that_o mean_n have_v some_o present_a ease_n though_o the_o cure_n be_v not_o wrought_v so_o it_o be_v with_o conscience_n when_o once_o the_o mouth_n of_o conscience_n be_v open_v if_o a_o man_n do_v not_o feed_v it_o it_o will_v devour_v he_o and_o therefore_o man_n in_o this_o case_n do_v feed_v conscience_n with_o duty_n which_o for_o present_a procure_v they_o ease_v though_o the_o cure_n be_v not_o wrought_v and_o indeed_o to_o speak_v truth_n such_o man_n do_v not_o desire_v the_o cure_n they_o desire_v ease_n but_o not_o the_o cure_n peace_n not_o purge_v quiet_v not_o heal_v they_o will_v willing_o be_v rid_v of_o the_o pain_n but_o keep_v the_o tooth_n of_o trouble_n but_o keep_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o evil_n cause_v not_o of_o the_o evil_n cause_v the_o cure_n will_v be_v as_o deadly_a to_o they_o as_o the_o wound_n to_o part_v with_o the_o sin_n as_o to_o endure_v the_o smart_n and_o therefore_o see_v there_o be_v a_o middle-way_n to_o be_v go_v that_o they_o may_v procure_v their_o present_a peace_n and_o yet_o keep_v their_o sin_n they_o will_v go_v that_o way_n and_o labour_n to_o still_o the_o clamour_n of_o conscience_n by_o bribe_v it_o with_o duty_n feed_v it_o with_o prayer_n that_o so_o they_o may_v procure_v peace_n and_o yet_o keep_v their_o sin_n other_o end_n there_o be_v which_o be_v more_o low_a than_o the_o former_a 1._o for_o ostentation_n and_o pride_n of_o gift_n a_o corrupt_a heart_n may_v have_v the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n though_o not_o the_o grace_n of_o prayer_n yea_o and_o be_v more_o eminent_a therein_o than_o they_o who_o have_v the_o grace_n of_o prayer_n they_o may_v exceed_v other_o in_o expression_n who_o yet_o do_v exceed_v they_o in_o affection_n and_o for_o pride_n ostentation_n in_o gift_n a_o corrupt_a heart_n may_v abound_v in_o duty_n and_o performance_n 2._o for_o affection_n credit_n esteem_v of_o the_o world_n that_o they_o may_v be_v account_v holy_a man_n to_o have_v a_o name_n there_o be_v vile_a wretch_n who_o make_v god_n religion_n holy_a duty_n to_o serve_v their_o own_o base_a end_n who_o make_v they_o but_o a_o stalking-horse_n the_o better_a to_o pursue_v their_o own_o game_n their_o own_o gain_n like_a watermen_n who_o row_n one_o way_n but_o look_v another_o they_o row_v towards_o heaven_n in_o outward_a work_n with_o the_o oar_n of_o religion_n but_o they_o look_v towards_o the_o world_n their_o own_o end_n in_o heart_n their_o eye_n be_v after_o their_o gain_n who_o will_v show_v they_o any_o good_a their_o foot_n be_v go_v towards_o zoar_n with_o lot_n wife_n but_o their_o heart_n towards_o sodom_n they_o serve_v god_n with_o their_o body_n but_o mammon_n with_o their_o spirit_n 4._o that_o by_o this_o mean_n they_o may_v procure_v god_n blessing_n on_o they_o in_o this_o life_n oh_o think_v they_o if_o i_o do_v not_o pray_v god_n will_v not_o bless_v i_o in_o my_o shop_n to_o day_n etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o do_v it_o to_o procure_v have_v two_o other_o thing_n to_o do_v more_o before_o we_o come_v to_o application_n 1._o to_o show_v you_o what_o be_v the_o ground_n that_o a_o corrupt_a heart_n may_v so_o abound_v in_o outward_a performance_n 2._o where_o the_o fault_n be_v or_o how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o a_o man_n may_v do_v thus_o much_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o be_v unsound_a yet_o miss_v of_o heaven_n at_o last_o we_o will_v begin_v with_o the_o first_o of_o these_o two_o which_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n propound_v 3._o what_o the_o ground_n be_v whence_o it_o arise_v that_o a_o corrupt_a heart_n may_v abound_v in_o outward_a performance_n 1._o the_o first_o ground_n be_v natural_a conscience_n or_o that_o inbred_a light_n which_o be_v in_o the_o conscience_n of_o man_n by_o nature_n every_o man_n have_v a_o conscience_n in_o he_o and_o this_o conscience_n do_v acknowledge_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n one_o who_o be_v be_v of_o being_n cause_v of_o cause_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o thereupon_o that_o this_o god_n be_v to_o be_v worship_v and_o serve_v by_o the_o creature_n though_o conscience_n can_v discover_v the_o true_a god_n or_o the_o true_a worship_n caligula_n who_o labour_v all_o he_o can_v to_o blow_v out_o this_o candle_n and_o to_o strengthen_v his_o atheism_n by_o argument_n and_o reason_n yet_o when_o it_o thunder_v he_o run_v under_o a_o bed_n his_o fear_n and_o guilty_a conscience_n tell_v he_o of_o some_o divine_a power_n which_o he_o can_v not_o withstand_v another_o who_o labour_v the_o like_a and_o though_o he_o have_v wrought_v out_o all_o faith_n yet_o he_o have_v not_o wrought_v out_o all_o fear_n he_o still_o fear_v as_o he_o will_v say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o what_o if_o there_o shall_v prove_v to_o be_v a_o god_n at_o last_o now_o then_o there_o be_v such_o light_n in_o conscience_n as_o to_o discover_v there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o conscience_n thereupon_o conclude_v this_o god_n must_v be_v worship_v by_o the_o help_n of_o further_a light_n the_o light_n of_o the_o word_n the_o light_n of_o the_o work_n the_o light_n of_o good_a example_n the_o light_n of_o good_a education_n together_o with_o the_o implantation_n of_o some_o common_a and_o general_a principle_n whereby_o conscience_n be_v strengthen_v from_o above_o a_o man_n may_v be_v enable_v to_o do_v much_o in_o the_o way_n wherefore_o they_o be_v undertake_v 2._o outward_a pressure_n upon_o the_o body_n of_o man_n may_v be_v another_o ground_n to_o prevail_v with_o unsound_a heart_n to_o do_v much_o in_o outward_a which_o yet_o never_o care_v for_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o law_n both_o these_o you_o shall_v see_v in_o the_o scribe_n and_o
he_o but_o positive_o inflict_v of_o his_o displeasure_n upon_o his_o soul_n yet_o all_o that_o satan_n can_v do_v by_o himself_o all_o that_o he_o can_v do_v by_o his_o friend_n who_o join_v with_o
