compassion_n howbeit_o the_o pain_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n be_v not_o thus_o end_v there_o be_v yet_o other_o without_o all_o comparison_n far_o great_a than_o these_o to_o wit_n the_o pain_n of_o his_o bless_a soul_n for_o all_o these_o pain_n abovenamed_n do_v for_o the_o most_o part_n appertain_v to_o the_o pain_n of_o the_o cross_n wherein_o his_o body_n suffer_v outward_o but_o beside_o this_o visible_a cross_n torment_v the_o invisible_a cross_n of_o our_o saviour_n wherewith_o his_o soul_n be_v torment_v there_o be_v yet_o a_o other_o invisible_a cross_n wherein_o his_o most_o holy_a soul_n be_v crucify_v within_o his_o body_n have_v also_o four_o arm_n and_o four_o nail_n which_o be_v four_o dolorous_a consideration_n and_o these_o be_v a_o far_o great_a torment_fw-mi unto_o he_o than_o theverie_n outward_a cross_n for_o first_o of_o all_o there_o be_v represent_v unto_o he_o all_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n that_o be_v present_a past_a and_o to_o love_n and_o zeal_n unto_o the_o honour_n of_o his_o father_n what_o a_o unspekeable_a grief_n be_v it_o to_o behold_v such_o a_o infinite_a number_n of_o abomination_n and_o offence_n commit_v against_o so_o high_a a_o majesty_n for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o sin_n of_o one_o man_n alone_o be_v able_a to_o torment_fw-mi he_o more_o than_o all_o the_o torment_n of_o the_o cross_n the_o which_o be_v so_o what_o a_o pass_v great_a grief_n will_v the_o sin_n of_o all_o man_n and_o of_o all_o world_n cause_n unto_o he_o suerly_n there_o be_v no_o understand_v able_a to_o comprehend_v the_o pass_v greatness_n of_o this_o grief_n second_o there_o be_v also_o represent_v unto_o he_o the_o ingratitude_n and_o damnation_n of_o many_o man_n and_o especial_o of_o many_o wicked_a christian_n which_o will_v never_o acknowledge_v this_o singular_a benefit_n nor_o endeavour_n to_o profit_n and_o help_v themselves_o with_o this_o so_o great_a and_o so_o costly_a a_o remedy_n as_o he_o there_o prepare_v for_o they_o this_o be_v also_o a_o far_o great_a torment_fw-mi unto_o he_o than_o the_o torment_fw-mi of_o the_o cross_n for_o it_o be_v a_o great_a pain_n unto_o a_o labourer_n to_o be_v deny_v his_o day_n wage_n and_o the_o fruit_n of_o his_o labour_n than_o the_o very_a labour_n itself_o albeit_o it_o be_v very_o great_a and_o for_o this_o cause_n our_o saviour_n complain_v by_o his_o prophet_n esaie_n of_o this_o injury_n unto_o his_o father_n sayeinge_v i_o saiede_n in_o vain_a have_v i_o travail_v in_o vain_a 49.4_o esa_n 49.4_o and_o without_o cause_n have_v i_o waste_v my_o strengthe_n and_o he_o complain_v of_o this_o ingratitude_n not_o only_o to_o his_o father_n but_o also_o even_o unto_o man_n themselves_o by_o s._n bernarde_n sayeinge_v o_o man_n bernarde_n s._n bernarde_n consider_v what_o cruel_a torment_n i_o suffer_v for_o thy_o sake_n there_o be_v no_o pain_n that_o torment_v i_o so_o extreme_o as_o thy_o represent_v unto_o he_o the_o horrible_a sin_n of_o that_o miserable_a people_n of_o jewrie_n and_o the_o terrible_a punishment_n that_o be_v prepare_v for_o they_o within_o a_o short_a time_n after_o which_o undoutedlie_o be_v a_o great_a grief_n and_o torment_fw-mi unto_o he_o than_o the_o cup_n of_o his_o bitter_a passion_n for_o if_o the_o prophet_n jeremie_n signify_v that_o the_o sin_n which_o the_o jew_n commit_v in_o goinge_v about_o to_o kill_v he_o grieve_v he_o much_o more_o than_o his_o own_o very_a death_n what_o a_o grief_n will_v it_o be_v to_o our_o saviour_n who_o have_v without_o all_o comparison_n far_o great_a charity_n and_o grace_n than_o the_o prophet_n jeremie_n there_o be_v moreover_o represent_v unto_o he_o the_o grief_n and_o doleful_a sword_n of_o sorrow_n he_o love_v she_o most_o of_o all_o creature_n now_o these_o four_o consideration_n