command_n when_o he_o be_v not_o guilty_a of_o any_o gross_a act_n of_o murder_n and_o the_o seven_o when_o he_o do_v not_o actual_o commit_v adultery_n or_o fornication_n not_o know_v or_o consider_v that_o a_o look_v arise_v from_o the_o flame_n of_o lust_n within_o be_v a_o breach_n of_o that_o command_n and_o so_o proportionable_o in_o other_o command_v even_o as_o the_o pharisee_n conform_v the_o law_n in_o the_o meaning_n thereof_o to_o their_o own_o practice_n and_o not_o their_o practice_n to_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o law_n 2._o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o way_n of_o god_n righteousness_n and_o of_o that_o which_o give_v the_o conscience_n solid_a ground_n to_o speak_v peace_n many_o if_o they_o have_v a_o honest_a meaning_n in_o their_o pray_n read_v of_o the_o scripture_n wait_v on_o public_a ordinance_n if_o they_o put_v their_o body_n to_o some_o sort_n of_o penance_n or_o be_v ready_a to_o give_v if_o it_o be_v the_o half_a of_o their_o estate_n to_o have_v their_o soul_n safe_a and_o if_o they_o have_v a_o sort_n of_o seriousness_n in_o all_o this_o think_v that_o all_o be_v well_o with_o they_o and_o that_o they_o have_v a_o very_a good_a conscience_n if_o this_o piece_n of_o ignorance_n be_v well_o discern_v never_o one_o soul_n out_o of_o christ_n will_v have_v peace_n because_o none_o out_o of_o christ_n have_v solid_a ground_n of_o peace_n for_o none_o have_v their_o heart_n sprinkle_v from_o a_o evil_a conscience_n but_o these_o that_o be_v in_o he_o 3._o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o their_o particular_a case_n they_o know_v not_o what_o sin_n they_o be_v guilty_a of_o nor_o what_o conscience_n say_v of_o they_o they_o think_v it_o speak_v better_a thing_n to_o they_o then_o indeed_o it_o do_v some_o guess_n at_o it_o some_o misinterpret_v it_o and_o some_o repeal_v it_o whereas_o if_o they_o be_v sober_o reflect_v on_o and_o impartial_o look_v to_o their_o manner_n of_o proceed_v in_o every_o thing_n they_o will_v see_v that_o they_o mistake_v their_o conscience_n exceed_o this_o then_o be_v the_o first_o defect_n viz._n a_o defect_n in_o the_o judgement_n the_o second_o be_v a_o defect_n as_o to_o singleness_n and_o sincerity_n in_o the_o natural_a man_n best_a condition_n such_o be_v never_o single_a when_o at_o their_o very_a best_a even_o when_o they_o be_v most_o serious_a in_o prayer_n they_o be_v but_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n when_o they_o fast_o and_o give_v alm_n and_o the_o like_a it_o be_v that_o they_o may_v have_v some_o ground_n for_o a_o good_a opinion_n of_o themselves_o or_o that_o other_o may_v have_v a_o good_a opinion_n of_o they_o be_v always_o act_v from_o selfy_a motive_n and_o for_o self-end_n a_o 3d._a defect_n be_v the_o want_n of_o unbiased_a affection_n these_o be_v partial_a and_o bias_v will_v put_v the_o man_n to_o reason_n and_o dispute_v for_o the_o silence_v of_o his_o conscience_n and_o this_o eye_n not_o be_v single_a the_o whole_a body_n be_v full_a of_o darkness_n affection_n be_v incline_v or_o swey_v to_o this_o or_o that_o side_n they_o will_v seek_v to_o â—way_n conscience_n to_o that_o side_n they_o incline_v to_o this_o be_v it_o that_o make_v some_o to_o follow_v after_o and_o to_o haunt_v the_o company_n of_o those_o who_o be_v erroneous_a in_o their_o judgement_n notwithstanding_o that_o they_o have_v good_a reason_n to_o the_o contrary_n lay_v before_o they_o from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o they_o reject_v and_o that_o without_o challenge_n be_v quite_o bias_v and_o prejudge_v in_o their_o affection_n thus_o many_o natural_a man_n lay_v this_o for_o a_o conclusion_n that_o so_o much_o only_o be_v holiness_n and_o that_o no_o more_o be_v needful_a and_o what_o be_v more_o be_v but_o superfluous_a niceness_n and_o so_o they_o prejudge_v their_o conscience_n by_o that_o 4._o it_o be_v defective_a in_o this_o that_o it_o maintain_v not_o its_o peace_n nor_o answer_v its_o challenge_n from_o christ_n blood_n it_o be_v not_o sprinkle_v with_o clean_a but_o with_o foul_a water_n to_o say_v so_o it_o may_v be_v it_o put_v the_o man_n to_o take_v on_o some_o resolution_n or_o to_o come_v under_o some_o vow_n as_o to_o somewhat_o that_o it_o may_v be_v be_v no_o command_v duty_n of_o religion_n not_o have_v any_o valuable_a influence_n upon_o it_o or_o he_o will_v as_o it_o be_v sprinkle_v his_o conscience_n with_o his_o tear_n thus_o many_o will_v grant_v that_o they_o have_v sin_v but_o withal_o they_o think_v and_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v that_o they_o on_o any_o of_o these_o but_o though_o it_o have_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o a_o break_a and_o contrite_a spirit_n to_o offer_v to_o god_n yet_o it_o do_v not_o rest_n on_o that_o nor_o on_o any_o duty_n token_n when_o man_n either_o have_v only_a challenge_n and_o no_o peace_n or_o only_a peace_n and_o no_o challenge_n at_o all_o