scatter_v over_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n it_o hence_o appear_v that_o they_o who_o assert_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o be_v this_o catholic_n church_n do_v thereby_o declare_v that_o there_o be_v no_o true_a christian_n in_o the_o world_n but_o the_o papist_n as_o we_o use_v to_o call_v they_o which_o seem_v to_o i_o very_o strange_a doctrine_n but_o yet_o may_v not_o a_o particular_a church_n be_v in_o some_o sense_n style_v catholic_n t._n yes_o proper_o enough_o as_o it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n hold_v the_o same_o faith_n with_o it_o and_o not_o schismatical_o divide_v from_o it_o and_o thus_o of_o old_a the_o church_n of_o rome_n may_v be_v style_v catholic_n and_o so_o may_v the_o church_n of_o ephesus_n of_o antioch_n or_o any_o other_o place_n to_o distinguish_v they_o from_o heretic_n and_o schismatic_n that_o make_v faction_n and_o party_n in_o their_o several_a church_n and_o separate_v from_o their_o own_o lawful_a bishop_n and_o pastor_n l._n be_v not_o those_o christian_a church_n which_o be_v common_o callâ—d_v reform_v church_n part_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n t._n yes_o they_o be_v the_o best_a and_o sound_a part_n of_o it_o l._n but_o why_o be_v they_o call_v protestant_a and_o reform_a t._n not_o to_o trouble_v you_o with_o the_o first_o particular_a occasion_n of_o the_o name_n protestant_n they_o be_v now_o general_o style_v so_o because_o they_o protest_v against_o the_o error_n and_o corruption_n of_o the_o roman_a church_n and_o have_v reform_v themselves_o from_o the_o same_o according_a to_o the_o primitive_a pattern_n lay_v down_o in_o holy_a scripture_n so_o that_o when_o you_o hear_v tell_v of_o the_o protestant_a religion_n or_o reform_a religion_n you_o be_v not_o to_o understand_v thereby_o any_o new_a religion_n distinct_a from_o christianity_n but_o only_o the_o old_a christian_a religion_n in_o its_o native_a simplicity_n and_o purity_n separate_v from_o all_o popish_a addition_n nor_o do_v we_o say_v as_o i_o have_v tell_v you_o that_o the_o church_n be_v lose_v and_o now_o late_o sound_v out_o but_o this_o we_o say_v that_o it_o be_v great_o corrupt_v especial_o in_o these_o western_a part_n of_o the_o world_n over_o which_o the_o bishop_n of_o rome_n have_v by_o ill_a art_n usurp_v a_o authority_n from_o which_o usurpation_n our_o ruler_n most_o just_o and_o regular_o deliver_v themselves_o and_o afterward_o with_o great_a care_n and_o consideration_n reform_v our_o church_n from_o those_o corruption_n which_o be_v chief_o introduce_v and_o support_v by_o that_o authority_n l._n but_o they_o of_o that_o church_n use_v to_o tell_v we_o and_o so_o do_v my_o author_n here_o that_o all_o who_o be_v not_o of_o their_o communion_n be_v sectary_n to_o who_o by_o no_o mean_n do_v agree_v the_o mark_n of_o the_o true_a church_n which_o yet_o they_o say_v be_v all_o of_o they_o evident_o to_o be_v find_v in_o they_o t._n nothing_o more_o common_a than_o for_o adversary_n to_o give_v one_o another_o very_a ill_a name_n and_o that_o shall_v serve_v for_o half_a a_o confutation_n among_o ignorant_a people_n but_o name_n alter_v not_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n and_o as_o zealous_o as_o they_o of_o rome_n do_v affect_v the_o name_n of_o catholic_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o upon_o search_n they_o will_v be_v find_v as_o notorious_a sectary_n as_o any_o in_o christendom_n whilst_o many_o of_o those_o who_o they_o brand_v with_o that_o infamous_a title_n will_v appear_v to_o be_v true_a catholic_n christian_n if_o there_o now_o be_v or_o ever_o be_v any_o such_o in_o the_o world_n and_o