_v in_o the_o true_a mean_n that_o may_v lead_v to_o these_o great_a end_n of_o life_n yet_o do_v not_o this_o take_v away_o their_o right_n of_o judge_v for_o themselves_o any_o more_o than_o it_o do_v the_o same_o right_n from_o their_o father_n who_o as_o man_n be_v also_o liable_a to_o the_o like_a mistake_n neither_o do_v any_o slave_n or_o subject_n ever_o give_v up_o his_o will_n so_o total_o to_o his_o master_n or_o monarch_n as_o absolute_o to_o renounce_v all_o right_n to_o happiness_n and_o self_n preservation_n or_o to_o the_o mean_n that_o may_v conduce_v thereunto_o but_o i_o think_v we_o have_v sufficient_o debate_v this_o great_a point_n of_o the_o natural_a power_n of_o father_n over_o their_o child_n and_o therefore_o let_v we_o in_o the_o next_o place_n consider_v whether_o child_n may_v not_o upon_o these_o principle_n in_o some_o case_n make_v use_v also_o of_o self_n defence_n even_o against_o their_o father_n if_o they_o can_v otherwise_o avoid_v certain_a ruin_n and_o destruction_n therefore_o i_o will_v first_o ask_v you_o what_o you_o think_v of_o this_o case_n a_o son_n in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n be_v separate_v from_o his_o father_n family_n and_o have_v child_n and_o house_n of_o his_o own_o what_o shall_v he_o do_v in_o case_n his_o father_n by_o the_o evil_a suggestion_n of_o a_o stepmother_n or_o other_o wicked_a person_n be_v so_o far_o incense_v against_o his_o son_n as_o to_o send_v man_n to_o burn_v his_o house_n plunder_v he_o of_o his_o good_n and_o destroy_v his_o plantation_n m._n if_o the_o son_n be_v absolute_o set_v free_a from_o his_o father_n family_n and_o power_n with_o his_o consent_n i_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o such_o a_o son_n may_v resist_v those_o person_n his_o father_n send_v to_o ruin_v he_o and_o his_o family_n and_o may_v repel_v their_o violence_n by_o force_n but_o i_o do_v not_o allow_v the_o son_n the_o same_o power_n to_o resist_v the_o person_n of_o the_o father_n if_o he_o shall_v come_v himself_o thus_o to_o destroy_v he_o f._n why_o so_o do_v you_o think_v a_o father_n by_o be_v so_o have_v any_o great_a right_o to_o destroy_v his_o son_n and_o ruin_n his_o family_n then_o a_o stranger_n m._n no_o but_o because_o the_o person_n of_o a_o father_n ought_v always_o to_o be_v esteem_v by_o the_o son_n as_o sacred_a as_o his_o natural_a prince_n and_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v a_o right_a to_o resist_v his_o father_n by_o force_n he_o may_v happen_v to_o kill_v he_o in_o the_o scuffle_n which_o will_v be_v a_o sin_n against_o nature_n f._n well_o suppose_v the_o worst_a will_v this_o be_v more_o a_o sin_n against_o nature_n than_o to_o suffer_v himself_o wife_n and_o innocent_a child_n to_o be_v turn_v out_o of_o all_o they_o have_v and_o left_a to_o perish_v by_o hunger_n and_o cold_a st._n paul_n say_v that_o he_o that_o do_v not_o provide_v for_o his_o family_n be_v worse_a than_o a_o infidel_n and_o i_o think_v so_o will_v the_o son_n be_v if_o for_o fear_n of_o hurt_v his_o father_n person_n he_o shall_v permit_v all_o his_o family_n to_o be_v expose_v to_o certain_a beggary_n and_o ruin_n m._n this_o precept_n of_o st._n paul_n oblige_v only_o when_o a_o man_n may_v provide_v for_o his_o family_n by_o lawful_a mean_n but_o not_o when_o it_o can_v be_v procure_v but_o by_o do_v what_o be_v unlawful_a as_o i_o take_v this_o resistance_n