and_o grief_n be_v as_o it_o be_v four_o arm_n of_o a_o other_o inward_a cross_n wherewith_o his_o bless_a soul_n be_v likewise_o crucify_v within_o his_o holy_a bodic_n so_o that_o our_o saviour_n suffer_v that_o day_n the_o pain_n and_o torment_n of_o two_o cross_n the_o one_o visible_a and_o tho'other_n invisible_a upon_o the_o one_o cross_n his_o body_n suffer_v outward_o and_o upon_o the_o other_o his_n soul_n suffer_v much_o more_o inward_o now_o how_o pass_v great_a the_o grief_n be_v which_o proceided_a of_o these_o four_o consideration_n there_o be_v no_o understand_v able_a to_o comprehend_v it_o and_o yet_o we_o may_v conjecture_v somewhat_o thereof_o by_o that_o outward_a show_n of_o his_o bloody_a sweat_n in_o the_o garden_n whosoever_o then_o shall_v attentivelie_o consider_v all_o these_o cause_n shall_v clear_o see_v how_o pass_v great_a the_o pain_n and_o torment_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v which_o be_v the_o intent_n of_o this_o first_o manner_n of_o meditatinge_v upon_o his_o most_o bitter_a passion_n howbeit_o this_o must_v not_o be_v the_o final_a end_n of_o this_o exercise_n but_o rather_o it_o must_v be_v use_v as_o a_o mean_a to_o come_v to_o other_o end_n to_o wit_n to_o understande_v hereby_o what_o a_o pass_v great_a love_n he_o bear_v unto_o thou_o that_o will_v suffer_v so_o much_o for_o thou_o and_o what_o a_o great_a benefit_n he_o do_v unto_o thou_o in_o byeinge_v thou_o with_o so_o dear_a a_o price_n and_o how_o much_o thou_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v for_o he_o who_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v so_o much_o for_o thou_o and_o above_o all_o this_o how_o great_o thou_o ought_v to_o abhor_v thy_o sin_n and_o be_v grieve_v with_o they_o since_o they_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o his_o so_o long_o and_o painful_a martyrdom_n now_o for_o these_o four_o end_n whereof_o we_o will_v entreat_v in_o the_o chapter_n follow_v serve_v this_o manner_n of_o contemplation_n whereby_o it_o appear_v that_o this_o first_o manner_n of_o meditatinge_v by_o way_n of_o take_v compassion_n of_o the_o bitter_a pain_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o mean_a or_o a_o ladder_n unto_o all_o the_o other_o and_o for_o this_o very_a cause_n s._n bonaventure_n make_v great_a account_n of_o this_o manner_n of_o meditation_n upon_o the_o passion_n because_o it_o be_v sensible_o see_v that_o this_o manner_n of_o meditation_n open_v the_o way_n unto_o all_o the_o other_o manner_n of_o meditatinge_v upon_o the_o same_o and_o the_o same_o holy_a father_n saiethe_v that_o for_o this_o purpose_n it_o shall_v be_v a_o great_a help_n also_o for_o we_o to_o take_v some_o discipline_n which_o may_v cause_v some_o smart_n and_o do_v no_o hurt_n to_o the_o body_n that_o so_o by_o the_o feelinge_n of_o that_o so_o little_a pain_n of_o whip_n and_o scourginge_v ourselves_o we_o may_v the_o better_o lift_v up_o our_o spirit_n to_o consider_v somewhat_o of_o the_o pass_v great_a pain_n and_o torment_n which_o the_o most_o tender_a body_n of_o our_o sweite_n saviour_n suffer_v for_o our_o sake_n how_o in_o the_o passion_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n appear_v very_o manifest_o what_o a_o greyvous_a thing_n sin_n be_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o almighty_a god_n §_o ii_o the_o second_o point_n that_o we_o have_v to_o consider_v in_o the_o passion_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v the_o greiousnes_n of_o our_o sin_n whereby_o to_o move_v our_o heart_n to_o be_v sorrowful_a for_o they_o and_o to_o abhor_v they_o wherefore_o we_o must_v understande_v that_o as_o all_o the_o holy_a learned_a father_n do_v affirm_v our_o sin_n be_v the_o very_a cause_n why_o the_o son_n of_o almighty_a god_n suffer_v such_o grievous_a pain_n torment_n