in_o order_n to_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o pray_v let_v i_o hear_v what_o be_v those_o mark_n of_o the_o true_a church_n l._n they_o be_v say_v to_o be_v chief_o four_o that_o it_o be_v one_o holy_a catholic_n and_o apostolic_a church_n and_o this_o say_v they_o can_v be_v say_v of_o any_o protestant_a church_n and_o therefore_o not_o of_o our_o church_n of_o england_n which_o be_v by_o they_o reckon_v among_o sectary_n t._n by_o these_o mark_n let_v we_o be_v try_v only_o take_v notice_n that_o no_o one_o particular_a church_n can_v be_v style_v the_o catholic_n church_n as_o if_o a_o part_n be_v the_o whole_a but_o i_o say_v the_o church_n of_o england_n which_o we_o be_v now_o chief_o concern_v to_o vindicate_v be_v a_o true_a and_o sound_a part_n of_o this_o one_o holy_a catholic_n and_o apostolic_a church_n and_o all_o the_o mark_n of_o a_o true_a church_n do_v much_o more_o clear_o and_o full_o agree_v to_o it_o than_o to_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n but_o let_v i_o hear_v what_o they_o object_n to_o the_o contrary_n l._n first_o they_o say_v it_o be_v not_o one_o that_o be_v it_o be_v not_o unite_v because_o there_o be_v so_o many_o division_n in_o it_o some_o will_v be_v protestant_n some_o presbyterian_o other_o independent_o anabaptist_n quaker_n etc._n etc._n nor_o can_v they_o be_v one_o whilst_o they_o acknowledge_v not_o one_o head_n to_o determine_v controversy_n whilst_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o papist_n pretend_v that_o they_o have_v this_o one_o head_n one_o faith_n the_o same_o sacrament_n and_o so_o be_v all_o of_o one_o religion_n and_o therefore_o have_v so_o much_o unity_n be_v to_o be_v own_a by_o this_o mark_n for_o the_o true_a church_n etc._n etc._n t._n in_o answer_n to_o this_o consider_v 1_o that_o it_o can_v with_o any_o pretence_n of_o reason_n or_o scripture_n be_v make_v the_o mark_n of_o a_o true_a church_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o division_n in_o it_o for_o be_v there_o not_o some_o to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o best_a and_o pure_a church_n immediate_o plant_v by_o the_o apostle_n themselves_o as_o particular_o in_o the_o church_n of_o corinth_n for_o which_o they_o be_v severe_o reprove_v 1_o cor._n 1._o 10_o 11_o etc._n etc._n 2_o much_o less_o do_v it_o become_v those_o of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o accuse_v other_o of_o division_n who_o have_v more_o and_o great_a among_o themselves_o than_o can_v be_v find_v i_o believe_v in_o any_o other_o church_n in_o christendom_n they_o talk_v of_o one_o head_n but_o sometime_o they_o have_v have_v two_o or_o three_o pope_n at_o once_o and_o that_o for_o several_a year_n together_o they_o be_v divide_v in_o point_n fundamental_a to_o their_o own_o church_n as_o whether_o the_o pope_n be_v above_o a_o general_n council_n or_o the_o council_n above_o the_o pope_n nor_o be_v they_o any_o more_o agree_v where_o the_o infallibility_n of_o which_o they_o boast_v so_o much_o be_v seat_v than_o about_o the_o supremacy_n whether_o it_o be_v in_o the_o pope_n or_o in_o a_o general_n council_n or_o in_o both_o together_o yea_o some_o say_v it_o be_v neither_o in_o one_o or_o the_o other_o nor_o in_o both_o unite_a as_o consider_v apart_o from_o the_o rest_n but_o in_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o faithful_a as_o by_o they_o religion_n be_v convey_v from_o one_o generation_n to_o another_o and_o be_v they_o not_o much_o better_a for_o a_o infallible_a judge_n of_o controversy_n whilst_o they_o be_v not_o yet_o agree_v who_o he_o be_v and_o where_o this_o infallibility_n be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o