May 1544 THE KINGES most roiall maiestie being informed that where by a statute made in the parliament holden at Westminster in the .xxxii. yere of his most noble reigne it was ordeined and enacted amonges other thinges that suche of his subiectes as be rehersed in the same may reteigne and kepe in their seruice certeine nombre of straungers whiche statute extendeth onely to strangiers borne in suche realmes dominions and countreis as be in leage and amitie with his highnes diuers of his graces said subiectes notwithstanding his proclamations heretofore made touching the warres and hostilitie at this time meued betwene his maiestie and the frenche king by reason wherof all frenchemen not being denizens may and ought to be reputed and taken for his gracis enemies the reteining and norishing of whom in this case weieth to no lesse then to the nourishying and meintenance of his maiesties enemies doo still kepe and enterteigne great multitudes of frenchemen not being denizens whiche for many respectes and considerations were mete to be expelled and auoyded out of this realme His maiestie therfore by the aduise of his most honorable counsaill straitly chargeth and commandeth that all maner of persons borne vnder the frenche kinges obeysaunce not being denizens shall departe and go out of this his highnes realme of England within .xx. dayes nexte after this presente proclamation made Excepte suche as in the meane time shall vpon speciall suite to his highnes be made denizens Vpon peyne that euery one of them doing contrary to this proclamation shal be furth with apprehended and eyther sent to his gracis Galeys there to be ordered as shall apperteigne or to be otherwayes vsed as the case shall requyre ¶ FVRTHERMORE his highnes considering the dangier of his lawes whiche his louing and obedient subiectes may incurre by entreteining of any frencheman not being denizen during the time of the warres betwene his maiestie and the frenche king straitly chargeth and commandeth all and singuler his subiectes of this his realme of Englande that they and euery of them within .xx. dayes nexte after this his maiesties proclamacion shal be made and publisshed shall expell and put out from their seruice families and wages all maner of frenchemen not being denizens and in no wise or by any colour respecte or meanes shall after the saide .xx. daies nexte after this present proclamacion reteine socour ayde comforte or meintein within this his highnes said realme of England any of the said frenchmen vpon peyne that euery one of them doing or attempting contrarie to this present proclamation or any parte therof shal be accompted taken accepted and reputed as an aydour fautour and succourer of the kinges enemies and shall haue and suffre suche punisshement for the same as the lawes of this realme do in suche cases appoynte and determine accordyngly GOD SAVE THE KYNG Tho.