as_o it_o be_v also_o a_o evil_a token_n to_o offer_v to_o maintain_v peace_n by_o shift_a challenge_n or_o to_o give_v over_o press_v after_o and_o maintain_v of_o peace_n by_o give_v way_n to_o challenge_n but_o it_o be_v a_o good_a token_n when_o conscience_n can_v instance_n of_o david_n psal._n 51._o there_o be_v need_n therefore_o of_o continue_v in_o the_o fight_n and_o of_o draw_v conclusion_n from_o solid_a and_o undeniable_a premise_n and_o ground_n to_o quiet_a the_o conscience_n and_o ward_v off_o challenge_n so_o as_o they_o may_v not_o wound_v and_o quite_o mar_v peace_n as_o paul_n do_v rom._n 8._o 1_o 2._o it_o may_v have_v be_v say_v to_o he_o and_o intimation_n of_o pardon_n 3_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o believer_n quiet_a themselves_o positive_o by_o comfort_v &_o confirm_v themselves_o in_o the_o faith_n of_o what_o the_o promise_n speak_v and_o in_o the_o hope_n of_o what_o they_o have_v to_o expect_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o former_a and_o this_o be_v that_o in_o the_o former_a we_o draw_v home_o answer_n from_o the_o ground_n of_o faith_n to_o ward_v off_o the_o dint_n and_o bitterness_n of_o challenge_n but_o that_o be_v not_o enough_o thorough_o to_o calm_v and_o settle_v the_o soul_n therefore_o the_o latter_a be_v also_o needful_a that_o the_o soul_n positive_o draw_v in_o peace_n and_o consolation_n to_o itself_o by_o believe_v which_o as_o it_o be_v philip._n 4._o be_v able_a to_o guard_v the_o heart_n and_o mind_n through_o christ_n jesus_n and_o we_o conceive_v this_o to_o be_v david_n exercise_n psal._n 51._o where_o by_o exercise_v his_o faith_n on_o the_o promise_n and_o on_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o messiah_n to_o be_v shed_v and_o by_o wrestle_v for_o the_o intimation_n of_o pardon_n and_o peace_n he_o labour_v not_o only_o to_o get_v his_o conscience_n calm_v but_o even_o fill_v with_o consolation_n and_o because_o the_o promise_n be_v often_o somewhat_o wersh_fw-mi and_o tasteless_a to_o say_v so_o if_o not_o season_v and_o quicken_v by_o god_n voice_n go_v along_o with_o they_o and_o put_v favour_n and_o life_n in_o they_o this_o be_v the_o voice_n of_o joy_n and_o gladness_n which_o he_o will_v so_o fain_o hear_v therefore_o the_o believer_n insist_o with_o sinner_n first_o to_o seek_v after_o peace_n and_o then_o to_o make_v application_n to_o christ_n or_o to_o think_v that_o first_o they_o must_v have_v all_o the_o requisit_n of_o a_o good_a spiritual_a frame_n and_o grace_n in_o the_o lively_a exercise_n before_o they_o adventure_v to_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n with_o confidence_n i_o grant_v these_o be_v very_o desirable_a and_o the_o soul_n desire_v after_o they_o very_o commendable_a yet_o if_o the_o believer_n resolve_v never_o to_o draw_v thus_o near_o till_o he_o be_v as_o he_o will_v be_v when_o shall_v he_o do_v it_o what_o if_o david_n have_v stand_v and_o stick_v at_o that_o psal._n 51_o he_o may_v have_v be_v keep_v a-back_a and_o so_o be_v unwashen_v all_o his_o day_n but_o know_v the_o way_n of_o god_n grace_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o his_o gracious_a covenant_n make_v with_o his_o people_n he_o step_v humble_o yet_o confident_o forward_a in_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n out_o over_o the_o sense_n of_o of_o wrath_n come_v under_o the_o shadow_n and_o shelter_v of_o this_o it_o present_o find_v ease_n and_o repose_v what_o shall_v i_o say_v what_o can_v i_o say_v word_n here_o may_v be_v swallow_v up_o from_o this_o proceed_v all_o the_o glorious_a privilege_n of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n possess_v and_o expect_v in_o hand_n and_o in_o hope_n 2_o it_o be_v excellency_n and_o efficacy_n harmless_a himself_o he_o love_v these_o quality_n and_o be_v able_a and_o willing_a to_o work_v they_o in_o these_o that_o come_v to_o he_o and_o such_o a_o high_a priest_n become_v we_o he_o be_v one_o that_o have_v compassion_n on_o the_o ignorant_a and_o such_o as_o be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n who_o be_v in_o all_o point_v tempt_v as_o we_o yet_o without_o sin_n that_o he_o may_v from_o his_o own_o experience_n the_o more_o kind_o and_o strong_o sympathize_v with_o his_o people_n and_o succour_v they_o in_o all_o their_o temptation_n a_o high_a priest_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o their_o infirmity_n the_o aâ—king_n of_o the_o least_o finger_n or_o toe_n in_o his_o mystical_a body_n stound_n up_o as_o it_o be_v to_o the_o very_a heart_n of_o he_o who_o be_v the_o head_n thereof_o and_o chap._n 2._o it_o behove_v he_o to_o be_v make_v like_o to_o his_o brethren_n that_o he_o may_v be_v a_o merciful_a and_o faithful_a high_a priest_n etc._n etc._n 4_o the_o excellency_n and_o efficacy_n of_o it_o appear_v in_o this_o even_o in_o the_o exceed_a great_a freeness_n of_o his_o apply_v this_o cure_n there_o be_v no_o more_o require_v but_o to_o come_v