a_o multitude_n of_o other_o point_n be_v they_o divide_v as_o learned_a writer_n of_o our_o church_n have_v show_v at_o large_a and_o with_o great_a probability_n have_v some_o assert_v that_o they_o hardly_o agree_v universal_o among_o themselves_o in_o any_o doctrine_n but_o those_o wherein_o they_o agree_v with_o we_o 3_o but_o again_o be_v they_o never_o so_o well_o unite_v among_o themselves_o yet_o be_v this_o but_o the_o agreement_n of_o a_o sect_n with_o itself_o and_o be_v far_o from_o prove_v they_o to_o be_v therefore_o the_o catholic_n church_n or_o any_o sound_a part_n of_o it_o as_o if_o suppose_v all_o the_o quaker_n be_v perfect_o agree_v together_o in_o all_o opinion_n and_o imagine_v their_o number_n be_v as_o great_a as_o the_o papist_n be_v they_o therefore_o to_o be_v reckon_v the_o catholic_n church_n because_o forsooth_o they_o be_v one_o among_o themselves_o sure_o no_o since_o by_o their_o error_n and_o their_o schism_n they_o divide_v themselves_o from_o all_o other_o christian_n thus_o whilst_o papist_n be_v unite_v in_o own_v the_o pope_n to_o be_v christ_n vicar_n on_o earth_n and_o the_o supreme_a visible_a head_n over_o the_o whole_a christian_a church_n they_o do_v hereby_o only_o make_v a_o sect_n or_o faction_n let_v their_o number_n be_v never_o so_o great_a and_o by_o this_o mean_n as_o well_o as_o many_o other_o ill_a opinion_n and_o practice_n which_o be_v impose_v on_o the_o
press_v all_o man_n to_o endeavour_v after_o perfection_n in_o every_o grace_n and_o virtue_n and_o especial_o to_o be_v much_o in_o work_n of_o mercy_n and_o charity_n but_o yet_o she_o do_v not_o fright_v people_n with_o story_n of_o purgatory_n to_o bring_v in_o their_o wealth_n to_o the_o church_n nor_o teach_v they_o that_o there_o be_v any_o great_a perfection_n in_o leave_v their_o honest_a calling_n to_o run_v into_o a_o monastery_n bring_v their_o riches_n along_o with_o they_o thither_o she_o require_v constant_a temperance_n and_o sobriety_n and_o sometime_o impose_v fast_v and_o abstinence_n but_o then_o whether_o man_n eat_v a_o little_a flesh_n or_o fish_n oil_n or_o butter_n she_o think_v it_o not_o a_o matter_n of_o the_o least_o moment_n but_o leave_v all_o man_n to_o their_o own_o choice_n and_o prudence_n in_o a_o word_n she_o do_v not_o with_o the_o pharisee_fw-mi teach_v for_o doctrine_n the_o command_n of_o man_n but_o diligent_o inculcate_n the_o express_a commandment_n of_o almighty_a god_n deliver_v to_o we_o in_o his_o holy_a word_n and_o though_o she_o will_v not_o have_v we_o so_o foolish_a and_o proud_a as_o to_o think_v of_o merit_a heaven_n by_o our_o own_o good_a work_n yet_o she_o teach_v that_o upon_o our_o patient_a continuance_n in_o well_o do_v we_o shall_v through_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n certain_o obtain_v eternal_a life_n but_o upon_o no_o other_o term_n do_v she_o encourage_v any_o man_n to_o hope_v for_o it_o and_o thus_o you_o see_v how_o our_o church_n teach_v we_o to_o take_v that_o same_o safe_a and_o narrow_a but_o sweet_a and_o pleasant_a way_n to_o salvation_n which_o be_v propose_v to_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n l._n i_o be_o full_o persuade_v she_o do_v so_o god_n grant_v i_o grace_v ever_o to_o walk_v in_o this_o holy_a way_n and_o then_o i_o shall_v not_o doubt_v of_o a_o happy_a end_n pray_v proceed_v to_o his_o last_o argument_n t._n i_o shall_v so_o and_o this_o it_o be_v that_o church_n be_v not_o to_o be_v hear_v which_o have_v no_o solid_a reason_n for_o she_o keep_v the_o sabbath-day_n on_o the_o day_n she_o do_v keep_v it_o but_o no_o church_n or_o congregation_n of_o sectary_n have_v this_o and_o therefore_o none_o