of_o the_o person_n of_o the_o father_n to_o be_v f._n i_o grant_v indeed_o that_o a_o father_n act_v as_o such_o be_v not_o to_o be_v resist_v even_o when_o he_o correct_v his_o son_n but_o i_o suppose_v you_o will_v not_o say_v that_o in_o the_o case_n i_o put_v he_o act_v as_o a_o father_n but_o a_o enemy_n when_o he_o go_v about_o without_o any_o just_a occasion_n to_o kill_v or_o ruin_v he_o unless_o you_o can_v suppose_v that_o the_o will_v to_o preserve_v and_o destroy_v can_v consist_v together_o in_o the_o same_o subject_a neither_o can_v you_o affirm_v that_o the_o father_n have_v any_o right_a to_o deal_v thus_o wicked_o and_o violent_o towards_o his_o son_n and_o his_o innocent_a family_n by_o what_o law_n then_o must_v the_o son_n be_v oblige_v to_o sacrifice_v his_o own_o life_n and_o that_o of_o wife_n and_o child_n and_o all_o that_o he_o have_v to_o this_o imaginary_a duty_n m._n there_o seem_v to_o i_o two_o good_a reason_n for_o it_o the_o first_o be_v that_o gratitude_n which_o the_o son_n must_v always_o owe_v his_o father_n for_o his_o be_v and_o education_n and_o therefore_o if_o he_o give_v up_o his_o wife_n child_n and_o all_o that_o he_o have_v to_o his_o will_n it_o will_v scarce_o be_v a_o sufficient_a requital_n for_o all_o the_o benefit_n he_o have_v receive_v from_o he_o the_o second_o be_v because_o no_o circumstance_n whatsoever_o can_v take_v off_o or_o obliterate_v this_o relation_n and_o tho'_o it_o be_v true_a your_o father_n whilst_o act_v thus_o do_v not_o deal_v with_o you_o as_o a_o father_n but_o a_o enemy_n yet_o he_o be_v still_o your_o father_n and_o you_o be_v and_o will_v be_v always_o his_o
not_o only_o kingly_a power_n in_o general_n but_o also_o the_o succession_n to_o it_o by_o the_o elder_a son_n or_o his_o next_o brother_n be_v of_o divine_a right_n or_o institution_n or_o else_o all_o that_o you_o urge_v concern_v the_o natural_a right_n of_o dominion_n of_o cain_n over_o abel_n be_v to_o no_o purpose_n but_o now_o you_o insist_v that_o succession_n by_o a_o testament_n or_o will_v of_o the_o father_n be_v also_o as_o much_o by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n as_o the_o other_o in_o which_o i_o think_v you_o be_v very_o much_o mistake_v since_o the_o right_n of_o bequeath_v kingdom_n or_o any_o thing_n else_o by_o testament_n be_v neither_o prescribe_v by_o the_o reveal_v will_n of_o god_n nor_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n since_o all_o settle_a property_n in_o land_n or_o good_n before_o the_o institution_n of_o a_o civil_a government_n proceed_v only_o from_o occupancy_n or_o possession_n must_v cease_v in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n with_o the_o life_n of_o the_o occupant_a or_o possessor_n therefore_o in_o that_o state_n a_o testament_n can_v take_v place_n by_o the_o testator_n death_n since_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o die_v his_o right_n in_o the_o thing_n bequeath_v be_v quite_o lose_v and_o extinguish_v so_o that_o the_o dead_a not_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o any_o thing_n the_o legatee_n can_v sustain_v the_o person_n of_o the_o testator_n who_o right_a cease_v before_o that_o of_o the_o legate_n can_v take_v place_n and_o therefore_o the_o testament_n or_o disposition_n of_o such_o thing_n may_v then_o without_o any_o crime_n be_v neglect_v or_o alter_v by_o the_o survivor_n unless_o all_o