of_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v hear_v what_o say_v you_o to_o this_o l._n i_o say_v that_o we_o of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n who_o he_o unjust_o call_v sectary_n have_v good_a reason_n for_o our_o keep_v the_o sabbath_n on_o that_o day_n we_o do_v keep_v it_o even_o as_o good_a reason_n as_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n itself_o have_v t._n he_o go_v on_o to_o prove_v the_o contrary_a thus_o no_o church_n of_o sectary_n have_v scripture_n for_o keep_v the_o sabbath-day_n on_o sunday_n and_o no_o long_o on_o saturday_n as_o god_n command_v it_o and_o yet_o they_o reject_v tradition_n upon_o which_o ground_n the_o roman_a church_n keep_v the_o sunday_n in_o lieu_n of_o saturday_n and_o therefore_o they_o have_v no_o solid_a reason_n for_o what_o they_o do_v etc._n etc._n l._n i_o answer_v we_o have_v scripture_n for_o keep_v one_o day_n in_o seven_o viz._n the_o four_o commandment_n and_o we_o read_v that_o after_o our_o saviour_n resurrection_n the_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n common_o assemble_v together_o on_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n which_o be_v call_v the_o lordsday_n revel_v 1._o 10._o and_o then_o we_o have_v tradition_n to_o assure_v we_o that_o this_o day_n be_v observe_v by_o the_o christian_a church_n ever_o since_o which_o tradition_n we_o may_v plead_v for_o our_o practice_n i_o trow_v as_o well_o as_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n t._n yes_o certain_o we_o may_v for_o though_o we_o reject_v a_o great_a many_o ill_a thing_n which_o they_o will_v thrust_v upon_o we_o for_o old_a tradition_n many_o of_o they_o be_v mere_a novelty_n of_o their_o own_o devise_v yet_o we_o do_v by_o no_o mean_n reject_v such_o tradition_n as_o have_v sufficient_a evidence_n of_o their_o have_v be_v general_o receive_v by_o all_o christian_a church_n from_o the_o very_a time_n of_o the_o apostle_n down_o to_o our_o day_n and_o of_o this_o nature_n do_v learned_a man_n general_o affirm_v the_o observation_n of_o the_o lordsday_n to_o be_v and_o what_o you_o allege_v from_o scripture_n may_v very_o well_o serve_v to_o recommend_v to_o we_o so_o ancient_a and_o general_a a_o practice_n to_o all_o this_o beside_o the_o great_a equity_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o the_o thing_n in_o itself_o you_o may_v add_v the_o authority_n of_o those_o who_o god_n have_v set_v over_o we_o in_o church_n and_o state_n all_o which_o be_v put_v together_o leave_v the_o nice_a dispute_n that_o have_v be_v about_o this_o matter_n be_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n for_o our_o observation_n of_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n as_o a_o christian_a sabbath_n a_o day_n of_o rest_n from_o our_o common_a employment_n devote_v to_o the_o more_o solemn_a worship_n and_o service_n of_o god_n both_o in_o public_a and_o private_a as_o solid_a reason_n therefore_o do_v we_o give_v for_o our_o practice_n herein_o as_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n itself_o can_v do_v or_o any_o other_o church_n in_o the_o world_n and_o thus_o we_o have_v do_v with_o his_o five_o mighty_a argument_n in_o which_o upon_o a_o little_a examination_n there_o appear_v nothing_o of_o strength_n or_o solidity_n he_o next_o muster_v up_o some_o weighty_a objection_n as_o he_o reckon_v they_o against_o those_o who_o he_o call_v sectary_n which_o he_o say_v aught_o to_o make_v they_o very_o much_o doubt_v whether_o they_o be_v secure_a in_o the_o way_n they_o be_v in_o and_o here_o according_a to_o his_o usual_a vain_a way_n of_o brag_a he_o make_v this_o large_a offer_n which_o yet_o he_o will_v never_o make_v good_a that_o all_o priest_n jesuit_n and_o catholic_n over_o all_o the_o world_n will_v turn_v to_o their_o way_n if_o they_o can_v but_o get_v from_o their_o minister_n a_o clear_a and_o satisfactory_a resolution_n of_o the_o follow_a doubt_n l._n it_o be_v cunning_o do_v of_o he_o to_o call_v for_o a_o satisfactory_a resolution_n since_o though_o it_o be_v as_o clear_a as_o the_o light_n at_o noonday_n yet_o they_o may_v still_o pretend_v that_o it_o be_v not_o satisfactory_a t._n they_o may_v so_o though_o i_o question_v not_o but_o it_o will_v appear_v such_o to_o all_o that_o be_v impartial_a and_o judicious_a these_o doubt_n i_o shall_v propose_v to_o you_o in_o order_n and_o hear_v what_o you_o yourself_o can_v say_v for_o the_o resolve_v of_o they_o l._n i_o shall_v give_v in_o the_o best_a answer_n i_o be_o able_a and_o where_o i_o be_o at_o a_o loss_n shall_v still_o desire_v your_o help_n chap._n ii_o a_o resolution_n of_o some_o doubt_n and_o question_n propose_v to_o protestant_n t._n first_o he_o demand_v whether_o it_o can_v be_v clear_o show_v that_o our_o minister_n be_v send_v by_o almighty_a god_n to_o preach_v and_o to_o reform_v the_o roman_n catholic_n church_n or_o whether_o they_o be_v not_o some_o of_o the_o false_a prophet_n who_o say_v the_o lord_n say_v when_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o send_v they_o ezek._n 13._o 6._o l._n there_o seem_v no_o great_a difficulty_n in_o resolve_v this_o doubt_n since_o our_o minister_n have_v lawful_a ordination_n and_o thereby_o have_v authority_n to_o preach_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o by_o the_o light_n of_o this_o word_n they_o discover_v many_o error_n and_o abuse_n in_o the_o roman_a church_n wherewith_o we_o be_v foul_o pollute_v and_o by_o god_n blessing_n and_o the_o assistance_n of_o lawful_a authority_n they_o be_v very_o instrumental_a in_o reform_v we_o from_o the_o same_o now_o whilst_o they_o prove_v their_o doctrine_n by_o this_o word_n of_o god_n they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v compare_v to_o those_o false_a prophet_n who_o teach_v the_o people_n lie_v and_o vanity_n as_o we_o have_v it_o ezek._n 13._o 7_o 8._o t._n your_o answer_n be_v sufficient_a and_o very_a clear_a for_o since_o our_o first_o reformer_n do_v not_o publish_v a_o new_a religion_n but_o rather_o restore_v the_o old_a by_o remove_v those_o corrupt_a addition_n that_o have_v be_v make_v to_o it_o they_o do_v not_o need_v any_o extraordinary_a commission_n from_o heaven_n such_o as_o moses_n have_v from_o god_n when_o he_o deliver_v the_o law_n and_o as_o the_o apostle_n have_v from_o jesus_n christ_n when_o they_o be_v first_o send_v to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n but_o it_o be_v sufficient_a that_o they_o be_v due_o qualify_v by_o god_n spirit_n for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n and_o be_v lawful_o call_v to_o it_o by_o those_o who_o have_v authority_n in_o the_o church_n to_o ordain_v they_o to_o that_o office_n such_o as_o these_o be_v true_o say_v to_o be_v send_v of_o god_n and_o be_v therefore_o
therefore_o whilst_o the_o people_n take_v the_o flesh_n under_o the_o species_n of_o bread_n this_o may_v very_o well_o serve_v without_o take_v the_o wine_n too_o but_o if_o this_o be_v a_o good_a reason_n why_o then_o need_v the_o consecrate_v priest_n take_v the_o wine_n or_o why_o need_v our_o saviour_n have_v appoint_v both_o bread_n and_o wine_n to_o be_v make_v use_n of_o in_o this_o his_o holy_a supper_n here_o than_o you_o have_v a_o plain_a instance_n of_o their_o practise_v contrary_a to_o the_o scripture_n in_o so_o weighty_a a_o matter_n as_o the_o administer_a the_o holy_a