those_o who_o pretend_v a_o interest_n in_o it_o do_v agree_v to_o it_o or_o swear_v to_o see_v it_o fulfil_v during_o the_o testator_n life_n time_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n we_o find_v abraham_n bind_v his_o servant_n that_o rule_v over_o his_o house_n with_o a_o oath_n not_o to_o take_v a_o wife_n for_o his_o son_n of_o the_o daughter_n of_o the_o land_n 3._o and_o jacob_n take_v a_o oath_n of_o joseph_n 49.29_o not_o to_o bury_v he_o in_o egypt_n because_o they_o doubt_v whether_o they_o can_v oblige_v their_o son_n or_o servant_n to_o do_v it_o by_o their_o testament_n so_o that_o it_o appear_v evident_a to_o i_o that_o the_o power_n of_o make_v testament_n and_o bequeath_v land_n or_o good_n be_v but_o a_o consequence_n of_o that_o propriety_n in_o land_n good_n or_o dominion_n which_o arise_v from_o compact_n or_o common_a consent_n in_o a_o kingdom_n or_o commonwealth_n after_o it_o be_v institute_v as_o i_o think_v i_o be_o able_a to_o prove_v whenever_o you_o please_v to_o discourse_v with_o i_o far_o about_o it_o but_o as_o for_o the_o right_n of_o bequeath_v crown_n or_o kingdom_n by_o testament_n as_o i_o will_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o some_o kingdom_n may_v have_v be_v bequeathable_a by_o their_o original_a constitution_n and_o other_o become_v so_o by_o custom_n yet_o i_o can_v grant_v that_o this_o right_n belong_v to_o the_o prince_n or_o monarch_n by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n or_o nature_n but_o proceed_v pure_o from_o the_o receive_a law_n or_o continue_a custom_n of_o that_o kingdom_n so_o that_o you_o must_v either_o confess_v that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o a_o divine_a right_n of_o succession_n or_o else_o it_o be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o signify_v as_o much_o as_o nothing_o since_o humane_a law_n or_o constitution_n can_v alter_v it_o or_o take_v it_o away_o so_o that_o after_o all_o this_o pother_n about_o this_o divine_a right_n it_o be_v not_o so_o good_a as_o a_o old_a estate_n tail_n which_o former_o no_o fine_a can_v bar_v and_o i_o must_v far_o tell_v you_o that_o i_o can_v assent_v to_o your_o opinion_n that_o succession_n by_o a_o will_n or_o a_o testament_n be_v so_o certain_a as_o that_o by_o inheritance_n since_o all_o such_o testament_n must_v depend_v upon_o the_o credit_n of_o the_o witness_n who_o credit_n may_v often_o be_v question_v by_o the_o subject_n and_o who_o may_v very_o well_o for_o their_o own_o end_n make_v a_o young_a son_n to_o have_v the_o whole_a or_o at_o least_o a_o share_n in_o the_o kingdom_n to_o who_o his_o father_n never_o intend_v any_o and_o which_o be_v likewise_o more_o easy_a to_o be_v do_v before_o such_o time_n as_o write_a will_n or_o testament_n solemn_o publish_v according_a to_o form_n of_o law_n come_v in_o use_n but_o because_o you_o suppose_v that_o the_o natural_a law_n of_o succession_n to_o kingdom_n be_v so_o plain_a and_o certain_a that_o i_o may_v a_o little_a convince_v you_o of_o your_o mistake_n in_o this_o matter_n i_o shall_v for_o the_o present_a suppose_n that_o the_o succession_n of_o a_o elder_a son_n or_o brother_n be_v sufficient_o easy_a to_o be_v know_v yet_o i_o doubt_v it_o will_v not_o prove_v so_o in_o many_o other_o instance_n and_o therefore_o to_o let_v you_o see_v i_o do_v not_o make_v this_o scruple_n without_o cause_n suppose_v abel_n for_o
